Comments: No one can do the Phantom but Michael Crawford. I will not waste my money on a movie with someone else trying to do this role. This goes for several of my friends who are Crawford fans!!

Comments: I was very depressed by the announcement of the cast, not because I wasn't aware they could make the big mistake of not casting Michael (mistake that alone will probably and wishfully ruin the entire movie), but because as long as I suspected a bad casting, I wouldn't have aspected the worst. Infact, according to me this is the worst casting they could ever have made. The ages between The Phantom, Christine and Raoul are unbearable to me and this only reason makes me feel unconfortable. I will never go and see this movie and tell to all people I know to do the same. This is not because I don't wanna give a chance to ALW, but because if the movie is going to be done this immoral way he doesn't merit it. Finally this movie is going very far from all that we know connected to POTO (far too many changes for my tastes) this is not POTO Movie I wanted so I won't waste my money for it. If the movie will ever be realised (who knows? Maybe Phantom will save us from it to be filmed), when the movie will be finished, I will simply take my dear OCR with me and listen to it, listen to THE ONLY PHANTOM: MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!

Comments: I've been lucky enough to see Michael Crawford sing, but never as Phantom. To cast some "Hollywood" type would be a tragedy in the highest degree.

Comments: I have been following the Phantom Movie campaign for many years. Even though I knew it would probably end this way, the latest news of the casting of POTO movie has filled me with great sadness. Michael Crawford IS and ALWAYS will be the Phantom of the Opera. There is no-one else. The music of the night for the Phantom is truly over now:(:( However, MICHAEL CRAWFORD WILL LIVE ON!!

Comments: Michael Crawford is the ONE and the ONLY man for this part--- if any other person were chosen- it would completely ruin the movie.

Comments: I want to make some corrections to the "Phantom Movie News" found at The Really Useful Group's website:

PHANTOM MOVIE NEWS!!! NEW FACES LEAD THE CAST OF ‘THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 16-year-old Emmy Rossum joins Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson in director Joel Schumacher s big screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera Correction No. 1: That should have been Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball or Anthony Warlow, and Michael Crawford!

London, June 13th 2003: Really Useful Films today announced the principal cast of the highly anticipated feature film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to be directed by Joel Schumacher. Principal photography will begin on the 15th September 2003 at Pinewood Studios in the UK. An exciting trio of fresh young talent, from both sides of the Atlantic, will fill the starring roles. After an exhaustive search, Emmy Rossum, a 16-year-old New Yorker, has been chosen by Lloyd Webber for the star-making role of Christine. Exaustive search? You could have saved yourself a lot of tiresome searching and just picked Sarah Brightman.

Emmy has been with the Metropolitan Opera in New York since the age of 7 and is already an acclaimed opera singer, having performed with such stars as Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Emmy’s previous roles include ‘The Audrey Hepburn Story’ for television, ‘Songcatcher’ and ‘An American Rhapsody’. She can currently be seen in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Mystic River’, recently in competition at Cannes 2003. Gerard Butler, the 33-year old Scottish TV, stage and film actor, has won the coveted role of the Phantom. He began his career on the stage, most notably playing Ewan McGregor’s character, Renton, in the stage adaptation of ‘Trainspotting’. His movie debut was alongside Billy Connolly in ‘Mrs. Brown,’ followed by roles in ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, ‘Dracula 2000’ and ‘Reign of Fire’. He will soon be seen in ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’ and Richard Donner’s ‘Timeline’. Next correction: That should have been Michael Crawford who was in the movie "Hello Dolly," the TV series "Ave M," the original Phantom in the stage production of "The Phantom of the Opera," and was in the Broadway musical "Dance of the Vampire."

Patrick Wilson, will star as Raoul, Christine’s childhood sweetheart. The 29-year-old actor will soon be seen in the upcoming ‘Angels in America’ and ‘The Alamo’, alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid. Michael Ball or Anthony Warlow would have been better choices for Raoul because they can act and sing and their ages are very close to Sarah Brightman's.

Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “From the beginning Joel and I always wanted a young and relatively unknown cast. Given his track record for discovering stars such as Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland and Colin Farrell, who am I to argue with him?” Excuse me?! That is not what Andrew Lloyd Webber said from the beginning. What he did say was that Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, the integrity of the originals will be preserved.

Odyssey Entertainment is handling international sales, Warner Bros. will distribute the film in North America and Entertainment Film Distributors in the UK. The film is being financed with the assistance of Scion Films. Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill from Odyssey Entertainment Ltd. said, “There has been a lot of speculation about the casting of the movie and we’re thrilled with the talent involved.” Many fans are so closed-minded that they aren't going to even give a few bucks just to rent the movie. At least I'll rent the movie. If the score for today's stage productions is used and the portrayals are obviously inspired by the originals, then I'll even buy the DVD. However, if neither of the above are put into consideration, then I will not buy the DVD and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher will not get the money they might get from me.

Loosely based on the 1910 novel ‘Le Fantome de L’Opera’ by Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is the classic and highly emotive story of the love triangle between Christine (Emmy Rossum), a beautiful young opera singer, Raoul (Patrick Wilson) her childhood sweetheart, and the Phantom (Gerard Butler) – a tormented and horribly disfigured musical genius. After a succession of inexplicable accidents at the Opera Populaire, the reigning diva La Carlotta quits, giving the new theatre managers no option but to turn to the young Christine in the lead role – an opportunity she has always craved. Christine dazzles all of Paris with her performance, including Raoul the Vicompte de Chagny, whom she has not seen since childhood. But she has another admirer. The mysterious Phantom lurking unseen in the shadows, is also fast falling in love with her. Deep in his subterranean lair beneath the opera house the Phantom seduces her with his exquisite music but no sooner has she fallen for him that she discovers his terrible secret. She flees into the welcoming arms of Raoul and watched by the Phantom they escape to the rooftops of the Opera House. As they exchange tender words of love The Phantom’s fury at her betrayal becomes murderous. He hatches a plot to win her back and in a dramatic and tense climax Christine is forced to choose between Raoul and the Phantom – her Angel of Music. ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ stage musical, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, is the largest grossing stage or screen production in the world with a box-office of more than $3.2 billion. It has played in over 100 cities in 17 countries around the world, reaching an estimated audience of 70 million people. That's right. Please don't damage the reputation of such a wonderful stage musical. Let the world-wide audience get a good idea of what they would expect to see on stage. For people who have never seen the show live, if you give them a bad impression, they might not go to see it and that may negatively interfere with the very large income Andrew Lloyd Webber is getting from just the stage version of "The Phantom of the opera" alone!

Joel Schumacher has directed a string of box office successes including Phone Booth (2002), Batman & Robin (1997), A Time to Kill (1996), Batman Forever (1995), The Client (1994), Flatliners (1990) and St Elmo’s Fire (1985). Schumacher’s most recent film -Veronica Guerin – will be released this year.

Comments: I heard recently from a friend the rumor about Antonio Banderas and I flipped out. So I came online to look for the truth of the matter. All I can say is that Michael Crawford is the Phantom and anyone else who thinks otherwise is crazy. If Warner Bros. does decide to go with another actor they will be making the worst financial decision possible (and that is probably the line of reasoning that will influence the big executives the most.)

Michael Crawford made the musical a success because he became the character Gaston Lereaux wrote. A man that, however outwardly horrible, is still inwardly a man with true feelings and who wants only what every other human being wants - someone to love and love them in return.

Comments: The whole idea of person other than MIcheal Crawford playing as the Phantom is outrageous! Especially if they sing to bring down the chandelier, as the slave of fashion they intend does. If this website's demands are not met, a disaster beyond their imagination will occur... NO ONE WILL LIKE IT!!!! They should learn to assign a rather minor role to those who cannot act!

Comments: I have never seen Phantom of the Opera but I have the soundtrack, and I fell inlove with Michael Crawfords voice and I can tell just by hearing him sing that no one can take a song and bring it to life the way he does though I never saw the Phantom I felt like I had, I want to see it but I'm afraid seeing someone else play the Phantom will ruin the image of the opera that I have in my head. Just recently I played the soundtrack in my car and it was the first time my 8 year old son heard it and the first thing he said was "this man sings good". There are'nt alot of 8 year old who like opera and my son just by hearing the soundtrack wants to see it. I would love to take him to see it on screen and I would love to see it for the first time starring Michael Crawford. I thought I missed my chance of seeing the Phantom with Michael Crawford but if Warner Brothers makes a movie and casts him, my wish would come true.

Comments: I just found out that a film is being made. How could anyone even consider casting anyone else other than Michael Crawford as the Phantom? His voice is one of a kind. He IS THE PHANTOM!!! If they don't use him in this film I am sure that generations of music and film lovers will lose out and there will be many regrets!

Comments: I first saw "phantom" in January 2003, the star of the show was Brad little. Well, not to offend Brad, but his preformance was not everything I had expected the Phantom's character to be. Non-the-Less the story (I had read the book long ago) was still a favorite of mine so I bought the soundtrack before leaving. On the soundtrack was the voice of Michael Crawford, although I obviously couldn't see him acting as I listened to the CD, His voice touched me in a way that I had expected the show I had just seen to. After that I found clips of his preformances on the internet and have decided that his voice and dedication to the character is nothing short of perfect, Warner Bros. would have to be crazy to choose anyone else over this magnificent man.

Comments: my husband was the first to introduce me to michael crawford's music from phantom of the opera. My first time seeing him act was in Hello Dolly. I think that no one else can play phantom better than michael crawford. No one else has ever moved me in their singing and acting as michael has. My husband and I have been married only 5 years but michael makes us fall in love again.

Comments: I have seen Phantom of the Opera at least 6 times in Tampa. The performances were fantastic but they all missed one thing ... MICHAEL CRAWFORD! I have prayed and waited for the movie all these years, mainly to finally see Mr. Crawford playing HIS ROLE!! There is no way that this movie could be done properly if Michael was not there behind his Mask! I would not let myself be cheated and watch a movie version of the play that Mr. Crawford made famous. He is the Phantom and without him there will never be any reason to waste one's time and money. People all over the world will be faithful and listen to their Music of the Night on their old CD's and not bother throwing their money away on a farce. WB, if you want to collect armfuls of OSCARS then open your eyes and see your TRUE Phantom hold his overdue statue!!

Comments: I would definitely love to see a Phantom of the Opera movie starring Michael Crawford. It would give a chance for people (like me) who have never ever seen the broadway show. And who dream of one day actually seeing the London cast (even if it is in movie form). :) I hope it actually happens someday. I would definitely go to the movies to see it, and buy the dvd when it comes out. :)

Comments: What a travesty it will be to not have Michael Crawford in the lead. Joel Schumacher says Gerard Butler is going to be a "sexy Phantom"? HellO?! Isn't that kind of an oxymoron? The Phantom is supposed to be grotesque, granted he is supposed to be suave somewhat too, but come on. But I guess if the higher ups don't have their heads on straight as far as casting goes, hopefully the integrity of the original stage show will still be maintained somewhat and that Schumacher won't turn it into a flashy circus like he did with the two Batman movies. Mike Crawford is the only Phantom regardless what anyone else may say.

Comments: I don't understand why it is so difficult to understand the crucial role of Michael Crawford as Phantom. Number One: In the beginning the carachter was just in the book and its spirit was already incredible. Erik was already deep in your heart after reading Leroux's novel. Imagine to see him at once before your eyes. Alive!! Michael Crawford was not only the FIRST to perform him, and we must underline it, because many are forgetting it, (Mr.Webber is the worst example) but he was also the one to really meld, in an amazing way, its soul with Phantom. He really IS Erik/Phantom.Therefore his acting through the scenes, his way of singing through the musical made the rules to be followed by all the others good/bad (as you like) Phantoms. You can't deny they were all inspired by Michael Crawford performance. Number Two: This movie (ok friends we are all able to understand what is a movie) is about ALW musical called "The Phantom Of The Opera". So there must be a Phantom (who is not a boy), an Opera (yes, it's about the Opera too), a young girl (not a minor) and a young suitor. If you eliminate one of these elements you get something, of course, but certainly not "The Phantom Of The Opera". Finally, I will give this last advertisement to Mr Webber, Mr. Schumaker and similar: Before taking any definitive decision, before expressing your opinion about POTO and Michael Crawford, get a copy of the Original Cast Soundtrack listened to all of it, THINK and THEN open your mouth... Mr Crawford deserves the lead role. Michael Crawford IS Phantom and vice versa. And You know it!

Comments: Does it matter who plays the part of the phantom? Actually it does. But nothing in the living can tell us who the right person to play the part is. What has to be remembered is the phantom was real. He was flesh and blood. The ghost of the phantom will haunt the directors if he believes they have done him wrong. I should know. He haunts me because he is the Angel of Music.

Comments: Well, I can't say I'm surprised by the casting (the sewer rats had already made their choices well before the press releases!) but I am terribly hurt and disappointed that Michael wasn't even considered for the Lead. Maybe it's just as well because I have a feeling the movie won't even remotely resemble the Play and I don't think Michael would want to be associated with a Phantom that "may" be portrayed like a "Jack the Ripper". I know this may sound like an absurd idea but I wonder if they might consider casting Michael in a cameo role as Christine's father?

Comments: When I was only seven, I dreamed of seeing MC on strage as the Phantom because I would listen to the cd every day. I was crazy about him.Now I'm 14 and i've seen the play twice. I was shocked. It was the best thing i've ever seen. The only thing I regret was not seeing MC on the cast. It was my dream to see him as Phantom. Not just listen to his voice threw speakers. And know that that there's a movie coming out, I could have my dreams come true. So please WB,don't take away my dreams. We all know that there is no one that can play this part better than MC.

Comments: Growing up Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera was always my favorite musical. I've seen it so many times I've stopped counting. I've been in it numerous times. When I was young I took lessons in everything from playing the organ to singing opera to dancing just so I could one day be in the Phantom of the opera. My work has payed off. I have read Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera more times than I've seen the musical. I've seen all the movies, even the foreign ones. None of them pay their dues to the book like the 1925 silent film and the musical. The newest movie is in production and is set to come out in 2004. I will be happy with the movie if they get one fact straight. The phantom's face was not scarred by an accident such as acid thrown at him. It is actually a birth defect called elephantitis, think the elephant man.

Comments: I want to see "Phantom of the Opera" I have never seen it!!! ALl the times I have wanted to see it when it came to Dallas I was too busy. I hear it could of been put on video and it would of not caused me all this stress. I wonder what Mr. Webber is doing. I hope he is doing something productive. So far I am reading old news like back in 1990 and 1992 and I want to see some action taken place...It is the year 2003 why isn't there a PHantom out on video yet??

Comments: First of all I don't have a clue why you think that Antonio Banderas should play the phantom.I was reading a letter that is posted and was written by an 11 year-old,even he knows what he is talking about,it is pretty bad when a child gets online and makes more sense the the adults at Warner Bros.C'mon, don't you see even a child understands that Michael Crawford is far more talentad than Antonio Banderas, besides Antonio Banderas can't even sing and if he could (which he can't)how could a spanish guy get the part as a french phantom?C'mon!Second of all,how much fan-mail does Antonio Banderas get...prabably none because everybody is to busy writeing to those nutheads at Warner Brothers to give MC the part.If practicly everybody wants MC who is going to go see AB.If AB is going to do anything he is going to humiliate himself and reuin his career if he gets the part.So if you want to reuin this perfictly good musical for the sake of Antonio Banderas that is your bussiness...but like the 11 year-old said if you are smart you will pick Michael Crawford. Sincerely, Concerned MC Fan

Comments: Michael Crawford is synonymous with the Phantom. Talk about using someone else is ludicrous. Who is Gerard Butler? How can Antonio Banderas ever hope to sing as the Phantom? No true fan of opera will go to such a travesty as what is being planned at the moment. And, why would anyone else want to go to this movie if not to get the feeling of the stage opera?

Comments: I was never able to see Michael Crawford play The Phantom on stage because of my age (I'm in highschool) but there's a level of devotion to him as I have sooo many audio versions of him singing the role. The is no other actor that can play this part with the same intensity and character that Crawford can. He must be casted in the part!

Comments: I saw the Phantom of the opera musical in Oct in Nashville and I was left speechless!

I only wish Michael Crawford had been in the cast! He has an amazing voice and is so talented. Only Michael CAN be the Phantom. He was born for the roll and nobody else could do as well of a preformance.
