Scene 2

THE GALA

_______________________________________

(Transformation to the Gala. CHRISTINE is revealed in full costume. During this, we cut between CLOSE-UPS of CHRISTINE, the AUDIENCE’S POV, CHRISTINE’S POV, left and right views of CHRISTINE.)

And though its clear, though it was always clear, that this was never meant to be,

if you happen to remember, stop and think of me.

Think of August when the trees were green-

don't think about the way things might have been . . .

Think of me, think of me waking, silent and resigned.

Imagine me, trying too hard to put you from my mind.

Think of me. Please, say you’ll think of me, Whatever else you choose to do.

There will never be a day, when I won't think of you . .

(End with WIDESHOT of AUDIENCE applauding in front of CHRISTINE.)

(Applause, bravos. (CUT to CHRISTINE seen from STAGE LEFT above where the back of RAOUL’S head is seen. Prominent among the bravos, those of the young RAOUL in the MANAGERS' box.)

(CUT to front of RAOUL)

RAOUL

Can it be? Can it be Christine? Bravo!

(He raises his opera-glasses.)

Long ago, It seems so long ago, How young and innocent we were!

(Lowering his opera-glasses.)

She may not remember me.

(CUT to back of RAOUL’S head where CHRISTINE is seen at the left bottom of the screen.)

but I remember her...

CHRISTINE

Flowers fade. The fruits of summer fade... they have their seasons so do we..

But please promise me that sometimes, you will think ah- of me.

(After the curtain closes, the AUDIENCE is seen from the back of the theatre applauding.)

Scene 3

AFTER THE GALA

_______________________________________

(The curtain closes upstage. CUT to backstage where BALLET GIRLS, from the wings gush around CHRISTINE who hands each a flower from her bouquet. REYER stiffly gives his approval.)

GIRY (to CHRISTINE)

Yes, you did well. He will be pleased.

(To the DANCERS)

And you! You were a disgrace! Such ronds de jambe! Such temps de cuisse! Come, we rehearse. Now!

(She emphasizes this with her cane.)

(The BALLET GIRLS settle into rehearsal, GlRY keeping time with her stick. CHRISTINE moves slowly away from the DANCERS and through several corridors into the chapel. [CUT to: corridors and move into the chapel.]

Unseen by her, MEG also moves away and follows her. She is lights a candle which she places in front of a plaque. [CUT to: plaque and have all the other plaques in the chapel seen on-screen in the same frame.]

Fixed to the plaque is a daguerreotype of her father. There is a sculpted violin in front. Her father should resemble the PHANTOM when disguised. We notice that there are plaques all along the wall, each with a little sculpture describing the profession of the deceased member of the Opera Populaire; ballet shoes, instruments etc. CHRISTINE kneels to pray. She hears: )

PHANTOM'S VOICE

Brava, brava, bravissima. . .

(It is followed by a phrase on the violin [a violin version of “ANGEL OF MUSIC”]. CHRISTINE is bewildered by the sound and looks up, drawn to it. MEG, entering the chapel as it ends, has not heard it. CHRISTINE turns in surprise, and is relieved to see her.)

MEG

Christine ... Christine ...

PHANTOM'S VOICE (a whisper)

Christine……..

MEG (Enthusiastic)

Where in the world have you been hiding? Really you were perfect!

I only wish I knew your secret. Who is this new tutor?

(CUT to CHRSTINE with MEG’S back to the camera at left.)

CHRISTINE (Distracted)

Father once spoke of an angel. I used to dream he’d appear.

Now as I sing I can sense him, and I know he’s here.

Here in these rooms he calls me softly somewhere inside hiding.

Somehow I know he’s always with me. Heed the unseen genious.

(CUT to: MEG.  MEG moves towards CHRISTINE and begins to lead her out of the chapel.)

MEG

I watched your face from the shadows, distant through all the applause.

I hear your voice in the darkness, yet the words aren’t yours.

(MEG is leading CHRISTINE down the corridor.)

CHRISTINE (not hearing her, ecstatic.)

Angel of Music, Guide and guardian, Grant to me your glory!

(We see a shadow move in the rafters above them. The shadow hovers over CHRISTINE.)

MEG (To herself)

Who is this angel? This...

(CUT to: Flats raise and lower as BUQUET [seen from his POV], busy securing ropes, watches them, lecherously. They are unaware of his presence.)

BOTH

Angel of Music, hide no longer. Secret and strange angel!

(CUT to MEG and CHRISTINE, who is looking up.)

CHRISTINE (Darkly)

He’s with me even now...

MEG (Bewildered) (holding CHRISTINE’S hands.)

Your hands are cold...

CHRISTINE

All around me...

MEG

Your face, Christine. It’s white!

CHRISTINE

It frightens me...

MEG

Don’t be frightened.

(They arrive in the corridor and find an adoring crowd of fans. They move through the crowds towards CHRISTINE's dressing room amid bravos and flowers.

[CUT to RAOUL who is way in back of the crowd] RAOUL sees them but cannot reach them.

[CUT to: FIRMIN, ANDRE, and MME. FIRMIN] Meanwhile, FIRMIN and ANDRE [at upper right of screen] are making their way towards CHRISTINE, in high spirits, bearing champagne. FIRMIN grabs the bottle from ANDRE and swigs from it.

[CUT TO CHRISTINE and MEG looking at one another.]

MEG [at right of screen] looks at MME. GIRY [OFF-SCREEN]. [MOVE CAMERA to MME. GIRY] The moment is broken by the arrival of MME. GIRY.)

GIRY

Meg Giry. Are you a dancer? Then come and practice.

(MEG leaves at the left of the screen as the camera moves left and we see MEG join the DANCERS CUT to: MME. GIRY and CHRISTINE.)

My dear, I was asked to give you this.

(She hands CHRlSTlNE a note, and exits. CHRISTINE opens it and reads.)

CHRISTINE

A red scarf . . . the attic . . . Little Lotte . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT of RAOUL, ANDRE, FIRMIN, and MME. FIRMIN in Scene 4- Christine’s Dressing Room.)

Scene 4

CHRISTINE 'S DRESSING ROOM

_______________________________________

(Meanwhile RAOUL ANDRE, FIRMIN, and MME. FIRMIN are seen making their way towards the dressing room, the MANAGERS in high spirits, bearing champagne.)

ANDRE

A tour de force! No other way to describe it!

FIRMIN

What a relief ! Not a single refund!

MME. FIRMIN

Greedy.

ANDRE

Richard, I think we've made quite a discovery in Miss Daae!

FIRMIN (to RAOUL, indicating CHRISTINE 'S dressing room.)

Here we are, Monsieur le Vicomte.

RAOUL

Gentlemen if you wouldn't mind. This is one visit I should prefer to make unaccompanied.

(He takes the champagne from FIRMIN.)

ANDRE

As you wish, monsieur.

(They bow and ALL EXCEPT RAOUL move off.)

FIRMIN (almost OFF-SCREEN)

They appear to have met before . . .

(RAOUL knocks at the door and enters.) (CUT to inside of CHRISTINE’S dressing room.)

RAOUL

Christine Daae, where is your red scarf?

CHRISTINE

Monsieur?

RAOUL

You can't have lost it. After all the trouble I took. I was just fourteen and soaked to the skin.

CHRISTINE

Because you had run into the sea to fetch my scarf. Oh, Raoul. So it is you!

RAOUL

Christine.

(They embrace and laugh. She moves away and sits at her dressing table.)

RAOUL

"Little Lotte let her mind wander . . ."

CHRISTINE

You remember that, too . . .

RAOUL (continuing)

. . . Little Lotte thought: Am I fonder of dolls ...

BOTH (CHRISTINE joining in)

. . . or of goblins, of shoes . . .

CHRISTINE

. . . or of riddles, of frocks . . .

RAOUL

Those picnics in the attic . . . . or of chocolates . . .

CHRISTINE

Father playing the violin . . .

RAOUL

As we read to each other dark stories of the North . . .

(During this, we have seen various episodes in FLASHBACK, tinted in bright gold. These appear in the mirror over CHRISTINE and RAOUL's reflections; the scarf in the sea, YOUNG RAOUL emerging from the water to return it to YOUNG CHRISTINE; the picnic in the attic; her FATHER playing violin, wearing a cape. The clear and innocent adoration of a little girl for her talented, loving father.)

(End FLASHBACK with WIDESHOT of CHRISTINE looking at RAOUL.)

CHRISTINE

No, what I love best, Lotte said, is when I'm asleep in my bed,

and the Angel of Music sings songs in my head!

BOTH (looking up)

. . . the Angel of Music sings song in my head!

CHRISTINE (turning in her chair to look at him.)

Father said, "When I'm in heaven, child, I will send the Angel of Music to you". Well, father is dead, Raoul, and I have been visited by the Angel of Music.

RAOUL

No doubt of it. And now we'll go to supper!

CHRISTINE

No, Raoul, the Angel of Music is very strict.

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of RAOUL and CHRISTINE)

RAOUL

I shan't keep you up late!

CHRISTINE

No, Raoul . . .

(CUT to WIDESHOT OF RAOUL and CHRISTINE)

RAOUL

You must change. I must get my hat. Two minutes.. Little Lotte.

(He hurries out)

CHRISTINE (running after RAOUL, calling after him when she stops at her door frame. CUT to front of CHRISTINE outside)

Raoul!

(CUT to inside of her dressing room with her back to the camera. CHRISTINE closes her door and quietly picks up her hand mirror.)

Things have changed, Raoul.

(Tremulous music. CHRISTINE hears the PHANTOM'S voice, seemingly from behind her dressing room mirror.)

PHANTOM'S VOICE (CHRISTINE looks up)

Insolent boy! This slave of fashion basking in your glory!

(CHRISTINE looks to the mirror [OFF-SCREEN])

(CUT to WIDESHOT of dressing room mirror.)

Ignorant fool! This brave young suitor,

(CUT to another WIDESHOT of CHRISTINE’s back to the camera and the mirror at a distance.)

sharing in my triumph!

(CUT to WIDESHOT of CHRISTINE at front as she puts her hand mirror down and walks towards dressing room mirror.)

CHRISTINE (spell-bound)

Angel! I hear you! Speak - I listen . . . stay by my side, guide me!

Angel, my soul was weak - forgive me . . . enter at last, Master!

(CUT to dressing room mirror. We slowly move closer to the mirror.)

PHANTOM'S VOICE

Flattering child, you shall know me, see why in shadow I hide!

Look at your face in the mirror –

(CHRISTINE’S face comes closer to the mirror.)

I am there inside!

( [At CLOSE-UP] The figure of the PHANTOM becomes discernible behind the mirror. CHRISTINE’S face “becomes” that of the PHANTOM. [CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE walking closer.] )

CHRISTINE (ecstatic)

Angel of Music! Guide and guardian!

Grant to me your glory!

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE at left of screen walking closer to mirror.)

Angel of Music! Hide no longer! Come to me, strange angel...

(CHRISTINE walks towards the glowing, shimmering glass.)

PHANTOM"S VOICE

I am your Angel of Music... Come to me: Angel of Music ...

(CUT to outside where RAOUL comes to CHRISTINE’S dressing room door. Meanwhile, RAOUL has returned. He hears the voices and is puzzled. He tries the door. It is locked.)

RAOUL

Whose is that voice . . .?

Who is that in there . . .?

(CUT to CLOSE-UP of CHRISTINE at the mirror. Inside the room the mirror opens. Behind it, in an inferno of white light, stands the PHANTOM. He reaches forward and takes CHRISTINE firmly, but not fiercely, by the wrist. His touch is cold, and CHRISTINE gasps.)

PHANTOM

I am your Angel of Music . . .

Come to me: Angel of Music . . .

(CHRISTINE disappears through the mirror, which closes behind her. The door of the dressing room suddenly unlocks and swings open, and RAOUL enters to find the room empty.)

RAOUL

Christine! Angel!

(CUT IMMEDIATELY to Scene 5- THE LABYRINTH UNDERGROUND)
