Comments: After seeing Michael Crawford appear at the Bowl this weekend, there left no room for doubt. There is NO OTHER Phantom. Warner would do a grave disservice to itself and the audience to dismiss the built-in repeat audience that already exists! I hope it isn't too late to turn the situation around - it would be tragic indeed -- there are just some institutions that cannot be replaced. Michael Crawford is one of them.

Comments: I was very fortunate to have gone to the Michael Crawford concert here in Cleveland. It was by far one of the best shows that I've seen. Even though he wasn't dressed as the 'Phantom' when he sang songs from the POTO, he truely made you feel that you were experiencing a Broadway production. His voice and his motions were unbelieveable. Warner Bros. needs to send some of their people to one of his concerts and then go home and watch Antonio B. in "Evita", and then make their decision as to who should play the 'Phantom'. I'm sure that they would change their minds and go with the right choice....Michael Crawford!!!!!

Comments: Having just seen Michael Crawford in concert at the Hollywood Bowl, I can only add my opinion to so many others: that NO ONE should have the role of the Phantom except Michael Crawford. Of all the other fine performers who have had the role during the play's run, none have had the phenomenal success and recognition that he has enjoyed. The 'official' Phantom CD is with Mr. Crawford, not with any of the others who have had the role. I truly do believe that Mr. Lloyd Webber and the studio would be making a grave mistake to attempt to cast anyone else in this role. Mr. Crawford's 'fan following' is so large and so vocal, and there is enough outrage already at the mere IDEA of casting someone else, that NOT to cast Mr. Crawford is going to hurt the studio and Mr. Lloyd Webber not only financially, but in many other ways as well. It is impossible to believe that the studio and Mr. Lloyd Webber would or could be so oblivious to the fans wishes, since it is us, the fans, who are going to buy or not buy tickets to see the film, our dollars which will ultimately enrich the bank accounts of the studio and Mr. Lloyd Webber. How then can so many voices be ignored?

Comments: You have always been meant to play the part of the phantom. I hope that all the support from your fans shows how much we enjoy listening to your fantastic voice over and over again. I have seen the production, but it was not with you as the phantom. Listening to the cd, I have always hoped that I would get the chance to play the part just once more. It would mean so much if would do the movie. I have never written a celebrity before, so please take this to heart and know how much we want to see you as phantom. Thank you for your time.

Comments: Have only recently discovered Michael Crawford. Did hear about him in the Phantom and was mildly curious. I remember him as a very skinny actor with a squeaky voice. Then an English friend told me to listen to his Lloyd-Webber album and I was amazed. I have turned into a fan. What a voice!!! Have seen him in concert finally. What a voice!!!

Comments: I cannot put into words how great Michael Crawford's voice is. I had not been interested in musicals until I heard him sing the "Music of the Night" That was eight years ago. His voice still gives me goose bumps. I now love musicals and would enjoy seeing them brought to film so that more people could afford to see them. I saw Evita and enjoyed it. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas except that he just does not fit the role as I see it. I have read in the newspaper that Michael is considered too old for the role. I have read the novel and I picture the phantom as a mature man. As to Michael not being very famous. His concert tour is doing very well. I went to the Aug. 8th performance in Irvine. I am below the age of 25 and my friends and I would only go to see Phantom of the Opera if Michael were in it.

I've seen several movies with Antonio Banderas in them, and I've seen Michael Crawford as the Phantom, as well as in concert. NO COMPARISON---what would the Phantom movie be without THE Phantom?

I've faithfully listened to every CD he made for the past 4 years and he (unknowingly) has inspired me to become the singer I am today. He deserves the role in the movie and it will be a great shame to the public if he is not casted.

Comments: Michael Crawford MUST star in the film version of "Phantom". That is the only choice. As many have said, there is a very prestigious list of stage to film performances: Joel Grey (perfection), Yul Bynner (a master), and Rex Harrison (wonderful). If Michael doesnt star, it will be a crime. ALSO, something to think about.....We should make it known that the fans want the movie of "Phantom" to be of Oscar quality, not hastily thrown together and edited for mass appeal, like "Evita" recently was.

Comments: There is only one logical choice for this role in a big screen production. Mr. Crawford is a multi-talented man who has the voice, the acting ability and the sheer presence to bring this role to life. When he sings Music of the Night, I feel he's singing to me and I am Christine. I recently saw a concert he gave in California broadcast over PBS, he never disappoints me with any of his performances. Sheer magic. Let the powers that be know that the middle aged folks that are movie goers are tired of having 20 and 30 something actors shoved at them. There is plenty of room for older talented actors like Mr. Crawford and if they choose anyone else to play this role--they will have, once again, missed the boat--and quite a few tickets sales! Thanks for listening Karen R. Schief

Comments: Only once in a lifetime does someone come along that can play a certain type of chracter as if they really were him. This happened when Michael was the Phantom. If anyone can bring people to the screen he could. He played the role in LA NY and London. Think about the Phantom. He is suppose to be the angel of music, and lets face it no ones voice is as soft or more like an angels then Crawfrods. Travolta does not have the right build and sorry but the Phantom was not mexican so bandares would never do. Think even more about the Phantom..... He is suppose to have a hypnotic voice.... Michael has this as proven by his role in EFX... in Vegas. This show made excellent use of that hypnotic tone and he gathered large crowds every night. He has also done radio, which means that his voice must be special....radio takes a certain quality of voice that you can not get anywhere else.... Michael has this quality. Just think.. "Phantom of the Opera" the movie starring the origional Phantom of the Opera..... Think of the number of people he alone would draw to movie screens just in Europe and the US. For he is extremly popualr in the Us as well, as can be told by his number of sell out performances...... Please Vote Michael as THE PHANTOM......Johnny

Comments: Please give the Phantom role to Michael Crawford. He IS the phantom, and according to an article I once read, was promised this by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. He should absolutely be given first refusal. As for John TRavolta and Antonio Banderas, please, they may be OK actors, but neither has what it takes for this very vocally demanding role. If all else fails, think about the bottom line, MONEY. We, Michael Crawford fans will be paying to see this movie, people who are not interested in the play anyway will not go just because of the actors named above. In fact, I would think that none of Michael Crawford's fans would go to see it, therefore it is doomed at the box office. Sincerely, Doris Thompson

Comments: The "Phantom" needs a voice as well as a presence. The show is so powerful it does not need today's 'hot ticket' to star in it. I am afraid if Travolta (whose acting and dancing I do like) or Banderas were to star, the movie would end up like "Evita", better seen on stage than the silver screen. Haven't we all read books we loved, only to see the movie version leave us bitterly disappointed? SRRadza

Comments: I love Michael Crawford. I saw him perform in the original production of POTO on Broadway, and recently saw him perform in West Palm Beach on his tour. I have several of his CD's too, and I especially like his new Christian one: what a refreshing change from most musical artists today, who wouldn't be caught dead performing traditional Christian hymns and songs - except for possibly Christmas tunes. I hope Michael wins the Emmy, and I hope he gets the part of the Phantom in the movie version. I recently saw Brad Little perform Eric in Orlando in April, and he was excellent too, but too young for the movie version, I think. Anyway, if anyone loves classic musicals of Broadway or the movies, consider signing on to a new mailing list "I Love Classic Musicals": just click on the link above. Thanks! :)

Comments: Michael Crawford is The Phantom! The vast majority of the people never had a chance to experience the Phantom of The Opera, let alone the performance with Michael Crawford. Bringing The Phantom to the screen with Michael Crawford will make it possible for everyone to experience Andrew LLolyd Webber's music the way it was intended to be experienced. We could not attend a movie of The Phantom of The Opera that did not cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Instead we would stay at home, close our eyes and listen to Michael Crawford and Sara Brighton on CD.

Comments: HI! I want the only Phantom in the movie: Michael Crawford. He is the only Phantom. If there is a movie, which if Michael isn't ,there shouldn't be. If Antonio is in the movie, Michael won't be "our own Phantom" and we all want to be, obviously. Andrew (Lloyd Webber) should know this, he picked our man in the first place. To top this off Andrew promised Michael that if there was ever a Phantom movie, he would be in it, he should keep the promise. Can you belive how well Michael is taking this? His spech included "It wouldn't be the end of the world for me." and " If they change their minds I'm avalible!". He, Michael, is like the sweetest man ever, and Andrew shouldn't treat him like this. I guess that is it, if Andrew ever comes to this site (and he should) I hope he listen, it's his wonderfuyl Phantom of the Opera that he is putting on the line. Comments: I swear that Michael Crawford is truely an Angel of Music for no one else can transform into the Phantom with out the cape or the mask, but he only has to sing to become Erik. It is amazing to see Michael Crawford transform from a man with a sense of humor to a man who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. If you have ever seen him perform, you know he has the ability to change from Michael Crawford to Erik as soon as the music begins to play. It is easy to feel Erik's agony with the heartbreaking performance of Michael Crawford, who puts such sadness and pain in his voice, which seems to enter our hearts and to make us feel for Erik. What would be the saddest thing would be to have to role of the Phantom stolen away from the man who gave him his voice, his soul and his heart and that man is Michael Crawford.

Comments: I conducted a small poll for myself last week. I asked 100 people if they knew who Michael Crawford was. 80 Percent of people commented that they did - the 20 who didn't I then said he played the Phantom. all twenty said that they now knew who I was talking about. I then asked if a film version were to be done who would they prefer as the phantom Michael or Antonio Bandaras. 97% said Michael. Now this is just an example of one person with an hour to spare and 97 people said that they wanted Michael. This is not an Isolated case. Movie people want bankability - Michael has it already HE IS THE PHANTOM - don't take it away from him!

Comments: Who remembers the name of a single other actor who played the Phantom? Only one name can ever be associated with the Phantom and only one voice. Michael Crawford, if he is forgotten for all his other roles (AND HE WON'T BE!)will always live in our memory as the true Phantom. His incredible voice singing the beautiful songs-that he made his own-can never be duplicated by any other singer. The role belongs to him and him alone. Let Antonio investigate other venues that are in the realm of his ability. SHAME ON YOU, WARNER BROS.

Well done movie musicals made even better by having the original cast members transition their interpretations of their characters from the stage to the large screen. Michael Crawford, original Phantom in the London, Broadway and LA adaptations of "The Phantom of the Opera".Need I say more? Come on WB! Don't you know a good thing when you see it? We do!

Who do people think they are even suggesting that someone else could do this role justice. Michael and Phantom is like peanut butter and jelly - they just are meant to go together. I wish you all luck, and whatever my mom (diane chortanoff dchortan@coin.state.pa.us) can do to help, don't hesitate to let us know. Well...... back to the panels.

He deserves to be the one for this role, because he is the only actor in the world who can make "The Phantom of the Opera" live and breath and he alone should recreate his role for the future film.

Comments: I, too, believe there is no one other than Michael Crawford to play the title role in the musical version of the Phantom movie. I first heard "Music of the Night" during an ice skating performance on TV more than 10 years ago. I had no idea what it was or who was singing. But THAT voice and THAT song immediately reached a part of me. I have since come to greatly admire this man who touched me so deeply. If it hadn't been for Michael's performance in London, New York, and Los Angeles, the stage production would probably not have survived nearly as long as it has. It certainly would not have the same flavor or the same following. The critics were not "thrilled" with the show, but they practically fell all over themselves with praise for Michael's performance. Andrew Lloyd Webber, himself, commented on how sad it was that the original stars from so many of the great musicals of the past had been replaced when the movie versions were made. Was that just an idle comment he didn't really believe in? Here is his perfect opportunity not to screw up this movie, and it seems he would rather bow to Warner Bros' idea of a box-office draw. (Frankly, I'd go see Michael stand on a box and not say a word for two hours before I'd spend money to see Antonio Banderas, but...) Why not make a movie that would preserve one of musical theater's most moving performances for generations to come? Cast Michael Crawford as Erik, and that will happen. It should be clear to Warner Bros by now what the overwhelming majority of fans want, and that we want them to stop dragging their feet on this project, as well. P.S. - I agree with Theresa's note that Dale Kristien would be a poor choice for Christine. Her voice makes me cringe, and it sounds like she's forcing every syllable out--not what the part calls for at all, as it states that Christine sings in a "clear, pure soprano."

Comments: Even though other phantoms have done a very good job at the role, I believe Michael Crawford is the only true "phantom". His performance helps the viewer feel the phantom's pain, soul and spirit. If a "Phantom of the Opera" movie is created, Michael Crawford is the only performer who should recreate the role on film. It will be a more tremendous success than any other actor.

( I met Mr. Crawford four years ago and, believe me folks, he's very nice and funny.) This role really belongs to Michael Crawford. I'm glad you've decided to make a petition. Comments: I really hope that Michael gets to be in the Phantom movie. The thought of either John Travolta or Antonio Banderas in the title role is just absurd! What is the matter with Andrew Lloyd Webber?! He is such an idiot to go along with this whole farce! He really thinks Michael would not draw crowds and make money if he plays the Phantom. He was the orignal Phantom, it's only right for him to play the Phantom in the movie version. I also would love to see Sarah Brightman play Christine in the movie as well. She still looks beautiful and sings as lovely as the angel she plays. That would be so cool to see both Michael and Sarah together again. They both are just awesome and make a great pair. By the way, I don't think Dale Kristien would be good for the role of Christine. She sings, er, screams like a chipmunk. She's an insult to singers, like myself. My music teacher even told me he thought she was a terrible singer. If she was his student she never would have been in the show. "There are so many people in the music biz who no nothing of music", was what he told me. Scary thought. Anyway, Michael and Sarah both belong in the movie. If Andrew is smart he'll put them both in it and make a hell of a movie!

Comments: When I heard Mr. Crawford would not be in the "Phantom" movie, I was outraged. Saying that he does not have enough "draw" for moviegoers is absurd. All I can say is that there is no phantom without Michael Crawford. It is unthinkable. Warner Bros: Remember when the producers of "My Fair Lady" said Julie Andrews didn't have the boxoffice draw? They cast Audrey Hepburn instead and Julie Andrews won the Oscar that year for "Mary Poppins." You make that mistake and you deserve the consequences. Give me a break: John Travolta?? Next, they'll be casting Danny DeVito! How about Kermit? We want Michael.

Comments: I personelly think the only person qualified to play the part of the phantom is Michael Crawford. I have two teenage girls and we all his cds including the soundtrack of phantom of the opera. The only thing my daughter wanted on her 14th birthday was to go to see Sarah Brightman, which we did. My girls now all the words to the musical. When I told them that the studios were thinking of making the movie they were thrilled, till they heard Antonio Bandaras might be the phantom. They were upset that Michael Crawford wasn't going to be the phantom. Now if that doesn't tell you something I don't know what would. Teenage girls wanting Michael over Antonio!!!!! We have already discussed not going to the movie if Antonio is casted as the phantom. The studios need to do a poll before they make a great mistake. There is only one phantom and that is MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!!!!!!

Comments: I would like to cast my vote for Michael Crawford as the one and only true Phantom. Although Antonio Banderas might make an excellent Zorro and possibly an excellent Raoul, only Michael Crawford elevates Andrew Lloyd Webber's outstanding score to its highest potential. If anyone other than Michael Crawford is cast as the Phantom, the production will only be a movie; if Michael Crawford is cast as the Phantom, it will be a work of art and conceivably one of the best movie musicals of all time. I hope what is viewed by many as a magical moment in theater and music history is captured on film for a wider audience and future generations to experience. Respectfully submitted,T. Comments: I know how good Michael Crawford is, I saw him! When WB filmed My Fair Lady, they ignored Julie Andrews as Eliza. Jack Warner, himself, supposedly said, "She'll never make it in Movies". Instead they cast Audrey Hepburn as Eliza. WB did not even credit Marni Nixon who dubbed the singing for Miss Hepburn. My Fair Lady won all the major Academy Awards for the year -- except best actress. That award went to an actress appearing for the first time in a movie. Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. History repeats itself when people do not learn from their mistakes. Will it be deja vu all over again?
