Comments: Oh my frickin' God! I just can't believe this. I have been a freakishly devoted Phantom fan for several years, and when i first saw the trailer for the new movie a couple of weeks ago, I was extatic. I have no idea how I hadn't known about it before. One of the first things I said about it to my friends was that they had better stick to the original cast and score because I would know if they cut anything out. Today I thougt I would do a quick search on the movie to make sure it was coming out in December (my birthday is in Dec.)and I saw something about Micheal Crawford. Yea! so he is going to be in it (I thought) and went on this site. I am appalled! I don't have any problem with changing the cast for individual tours (the cast can't be on call all the time), but for the movie that will bring Phantom to the masses they NEED to cast at least Micheal Crawford as the Phantom. I am so disgusted with them, I don't even know if I'll go. I wish it wasn't too late to sign another petition. Lord knows, maybe my petition would have made a difference.

Comments: If the movie flops, then please consider releasing either video archives of the original cast or a new complete filmed stage version with Michael Crawford after he finishes his run in "The Woman in White."

Comments: I cannot believe Michael Crawford is NOT playing the Phantom...He IS the Phantom! What a disappointment! Michael Crawford IS a Hollywood name and his voice is the voice of the Phantom. From his bio, looks like Gerard Butler is virtually a nobody. Antonio Banderas would have made a better choice but even though his Evita role was a success, I certainly don't think he has the voice to do the Phantom. GIVE US MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!!!

Comments: Why can't they have Crawford as the phantom? Antonio dosn't have the looks. The phantom is french isn't he, so why do they want to have a latino playing a french?

Comments: My..dear god.. I'm horrified, deeply. I'm an 18 year old West Virginian girl, who loves the idea of Broadway so very much. I've never had the wonderful chance of seeing Crawford on stage, but I've heard of what he does, I know how he glides across the stage with such finesse and grace that no other Phantom has had the chance of actually doing themselves. It pukes me that they're picking some horrible, stupid actor who can't even sing, who can't glide, who damned well can't do anything like the Phantom. The Phantom is the king of the stage, he must sing, he must do everything perfectly, and only one man can do that. I mean..look back at My Fair Lady, and how that one extremely handsome, young actor said he wouldn't be happy if they didn't choose the real stage actor for Professor Higgins. Jesus. Can't Webber look on the past and see the future? God, it really pisses me off.

Comments: Having had the privilege (and I don't use that word lightly) of meeting Michael Crawford and of hearing his Phantom live, I can't tell you how saddened, and yes, angry, I am with this entire farce.

We could have had a WONDERFUL Phantom on screen in Crawford, and here instead we get a semi-interesting actor who's done nothing much as yet except B movies and who himself admits he "cannot sing much" at all.

Micheal, wherever you are, please kmow that my heart broke for you even as I watcedh the trailer to the film. Gentle, kind, and decent man, this is such a grave and horrible injustice I can hardly type.

From what I can tell the POTO film looks pretty enough, but already in my heart I know it lacks the one thing it needs to be a truly great version of this beloved musical and that dear man is YOU. I just can't bring myself to see it, and that says something because I all my life I have dearly loved "Erik" in all his incarnations, from Chaney to Crawford and beyond.

Sadly it seems in Gerard Butler they settled for "blatant sex appeal" and "obviously visible hunkiness" rather than going for real beauty and real talent.

Pity, on both counts because they couldn't be more wrong in this case with their choice. I've got nothing personal against Butler. He's got potential, but he's NOT you. He's NOT the Phantom. He admittedly can't SING the Phantom and no amount of rewriting the role "for more talk" will be able to surmount that lack.

The Phantom of the Opera SINGS, and sings BEAUTIFULLY, and that's just how it IS. Erik seduces Christine with his music, with his SOUL, not with his dashing good looks! THAT he nearly succeeds is the beauty of the character and the story, and you just cannot change that!

I've seen you, and I've seen your "Erik" and I know that given the chance you and POTO could have been box office magic, that you in your shy, modest way were more than up to the challenge of the task.

Never before have I ever wished for anything I love so much to succeed so little, but in this case I sincerely hope ALW loses every DIME he put into this film and THEN SOME.

He DESERVES to lose his shirt on this one, I am sorry.

Vindictive, yes, and bad of me to think that way I'll admit, but TRUE nonetheless.

God bless, Michael and my sincerest condolences to you, sweet man.

You surely deserved better.

Morrighan

Comments: I Love The Phantom of The Opera, and was fortunate enough to see it when it was i Atlanta, GA. However I have had the original broadway sountrack and have worn it out. Michael Crawford IS the VOICE of the Phantom. Please give all of his fans the chance to see him on the big screen and to hear that amazing voice again. Thanks

Comments: Michael Crawford is the Phantom. I was exposed to the soundtrack, and fell in love with the voice of the Phantom. Michael Crawford brings all emotions to the role and out of those who see it or hear it. I believe Michael Crawford should the Phantom, and once again bring this majestic character he knows so well to the big screen.

Thank you!

Comments: I hope they don't screw up my favorite musical in the whole wide world or else I will cry forever and ever...or just be extremely pissed at whoever thought it was a good idea to cast an untalented person as the Phantom (who I happen to be in love with). Michael is the only one who can pull this off...I mean, he IS the Phantom!

Comments: I've seen many screen versions of the Phantom, all of which were lacking. I'm glad a respected company are now endeavouring to produce it, and I have faith they will do it well. Should they make their choice wisely, I don't doubt there is an actor out there who could do the role justice. However, Michael Crawford is the voice and presence of the Phantom, and I would be more than thrilled to see him fullfil the role himself. I fell in love with the Phantom of the Opera, and have only seen one theatre production of it. I would love to see Michael's part performed as it should be, even if it is a film version.

Comments: The first time I saw Phantom performed by Santa Clara Vangaurd Drum Corps in 1988 I was totally in love with the music and opera. Michael Crawford is the Phantom and he embodies every aspect of that role as does Sarah Brightman for her portrayal of Christine.
