Comments: ALW really goofed by not casting Michael Crawford for the movie POTO. No wonder the movie received bad reviews. In fact, compared to unbeatable, wonderful Michael, anyone that ALW cast in the role of Phantom wouldn't have made a difference. Michael was born to play that role. It's his. His incredible, angelic voice of his is unmatchable. The movie would have won Academy Awards for everything. Let's hope ALW wises up and releases the stage play on video with MC and Sarah Brightman. Maybe he can recoup some of his losses.

Comments: I was never lucky enough to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom, but I have the cd. Recently I saw the movie and it wasn't the same with out Michael Crawford. I enjoyed the movie, but kept thinking I would hear his voice. Can someone tell me what music is different in the Andrew Lloyd Webber version than in the 1943 version? Would appreciate any answers.

Comments: I fell in love with Micheal Crawford when I first heard his beautiful voice on a Best Musicals album, and my love has never died. It's so unbelievable that anyone could have a voice as beautiful as that! Every shred of credit he receives is not received undeservedly. I urge you fellow Phans, join me and book to see him in London in April and May, hear our angel sing again!

Comments: Why oh why did they cast Gerard Butler as the Phantom? It wold have been good if only the worlds greatest singer had been cast. Update fellow Phans, although he's taken a break, you can see the lovely Michael in The Woman In White in the west end from April!

Comments: I loved the Phantom movie. I love the story and thought the actors did a credible and good job. I will stick with the soundtrack as far as listening music goes though because nobody can beat Michael Crawford's voice. Having never been able to see the play (and wanting to for years), I'm happy to finally have the story in some form. The movie is getting a bad wrap; but I'm sure that absolutely nothing can compare to the theatre experience.

Comments: They've also been talking about it over here! On Tuesday when I was just flicking through the channels, I got to Channel 3 and I saw ALW being interviewed on 'This Morning' talking about the making of a movie on 'Sunset Boulevard'. If he really is thinking about the idea let's hope he doesn't blow it like he did for 'Phantom'.

Comments: Sorry if the following is more than a week late but USA Today ran an article on Monday, February 7, 2005, reporting this year's Screen Actors Guild awards. The article briefly mentioned the Phantom movie:

"Meanwhile, it seems the disappointing box-office returns for Phantom of the Opera haven't stopped Andrew Lloyd Webber from moviemaking. After her win [Best Actress in a Movie or Miniseries] for the TV movie The Lion in Winter, Glenn Close revealed she recently received a call from Sir Andrew about bringing her Sunset Boulevard character, Norma Desmond, to the big screen. She 'very much' wants the gig."

If the musical Sunset Boulevard finally gets its big screen due, I hope Close will reprise her role on-screen. Andrew better not make the same mistake he did with the POTO movie.

Comments: I dont agree with the actors they chose for chrisine and the phantom. but really only them. sure gerard butlers sexy, but hes not supposed to be. Micheal crawford and sarah brightman are the only actors who can play these roles. i did however, like their choices for the Firmin and André and Carlotta :P they were great. I heart minnie driver.

Comments: Movie looked great. Too bad the acting and singing wasn't as good. What were they thinking? The phantom should have been getting raves not pans. No wonder the movie is getting bad reviews and tanking at the boxoffice. Any fan of the show could have told them the key is the phantom.

They both inspire me more than anything in the world, besides my brother in the Navy. I'd do almost anything to meet Micheal Crawford and Emmy Rossom.

Comments: I just returned from Asheville after watching Phantom of the Opera with my friend, Robin. Let me confess that I knew nothing about the play or movie, allbeit I soon discovered Robin was a talking history book.

I left the theatre with mixed emotions and found myself trying to figure out where (and what) the missing pieces were. With no background, I was confused and, at times, saw the Phantom as a villin. Fortunately, Robin was there to rescue me from my confusion and fluently recited the story (and lots of history) on our ride home.

I had the pleasure of listening to the original cast recording as we rode. Michael Crawford's voice was mesmerizing and by far would have been the better choice. Bottom line...I see the movie as a potentially earth-shaking love story...by not this version. My interest has truly been peaked. I will now have to read the book, and hopefully fill the void left by the movie.

Comments: I happened to see Micheal Crawford as the Phantom when I was 5 or 6 in around.. 1996? I saw him in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and I don't remember much of the show, except that in the previous years I had memorised (almost) the entire score to the play from a tape from the original 1986 cast. According to my Mom, Micheal was amazing, and I sat there and sang along to the whole play (at the age of 6!)

I read some reviews of the film, and thy said that if you liked the play, you would like the movie. So hopefully I do. But I wish they could have brought in the original cast, that would have been awesome.

From a hardcore Phantom fan since the age of 3, Ciao Jill (now age 15)

Minnie Driver IS dubbed in both the soundtrack and the movie by Margaret Preece who played the role on stage. The only thing she sings live is the new song over the credits.

Comments: I saw the movie-

-and I am both too lazy and distressed to share my thoughts on it. To do so would be to spend the next five hours searching endlessly through a thesaurus for words to describe Gerard Butler adequately and, consequentally, spend the rest of the afternoon in mourning after my exhausted fingers have fallen off in protest. Thus, I will put my time, effort and fingers to better use. *sets off to remove Butler, Lloyd Webber and Schumacher from the face of the earth... and perhaps marry Michael Crawford along the way too*

Comments: I haven't seen the movie yet but I have heard snippets of the movie soundtrack. Music is absolutely key (no pun intended) in a musical, right? Upon hearing the samples of the soundtrack, I had these thoughts:

Listening to Emmy and Gerald is like when Jed Leland had to put up with Mrs. Susan Kane's opera debut in "Citizen Kane." I would rather tear up my program into ribbons than listen to these "singers" who actually can't sing at all. Emmy's vocals are not convincing enough to make her the toast of Paris. Even worse, Gerald is absolutely miscast as the Phantom. He was cast due to his good looks rather than his singing ability, which he clearly lacks for this paticular role. If memory serves, the Phantom is old and born-deformed and has to use only his voice and body language to communicate. Given that, don't try to claim Michael Crawford is too old for the role. Said claim has already been proven wrong and yet, some people (especially Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher) still don't get it.

While on the subject of singers, why hire someone who can't sing at all? I couldn't believe that Minnie Driver was cast as Carlotta and her vocals had been dubbed by Margaret Preece. The thought of seeing Driver lip-synch brings to mind Kathy Selden singing the vocals for screechy-voiced Lina Lamont in "Singin' in the Rain." I'm compelled to pull up the curtain to reveal the true singer behind the image who can't sing to save a life.

Why am I making judgements on a movie I haven't seen yet? I first got into Phantom by the original London cast recording alone. I wouldn't see the show until three years later. But the recording alone was what drew me to the show in the first place. When I did see the musical on stage in San Francisco, I enjoyed it but I had wished I had seen Michael as the Phantom. The closest I ever got to see Michael was in concert (also in San Francisco), which heightened my reasons for wanting him in the movie.

Having said that, seeing the movie would not make it better. The visuals can be made to be spectacular but the music is what truly makes or breaks the musical. Frankly, the visuals in this movie are incredibly tacky and cheap, with too much emphasis on blatant sexuality, which is in violation of the story's core meaning: beyond appearances lies the true heart of a person.

Here's another question. Make that several questions: why did Lloyd Webber and Schumacher miscast and ruin the integrity of the stage show? Why did they have total disrespect for the phans who have waited for this movie for years? Remember, Schumacher remarked that the Michael fans may not like it but should stay home then. Why did they not take the opportunity to cast Michael as they should have? Why Lloyd Webber and Schumacher did this is (as Robert Stack used to say) "an unsolved mystery." One thing is for certain: it took Lloyd Webber 15 years to bring one of the most successful musicals on screen. And 2 1/2 hours for Lloyd Webber and Schumacher to screw it up.

Lloyd Webber and Schumacher, you promised the movie will be a true adaptation of the stage musical but in the end, you both lied. And it is your lies and deceit that resulted in Michael's performance being lost forever.

Comments: So the Oscar nominations are out and there are no major ones for the movie of The Phantom of the Opera. Well, well. Some surprise. What could have been a great and glorious movie version of the most successful stage show in history became instead a piece of schlock. A combination of a flawed vision of where the story should go AND a completely incompetent actor/singer in the lead role made the movie a shambles instead of the masterpiece it might have been. What might have been. That phrase will haunt true Phantom lovers forever. This snub by the Oscars, plus weak box office figures, should tell Andrew Lloyd Webber once and for all what this campaign tried to tell him for years before he made his fateful decisions. Give us, the phans, the movie we want or you will suffer the consequences. But some people never learn.

Comments: Unfortunately I am one of the thousands, if not millions, who would have loved to see the sage production of the Phantom with Michael Crawford as the Phantom. But for me it would have cost me an arm and a leg to travel all the way to USA, find lodging and try to get the ticket at the same time. For me it was just a dream which will remain a dream. I only managed to see a video version of one of his concerts where he performed 3 pieces form the Phantom. That is whene I realised how unlucky I have been not to be able to see him on stage. Is there any way we, the unfortunate ones, could one day see Michael as the Phantom on DVD. Was there ever any recording of his stage performance that might one day be released as a DVD? It would be glorious for us all to have. It would take the world by storm. MICHAEL is the ONLY PHANTOM.

Comments: I saw Michael Crawford in Phantom when it opened in LA, I consider myself very lucky. His performance was unparalleled. I saw Phantom again in Chicago in 98, I did not like the Phantom at that production, he missed out on the sensuality Crawford brings to the piece. I really wanted to like the movie, it was just sad and flat with a complete loss of everything that made the stage production. Bad choices all around in casting, director and production staff. I wish more people could have seen what the only phantom did with the role.

I did See the movie. I liked it very much, but I would have rather have seen it with Michael and Sarah as the the Phantom and as Christine!

Don't dwell over the movie though! Michael is still the best in the business, no doubt!!

Comments: The movie is stunning visually but dragged down by a poor phantom. Butler can't sing as well as the worst phantom I've seen. With the right actor this movie would have been a shoo-in for best picture. Butler and Shumacher's insistence on a "hot" phantom took all the heart out of the picture. This is a dumbed down version aimed at silly teenagers and women who think Harlequin romances are great literature.

Comments: I just had to congratulate Mick Jagger on his Golden Globe win last night. I am DELIGHTED. Not only is he a legend in music but he has GREAT taste. Found his guestbook entry from 1999 this morning and thought I would repost it. This was a timeframe when many musicians were signing in while the campaign was in full gear. :) I hope he gets the Oscar as well, and for the record, I do not think much of Andrew's song submission for the category, "Learn to be Lonely." In my humble opinion it borders on cheesy, is substandard to the rest of the music from Phantom, and the words have almost NOTHING to do with the story that I can tell.

Ahem.

(But hey... the vent felt good.) ;)

So for fun here is Mr. Jagger's post, enjoy. :)

Comments: I actually found the film good- enough... It could have been much worse, it is Hollywood after all... There was just one thing that really- no two things!! Two thnigs that almost pissed me off!! 1- Gerald Butler and 2- his makeup! What was up with that?!! THAT was not a horrible and disfigured face, that was a rash!! It was NOT something you are put in a cage and shown like an animal for, he was just a little red around the right eye... It's a movie, for Eriks sake, it should've been something you would have gone home and had nightmares about!! Gerald- where's the passion?!! This is not just a thing you sing and get paid for, you have to make the audience feel the very dispair and madness the Phantom feels!! Untamed rage, fury!! This is a mad man with a temper like nothing else! We wanna see the very Flames of Hell in your eyes!!!! "All the sadness of the world"!! ........Okay, maybe a little exaggerated, but you get the point, right? It SO needed more passion!

From a little Dansish girl... :P And the biggerst Phan in the kingdom!!

Comments: I have never seen the stage version of this play, but my wife put me on to the Michael Crawford version of the soundtrack a while back, and I was riveted--it is one of the greatest performances in music-theatre history. So I was full of hope when we went to see the film three days ago. But then...

The film is beautiful to look at, and witty from time to time--sometimes unintentionally--but the missing element is the Phantom of the Opera.

This film is not titled "Christine Daae of the Opera," but it should have been, because no "Phantom" ever appears on the screen, and a kazoo, rather than a phantom, escapes from the theatre speakers. To hear "The Music of the Night" and find oneself hoping it will soon be OVER is the ultimate measure of the insult presented to the paying audience.

The real version of the musical is playing in the background as I write, and the sense is inescapable that Michael Crawford is somehow channeling a voice from Beyond, while Gerard Butler channeled only--for two grueling hours--some bore from Hell.

This is the most astonishing and egregious instance of miscasting I can remember. Ever. The magnitude of this is hinted in the fact that the most appealing and absorbing characters in the film were Raoul and Meg, mere stage furnishings in the original version.

Miscasting may now become an art unto itself: why not take a fresh look at "Gandhi," bringing in, say, Donald Trump as the lead, to reach a whole new demographic? Or an update of "The Godfather" with the broader appeal of Donnie Osmond atop the marquee? Or a re-recording of that now too-familiar "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," incorporating the more dynamic sound of the Archies? After all, as cartoons, they will never grow old!

So it goes. While the boat was sliding through the half-conscious scenario of the phantom's lake, I shut my ears and dimly recollected the mental melody of "The Pirate's Life For Me." When Butler strode manfully ashore in his mysterious sanctuary of music and turned to face the bewildered Christine, I heard a small voice in my skull mutter "Yeah, but where's Robin?" The Phantom of the Batcave revealed at last.

Apparently, someone thought Crawford was "too old" to play the Phantom in this film--at least that's the rumor. I get the impression, however, that because of his astonishing voice, women still find Crawford sexier in his sixties than they do Butler in his twenties or whatever he is. Especially when Butler attempts to sing, but manages instead to growl his way angrily around in search of the note he never seems actually to find.

So it goes. The film is still nice to look at--most of it--except for the moments Butler presents himself in his overbearing way--generating schism and unintended comedy--and provokes one to consider the mercenary nature of Hollywood, and to wonder whether it might have paid off better for the producers if they had snared Orlando Bloom to portray the Phantom, and then just dubbed in the voice of William Hung. Or maybe Elmer Fudd.

Comments: This film should be renamed "The Phantom of the Civic Light Opera" or as my husband says, "The Phantom of Some Other Opera". He says it is a great film to look at as long as you have control of the mute button.

ALW and Schumacher have effectively mutilated the memory of Michael Crawford's Phantom.

Emmy Rossum was a good Christine, but she could have been superior if she had something to play off of. Gerard Butler acting was poor but his singing was inexcusable!

Michael Crawford was the only choice for the film. The phantom is suppose to be old and unattractive (read the book), but his gift is his seductive voice (remember, he coaches her from the shadows). No one embodies this role but the voice & talent of Michael Crawford. Others have played this role, but only he became it.

The film is a sad, pathetic attempt at recreating a theatrical masterpiece. When the video comes out watch it with the sound off and Michael Crawford's soundtrack on.

Tsk Tsk Tsk to JS & ALW :-(

Comments: One more comment about Michael Crawford being "too old" according to Schumacher. Michael Crawford's Phantom is timeless -- too old doesn't exist. His Phantom is magic - tragic, pure and beautiful. His Music of the Night takes your breath away.

I watched the movie tonight. Michael Crawford used his hands so expressively as he sang. Butler had no idea how to sing that song or project the depth and despair of tormented love that the role demands. It was pathetic miscasting throughout the film.

Comments: I fell in love with the music of the Phantom and Michael Crawford's voice. Michael Crawford's Phantom broke my heart. This was a love story. Michael Crawford's voice and gestures brought that story to life and grabbed your heart. The Phantom was a little crazy, but his love was so pure and beautiful. Crawford conveyed every emotion with so much beauty and grace.

None of this happened in the movie. The singers couldn't deliver the music and the beauty of the sets and costumes couldn't compensate for the musical void. I felt nothing for Butler's Phantom.

I was so sorry to hear that Michael Crawford wasn't in this movie. He is the Phantom of the Opera. He is the music of the night... He always will be.

Comments: I have seen the Phantom at least twice on stage; I own the original C/D with Michael Crawford and Sara Brightman. I had expected that the movie was the original play. Patrick Wilson is performing in Tampa the Phantom but I have never heard him sing. He is the son of one of our TV news reporter. Although the movie was not to my expectations, I still enjoyed the music and I played my c/d's when I came home to hear what I saw on stage before. I listen to this website just to hear one of the excerpts of this famous music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I sure wish one day a DVD with Michael Crawford, etc... would be produced - it would certainly sell like hot cakes. Thanks

Comments: The film, from a cinematic point of view, was fairly pitiful. Forget the characters, the acting, the bad music, and look at just the film alone, and you can see that this is a ghost of what Phantom could have been. Schumacher almost seems to have crafted this movie to create a disconnect between the viewer and the characters. The only thing that holds it together is Webbers original score played by the 110 piece orchestra.

Comments: Dear Campaign Site team:

I have been out of the loop for about a year, working on launching a national magazine down here in New Zealand, and have limited my moviegoing to when sitting on flights on jets. While driving in downtown Auckland, I spied a billboard for an upcoming Phantom of the Opera movie. I asked my colleagues, 'Is Michael Crawford in it?' and was told, 'I don't think so.' To not have Mr Crawford in the role seems to be a broken promise—I thought it was a done deal, even if my source was a radio interview with him from over 15 years ago. Now to learn that it stars some chap chosen because he is handsome (?!?!) and is helmed by some other chap who killed the Batman series—let's just say that I'll be giving this one a very wide miss. I still can't overcome the shock at how the producers missed the entire principle of the emotionally fragile Phantom. Even if Mr Crawford is 'too old' as supporters of Mr Butler suggest, there must have been many others who could fill the role. And I note from your site, and from Google, that reviewers—both "snobby" and more regular folks—that a lot of people share your opinion. I would like to thank you for a site that at least allows us to consider how "it could have been". You guys are true Phans.

Closing thought: I can draw, but I sure ain't Picasso.

Sincerely,

Jack Yan, LL B, BCA (Hons.), MCA CEO, Jack Yan & Associates

I love POTO and I first saw it in London at Her Majesty's Theatre with John owen-jones as the Phantom. Is Gerald Butler really that bad? As soon as I see it I promise to come back with my reviews.
