Comments: If The Phantom is played by anyone other than the real thing (Michael Crawford of course)I know there will be many many people skipping it in the theatres and either not seeing it at all, or seeing it a couple years later when we get it from the dollar rental store. I may rent a non MC Phantom someday but I would never pay theater prices and I sure won't ever buy it. As far as The Phantom goes, if you aren't going to put Michael Crawford in the movie then don't bother with the movie at all. Too many good stage musicals have been destroyed by Hollywood already. Either do Phantom right (with Michael Crawford) or don't do it at all is my vote.

Comments: I am quite proud to say that I am a very huge fan of both The Phantom of the Opera and Michael Crawford. If/when the movie comes out I will refuse to see it if they do not have Michael Crawford as The Phantom!! He was the one who did the role when I first saw the musical and he is a large part of why I am such a huge fan of it. I am glad that there are others who feel the same way as me!

Comments: I have been a fan of Phantom for many years. The first time I heard it was the recording with Michael Crawford as Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine. I have seen the play live with other actors and it loses something. Please get Mr. Crawford to play Phantom.

Sincerely, Martha

Comments: I don't know where to start,,the first time i ever herad of phantom was when my mom played the cd,,,I loved it and when it finally came to Columbus,Ohio, the one and only time, I finally got to see it and i was mesmerized,I hated for it to end. When my boys found out that I went without them they were very upset,,they are teenagers and they wanted to go, so now we are waiting for it to come back. I would go see it as many times as it were to come here. Best show I have ever seen. Great job,,and if they make a movie we would like to see the original, Michael Crawford. Kim Rizer

Comments: It should be obvious that Michael Crawford should play Phantom. No one else can do it as he does! His voice, his acting, his emotions. He is the only one who has the talent to let people see, hear and FEEL that he IS the person he plays that time. And he is the ONLY one who can let people hear, see and feel what the Phantom hears, sees and feels. So have him play the role in the upcoming movie! Okay, so he's 61 years old at the moment. So what!!! He looks a lot younger and he can sing as no one else can!!! And maybe I can also let you know that for Christine you best pick Els Bongers (she is Dutch, but when I saw her playing C, MY GOD!!! When she even thinks she hears the Phantom, panic gets in her eyes. And her voice!!!! And for Raoul: Pick Simon Bowman! I've seen him 3 times in this role, and he is soooooo very good! He played out Grant Norman (who was Phantom at that time)! He IS Raoul!!!). I've seen Phantom 26 times now, spread over 3 countries, but the actors above are the best you can get. And Michael........ he beats everyone!!!!!!!!!!! Love, Ingrid

Comments: Michael Crawford is one of the most exceptional singers of the current generation. His voice commands power, compassion, strength, and many other words which are simply indescribable. When I first heard Michael's voice, I was merely 11. His level of achievement gave me the strength to begin my own vocal career, which began shortly after. Since then, I've been studying opera off and on for almost 12 years. If it wasn't for Michael's exceptional voice, compassionate heart, motivation, etc...then I, as well as others, would surely be missing a large part of themselves bc ONLY Michael can bring out with perfection the qualities of the Phantom. AS the saying goes, "Nothing compares to the first time around".

Comments: Not only should Michael Crawford play the Phantom, but Sarah Brightman should play Christine and Michael Ball should play Raoul. Also, "The Phantom of the Opera" for the most part is sung through by the entire company. Think about it ... you have The Phantom, Christine, Raoul, Meg, Giri, Carlotta, Piangi, Andre, Firmin, the Chorus, the Firemen, the Auctioneer, and the porter. It will not be possible to get a bunch of vocally untrained movie stars to sing. Also, in this generation, when you mention "The Phantom of the Opera," the average people will think of the famous stage show as opposed to the old classic novel and/or the two old films (including the silent film and the old black and white motion picture). Therefore, those DVDs would sell at enormous speeds and quantities if The Really Useful Groop films "The Phantom of the Opera" in the same manner as "Cats" was filmed because Hollywood will not ba factor in propper casting and for the first time, a 100% complete version of "The Phantom of the Opera" with the latest version of the score, song lyrics, and spoken dialogs along with "The Phantom of the Opera's" official dream cast will be available on DVD!

Comments: Comeon! MC has to be Erik. I've been a fan for a long time now and have won over some of the worst skeptics I know into supporting MC. My friends, mostly fans only as of this year, all threaten to boycott the movie if MC does not star. I agree. So do the people I know that refuse to admit they like POTO, and they certainly won't watch it if any of the many rumored actors star. Sure I'm sickeningly obsessed with Phantom but hey, that's what movie rentals seven years later can help me with if I must see the new movie and it doesn't have MC. One nice girl I know refuses to even listen to any phantom other than MC. As far as the movie is concerned, even a Banderas fan should support casting MC because Banderas will not be right for this role and it would make him look really bad if the movie was a flop. There is no reason not to cast MC. He knows the lines, can sing, can dance, he could even walk a tight-rope if the occasion called for it. He's played the role before and knows what the audience wants. He has the experience enough to make this movie a hit. Many people I encounter have never read or heard anything having to do with POTO think its a cheesy ghost story. Wouldn't they think so even more if the casting is majorly screwed up? Michael Crawford has Erik's voice and talent. He is the only phantom to be able to capture all the emotions of Erik. They say that legends never die. But the memory of Michael's preformance would eventually die with the only (though many) people who have seen him. Perhaps we could truly immortalize him and the Phantom of the Opera at its greatest in this film.

P.S. Can you imagine the soundtrack with anyone other than MC? Esecialy Banderas?

Comments: I've just heard about them wanting to cast a 'younger' phantom in the Phantom movie and am not only appalled but mystified. If they've even bothered to read the book then they would know that the Phantom was originally meant to be in his fifties or if not his late forties at the very least! And then there's the fact that the phantom is meant to be disfigured! I mean when he isn't wearing a mask his face is supposed to be deformed beyond recognition anyway so what's the point in casting some young, handsome pretty boy to play him? What I think is part of the Phantom's appeal in the show is his maturity. A younger actor cannot hope to sing in quite the same manner as a slightly older man. However hard he tries his voice must always betray signs of his age thus making the character of the Phantom that little less credible. Oh and one more thing: Surely if their main target audience is Phantom fans then they should realize that these people enjoy going to the show so much that any major alteration from the way the show is portrayed is bound to have a negative impact on the fans? Or are they just stupid? They should take a leaf out of the people who made The Rocky Horror Picture Show's book and cast the actors who managed to make the show so fantastic in the first place which in Phantom's case means MICHAEL CRAWFORD!

Comments: To "the powers that be": Concerning the proposed Phantom movie: Yes, the Phantom of the Opera has a built in fan base-but it is these fans that want the original story with the original phantom-Michael Crawford. You have proven success with the original-it cannot be improved upon with a younger phantom. In the book the phantom is at least in his 50's. Michael Crawford has the voice that has that special something-so that we can understand why Christine is drawn to the phantom in the fist place.

Comments: Hi, I'm from Spain. I love very much The Phantom of the Opera... I have the original score, the book, I've been in Paris, at the Palais Garnier.... I always liked all about the Phantom, everything. I want to see the new film about the musical, and although an Spanish actor is referred to be the Phantom (Antonio Banderas, which I think has the perfect age) I really love Michael Crawford's voice, so.... I want to see the movie as soon as possible with the main role played by the truth voice: mr. Crawford. Kisses.

Comments: Hello Mr. Schumacher: I had written you a letter some years ago, when you were chosen the 1st time to direct the movie of Phantom. At that time my request to you was simple, to cast Michael Crawford, in the lead role, as he is the ONLY Phantom who can evoke such emotions from the movie going public, as he did with the stage version. The world has heard the orginal cast album and fell in love with Michael's magical and glorious voice. If you want the same reaction, as was experienced when he did the production on 3 world stages, my opinion and advice to you is to cast NO other actor of the day, or peformer for the part, than Mr. Crawford himself. If you cast someone else, the movie is going to fizzle big time. The price for admission is Michael Crawford.... Mr. Schumacher, Christine is looking for a Father figure, to replace the father she had lost in death. Not a brother, and that is exactly what you suggested in your interview with the Sun Times in Chicago. You promised me back then that your only choice for Phantom would be no other than Michael Crawford. Mr. Schumaucker, please keep your word. Thank you, Joyce Cebular

Comments: Think OSCARS!!! - Please remember the MULTIPLE awards Michael Crawford won for his role as "The Phantom" - maybe that will entice you to bring him back - not to mention that there would most likely be A LOT of time (and MONEY) saved in the filming due to his experience and familiarity with everything regarding the role.

Comments: It's really so VERY tiring and sad to see the resistance we Phantom/Michael Crawford fans must tolerate regarding this issue of having to fight SO HARD to be heard, considered and given a bit of thought from the people holding "the keys" to the casting of the "Phantom" movie.

WHY can't the OBVIOUS be acknowledged and recognized by these people??? The patrons of the movie (the fans) are the ones who will (or WON'T, if it isn't Michael as the Phantom) be spending OUR HARD EARNED MONEY to see this film. I just cannot comprehend the logic behind this - do they think a three year run (in three different parts of the world) of daily SELL-OUT crowds was a fluke??? Can the casting director not see what a HUGE money-maker and BLOCKBUSTER it WILL BE with Michael Crawford as the Phantom??? It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE to me.

And as far as a "younger" Phantom...HA! Try to find ANY Phantom movie that has a 30 year-old Phantom!!! It would not only look RIDICULOUS, but it would certainly NOT be believable.

Mr. Schumacher, what would the HARM be in having Michael do an audition for you??? - Hey, if he can't cut the mustard (yeah, right!), then fine, at least the fans will be sated in your having given him consideration. But at least give the man his due - if it weren't for him being the original Phantom, do you even think there would be this much interest in the movie and its casting??? I sincerely doubt it.

Forgive my audacity and the tone of this letter, but I am truly insulted by the negative comments that have been flying around against a man who has made this part a LEGEND!!! And whatever happened to EQUAL OPPORTUNITY??? Let the best man have the part, PLEASE!!! It's Michael Crawford or NO OTHER - and I'm willing to bet that this will show up in your box office receipts. There are a lot more fans out here than you think, sir. And we know what we want. If this were put to a democratic vote, who do you think would win??? I'll say no more.

Thank you for your time and patience with those of us who happen to care enough to give you input on what will be either a BLOCKBUSTER or FLOP. We're just trying to help.
