Comments: when my oldest son was 16 he was given a cassette tape of phantom of the opera. i am not sure what type of music he thought was on the tape but he enjoyed it so much he knew i would like it and he let me borrow the tape. i played it until it would not play anymore and my youngest son replaced the tape with the cd a few years later. i just love this opera and the voice of Michael Crawford really fits his part as the "Phantom"

Comments: Geez...I've LOVED this musical since I was like 8 years old when it first appeared on Broadway. I remember back then hoping they would make a movie of it so I could see Michael Crawford's performance as the phantom. Now that I hear a movie is finally going to be made, I will be extremely OUTRAGED, at the same time very heartbroken, if Michael is NOT cast (shakes her head). FINALLY being able to watch his performance after so long would be the ONLY reason I would really want to see this movie. After all, it was hearing HIS VOICE on the soundtrack that really inspired me to want to see phantom on Broadway.

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber, you have no idea what you are doing to your fans. These are the same fans who made your shows (including Phantom) a hit. You should thank them in return by listening to their request, which is to cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Your reasons for not casting Michael due to his age is ridiculous and (to use your own words on Phantom) "hokum". May we remind you that the Phantom character is an older man to begin with, possibly in his 50s or older. The heavy, horrific makeup completely covers the face of the actor playing the Phantom; therefore, you cannot see the actor's true appearance. Additionally, everybody from Michael/Phantom/musical fans to non-fans know who should play the Phantom in the film.

I feel that your reasons for not casting Michael are out of jealousy. If that's the case, you should let go of your jealousy because Michael was among the factors that made your show a hit. By not casting him, you are basically slapping him in the face for contributing to your success.

I also feel that you are deliberately ignoring not only the Phantom character but also the fans' demands to have Michael cast. You said that you do not care what the fans think. That's another slap in the face to those who contributed to the show's success, this time us! I also feel that you are snubbing the fans because you think you know better than us. Let me tell you this: do not insult my and everyone's intelligence here. Never underestimate the fans because you screw this up, the fans', audiences', and critics' responses are going to be brutal and strike you harder than you think. They'll lose all respect for you. In fact, some have *already* lost respect for you, especially in light of the latest news on why you will not cast Michael.

If you do go ahead and cast someone else as the Phantom and ruin your masterpiece (as you once called), don't you dare blame us when your movie bombs at the box office. All the fingers will be pointed directly at you. That will be what you get when you turn a deaf ear to your fans and for destroying your own work that was perfect in the first place. (Ever heard of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? You've heard of that saying, haven't you?)

Comments: I was really disgusted after I read the latest article. Put in blunt terms, what Lloyd Webber said was that Michael is a has-been, and that he can no longer sing. That is absolutely ridiculous. If nothing else will show what kind of man Lloyd Webber is, this will.

Comments: I've already signed the guest book before, but I had to come back and add more commments. Michael IS the Phantom! This story was created for Michael to play Eric (the Phantom!) I first heard the story when I was a young girl and literally fell in love with it. This magical story is trully wonderful. The love, the passion and the depth of it swept me, the hopeless romantic, off my feet. I own the CD with the origional cast and I saw the play in Calgary Canada. I was amazed by it. I never got the chance to see Michael and would love it if he came back as the Phantom. Especially in a movie for I will be able to keep it forever. Please allow Michael to play the Phantom... no one else will be able to portray the emotion of the character of Eric like him.
Best wishes Michael

I live in Florida and I just wanted you to know that I definitely support your campaign, it would be TERRIBLE if Antonio Banderas got such a wonderful role that Michael Crawford deserves. I even got the address for Warner Bros. off your campaign site and wrote them a letter. I will be mailing it tomorrow (since today is Sunday and mail doesn't come today). Anyway, I just wanted 2 let you know you have my support! Bubye

Comments: I think it sucks, just because he's too old doesn't mean that he can't play the phantom...I mean look at Tom Jones these days. Can't they put some make-up on the left side of his face? Michael inspired me so much when I saw him, so it would be a shame if somebody else would play the phantom....Caroline.

I love this site.. Michael Crawford should defanitly be the Phantom if theres going to be a film of POTO. I read that article of what ALW said about MC not being the Phantom... well if hes not going to be the Phantom then there shouldn't be a movie. Hes the best and the only one who could do it!

Comments: I've been coming to this site for a while and have been waiting for some news about the movie. Sadly, there is some. That news is that ALW has ruled out Michael Crawford from the film.
ALW has just managed to become my least favorite person in the entertainment industry. His reasons for not casting Crawford are ridiculous. His age? You've got to be kidding me. Nobody seems to care that people in their late 20's often play high school kids in movies. And this character would be wearing a full makeup and on top of that a mask.
It would be one thing if Crawford auditioned for the role and was rejected. I would not be happy, but I would understand. The idea that ALW could just reject him without giving him a decent chance is moronic. I'm guessing he carries some stupid grudge because Crawford became the biggest sensation from the musical, with both himself and his wife receiving little credit.
Mr. Lloyd Webber, please stop acting like a child, give the audience what it wants, and immortalize your work with the best possible cast.

I truly support this campaign, i think Michael is THE perfect phantom - passionate, sensual, mysterious, despairing - he employs countless emotions with perfection, and takes the viewer/listener on an engaging journey through the Phantom's world.
WHY WOULD THEY POSSIBLY CONSIDER CASTING SOMEONE ELSE?!?!?!?

Comments: Hi! I know, I know, I have already signed this many times, but I cannot help it!!! The Phantom of the Opera is such a great, inspiring, thrilling story that makes my heart leap every time. I am in 8th grade and I first saw it when I was in 6th grade. I can't remember who I saw though, however, I bought the CD with the original cast - I was blown away by the Phantom. I thought the guy I saw was great... but Michael Crawford was... INSPIRING, THRILLING, INTICING, SWEET, SOFT, PERSUASIVE! Call it whatever, but I can't even describe him in plain words! He was WONDERFUL!! When I heard there was going to be a Phantom of the Opera movie musical, I was sooooo excited. I thought, wow, Michael Crawford is going to be awesome! But then I heard the rumor about Antonio Banderas maybe playing the role - I was CRUSHED! Antonio has a good voice, but it's not a PHANTOM voice, like Michael's is! Antonio sounds more... well, the opposite of the Phantom. Michael Crawford's voice is so sweet and soft and persuasive that it fits the Phantom of the Opera PERFECTLY! He is the original and only TRUE Phantom that there will ever be and I know Andrew Lloyd Webber will KEEP HIS PROMISE to Michael Crawford... or at least I hope so! Michael Crawford deserves the role without a doubt!

He rules the part and the movie would be a great hit as only he can do the part with the true meaning of the story, as he made the Broadway Hit the great sucess that it was.

Comments: Our family has never had enough money to go see the bordway shows. But, we've enjoyed watching the musicals on film (Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar , and and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; just to name a few). And I have always wanted to see The Phantom of the Opera, and have wondered when they would turn it into a film so I would be able to watch it. While looking for a video clip I have once seen I found THIS site. I am glad to find out that they ARE going to turn Phantom of the Opera into a film.

thank you
and they better use MC as the phantom. I couln't see the role played by any other.

Comments: I just recently found out about the movie that was in the works and I was appalled to hear that Michael Crawford might not play the phantom. I was privelaged enough to see him as the phantom on broadway, and he was so amazing. I have seen the show on broadway multiple times after, and none of the other actors I have seen can even compare to Michael Crawford. If the movie were to be made without him, I for onw wouldn't watch it because no one is the phantom but Michael Crawford. He has inspired me in my own music and I see him as a musical genius. He rightly should play the phantom and continue to put his name down in history by bringing such a pivotal character to life for so many people.

I have not seen Michael Crawford actually play the Phanotm, but did attend a concert of his in which he sang the songs from the Phantom.. out of all the MANY times I have seen the play, NOONE could compare to Michael Crawford playing the Phantom. It would be a disgrace to the play to have someone else play the part that he has made his own.

Comments: I was first introduced to the Phantom during a half-time show of an NFL football game nearly 15 years ago. I was moved to tears... and that was the Phantom on artificial turf!!! From that moment, my dream of dreams was to see Phantom of the Opera LIVE! It would never happen... it could never happen... I live a small Vermont town with a population of 1,815. But wait... I was in college in the Philadelphia area when the Honors Club went on a field trip to--believe it or not--Phantom of the Opera at the Forrest Theatre. The cost to me--$10 !!! My dream came true--in spades!!! And not just once, but twice. After the first experience, I just had to take my mother to see it. However, I had by then purchased the soundtrack with Mr. Michael Crawford singing as the Phantom. Though I have not seen Michael Crawford as the Phantom, he became the Phantom to me. My second experience, Live, was a bit disappointing... The Phantom would never enter the mind of another premodona by replacing his Christine Daae, now would he??! Neither should the Phantom be replaced by any other. Mr. Crawford is the Phantom--the Phantom is Mr. Crawford.

Comments: It's a dream towards me personally: to see Mr. Crawford become the Phantom on the big screen.
I have never seen him perform the Phantom onstage; I was too young to see him. Now that I've become interested in the performing arts, I decided to buy The Phantom Of The Opera soundtrack to see what all of the fuss was about. Simply, I yearn to see Mr. Crawford perform as the Phantom. It was.... truly amazing. I have heard Mr. Crawford become the Phantom, but that only lead me to my desire to SEE him become the Phantom.
I have a tendency not to "cling" to any celebrity. No celebrity seems special enough to me. True, I do praise some above others, but I would never consider myself a true fan to anyone.
That was until Mr. Crawford entered my mind! This shows how much this means to me.
Many will feel left down if Mr. Crawford is not cast as the Phantom. If Mr. Crawford is not cast, it will be letting down my only chance, my dream, to see him perform the Phantom. It really is a dream.
