Comments: Despite how much I respect Antonio as an actor, this just isn't in his field of specialty. I have been a fan of Phantom and particularly Michael Crawford ever since I heard the first notes from the "Phantom" cd. I never got the chance to see him perform the part live, so I am hoping that Warner Bros. will awaken and realize that Michael is the only logical choice for the movie production.

Comments: I'm not sure this went throught the first time; so, here again is my 2 cents worth: no one, but no one, can portray Erik, the character created by Gaston Leroux in The Phantom of the Opera, with such depth and emotion as Michael Crawford can. He is Erik, the Phantom. Warners' Brothers would, indeed, be making a mistake beyound their wildest imagination is they do not properly cast Michael as the Phantom!!!

IT HAS TO BE MICHAEL! I have performed in (amateur) musical theatre for the last 35 years so I believe I know something about MISCASTING. It must be obvious to any intelligent casting agency that certain people are RIGHT for parts whatever the other considerations might be. Have the courage of your convictions...money isn't everything. Comments: If the rumors I've been hearing about John Travolta as the Phantom are true, all I can say is "puhleeeaaassse?!?!" This kind of miscasting of big name actors is the reason so many movies suck these days!>> >> **Thank you for your comments. We here at the Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign feel the way you do. John Travolta's not going for the role now however, Antonio Banderas is. We're trying to get WB and ALW to realize that we the public will accept no "substitute." We want the original Phantom as promised by Warner Bros. years ago and that's what our goal here is: to promote the casting of Michael Crawford in this movie.**

To have Antonio Banderas play the role is a joke and an insult to Phantom phans all across the world. I can definetly say I would not waste a dime or my time seeing the film with Antonio disgracefullly playing the Phantom role. Michael Crawford is most deserving of the role, WAKE UP WARNER BROS.

Comments: There is ONE & only ONE Phantom of the Opera - Michael Crawford. I have seem 5 different performers in the role of the Phanton. NONE of the others can match the sensitivity, depth & passion that Michael gives the character. This is not to degrade anyone else. It's just to state that: if you're going to make a movie, it can be 'first rate' ONLY IF the 'first rate' actor is cast in the lead role

Comments: I just attended my 3rd "Phantom of the Opera" (Really Useful Theatre Co) here in St. Louis on Sunday. While Brad Little presented a credible "Phantom," he still cannot sing as well as Michael Crawford. I, too, was devasted to learn of the choice of Banderas as the Phantom! :-( Michael made that role, and is the standard that others try to imitate (bravo, Brad! wonderful performance!) But please let us have Michael Crawford on the big screen!

Based on that soundtrack, I would have to say Michael is a very good singer. I have seen him sing on PBS, and he sings with a lot of emotion. I have no doubt that he is a very good actor. He's also kind for starting all those charities.Michael Crawford is my role model sort of, and becaue of him, I'm more interested in singing (I've always been interested in acting).I'm going to try to hear more of him. You know what? I don't care. Just cast Michael Crawford in the lead and get the darn movie made! Comments: I agree wholeheartedly with you that Michael Crawford is the only choice to play the Phantom in any proposed film version of the Broadway play. And perhaps I am simply a cynical individual, but has anyone considered this possible scenario (remember we are dealing with Hollywood-types here)? Could this whole situation be a huge publicity ploy on the part of Warner Brothers? They announce someone obviously unsuitable for the role. Everyone gets upset and protests quite loudly that doing so is unreasonable and unthinkable. Warner Brothers now has unlimited free publicity for their upcoming movie at a time when most of their recent films have not exactly been blockbusters. They ride the tide, don't make any public comment, and let the outrage feed on itself. Then, when all seems hopeless, they announce, "Gee, in response to public demand, we have decided to cast the part with the one person everyone wants to see." Every news story done while the film is being shot will, of course, make mention of the fact that the film began shrouded with controversy; a controvery that was finally resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Every film review will, of course, rave about Warner Brothers brilliance in coming to its senses and making a film destined to become a Hollywood classic. I cannot imagine a film critic who could pan a film starring Crawford, especially when they take into consideration what the alternative almost was. This entire situation is beginning to sound more and more like a PR executive's dream. After all, how many people who may otherwise not be interested in seeing another film version of "Phantom" will suddenly rush to buy a ticket simply to see what all the fuss was about? I sincerely hope with all my heart that Crawford is cast in the film. However, a part of me also sincerely hopes that we are not being used. Ali Paskun

Performance quality should be the overriding factor versus "$$$$$ BOX OFFICE $$$$$". In fact, the movie version should make every attempt to cast the original London Cast. Warner Brothers cannot realize the magnitude of the mistake they will commit if they cast Antonio Banderas. Just the idea is laughable and ridiculous. Michael Crawford was the ultimate Phantom of the Opera, and a movie without his beautiful, sensuous voice is too horrible to be contemplated.

At home I have the CD with Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I have listened to it heaps of times (My mother has too) and after looking at your site, I think Michael Crawford definitely deserves a movie role as the Phantom. I have only seen one Phantom movie, (starred Robert Englund) and that scared me to death. It was real nice to see Carlotta become vegetable soup and a couple of people losing their skin. Yuck! Anyway, I will never watch it again. About this 1990 movie, was it going to star Crawford? Do you have any other information about it? Let me know. Thanks Dale Barnard P.S- I don't think Warner Bros. know the real music of the night

Comments: I would very much like to see Michael Crawford perform the role of The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster movie-musical... Crawford is the reason for the Tony awards that the show won in 1988 and he should be given the chance to act the part again on the silver screen.Joel Grey was not a famous film actor but his role in the movie of Cabaret gave him an Academy Award and the same challenge should be given to Mr.Crawford. he may not be a big selling star like the people that are up for the role but I would not want to see an untalented person take on my favorite Broadway role. If Banderas gets the part, he would be giving ALW a bad casting reputation. First off, Phantom is not spanish (not racist- its truth) and second, he was already in Evita- its time for Michael to come on back. GIve him a shot. Thank you.

Comments: Dear Sir, September 06, 1998 We understand that there is a movie of the Phantom of the Opera in the making, and it has come to our attention that Michael Crawford is not the starring role. This is so sad as Michael Crawford is the person who has made the stage production what it is today. If Mr Crawford is not chosen to play his role that he has made so famous worldwide, I fear the movie will not succeed at the movie theaters and what an injustice to the citizens who have supported the productions. If Antonio Banderas must be in the film, why not have him play Raoul as he is much more suited for the character. Thank You for Your Time, Ethan Tarris

Comments: Okay here it is and this is my humble opinion. This is a sad commentary on the way that films are made today. No longer can we expect the timeless tributes to the lost art of the musical. No, now we can expect nothing from the major Hollywood studios but their continuing race to make money, money, money, and it will all be at the sake of musical movies. It is enough to make anyone lose their temper and all we can now hope for is that "the powers that be" will lose some sleep. Hah! Who heard of anyone in modern day Hollywood with a conscience? If they had one they would be using the man best suited for the Phantom in the movie. No mystery there. Michael Crawford the Phantom of the Opera for all time. Thank you, Claudia

Comments: Dear Sarah, We at the campaign fully support the theatre and the artists who continue to bring the experience to all people of the beauty and wonder of a live performance. However, if this movie is to be made, we are campaigning to ensure that it is treated with the love and respect that this cherished masterpiece, Phantom of the Opera, deserves. If Hollywood continues to advocate the casting of a box office draw to line its pockets with money from the unknowing masses then, we are with you! However, we would love to have Andrew Lloyd Webber release for public viewing the video he is said to have squirreled away of the Original Phantom of the Opera cast, taped in London. Now, let me state here for the record that this guestbook was not started as a forum for debate, and we are not seeking entries to discuss the merits of the film translation of the play. This guestbook was started solely as a support for Michael Crawford, and for the fans who wish to see him star in the movie as was promised to him and all of us in 1991. We thank you for your entry and for your sincere support and dedication to the live Performing Arts. Sincerely, Diane Flogerzi ********************************* PLEASE!!!! Don't let the media do to theatre what they want to. Theatre is one of the only forms of live entertainment left where the performer isn't screaming his head off at the audience. Do you really want what happened to Vaudville to happen to the theatre? Pretty soon no one will go to the theatre any more. Why should they when they can see it on video? :-(

Comments: MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. IF WARNER BROTHERS CAST BANDERAS OR ANYBODY OTHER THAN MICHAEL, THEN ALL TRUE CRAWFORD AND PHANTOM FANS SHOULD VOTE WITH THEIR FEET AND STAY AWAY FROM ANY SHOWINGS OF THE MOVIE OR ANY ATTEMPTS TO SELL THE VIDEOS AFTERWARDS. MICHAEL CRAWFORD DESERVES TO BE THE PHANTOM IN A MOVIE VERSION OF THE SHOW. HE HAS CERTAINLY GOT MY VOTE.

Comments: Well ... What can I say that hasn't been said already ... ??? ... I feel strongly that Micheal Crawford should take the part of Phantom in the movie ... It would be a crime not to ... He is made for the role ... what is more he worked hard to reach the standard required for going on stage with the show ... At the end of the day he would be the only rational choice ... and looking at this guestbook I see that I am not one of a select few with this opinion !!!

Comments: how could anyone possible see the Phantom as someone other than Michael Crawford. This is yet one of the stupid things that movie people do. Why bother bringing a stranger to the silver screen to play phantom, when Michael Crawford is "THE PHANTOM" Antonio Banderas....I don't think so. I know I won't be one of those Phantom Phans standing in line to watch my Phantom with a spanish accent. Antonio, stick to Melanie, leave the music to the real Phantom of the Opera-That would be Michael Crawford. Jaye Brown Canada

Comments: As a music instructor and lover of musicals, I agree with your quest! Look at history... Audrey Hepburn who couldn't sing takes Julie Andrews' role in My Fair Lady and what happened to Julie later? Do you remember Paint your Wagon? Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing? I still cringe! You mentioned many successful transfers from stage to screen. Weren't Shirley Jones and Gordon McCray on Broadway before doing the screen versions? And of course Fred Astair, et al started on stage. I'm sure the studios worry about name recognition and box office draw. I would be interested to see how many "common folks" know the name Michael Crawford and associate him with the Phantom. I never got to see him perform the Phantom, but love the sountrack. Let's face it, there's no one in Hollywood who can sing the role and it would be a cheap shot to dub Michael Crawford over someone else. Good Luck, Bruce Drake

Comments: How could you even consider anyone else but Michael Crawford to play the Phantom in the movie version? Michael's singing is fantastic and boy could he hold those notes, he's sexy and embodies exactly what you would want to see in the movie version of the play. I have seen the play many times, own the original soundtrack of the POTO and just seen Michael recently (June 30) in New York. His voice sounded so good. You will be making a big mistake by someone other than Michael Crawford as the Phantom of the Opera. Very truly yours, Adela Buffa

Comments: HEY YOU PRODUCERS OF PHANTOM - I THINK YOU NEED TO SEE "EVITA" AGAIN AND TELL US WHAT ANTONIO BANDERAS IS SINGING? WE CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS AND HE IS supposed TO BE TELLING THE STORY! QUITE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DISTINCT SINGING VOICE OF MICHAEL CRAWFORD AND "HARD TO UNDERSTAND" ANTONIO BANDERAS.

Comments: Greetings, It should be noted (as many times as is necessary) that MC has already done a full production video of "Music of the Night". It, I think, puts to rest any notion that the Phantom cannot survive the translation into a medium other than "the theatre". That being said, I doubt any other actor could breath more life into the role of the Phantom on film. The video is only a taste of how magnificent the film could be with MC in the title role.

Comments: After seeing Michael Crawford in Concert in Tampa, FL, I cannot imagine anyone else in the role. Michael's voice is so extraordinary, anything else would be insulting. Antonio Banderas would only look silly lip synching his words and I don't think his voice is powerful enough to do the role justice. The Phantom is not only about the songs, but the pathos of the man. Banderas is TOO ypung and good looking. Michael Crawford is still very good looking and still a good age to play the part. Please reconsider. I would suggest Mask only ,no clown make up as I saw in the program--Yuck!

Comments: I am a fellow fan of the phantom of the opera, and most of all Michael Crawford. I must say that casting Michael as the lead in the movie would be the best thing Hollywood could do, when people think of the phantom, they always think of Michael Creawford, and since the phantom has always been see as HIS musical, the same as Aspects of love is Michael Balls musical then it would only be right to cast him as the man part once again, this show is big in the theatre, it could also be big in the movie views,as long as the parts were played right. you alone can make this song take flight. He deserves to be the one for the role of Phantom, because he is the only actor in the world who can make "The Phantom of the Opera" live and breath and he alone should recreate his role for the future film.

Comments: Your Web Page says it much better than I - Michael Crawford, and no one else, should be the one to portray the Phantom in the movie. I'm sure Warner Bros. feels they need top dollar, younger actors in order to make this movie a success. They are so wrong. Look at "Titanic" and it's success. The story, presentation and proper casting are what make great movies - not necessarily "big" names. Cast Michael in the lead and, if Warners feels it is necessary to grab the younger set, select the Travolta's and Banderas' for supporting roles. Those are important parts to the story, too! Good luck in this quest. Judy Denny

Comments: I saw Phantom twice in LA, the first time with Michael Crawford, the second time with Robert Guillome. There was no comparison. With Michael Crawford I was totally oblivious to time and the present; I only felt moved by his voice, his songs, his emotions, his expressions of unrequited love. I did not feel any of that with Robert. I also so Phantom in Houston several years later, and again was somewhat disappointed . I have since purchased numerous CD's and tapes of Mr. Crawford's. I must admit I have seen Antonio Banderas in several movies and find him lacking as an actor, over-rated musically and somewhat cartoonish. I don't consider those the qualities needed to portray the Phantom, but I know Michael Crawford has those qualities. I feel it would be a shame to deny him this opportunity and a mistake to deny fans everywhere to experience his talents on the big screen. Thank you! Susan

Comments: Does anyone remember what a bomb "Mame" was when it became "Lucy Does Mame"? It should have starred Angela Lansbury, who can actually sing, dance and act without Fred and Ethel. With all due respect, the big name and money politics of not having Michael Crawford doing a role he brilliantly crafted, performed and made famous will be an enormous creative and economic disaster. And will alienate zillions of people who pay lots of money at the box office. Banderas hasn't the voice or the talent, nor is he anywhere believable as a middle-aged, disfigured and tortured man desperately in love with a woman he can't have. No matter what he says. No matter what his agent tells you. Transient heart throbs look pretty with Madonna, but that's about all. Get the bankers out of the Business or you'll soon have Donald Trump and Bill Gates doing the remake of "It's a Wonderful World" on ice and Christmas will have to be cancelled. What are you thinking of anyway? Wake up moguls. Cheers, Elynor Vine

Comments: Michael Crawford is the diamond of all the phantoms. To me it is inconceivable that either Andrew Lloyd Webber or Warner Bros. would want to use a cubit zirconium in place of the real gem. Because of the diamond that Michael is, the value of the POTO movie and subsequent videos would only increase with time if Michael Crawford immortalized Erik. Margaret Hutchison

We saw it several times with different artists, in several different countries, but none of them captured the role the way that Michael did. Comments: Michael Crawford is the only actor/singer qualified to bring the Phantom to the screen. Casting anyone else is that role would be a disgrace. I have loved Lloyd Webber's musical version of this story for years, and have seen the stage show several times. However, I would NEVER consider supporting (with my time and money) a film version in which Crawford was not the Phantom. And I am not alone. I personally know many people who enjoyed "Phantom" because of Crawford's electrifying performance in the lead role. I know the would not be enticed to see a film version without Crawford. I think it would be in WB's best interest to reconsider this casting decision.

Comments: I wasn't as fortunate as many, to have seen Phantom with Michael Crawford, but once I did see the play, I raced out to buy the CD which is all of Michael. I can still remember listening to him and closing my eyes so I could picture him on stage putting his heart and soul into "The Music of the Night". I saw that he was going to be in New York on June 30 and July 1. I went to Manhattan to meet him at his record signing on June 29th. On June 30th I was sitting in the audience at Radio City Music Hall listening to Michael, my breath was taking away, his voice was so strong and full of emotion as he sang the tunes from Phantom that you believe that he really is the Phantom. I am a fan of Antonio Banderas, but not as the Phantom......only as Antonio Banderas.

Comments: i had the pleasure of seeing michael crawford on stage in new york when he was the phantom and can't imagine anyone else in this role. not only did he have the ability to handle a physically demanding role, but his vocal range and ability was captivating. despite the fact that michael is older now, he still maintains a strong stage presence and certainly maintains the vocal ability of past years. to take antonio banderas and place him in this role is to appease fans who appreciate lesser talent. it seems that mr. banderas has had few roles recently which have been critically acclaimed or have been box office successes. where is the logic in placing him in the role of phantom...

Comments: I just have to say that I have seen Phantom on several occasions and was fortunate to see Michael perform. Although all the performers who played the Phantom did an outstanding job, I must say that when Michael sings you not only hear the words..you FEEL them, you feel the emotion. I do not believe any other actor/singer can capture what Michael does. Michael absorbs himself in the role completely...a sign of a true talanted artist. Any important production such as a movie..to be authentic and worthwhile should include Michael Crawford. Only he alone can do it justice.
