Comments: I can't imagine anyone else performing in this role. I saw him at the Majestic Theater, NYC in June 2001 and my sister and I were totally blown our of our balcony seats. There is no one else. The role was created specifically for michael. Bravo!

Comments: I love Michael Crawford I never was privleged to see him on stage but I listened to him every day sing his "Music of the night" to Christine, and I still think that Christine should have ended up with the phantom. There is know one else that could be the Phantom, Michael is the Phantom, but his co-star would have to Sarah Brightman as Cristine. I would love to see him in a movie it would be my dream come true.

Comments: i'd like to see the movie, but i won't if MICHAEL CRAWFORD isn't in it. he IS the phantom of the opera. people go to see it because of him, they just don't go because just anyone is singing. someone with a voice like that shouldn't be replaced for an actor who can't sing -- basically no one can sing compared to mr phantom - michael crawford. it a joke to think you can replace him. but who's going to be laughing when no one sees the movie because he's not in it?????

Comments: There are certain roles that seem to have been created for one performer. That is the case for the Phantom and Mr. Crawford. Try to imagine anyone other than Bogie as Mr Rick. Bogie defined Rick just as Mr Crawford has defined the Phantom. To change that is to change the entire character and story.

Comments: I have always loved the original london cast. I have went so far as to spend a lot of money for a playbill from the original cast for my collection. I agree that Michael should play the Phantom. In the novel, and the musical, the Phantom is almost ageless. Michael, at his age, could still pull off the part.

However, I disagree with those begging to put Sarah B. in as Christine. Christine is to be a young balet dancer that is an undiscovered singing talent. How could Sarah, at her age and mature body (trying to be nice) fill that role? I love her voice, and think she is very special as the first Christine. She just is not the person for the movie role.

With that said.... Michael, you're still the best. Everytime I see it on stage, I still compare them to you and they haven't matched you yet.

Comments: Hugh Jackman did a good work on stage with "Oklahoma!" and Banderas has been to me the best "Che", but the Phantom belongs to Michael Crawford. Too old, they say? Claude Rains did it at 53, and he was the only good thing on the Arthur Lubin version. Gerard Butler will be the most awful choice since Ronald Reagan was considered to play Rick Blaine in Casablanca. MICHAEL FOREVER.

Comments: I have seen several versions of Phantom on Broadway, and every attempt after Michael Crawford has fallen short. There has been no other man able to capture the haunting beauty of the role as well as Crawford was. He was absolutely brilliant, and is still a brilliant actor and singer.

Crawford is also more capable, deserving, and talented than any other actor to portray the Phantom. Even though, as ALW expressed, Crawford is "too old" for the role.

Although every version of Phantom is still breathtaking, no other performance has been as stunning as Crawford's.

Anyone that has seen (or even heard) Crawford's Phantom agrees that there is no other man that can even come close to his magic.

ALW has completely fallen into the "Teen Hollywood" by casting a young, "pretty boy" actor such as Gerard Butler. Butler has admitted he cannot sing, yet he is portraying the Angel of Music? How can this be?

Wouldn't ALW of all people consider VOICE talents over anything else for this role?

I believe he is only trying to get pre-teen little girls interested in this film. Why not cast N'Sync or the Backstreet Boys, for God's sake!?

Butler has only been in a couple of movies, and he is a completely awful actor. Not to mention that he is not mature enough, or experienced enough in the acting industry to even attempt taking on a role as perplexed as this.

I am very glad to see that Antonio Banderas was not cast. I have also found out that the very first man that ALW considered was Hugh Jackman (better known as Wolverine from the X-Men movie). What can ALW be thinking?

He is obviously only trying to please the youngest girls in the world right now, while completely ignoring the fact that millions of highly dedicated fans of Phantom will be lost. What about the people that have remained devoted fans longer than ALW's "girls" have been alive?

Although I do believe that most of the posts on this website are from young girls (ages 12-17), and I do not think that many of them truly understand or have witnessed the beauty and magic that Crawford presents as the Phantom. There are a few that have the maturity to understand, but there are more adults that would agree that there is only one Phantom. ALW should not be making this movie for young girls, but for true fans.

This is just my opinion though, and I know that millions of people will agree with me. In fact, there are millions more people that will agree with than disagree.

I (and everyone I know) will not pay to see the Phantom movie and support ALW's poor, illogical, "teen hollywood" decision to cast such an absurd person as the Angel of Music. There is only one man completely deserving of this role.

Crawford captured an existence in Erik that nobody else will ever be able to reach. Crawford is the only Phantom.

Comments: I have never seen the Phantom of the Opera, but what I have heard from the play: Soundtracks. I can't wait to see it in movie form. Crawford is the only one that can make the Phantom who he really is. I say if Crawford isnt the phantom in the movie, then it wont be the phantom of the opera.

Comments: I do agree that Micheal Crawford is THE ONE AND ONLY Angel of Music, but if we were forced to choose a different one (I.e. WB are so thick they don't yeild till Micheal's dead. AAARRGH!) you've gotta be kidding about Antonio Bandares. Have these peopkle got one brain cell between them?! (I know i spelt his name wrong but who cares?) I think that if we never got to have Micheal Crawford then there wouldn't be a film. It would be a bigger box office flop than Cleopatra was! Who agrees with me people? You've gotta answer such good sense, we all feel the same on this one!

Comments: HI there, I don't entirely agree with you guys about Michael Crawford being the ONLY Phantom. Have you guys ever seen Phantom of the Opera Without him? It's still good. Gerald Butler could still be good. I would really like a reply to this because I'm very curious about why you guys think he is the only person to play the Phantom. I'm sure ALW asked him. How are you so sure he even wants to be in it?

YOU have a marvoulous site and I was with you alll the way about Antonio Banderas!!! I love how it's updated sooo much I I come back often!

Comments: What a horrible sin to cast an inferior, unknown, untalented, "pretty-boy" actor as the leading role of the most acclaimed show of all time.

I do not know anybody that will support (or even pay to view!) a Phantom movie that lacks the man born to play the lead.

This movie will undoubtedly be a complete failure at the box office, because all of the TRUE Phantom fans have been betrayed.

Comments: On www.imdb.com it states that Gerard Butler will be potraying Eric. I have not seen much of Butler, but can say that he was absolutely AWFUL in Dracula 2000 (although everything about that movie was awful).

At least Antonio Banderas has been taken out of consideration. Banderas is nothing of a Phantom.

I agree with this site and the people representing their opinions! Michael Crawford should most definately be the Phantom. There is no other person more suitable, deserving, or appropriate for the role.

Incidentally, I believe an "older" Phantom might appear quite appealing to the young Christine of the Operahouse. I think that would be an acceptable age difference for this film.

POWER TO MICHAEL CRAWFORD!

Comments: You know what makes me sick? You know what makes me so angry and depressed that I want to eat Velveeta right out of the box? ewww. (I got the idea for this entry when I was dove hunting when no birds were flying around) It is the way that Andrew Loyd Webber treats his fans. I wouldn't treat a dog the way he treated us! He,(scream), is going to put Gereld Butler as Erik! I nearly ripped out my hair when I found that out! Tears were, literly, spilling out of my eyes when I read how my trust was in someone who went behind our backs. Are we the only ones who ever felt this way? MICHAEL CRAWFORD FOR PHANTOM!!!!!!!!!!! MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE PHANTOM!!!!! ERIK DESERVES TO BE TREATED BETTER THAN WHAT HE HAS!!!!!!!!!! Ok, I am better now. Had to get that out. Calm down, yeah right! Look Andy, if you do not put Michael Crawford as Phantom, you will loose a lot of fans and money. The choice is yours, but we watch it! We read Time magizene to find out anything (oh and by the way, I hate Time magizene, it has only war in it but I scan it for MC stuff) Hey, Andy, have u asked MC if he would like to star in it? If he does, let him!! If not, ok, don't. C YA!!! Look down, Andy, he's standing in a pit. Give way, no rules are laid!!(from les mis)

Comments: I just read the recent news about who they cast as Erik/Phantom. That's just sickening!! There will always be only ONE Phantom, and that dear friends is Mr. Michael Crawford! Although I loved Gerard Butler in Dracula 2000, and Reign of Fire, I don't think he has the PASSION or singing talent to follow in MC's footsteps. I've been a huge fan of POTO my entire life, and MC's singing is simply amazing! I have to listen to Music of the Night every night just so I can go to sleep. No one can ever DREAM of topping that. One question I have fellow PHANS, is what kind of crack is ALW smoking??

Comments: Well, I might have been tempted to see POTO - the movie, by some of the casting. (I repeat...MIGHT have been...) I do like Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson, and the Powers That Be were bright enough to hire an actual opera singer to play Christine (although that's no guarantee of quality; I'm not familiar with her voice, but I've heard some highly successful opera singers whose voices were so unsuitable to a given part that they made me say "eeeewwwww...").

But ALW et al were foolish and headstrong enough to go ahead and cast that Scottish Boy... whatzizname... as the Phantom. THAT cuts it! Too bad for them that Phans of Michael Crawford -- the REAL Phantom -- are every bit as headstrong as they! And NOT foolish enough to spend our money on something we emphatically do not want. So if the film ever gets broadcast on TV where I can view it for nothing, I MIGHT spend some time on it, but not one penny of cash. Never.

ALW's ego simply has to be brought to heel. He CANNOT make a musical star of just ANYONE, although that's what he probably thinks he did with Michael Crawford. After all, for years MC was known chiefly as a comic actor who did his own stunts, and no one remembered that he had been a singer when he was a boy. Then Webber cast him as the Phantom, and everyone was amazed. (Ooo, brilliant, Webber, brilliant!...) But MC always WAS a singer. This new dude Webber's got playing the Phantom was NEVER a singer. You can uncover a hidden treasure, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Comments: How shocking that they are even considering someone else to play this role. As Yul Brynner was always The King of Siam in "The King and I" (Stage and Movie) so too should Michael Crawford always be the one true Phantom of The Opera.
