Comments: No other man can play this part. When I fell in love with the musical at the age of 12, his voice used to have such amazing emotional power over me, bringing out images and tender thoughts. Seeing Antonio Banderas sing the song Phantom Of the Opear at ALW's anniversary show, for me proved that he was wrong for the part. He brought a latin type feel towards the song, which totally takes away the feelings and emotions that should accompany it.
Its perfectly obvious that michael is the one for the job, and if the big bosses at the top of the film industry, who think they know what people want, cast somebody else then they are blind and are making a huge mistake.

Comments: I believe that Michael Crawford, above all others, should have the starring role in the new movie. Not only does he embody the spirit of that role, he IS the Phantom. For me, no other could play such a noble part as well as Mr. Crawford. And having either Sarah Brightman or Dale Christian as Christine would just add to the movies appeal.

Well this is my point exactly.
I think I made myself clear, no?

Well, just in case:
What the heck does ALW think he's doing? Casting Michael Crawford would put box office sales through the roof! Sure he could cast Antonio Banderass or some other big name star who can't sing, and the movie may gain some hype for a little while, but ultimately it will BOMB! Is this what we want to happen to one of the greatest musicals of all time??! I think not! If they're gonna make a movie at all, at least make one that will reflect the power and emotion of the Phantom's tale. How do you do this? You cast MICHAEL CRAWFORD! Ok, now that I'm done rambling, I would just like to say that there's no issue with Mike's age or singing talent, cuz he's still got it! Back on Broadway baby! How much more proof do these guys need? Jeesh! Ok I'll stop now, it's just that this whole thing makes me furious. Michael Crawford is THE Phantom!

Comments: I confess that if I had not seen Michael Crawford's tender and moving performance as the Phantom that I would not have become a fan of the story of the Phantom of the Opera. It is the depth of character that Michael puts into his portrayal of Erik that drew me in and made me FEEL the Phantom's pain, desire, trepidation.
I, for one, hope and pray that when this film is made, that the main focus will be on the Phantom's struggle -- with himself. His journey to find love -- or to find out what love really is.

And the fans wait.

Comments: Great page! Very funny! My mother and I love Michael! I'm only 15, but love Broadway & ALW. I cannot imagine anyone but Michael playing the Phantom. No one else has the voice. I heard about Antonio Banderas playing the Phantom and I couldn't believe it. The voices don't compare, even though I like Antonio. He was good in Evita, mainly because it was set in Argentina and I haven't heard any other production. But there is no way in Hello Dolly that Antonio will play the Phantom!

Comments: Only rarely does a work of art achieve the love of fans it's almost sacriligeous to tamper with it. POTO is, as is
LOTR,so loved by fans.
As the LOTR movie attempted to be true to Tolkien's beloved trilogy , and as a result was a huge success. So too should the creators of the movie version of the much loved POTO stay as true to possible to the original or risk rejection of fans, and failure. I've seen LOTR 8 times so far, and would expect to do so with a POTO with Michael Crawford.

Comments: I have a collection of POTO movies(Lon Chaney,Claude Rains,Herbert Lom,etc.)..all good monster type movies..then I saw several of Michael's POTO video clips & have seen Michael quite a few times in concert singing POTO songs..also have seen the POTO stage productions with other performers 5 times..noone has stirred me quite like Michael's Erik..his voice..his body/hands...his love for Erik, etc..became my love for Erik..not as a monster..but as a man who had known rejection all of his life..a person with deep feelings..who had never known love..my heart went out to Erik because of Michael..such an outstanding "once in a lifetime" performance MUST BE PRESERVED ON FILM.. I have seen it now in excess of 30 times and always enjoy it but know that nobody can match him in voice or passion for this role. It is one of my greatest regrets not to see him perform as the phantom so it would bring me such joy to at least be able to watch him on film. Comments: Only Michael will do. Casting Madonna in Evita was a mistake. The music had to be lowered to accomodate her voice. Don't do that to Phantom. Michael Crawford has everything down, the hands the voice the movements. He is the only Phantom.
