Sunday August 5, 2001 •Elton's dream of Phantom film evaporates Ben Elton's screenplay for a film of Lord Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera has been turned down after a workshop read-through with a collection of singing stars, writes Vanessa Thorpe. The last time the two men collaborated was on The Beautiful Game, a musical about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which, although well received, was pulled after only a year. |
