Comments: To put things lightly... I'M PISSED! Please excuse my language but I am really mad. I think that both the phantom and Christine suck. NO passion whatsoever. Butler yells and the other chick trys to sound like a pop star. They took one of the greatest works of all time and ruined it. They, meaning the person who wrote it! I couldn't be more disappointed...

Comments: I wanted so much for Michael Crawford to play the role of the Phantom in the movie, and I am appalled at Warner Brothers and Andrew Lloyd Webber for casting what's-his-face instead. Be strong, Micheal, be strong!

Way to go, Andrew.

Comments: The time we have anticipated and feared for seven years (five years, personally) has come at last. The film version of the Phantom of the Opera has been made and it is soon to be released. I have seen the trailer, I have heard the full soundtrack, and I have come to realized that the "worst-case" situation may actually have been realized.

We have a decent cast for the film, for the most part, I think. Granted, many do not have the voices to sing the parts as they are on stage. In fact, I believe the only two who could certainly do that are Patrick Wison, a Tony-nominated Broadway actor, and Margaret Preece, who DUBBS Carlotta's singing voice (and appears briefly as the Confidate in Il Muto) and actually has performed the role of Carlotta in London's West End. Emmy Rossum has a beautiful voice, though quite immature, as her years are as such. Truthfully, there is much difference in the voice of a 17-year-old and that of a 21-year-old (the approximate age of Christine in the novel, as alluded to by Raoul's own age). I know, as a 20-year-old myself at college. My best friend's girlfriend is my college's leading soprano, and her voice puts Ms. Rossum's to utter shame. I have heard her sing selections from POTO which give me chills, and yet Emmy, though good, disappoints. If she acts the role well might be a forgivable casting, perhaps even favorable casting if she pulls off the characterization just right. However, as Crysania said, she simply "Does not have a voice that could take Paris by storm."

There is one star whose casting is completely unforgivable, though. That is the casting of Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera. Our worse fears have been realized. Not only has the definative Phantom, Michael Crawford, been prevented from preserving HIS role on film, but the actor who stands in his place cannot even sing the part without stetching and straining his voice in a way which sounds, frankly, terrible.

The truth is, my ideal was always to have Crawford as the Phantom in the film version. However, when I heard mentions of Peter Karrie or Hugh Jackman taking the role in the past, I held out hope that the film might still be a sucessful representation of the musical. I even had an open ear when I first had the opportunity to hear the new soundtrack. After all, Dave Willets, who was London's second Phantom, had no classical voice training. However, I was disappointed... disappointed and infuritated. We not only lost the definative Phantom, but the film is left with a Phantom who cannot, with any sincerity play a character referred to as the "Angel of Music."

My friends want me to see the movie... to comment on it as they themselves love the recording of the original show and have not seen the musical themselves. I am torn, as I am traumatized by the soundtrack itself and have not heard any real positive reviews of Butler's perfomance either, yet am still intrigued by the film and want to provide an accurate assessment for my companions.

I mourn now the loss of yet another definative characterization of a role lost to the ignorance of film producers.

Jake

Comments: I came across your website simply by trying to learn more about the upcoming movie version of Phantom of the Opera in theaters this Christmas. I have returned to this site so many times, I might as well make it my homepage! I love how you have integrated the orignal play with a script from 1990 and compared and contrasted the two. I've learned so much about Phantom of the Opera, and have become an avid fan. Thank you so much for this wonderful and highly educational site.

Comments: I understnd those whom have been blessed to see Michael Crawford, but there are those of us that would love the Phantom no matter who plays him. Yes, I would die a happy woman if I was lucky enough to see Michael in the broadway show, but I know as military wife that my dream may never come true. Please all enjoy the movie for the love of the story!

Comments: Spent some time last night getting acquainted more closely with the official Phantom movie site, and some other hops around the net. Watched a few video clips and saw some detailed photos of the cast, costumes, and sets.

I think it is very sad that the basic lesson that I found in the musical is apparently lost. I dislike very much the Phantom's appearance in the film. For me the point was always the beauty that came from within, and the Phantom that moved me did not seduce his Christine with a handsome countenance, a tan, and a broad chest. He used the voice of an angel, and body language. He was otherworldly... magical, regal, and in the end when unmasked, tormented. But Christine kisses him to show him that he is not alone, and she does not do it because he is a hunk and matinee idol... she does it from her heart despite his horrible disfigurement and appearance. And then he lets her go with love... I will never forget my first time in the theatre watching the final lair scene. My legs were shaking and I could barely rise from my seat to give my ovation. Around me people were crying, in later years when I saw the production I never saw the same reactions as those first few years at the Ahmanson. It was a storm, and a performance to remember... a sea of people at the stage door every night. I will never forget when Guillaume took over the mask, and as I was leaving the theatre and drove by the stage door there was no one there... it seemed incredibly sad to me.

In my opinion, the emotional drive of the story is hinged on the Phantom. He is the one to bring you to "savor each sensation." He is the soul of the musical, and final moral of the musical.

Michael Crawford had always said that the sensuality of the Phantom was never to be overt. It was in the holding back and tension that he drew you in, not to mention one hell of a PONR that was the most powerful thing I ever saw, and it had nothing to do with him pawing at Christine...

I will never understand why they apparently did not make this musical to hold the same values and lessons that so many of us found in the stage production. I suppose they may win over some of the younger theater attendees, although my teenage son is pretty much yawning at the thought of seeing the film. So are his friends.

For years fans of the show wrote letters and were virtually ignored. Schumacher told us to stay home. They apparently did not make this film for the fan base, perhaps they will find one with this version, we will see.

It was a long wait to the film's release... it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Just some thoughts after dusting out the corners and coming back to life...

Diane

Comments: I love Micheal Crawford and am sad to see the original musical, which I saw when I was little, go to the movies. I was actually hapy until I saw Warner Bros. was going to put it on. It's great that it's going to maintain the originality that ALW had wanted it to have. Warner Bros. can screw Harry Potter up all they want, but not with the Phantom unless they want me to go to their studio and start ranting and raving at them until they don't do anything.

If you go onto the apple.com website, you can see the Phantom of the Opera movie trailer. To preview it, go to apple.com and click on Quicktime. The second item underneath should say "Movie Trailers" click that and scroll down until you see The Phantom of the Opera.

If only all of us fans could go back in time and see Micheal Crawford in his performances...maybe it's not too late.

For all you regular Broadway Fans that have Dish Network, channel 6077 is SIRIUS Broadway's Best. They play all sorts of songs and the phone number is: 1-877-33-SIRIUS when it asks for the channel, push 77.

Comments: So good to see this site buzzing again, and to see the PHANS getting a voice in the media again! Nothing better than writers that decide to get the other side of the story instead of just going along and spouting the ridiculous crap that those in the business spout to each other. :) This movie could have been great. Instead it makes me physically ill. I still can't believe that the powers that be could call the voices that they hired "good", after hearing voices like Michael. Schedule them for a hearing checkup, I think they've lost theirs.

Comments: Most of the good buzz on this movie seems to be about Minnie Driver. If Carlotta is walking off with the picture it's in big trouble. Who ever heard of people walking out of the theater talking about Carlotta? The phantom HAS to be the dominant one or this is a farce. And Minnie Driver is DUBBED. How bad is that!

Comments: Michael is the one true Phantom of the Opera. Nobody can replace him.. Other actors can play the Phantom, but Michael is the real Phantom!! I hope ALW sees what he missed not having Michael in the Film version.. At least, ALW casted Michael as Count Fosco in the Woman in White and Michael is a huge success in it! He just won a award for the Variety's 52nd Awards for Best Outstanding Performance in his role.. Congratulations Michael! May your always be number one!

Comments: I still can't beleive they really shot it!!! Heard some preview clips from the soundtrack... and I just had the heretic thought that back then Banderas was not such a bad choice. Really, can't understand why ALW's requirements deteriorated with time!

And I have the feeling the whole thing is going to reflect negatively on the musical show.

Ahahahahaha! Ahahahaha! Aahahaha! BEWARE!!!!! Bad singing ahead! Yrs sincerely, The Opera Ghost

Comments: I just listened to the soundtrack (and don't think I bought it...I love previews in stores!). It is utter drivel. The "stars" can barely sing. Gerard Butler as the Phantom is laughable at best, utterly disgusting at worst. Phantom = older deformed man with the voice of an angel. Gerard = young attractive guy with the voice of a German shepard with laryngitis. Are we seeing a problem here? He is out of tune, possesses no sensitivity to the music (not surprising as his only claim to anything musical is a failed rock band), and has no phrasing ability whatsoever. He sounds like a bad Steve Harley. And if you've heard Steve Harley's rendition of the title song, you'll understand exactly how bad Butler truly is. Emmy Rossum has a good voice...for a teenager. She does not have the type of voice that could take Paris by storm. Perhaps in 10 years she might, with much training, but as is, she is weak and too childlike. Patrick Wilson is the only decent thing on this recording and even he sounds like he's toning back his voice a bit to match the utter weaknesses of the others. The only positive is the orchestrations on most of the songs (the electric guitar in the title song is a huge mistake orchestrationally...it destroys the song). This soundtrack is an embarassment. I would give it 0 stars. If you want a version of Phantom that's good, buy the original soundtrack (with Michael Crawford, the man who should have brilliantly brought the Phantom to the screen). Or better yet...go see the musical on stage. You won't be disappointed in the show like you will in this movie.

Comments: My husband and I saw the preview a few weeks ago (with the lead singing) and while we think the movie looks pretty, it sounds horrible. I have no opinion about who should be cast but I do have the opinion that if you are going to cast a lead role, cast it with someone that can at least sing the right notes. I think they faced serious backlash because the updated preview I saw tonight had only instrumentals. I am curious of whether or not they decided to dub in a singer who can actually sing.

Comments: I just downloaded the album to the new film and I am literally in tears... I've never heard anything so horrible in my entire life. At least Antonio had somewhat of an excuse with his problems with the music... but Gerrard has none. I am very dissapointed in the film and more so in Andrew Lloyd Webber, shame on him for defiling his own masterpiece. Even though Hugh Jackman is too young.. if they wanted a sexy Phantom couldn't they at least have picked him.. he has the sex apeal. God this is so frustrating... as proffetional singer myself I can't even keep up with the amount of bad notes and horrible technique in this film. Oh and Minnie had to have been dubbed because she said in an interview she never actually sings in the film, so that answers that. Jadelyn

Comments: Had to come back and add a thought...

A good friend of mine just told me that Minnie Driver was dubbed.

I had two thoughts on this. First one to hit my mind was, that is HILARIOUS. The best vocal performance in the whole film and it is a fake!

Second thought was, well Andrew... then why the HELL did you not dub Butler additionally?

There was one shot at this, and it was your masterpiece. This is what you leave behind to speak on this musical.

Well... I suppose I am vented now.

A really sad day.

Comments: Well...

I just listened to the files. :( (Hey Andrew, who sold out and put the files out to the public for free anyway...? Well, at least it is not money in your pocket.)

Have a lot of thoughts, and these are in no particular order... This is of course listening to the soundtrack without the visuals. GOD I hope to hell the visuals help.

Second act is FAR worse than the first.

I was pleased that the music is somewhat intact, far more than I thought it would be, good thing Ben Elton was shown the door.

The enunciation by the Phantom is beyond sad. Could you not teach him how to pronounce the lyrics???

Minnie Driver ROCKS. She is the only damn one who does.

I miss Michael, Sarah and Steve’s voices with all my heart.

“Think of Me” has one REALLY bad note, why did not Andrew correct it?

The Phantom's voice has no magical quality at all... They should have waited for Hugh Jackman if Michael could not do this!!!! Can you not do something more to enhance his musical performance, or is that the best that could be done with what you had to work with?!? Really sad.

Second act, “Wishing You Were Here” is HORRIBLE. “Point of No Return” even worse, OMIGOD. Andrew, do you remember S-A-R-A-H or have you gone TOTALLY stone deaf? It is a bad enough insult to Michael how this song is sung, but my god to have it recorded this way is beyond all else. And “Down Once More” is SO BAD.

But to top it all off, the last strains when the audience should be in floods of tears and the Phantom sings (well he tries) It’s over now the music of the night... My GOD. Could you not have dubbed or enhanced it? That would be better than what I just heard.

And by the way, “Learn to be Lonely” is CHEESY. Was that the best you could do for a song to be nominated at the Oscars?

You are really a sad man. Not only did you sell out the fans, you sold out the music.

Well, good luck Andrew, hope you have your hit. Hope you can look in the mirror, ‘cause you are there inside...

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber promised 2 things for POTO. No one would be dubbed and the music wouldn't be changed. I repeat-the music would not be changed for the actors. Well, it has been. So much for his word but then he never did have any respect for the Phantom Phans.
