Scene 5

THE LABYRINTH UNDERGROUND

_______________________________________

(We suddenly CUT to darkness. We move up, revealing endless iron bridges, connected with staircases. Along the rails of these bridges and stairs are iron sculptures of almost demon-like creatures. They hold torches which flicker with flame. There is an eerie blue-green mist. We move up to see CHRISTINE and the PHANTOM at the end of one of these bridges. We then CUT to a close up of CHRISTINE.)

CHRISTINE

In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came . . .

that voice which calls to me and speaks my name . . .

(We see her move. We CUT to a wide shot of the PHANTOM placing CHRISTINE onto a white horse, CESAR from the book, which has mysteriously appeared.)

And do I dream again? For now I find,

the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside my mind . . .

(They start down a set of never-ending staircases, with the PHANTOM leading CESAR as CHRISTINE rides.)

(CUT to: PHANTOM)

PHANTOM

Sing once again with me our strange duet . . .

My power over you grows stronger yet . . .

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE looking behind her while on the horse.)

And though you turn from me, to glance behind,

the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside your mind . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT.  CHRISTINE and the PHANTOM have reached an underground lake. There is a gondola there.)

CHRISTINE

Those who have seen your face draw back in fear . . .

(The PHANTOM waves his hand and suddenly the lake is lit up with dozens of candles on candelabras, which are on both sides and tower over the lake. He does this several times revealing even more.)

I am the mask you wear . . .

(CUT to closer WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM gently leading CHRISTINE into the boat.)

PHANTOM

It's me they hear . . .

(CUT to PHANTOM pushing the boat off with his row.)

BOTH

Your/my spirit and your/my voice, in one combined:

the Phantom of the Opera is there: inside your/my mind . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT, side view of the boat, silhouetted in the mist. The lantern on the front looks extremely eerie.)

OFFSTAGE VOICES

He's there, the Phantom of the Opera . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT from above, looking down on the boat.)

Beware the Phantom of the Opera . . .

(CUT to CLOSE-UP front shot of the boat’s reflection in the water. We then move up from the reflection in the water to our two passengers.)

PHANTOM

In all your fantasies, you always knew, that man and mystery . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the boat entering the harbor.)

CHRISTINE

were both in you . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM hovering over CHRISTINE)

BOTH

And in this labyrinth, where night is blind,

the Phantom of the Opera is there/here: inside your/my mind . . .

Scene 6

BEYOND THE LAKE

___________________________________________

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the boat, which has reached the dock of the harbor. The PHANTOM helps CHRISTINE out of the boat and then commands her:)

PHANTOM

Sing for me. Sing my angel of music.

(We circle CHRISTINE and the PHANTOM’s lair is revealed to us for the first time. It is dark, yet elegant, with candelabras everywhere.)

CHRISTINE

He’s there: the Phantom of the Opera...

Ah- Ah- Ah- Ah-

(CUT to WIDESHOT. CHRISTINE sings higher, then CUT to WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM to the right side of the screen with CHRISTINE in the background.)

(During this, the PHANTOM removes his hat and tosses it aside. Then he unties his cape and lets it drop. He runs his hands through his hair and down his body.)

Ah- Ah- Ah-

(We see the PHANTOM position himself at a tremendous pipe organ and he commands powerfully as he bangs a note on it:)

Sing my angel of music!  Sing for me!

(CUT to CLOSEUP of Christine’s face, zooming out as her scream resonates throughout the underground.)

CHRISTINE

Ah!

(CUT to WIDESHOT of PHANTOM, at organ, pounding on it as he sings:)

PHANTOM

I have brought you to the seat of sweet music’s throne.

To this kingdom where all must pay homage to music ... music...

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE, eyes wide and frightened.)   (CUT to CLOSE-UP of PHANTOM.  Realizing how frightened he has made CHRISTINE, he softens his tone, telling her:)

You have come here for one purpose and one alone. Since the moment I first heard you sing,

I have needed you with me, to serve me, to sing for my music ... my music...

(The PHANTOM, still sitting at his organ, attempts to comfort and relax CHRISTINE by singing:)

Night-time sharpens, heightens each sensation . . .

Darkness stirs and wakes imagination . . .

Silently the senses abandon their defenses . . .

(The PHANTOM stands up from his organ and walks to CHRISTINE very cat-like.)

Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendour . . .

Grasp it, sense it - tremulous and tender . . .

(He has approached her.  [CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE and the PHANTOM’S hand.]  He gently pushes her face away from him and then leads it back forward.)

Turn your face away from the garish light of day,

turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light -

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of the PHANTOM leaning over CHRISTINE’s shoulder, his face almost touching hers.)

and listen to the music of the night . . .

(FADE to WIDESHOT.  The PHANTOM backs away, returning to his organ.)

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams!

Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before!

Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar!

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of the PHANTOM’s fingers hitting keys on the organ.)

And you'll live as you've never lived before . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT: The PHANTOM once again approaches CHRISTINE )

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you . . .

Feel it, hear it, secretly possess you. . .

Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind,

in this darkness which you know you cannot fight -

the darkness of the music of the night . . .

(CHRISTINE slowly backs away from the PHANTOM, and he begins to just as slowly pursue her. At this point, the portcullis slowly drops down and as it drops down, the PHANTOM drapes himself onto the portcullis while CHRISTINE looks on. He then lets go of the portcullis when CHRISTINE walks away and looks up.  She has been seduced by his voice.)

Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world!

Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before!

(CUT to wide shot from above. CHRISTINE turns around and then stops.)

Let your soul take you where you long to be!

(As we reach the word “be” cut to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE. She convulses at the note. [CUT to: WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM and CHRISTINE]

She then relaxes and the Phantom [who outstretches his arms in the air when he finishes the high note on “be”] comes into the shot.  He slowly walks towards her, almost cat-like.)

Only then can you belong to me . . .

(The PHANTOM conditions CHRISTINE to his touch and she caresses his mask.)

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication!

Touch me, trust me savour each sensation!

Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in

to the power of the music that I write -

the power of the music of the night . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT, following CHRISTINE and the PHANTOM.)

(He leads her to a room. It is dominated by a huge bed in the shape of a black swan. CHRISTINE walks through. The PHANTOM pulls off a dust cover and as she turns, she is confronted by an AUTOMAT.

[CUT to AUTOMAT]

This one is a life-size duplicate of herself in a wedding gown, surrounded by a mirror. The dummy falls forward. It's too grotesque and bizarre.

[CUT to AUTOMAT’s POV.]

CHRISTINE faints and falls back into the PHANTOM's arms.

[CUT to WIDESHOT from above, as we see the PHANTOM carry CHRISTINE to the bed where he lays her down, then CUT to WIDESHOT from CHRISTINE’s position on the bed, looking up at the PHANTOM.)

PHANTOM

You alone can make my song take flight!

(CUT to WIDESHOT from CHRISTINE’s position on the bed, looking up at the PHANTOM.)

help me make the music of the ...

(FADE to a CLOSE-UP of the PHANTOM outstretching his left hand in the air and pull back from below to above when his voice soars on “night”.   Then FADE TO BLACK)

night....

Scene 7

THE NEXT MORNING

_______________________________________

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM seated at the organ playing with furious concentration. He breaks off occasionally to write the music down. CUT to close up of CHRISTINE in her bed.  We move down beside her.  There is a musical box in the shape of a barrel organ beside the bed. Mysteriously, it plays as we pan back up to find CHRISTINE waking up. The music keeps her in a half-trance.)

CHRISTINE

I remember there was mist . . . swirling mist upon a vast, glassy lake . . .

There were candles all around and on the lake there was a boat,

and in the boat there was a man . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM at his organ and the door to CHRISTINE’s bedroom, behind. She enters and approaches the PHANTOM who does not see her. As she reaches for his mask, he turns, almost catching her. This happens several times.)

Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is the face in the mask?

(She finally succeeds in tearing the mask from his face. The PHANTOM springs up and rounds on her furiously. She falls backwards on the floor.  As all of this happens, we cut to the BACK VIEW of the PHANTOM, never seeing his face. We see the horror on CHRISTINE’s face.)

PHANTOM

Damn you! You little prying Pandora! You little demon - is this what you wanted to see?

Curse you! You little lying Delilah! You little vixen! Now you cannot ever be free!

Damn you . . . Curse you . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT of the PHANTOM in profile [hideous side hidden] falling on the floor at CHRISTINE’s feet.)

(a pause)

Stranger than you dreamt it - can you even dare to look or bear to think of me:

this loathsome gargoyle, who burns in hell, but secretly yearns for heaven,

secretly . . . secretly . . .

(She slides away.  He moves towards her.)

But, Christine . . .

Fear can

Turn to love - you'll learn to see, to find the man behind the monster: this . . .

repulsive carcass, who seems a beast, but secretly dreams of beauty,

secretly . . . secretly . . . Oh, Christine . . .

(He holds out his hand for the mask, which she gives to him. CHRISTINE is near tears. Her heart is moved by this poor man.

We move up with him as he puts the mask on, along with his hat and cloak and sings:)

Come we must return - those two fools who run my theatre will be missing you.

(As the PHANTOM and CHRISTINE move to the left of the screen into the darkness, move camera to the left. We still move left into the darkness of the corridors of the Paris Opera House where we see a WIDESHOT of MEG in Scene 7-CHRISTINE’S DRESSING ROOM.)
