Comments: Response to posting on June 3, 2003: The comments include: "I have read Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera more times than I've seen the musical. I've seen all the movies, even the foreign ones. None of them pay their dues to the book like the 1925 silent film and the musical. The newest movie is in production and is set to come out in 2004. I will be happy with the movie if they get one fact straight. The phantom's face was not scarred by an accident such as acid thrown at him. It is actually a birth defect called elephantitis, think the elephant man."

I agree with the person who posted these comments for the most part. I, too, have read the original Gaston Leroux novel and LOVED it, and the 1925 movie starring Lon Chaney is certainly the screen version that has come closest to the novel (with the exception of the movie's atrocious ending). Having seen the ALW musical 4 times, I think that it captures the spirit of the novel like no other version-- stage or screen.

Referring to the comments in the aforementioned quote, it is true that Erik's face was not scarred by acid but he did not have "elephantitis" (sic-- the disease is actually ELEPHANTIASIS). Leroux's description of the Phantom (no nose, sunken eyes, protruding cheek bones, parchement-like skin-- i.e., a rotting corpse)does not match the condition of elephantiasis, which is a disorder of the lymphatic system that causes enormous swelling of the affected areas, usually the limbs and torso and genitals, and a thickening of the skin. In addition, elephantiasis is not a birth defect; it is the result of a blockage of the lymphatic vessels, (e.g., recurrent bacterial infections in the lymphatic system). The Phantom would have had some type combination of craniofacial deformities (such as enophthalmos/ dystopia, nasal aplasia, and facial cleft) in addition to other afflictions. Also, the Elephant Man had Proteus Syndrome, not elephantiasis or neurofibromatosis.

A final thought: MICHAEL CRAWFORD SHOULD PLAY THE PHANTOM IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF ALW'S THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, but I will still give it a chance even if he does not.

Comments: when they brought miss saigon to broadway, some union (or something) didnt want jonathan pryce as the lead cos he wasnt asian. however, cameron macintosh stood by him and refused to use another actor. eventually it got to america with jonathan and the show was a huge success, despite his race. the point is if you stick to your guns and use the original star your show will get a better response, and it doesnt matter about age, race or how big a name you are. the same thing applies here. thanks for listening and btw HAPPY BASTILLE DAY!!!!!!

Comments: I have been an adament Phantom fan for yrs. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are the original cast and "what a pair!" There have been many movies and none of them have been a success. Many people have been looking forward and anxiously awaiting this masterpiece to come to life. It will be a success, but only if WB listens and responds to the public. I will NOT even give it a chance if it does not include Michael; he has been the very essence and inspiration to phantom lovers all over the world.

In all five productions I have seen no one, and I mean NO ONE that captures the tears, the heartache, the jealousy and rage like the original cast. You know true art when you are touched in many ways, and true Phantom fans will have none other than Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman.

Comments: how the bloody hell can u have a phantom movie without the star! the original soundtrack is michael and sarah. thats what we know and love so why deviate from this when all the fans will boycott the film. we all saw what a hash antonio banderas made of the phantom role when he sang it on andrews 50th birthday. he was so mismatched to sarahs voice bless him lol

Comments: When I first heard of the Phantom of the Opera I was 8 years old (I'm 13 now) and my older sister had the soundtrack to it, (and of course Michael Crawford was the Phantom on the sound track) and I just fell in love with it. When my sister was moving out I stole the soundtrack, and now i listen to it every day! And yes I think Michael Crawford should play the Phantom in the movie(even though he is at least 60 years old) he has the voice and he is a wonderful actor. Although I have never heard anyone else play the Phantom besides Michael, I would say no one should play the Phantom but Michael crawford!!

Comments: To me Mr. Crawford is the real Angel of Music. I love his voice. No one even comes close to him. I most definately know that Mr. Crawford is the best to play Erik. He can sing. He can act. He knows how to be the Phantom. If WB hires someone else then they will lose money. The Phantom of the Opera is the most famous musical ever, and just about every phan knows that Mr. Crawford is the original Phantom. It will make a lot of people very upset if he isn't the Phantom.

Comments: Michael Crawford is an outstanding man who for many years expressed his emotions through the Phantom. He moved many people with the powerful words that he spoke and sang. When i had first heard his touching most outstanding voice it touched me and I wanted to see the play right away. And for the upcoming movie i am dissapointed. i really do hope that they do not cut parts out of it like they have done for other movies. The Phantom Of the Opera is an awesome play, and Micheal Crawford should be the only Phantom.

-Brian

Comments: Yes I agree -only MC can play the role!Only he has the ability. Unless it's him it will fail.

Someone tell me why they've ignored him! To cast anyone else is just plain wrong, unless they care more about money than integrity. Perhaps they think we phans will go anyway. I'm telling you, I for one am going to boycott. Doesn't matter how good the reviews are.

This Gerard Butler - who is he anyway? Won't be as good as MC that's for sure. And so to conclude: Terrific site - well done! Shame it's all in vain....

Comments: ;-) Love the site!! Me and my sister were bored so we looked up our favorite play in the world and found this. Didn't know there was a movie coming out this soon, but HOW in the world can they shoot THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA without THE PHANTOM?!? PLEEEEASE, Michael, you have to be the Phantom!! If you're not the Phantom and some other Hollywood-wanna-be is, it just won't be worth watching!!

Comments: I have seen Phantom of the Opera in 3 different venues and absolutely NONE of them compare with the production at the Ahmanson Theater starring Michael Crawford.

Michael Crawfords range and depth of emotion simply blows the "pretenders" away, there is NO contest whatsoever. Phantom without Crawford is not THE PHANTOM.

The movie WITHOUT Crawford will never see me!!!!

Comments: Phans, I am deeply saddened by Joel Schumacher choice for the Phantom. This has been a cause worth fighting for. May Michael Crawford prevail! Good luck to Joel Schumacher to try to come up with even a pinch of the magic, wonder, and mystery that Michael Crawford gave the Phantom. Mr. Schumacher, this could have been something great, just don't throw away 100 million dollars. Keep fighting Phans!

Comments: Michael Crawford is the only man good enough to play the role. His voice is perfect and if it is cast otherwise it'll be a cry and shame. It should also be performed in the original (and by that I mean London) production. And an even better thing would be to have Sarah Brightman in the role of Christine Dia. I was raised with this musical (literally), don't ruin it!

Comments: My house is full of young people on a daily basis. I can honestly say that none of them have any interest in seeing this proposed version of "Phantom of the Opera".

I have friends all over the country in my age bracket (35-55) who loved Michael Crawford in the Broadway/LA show and the Original Cast Album. I can honestly say they also have no interest in seeing this movie without Michael Crawford.

It seems pretty certain that the "Batman" fans will not come.

So, if TPTB have not interested the kids, have royally alienated true fans of the show and are hated by the genre people, just who do they expect to watch the bloody thing? The ushers? Well, they have to, I guess, but they get in for free!

"TPTB" are taking a modern classic and a perfect performance and sweeping it under the "rug", thinking the general public will be too stupid to notice the difference.

But "TPTB" will be the ones choking on dust... From when their audience runs in another direction.

Back to my OCR... Sing to me Michael! :) Audrey

Comments: If the movie flops, here are a few ways to recover tromendously:

1. Market that hidden video of the original cast production with Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton.

2. Before it's too late and Michael Crawford is too old, consider a complete filmed stage version with Michael Crawford as The Phantom, Lisa Vroman or Barbara Bonny as Christine, and Michael Ball as Raoul.

Comments: I first saw The Phantom of the Opera when I was 16 years old and have been an avid fan since. That was over 15 years ago and I'm still going strog thanks to the beautiful voice of Michael Crawford who sings the opera with such feeling from his soul that makes you feel as though you are apart of the opera. I hope to see Michael as the star and feel the movie would other wise bomb. It's not worth seeing if Michael isn't involved.

Comments: When I first heard about the "young cast" for Phantom of the Opera, I was slightly impressed. Perhaps they will be targeting a young audience. Perhaps seeing this movie will turn younger people on to the beauty that is the story of "Phantom".

Then, I saw _Queen of the Damned_ on TV.

Same good story.. same company producing the movie.. same idea: Young actors, hard rock, appeal to younger audience = watered down MTV "shock rock" _The Lost Boys_ wannabe.

I would have hoped Warner Bros. would have learned from the mistake that was made with Queen of the Damned and would have done Phantom the right way.

I suppose we'll have to see.

Comments: If ALW and JS insist on believing that a younger actor than the actor whose name is synonymous with " The Phantom of the Opera " to millions of people would be more popular as the Phantom, I have to wonder, " Is the name 'Klinton Spilsbury' familiar to them?" I'll bet not, but I'll bet they know the name 'Clayton Moore'.

Comments: My sister and I grew up listening to Michael Crawford as the phantom. no one else i have seen or heard as the phantom can compare with his performance. Even just listnening to his performance you can feel him put his heart and soul into it. all i can say, from what i've heard they're doing to it, is that this movie will BOMB. Who do they think is going to see this movie, High school kids who've probably never even heard of POTO let alone the that it was a musical. No the Phans of the musical who have heard, seen, and fallen in love with this tragic love story of a disfigured man and the young singer he falls in love with. I can only wish them luck(they are SOOOOO going to need it).

Comments: i just want o saythat i too will be staying home whenthis movie comes out. I am outraged that they would change such a beautiful and entrancing story. and michel crawford not having the part is an insult indeed. I remember when the play came out I was seven and if i remember correctly sarqah brightman was in hert hirtys playing a so called yuoung christine and micheal as the aver so brilliiant part of the phantom and did anyone care how old they were? absolutley not because the played the parts so beutifully what about miss brighman was she even considered for the part of chrisitne since she herself brought a life and soul into that character. noone could sing it like them. and reading from what has been said about us poto fans to stay home-well I doublt anyone will be seeing that movie. they have meddled with the most devoted of people and have now lost that which the play has eranedover the years. I hope they think it is worth it to lose thousands or perhaps millions of fans of the original story and cast. this new stuff, I beleive, is for only those who have not seeen it, they just trying to get a younger crowd although it seeems event the young crowd does not like this Idea anymore than adults do. maybe with all these letters they wil change their minds.

Comments: How daft can Warner Bros. get? Can the wee lassies not think? Micheal Crawford is the one true Phantom. I've seen a few other performances of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, but none were like the original. Micheal is the best Laddie for the part. May the faux Phantom bust his bippy! P.S. I liked the picture with the fighting Scots and the Phantom against Warner Bros.
