Scene 5

A GRAVEYARD IN PERROS

_______________________________________

([WIDESHOT] An open topped carriage races down the snow-covered streets. It is cold and foggy. The horse's hooves beat on the cobblestones. The DRIVER swathed in black drives them on. [CUT to: CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE] CHRISTINE sits in the back, the wind presses her veil to her face like a mask.)

CHRISTINE

In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came . . .

that voice which calls to me and speaks my name . . .

(We once again see a flashback of YOUNG CHRISTINE and her father as he plays the violin to her, tinted a gloomy violet-blue. END OF FLASHBACK with CHRISTINE at the gates of the cemetery and her back to the camera, then CUT to the front of CHRISTINE seen from shoulders up.)

Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing . . . Her Father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music . . .

Her father promised her . . . Her father promised her . . .

(CHRISTINE opens the gates of the cemetery. [CUT to WIDESHOT of cemetery as CHRISTINE enters cemetery].  The great cemetery overlooks the whole of Paris.)

(Close on a bell tolling. [CUT to CHRISTINE]

We WIDEN to find CHRISTINE, bearing a bouquet of red roses, gliding past towering MAUSOLEUMS and CROSSES. Great GARGOYLES and ANGELS stare down at her.) [During this song, CUT between CLOSE-UPS, left, front, back, side, right views, WIDESHOTS of CHRISTINE at above and ground-level angles]

CHRISTINE

You were once my one companion . . . you were all that mattered . . .

You were once a friend and father - then my world was shattered . . .

Wishing you were somehow here again . . . wishing you were somehow near . . .

Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed, somehow you would be here . . .

Wishing I could hear your voice again . . . knowing that I never would . . .

Dreaming of you won't help me to do all that you dreamed I could . . .

Passing bells and sculpted angels, cold and monumental,

Seem for you the wrong companions- you were warm and gentle. . .

(CHRISTINE is arriving at the foot of the mausoleum steps.  Turn 90 degrees slowly from side view of CHRISTINE to her back with the mausoleum in front of her. [CUT to: CHRISTINE seen from above] )

Too many years fighting back tears . . . Why can't the past just die . . .?

(CUT to: side view of her at CLOSE-UP)

Wishing you were somehow here again . . . knowing we must say goodbye . . .

Try to forgive . . . teach me to live . . . give me the strength to try . . .

(CUT to: front of CHRISTINE)

No more memories, no more silent tears . . .  No more gazing across the wasted years . . .

Help me say goodbye. Help me say goodbye!

(Pull back when CHRISTINE hits the high note then CUT to front of CHRISTINE at ground-level.)

(She kneels down and lays the red roses on the snow-covered steps. High above her, the gates at the top of the steps begin go open. [CUT to: back of CHRISTINE at WIDESHOT.] Night has fallen as we hear the PHANTOM's VOICE.)

PHANTOM’s VOICE (very soft and enticing)

Wandering child . . . so lost . . . so helpless . . . yearning for my guidance . . .

( [CUT to: CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE still seen from above front] Bewildered, CHRISTINE looks up. She sees that the mausoleum's inner gates are open, a strange light emanates from the interior. She murmurs breathlessly:)

CHRISTINE

Angel . . . or father . . . friend . . . or Phantom . . . ?

Who is it there, staring . . . ?

(CUT to: interior seen at front, WIDESHOT)

PHANTOM’s VOICE (more and more hypnotic.)

Have you forgotten your Angel . . .?

(CUT to: CHRISTINE seen from side view, her face almost close to profile.)

CHRISTINE

Angel . . . oh, speak . . . What endless longings echo in this whisper . . .!

(CUT to: RAOUL’S POV of CHRISTINE at mausoleum.  RAOUL has followed CHRISTINE to the graveyard and now watches from atop a white charger from the closed gates.)

PHANTOM (now drawing CHRISTINE towards him)

Too long you've wandered in winter . . .

(CHRISTINE is slowly ascending the steps towards the inner doors and the light.)

RAOUL (to himself a murmur.)

Once again she is his . . .

PHANTOM

Far from my far-reaching gaze . . .

(CUT to: RAOUL at CLOSE-UP)

RAOUL

Once again she returns . . .

(CUT to: CHRISTINE from RAOUL’S POV)

CHRISTINE (increasingly mesmerized.)

Wildly my mind beats against you . . .

PHANTOM

You resist . . .

PHANTOM/CHRISTINE

Yet your/the soul obeys . . .

(CUT to: RAOUL at CLOSE-UP)

RAOUL

. . . to the arms of her angel . . .

(We cut to Christine at side view. During this, we CUT between the PHANTOM, CHRISTINE and RAOUL individually, and blended in overlapping form.)

RAOUL

angel or demon . . . still he calls her . . . luring her back, from the grave . . . angel or dark seducer . . .?

Who are you, strange angel . . .?

PHANTOM

Angel of Music! You denied me, turning from true beauty . . .

Angel of Music! Do not shun me . . . Come to your strange Angel . . .

CHRISTINE

Angel of Music! I denied you, turning from true beauty . . .

Angel of Music! My protector . . . Come to me, strange Angel . . .

(CUT to: interior, have camera slowly closing in.) (We have begun to discern a dark form within the light of the mausoleum.)

PHANTOM (beckoning her)

I am your Angel of Music . . .

(CUT to: CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE approaching inside.)

Come to me: Angel of Music . . .

(But, just as CHRISTINE reaches the last few steps, [CUT to: RAOUL at a distance, coming close to the camera, then CLOSE-UP of RAOUL] RAOUL, on the magnificent white charger, charges through the gates of the cemetery with a great cry:)

RAOUL

Angel of darkness! Cease this torment!

[CUT to: PHANTOM and CHRISTINE]

(Inexorably the PHANTOM continues to beckon CHRISTINE.)

PHANTOM

I am your Angel of Music . . . Come to me: Angel of Music . . .

(CHRISTINE is now at the entrance to the mausoleum. RAOUL meanwhile is galloping and jumping through the crosses and over the monuments. Snow and dirt fly.)

(CUT to: RAOUL)

RAOUL (in desperation)

Christine! Christine listen to me! Whatever you may believe, this man . . . this thing . . . is not your father!

(To the PHANTOM)

Let her go! For God's sake, let her go! Christine!

( [CUT to: NEAR CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE with the mausoleum blurred in the background] Coming out of her trance CHRISTINE turns and mouths the words:)

CHRISTINE

Raoul . . .

( [CUT to: RAOUL] And sees RAOUL arriving on the white charger. [CUT to: the PHANTOM seen at the top from below] At last, the PHANTOM appears up on the top of the mausoleum behind the huge stone cross.)

PHANTOM

Bravo, Monsieur! Such spirited words!

(He shoots a flame from his skull staff at [CUT to: RAOUL, seen from the PHANTOM’S POV] RAOUL [the staff is obviously an early blow-torch], but RAOUL dodges it. [During the fight, cut between RAOUL seen from the PHANTOM’S POV and the PHANTOM seen from RAOUL’S POV] This happens several times, the two moving throughout the cemetery. The following dialogue is exchanged throughout the scene:)

RAOUL

More tricks Monsieur?

PHANTOM

Let’s see, Monsieur, how far you dare go!

RAOUL

More deception?  More violence?

PHANTOM

That’s right, that’s right, Monsieur . . . keep fighting!   You know you can’t win!

RAOUL

You can’t win her love by making her your prisoner!

PHANTOM

I’m here . . . I’m here, Monsieur, the Angel of Death!

Come on, come on, Monsieur.  Don’t stop, don’t stop!

CHRISTINE

Raoul!

[CUT to: RAOUL heading to CHRISTINE and picking her up.]

PHANTOM

Don’t go!

(Then CUT to WIDESHOT of RAOUL and CHRISTINE riding away into the distance, then pull back to see the back of the PHANTOM seen from shoulder’s up] RAOUL finally succeeds in grabbing CHRISTINE onto the back of his horse. The PHANTOM would not dare fire in the direction of CHRISTINE. The two ride off as the PHANTOM watches in despair. He cries out to them:) (CUT to: CLOSE-UP of the PHANTOM)

PHANTOM

So be it! Now let it be war upon you both!

(CUT to RAOUL and CHRISTINE on HORSE)

RAOUL (Riding with Christine out of the cemetery)

But this time the disaster Will be yours!

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of one rose, which has been clinging to CHRISTINE’s cloak, flying off and landing in the snow at the PHANTOM’s feet. We CLOSE into the rose’s red petals slowly, gently, then quickly zoom into the petals. We zoom out to reveal the red curtains of the stage of the Opera House before the performance of “Don Juan Triumphant”.)
