My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs

by Robert L. Daniels

And she [Julie Andrews] contributed to the evening's most magical moment,

at the finale.  After Michael Crawford performed a persuasive rendition of "I've
Grown Accustomed to Her Face", Andrews sidled up to him to utter "the rain
in Spain stays mainly on the plain!"  She then sang the vocal reply-"On the plain!
On the plain!"  By george she's got it!  Andrews will sing again!  A mere half
dozen notes brought a capacity audience cheering to its feet, celebrating a
comeback for that singing voice since botched throat surgery robbed the public
of her glorious tones.
That moment might have been the evening's sentimental highlight, but there

were more than a few treasures to savor....
.....Broadway's original Phantom, Michael Crawford, still invests "Music of the

Night" with dark dignity.
