Comments: The international edition of Time has this to say about the movie.

The dazzling set (in Schumacher's opening, a dusty, monochrome opera house is restored to its glistening prime by a tidal wave of color) and the driving Lloyd Webber score threaten to steal the show away from its stars. Rossum is a virginal, thin-voiced Christine, and Butler, despite a silky falsetto, hasn't got the range or kick for the big sing. There's a climactic moment on the opera house's snowy roof after the Phantom has eavesdropped on Christine and Raoul. He rages, the orchestra whips up a storm, and Schumacher's camera seems to leap off the roof, plunging headlong toward the street below. But there's no bungee jump in Butler's singing — as the camera dives, his voice musters nothing more than a gentle swoop.

Despite Butler's muted performance, Schumacher's kinetic camera work and some fine supporting turns could help make the film a minor Christmas hit. But Schumacher must have been banking on his unknowns to deliver revelatory, headline-making performances, just as Colin Farrell did in Phone Booth. Alas, they don't, and without big names or great word-of-mouth, this movie musical could be a hard sell. Better hope those theater fans like popcorn

Comments: I saw Michael Crawford in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in 1990 (I think it was) in L.A. He was incandescent in the role. Imagine my surprise when I saw the trailer for the movie last night. Who is the actor they hired? He cannot even sing. My husband almost fell out of his seat, laughing that he could sing better. What a tragedy that Michael Crawford was not hired to bring his characterization to the screen. I'm sorry for all those who will be cheated. We won't--we definitely will not be seeing that movie.

Comments: What a shame that Joel Schumacher felt he had to lower the standard for the movie in order to attract teenagers. Why cast someone who had to take singing lessons and be edited in the recording studio in order to do the part? From the talk I've been hearing Minnie Driver is stealing the show. It must be pretty bad if Carlotta is the best thing in it.

Comments: Michael Crawford IS the Phantom... No one can match the style, charisma and sensuality he has put into the role.. I've seen Phantom from New York to Toronto to Boston and Los Angelos and my 2 showings of Phantom in LA w/Michael Crawford as "The Phantom" are imbedded in my mind forever..I'm blinded by other talent but I'm honest.. He Is the one and only Phantom in my book...

Comments: I was never fortunate enough to see/hear Michael Crawford play the role of the Phantom. I saw "The Phantom of The Opera" in Toronto,Canada and Cleveland, Ohio. Unfortunalely for me, neither performance showcased Michael Crawford. I did hear him perform a few of the songs from Phantom on Public Service TV and of couse it was outstanding.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the only one who can do justice to the role of the Phantom. I've grown up listening to him sing that part and no one else could ever top that. He's the embodiment of perfection. Haunting, chilling, the most vivid performance of all time. Yay for Michael!

Comments: I saw Michael three times in Phantom when he first opened in London. He took my breath away and made the hairs on the back of my kneck stand up! I have also seen it performed by someone else and the magic wasn't there. Only Michael can bring the Phantom to life for me. Making the film with someone else is like the Hulk being a girlie!!

Comments: I just wanted to say that I think that this movie is going to be a disgrace to The Phantom of the Opera and Michael Crawford deserved this role. The actors cast in this film cannot sing and they are the disgrace to this film. Andrew Lloyd Webber should be ashamed of himself for selling out and wanting young actors rather than good singers.

Comments: I have seen "Phantom" three times on stage. I've never had the privilege of seeing Mr. Crawford perform the role, but I have listened to the CD countless times, and his voice is so beautiful that it never fails to move me. Mr. Crawford should have been the first and foremost choice for the role, since he is the definitive Phantom and was a major factor in the production's success. Even though he's older now, the mask and facial makeup would hide most signs of aging...not that there's much to hide, since Mr. Crawford doesn't look his age to begin with. Both Lloyd Webber AND Schumacher are trying to appeal to those in the under-30 crowd who have never seen the stage production by passing up established, talented performers like Mr. Crawford and instead getting popular young actors with sub-par vocal talents to star in the movie. They are going to end up ruining it. Shame on them!! People who have never seen the stage production and go to see the movie will, I'm afraid, probably wonder why Phantom was such a big hit in the first place. I sincerely hope I'm wrong and the movie turns out to be great, but I doubt that will be the case. They should have gone with Mr. Crawford if they wanted to make a truly great film.

Comments: It's really a disgrace that Michael Crawford isn't doing this movie. He IS the Phantom, no one else can do him justice! And they say Michael Crawford fans should just stay home. There's someone who really wants their movie to flop. I'm a huge Michael fan, and a phan in general, so I STILL think it ought to be him in that movie.
