Every once in a while,
someone comes along that shakes the very foundations of everyone's life.
May be a president, maybe a scientist who discovered a cure for a deadly
disease. But for the past sixteen years, our lives have been changed by
a very simple man: a British actor.
Actors don't do much, right? They just provide a temporary escape from
the world through a two-and-a-half hour show, right? It's surely not
anything to get excited about....unless that actor has the power to
bring together over sixty-million people world-wide.
I'm sure that when The Phantom of the Opera first opened in London,
Michael Crawford didn't think that he was doing anything REALLY
spectacular, but his performance set off a chain reaction, touching the
people in the first row of seats, and spreading to touch every single
person who has ever heard him sing, even if those people never had the
chance to see him perform live, people like myself. Michael's portayal
of Erik, The Phantom of the Opera, showed the world what love REALLY
means.
But the reaction didn't stop at Phantom. It continued to spread through
Michael. And again, not in seemingly big ways, but rather through the
support of charities, though cancer walks, MS walks, AIDS walks, all
done by his fans who have been inspired by the love of one simple actor.
And his love spreads through music. I don't think there has ever been
anyone who has brought together more people though music. How often can
someone be moved to tears, just from hearing someone sing? When that
someone is Michael Crawford, I don't think there is any possible way to
count the people touched by his music.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, Warner Brothers, and Antonio Banderas might dismiss
this campaign as a pathetic waste of time just to support putting "some
actor" in a movie, but this campaign is more than that. This campaign is
about supporting a man, a caring human being, who spreads his love by
music, by acting, by simple gestures of kindness, and who brings the
world together just by being himself.
We may win this fight to preserve Michael's Phantom, and we might not,
but whatever happens, we WILL WIN, because we have shown The Powers That
Be that one simple man has the power to change the world for the better.
May Michael Crawford always teach us what it really means to love.
