Comments: MY GOSH! They're thinking of casting someone besides Mr. Crawford? The blasphemy! I heard last summer that they were planning to make a movie version, and I couldn't help but blurt out to the friend who told me, "Oh! I do hope they use the same people!" Michael Crawford IS the Phantom and Sarah Brightman IS Christine Daa?!

Comments: ' He offered to sing for me... and the moment he started, I knew we had the guy. '

These are the words of Harold Prince, describing Michael Crawford's audition for ' Phantom '.

Comments: I am deeply saddened at the news that Michael Crawford will not be starring as the Phantom of the Opera in the upcoming movie... I remember seeing him as the Phantom for the first time at the Majestic Theater in 1988 when I was only 5 years old. It would've been nice to relive that in something that I owned.

Comments: I have been appauled by the thought that someone other than Micheal is playing the Phantom. The story speaks to us but, he was the one who made me listen. He IS the voice. I wish they would just release a version of the Musical to VHS or DVD. I for one, will not go to a movie version, if Micheal is not the Phantom.

Comments: In my mind, the Phantom of the Opera and Michael Crawford are synonymous. I have seen Phantom of the Opera eight times in various cities and countries and all my experiences were good, but none were as good as the first time when I had seen Michael Crawford play the Phantom. Without Michael Crawford in the starring role of this movie I foresee another Hollywood dud instead of a mega hit. I can see the weeks of very expensive media HYPE and the movie on DVD 4 weeks later. I hope that Hollywood wakes up and what about Sarah Brightman?

Comments: I saw Phantom yesterday again and no one can take Michael Crawford's place. But for them to even THINK about having someone else play the part is ludricous. The only person who can play the phantom is Michael. If he doesn't many people I am sure will not even go pay to see the movie anyway.

Comments: Put the real Phantom on the screen, not someone who has to prove himself. At the same time, why not bring in Sarah Brightman to play her role as well...

I think Mr. Lloyd Webber will be disappointed at the box office if he tries to bring the movie up to date, instead of going with the tried and true!

Comments: If there's anyone who can make the hair on the back of my neck tingle it's Michael Crawford! You cannot replace the emotion and fervor of this magnificent man. I own the original audio cassette and I listen to it over and over, in awe at how spectacular Michael sings. Without him the music will slowly vanish and the only remembrances of his voice will be kept on CDs and cassettes but never on film. He's the only reason I want to sing. Making a film will keep his legacy and his spirit alive in all who watch it.

Comments: Tell Mr. Lloyd Webber that I for one will not see the movie unless Michael is in it and I certainly wouldn't buy it. He is the Phantom. I've seen the play 3 times and the last time was without Michael and it just wasn't the same. The other Phantoms just can't put the same feeling in it the Michael does.

Comments: I pray to God that they'll make this into a movie! It would be awesome if Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman would star in it! I've only seen the play once, but it does something incredible for me, there are no words to describe it. As I listen to the music sometimes I get tears in my eyes. Everything about The Phantom Of The Opera is absolutely beautiful!!! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! Come on Andrew, please.

Comments: I have looked up to michael crawford since the first time i saw the Phantom of the Opera at the tender age of three. Since then, Phantom has been my favorite musical, and i am determined to take a job in Entertainment as soon as i finish my BA. Because of Mr. Crawford i have been inspired, have seenthe Phantom at least three more times, and am currently an aspiring singer. I owe my love of the theatre to this extrordinary musical and to Mr. Crawford. I would love to see him cast as the role of the Phantom in Mr. Webbers movie and refuse to see it otherwise. With love for all things musical, Rene

Comments: The Broadway show asks in its recent ticket campaign, "Do you remember your first time?". Well, yes, and I'll never forget it. Michael Crawford sung with the voice of an "Angel (of Music)" and I was captivated forever. But it was not only his incredible voice that impressed me. Michael's acting brought something extraordinary to the role of Phantom, people could identify with the character's emotions. His pain, passion, anger, love, desire and sorrow were conveyed flawlessly. The audience understood that this was a tragic love story and not some cheap slasher flick. I have returned to see Phantom almost a dozen times since that first night, most recently in Sept 2003. Each time it has lost a little. The tears stopped coming, the passion was gone. The character of the Phantom has slowly turned into Freddy Kruger in a tux and it sickens me. For the movie, a permanent tribute to Mr. LLoyd-Weber's greatest creation, bring back the true meaning of the Phantom. Bring back the man who gave the Phantom that meaning and left us all crying like babies in the ailes. Bring back Michael Crawford. Just one more time let our spirits soar, and we'll live as we've never lived before.

Comments: I don't live in a big city such as New York where people can see plays regularly. I was introduced to this play by an on line acquaintance. I was so taken by the words to the songs and the story line I bought the CD, with the lead Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. OMG, it sent chills down my spine! I can't imagine anyone else in those roles. I have not seen the play but, if I were to see it I can't imagine anyone else but Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the lead roles. Plus, since I am unable to see the play I would like nothing better than to at least sit in a theater and imagine I'm there watching the one and only phantom, Michael Crawford. To not have Michael and Sarah would be like Gone With the Wind without Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh!

Comments: It is such a shame that the enchanting beauty of The Phantom of the Opera will not be seen or heard again through the film. It's depressing that instead of the spectacular Michael Crawford they chose someone who has barely sung in his life to takes HIS part. It's a shame that the captivating voice of Michael Crawford won't be able to touch people through the film as it does to me through the recording. If I had 1 wish right now it would be to have Michael Crawford (and Sarah Brightman for that matter) be cast in the film. :.(Such a shame.

Now that I know the story and musical, I wish I could see the Musical but I do not have the time or the money to see it. If the Phantom of the Opera became a movie I would be able to see it in the comfort of my own home. And Michael Crawford would be the absolute best choice for the role of the Phantom.

Comments: Look, ALW, i have a bone to pick with you. Why are you casting someone else to play Phantom? I donno, that is a stupid idea anyway. Look, just cast MC. It's not that hard.

Comments: I have been waiting for this movie a long time. It's a shame that ALW would consider using anyone other than Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman for the project.

This is the second time ALW has blown it on the project. It should have been done 15 years ago with the original actors.

For me Mr. Crawford is and always will be the Phantom of the Opera. And Sarah Brightman will always be Christine... She alone could make his song take flight.

Thank God we will always have those performances on CD.

Comments: To all those who post in this guestbook:

This guestbook, now signed by more than 8,400 people, was created for the purpose of recording support for the casting of Michael Crawford in the movie of "The Phantom of the Opera." It is not intended as a forum for any other discussion. If you do not support our position that the movie would have been best served by allowing for Michael Crawford's acclaimed portrayal to be captured on film, this is not the place for you to post and your message will be removed.

To the thousands of people who have posted over the years and to the hundreds who still post of their disappointment when they find that Michael Crawford will not be repeating his award-winning characterization in the film: Thank you for your support.

With appreciation to all those who worked with us, wrote letters, signed petitions and lobbied to see a brilliant performance captured on film,

The TMCPMC

Comments: just checked in to get the latest news on the up and coming movie. what a disappointment especially when you hear the cast say that they are cutting half the songs and adding more talking and over the top fight scenes, nice one - not! think i will give the film a miss, hope it flops which it will.

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber should not allow Hollywood to make decisions for him. Mr. Crawford & Ms. Brightman made Phantom an incredible success in London & then onto Broadway. London FIRST. I am sick of Hollywood not accepting the acting abilities of people from England. The BAFTAs award Americans but the academy does not reward Brits. Harry Potter was shut out of the academy awards. Mr. Lloyd Webber, take the lead from Ms. Rowling, don't allow Hollywood to push you around!! Mr. Crawford is the only Phantom there is or will ever be.

Comments: I didn't know until recently that a movie of Phantom based on the play was being planned. 'How exciting!' I thought, 'The music, the story, I can't wait! But... The actors? The voices?' Problem. Then I found this website. Michael Crawford in the leading role? Yes, a must! The thought of Michael Crawford playing the Phantom on screen was brilliant and beautiful, but then I learned the Hollywood big-wigs have other ideas for the role. Listen to the fans! I am so disappointed and saddened. Oh, what this movie could have been and might still be given a change of casting! Michael Crawford should play the Phantom, how could anyone think otherwise?

Comments: I first saw Phantom of the Opera around 1989(I think). At the time I made plans to go to New York and see the show, Michael Crawford was still on Broadway. By the time I got to New York, Mr. Crawford was then in Los Angeles doing the show. So, 6 months after I saw the show in New York I went to Los Angeles to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I can't see anyone else doing the role. It would be like recasting Yul Brynner as the King in the King and I.

Webber ruined Phantom like Rick Berman ruined Star Trek.

Comments: I have seen Phantom of the Opera twice now. Unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of seeing the original cast with Michael Crawford. I would love to see him star in this movie as long as Warner Bros. does a good job with the adaptation and it won't skew Michael Crawford's reputation in the role.

Comments: I have seen the play Phantom of the Opera. It was Great! The reason it was so Good was the actor Michael Crawford and actress Sarah Brightman. I am sure the movie companies agree; that is why a film version is being made of the very popular play. The movie version should definitely be cast with these same actor and actress. I would go see more than once.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the Phantom!!! There is no one who can sing the Music of the Night like him! I'll buy this as soon as it hits the store!

Note from TMCPMC:

Unfortunately you won't have the opportunity to buy the film on video or DVD with Michael Crawford because Andrew Lloyd Webber and the director, Joel Schumacher, have given the role to another actor. We are as disappointed as you and the thousands of others who have posted their support in this guestbook.

Comments: *shakes head in dismay* I haven't been quite up to the times as far as the Phantom movie, but hearing the news that the great MC won't be in it...*shakes head again* I heard rumors as far as J.T. and A.B., and prayed they were wrong. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy both of these actors, but it takes a certain "something" to be Erik. There are VERY FEW voices in this world that can entrance and hold your spirit; such is MC as Erik. I don't know too much about this Gerard fellow; I only hope he understands the massive responsibility that comes with taking on a role like this. I'm just afraid that this will all become some big-budget film with no "heart." :(

Comments: I believe that no other actor should even be considered for the role of the Phantom! How ludicrous to think that ALW would not whole-heartedly support the casting of Michael Crawford as the Phantom! The man has unbelievable talent and an incredible voice! He was magnificent as Erik and is the one TRUE Phantom! No one else even comes close to the believability that Crawford has shown! I'm a huge Michael Crawford fan and a huge Phantom fan, and I will not pay a dime to see a Phantom movie with anyone else cast as the Phantom!

Comments: Hey, i have read Gaston Leroux's book twice and I'm reading Phantom by Susan Kay right now! I was surfing the web one day to find out if Shrek 2 was going to come out (it is but that's not the point) and i was scrolling down and I saw the words The Phantom of the Opera, so i clicked on them. They are going to I guess open it in December 2004, but unfortunately Michael Crawford isn't in it :(!!!

Andrew Lloyd Webber is also helping with it. He said that movies ain't his thing, more stage productions, but i can't seem to remember who is playing Erik(Phantom)...........

Comments: I absolutly luv Micheal Crawford and frankly no one else can sing as well as he. Why not ask MC if he wants to be in it? He should have first priority with this thing. If MC can't do it, who can? Age has nothing to do with it. His voice is still good and he can still act. And no changing the music! So what if it was written so many years ago. It is still gorgeous and makes the rest of the play. Either do the original on film or skip the thing!!
