How can they possibly considering such an obvious.. mistake!? (Of course.. after seeing some of the merchandise I have to sell.. EESH!) I hope WB realises the mistake it's making.. and decides on the obvious and only choice, Michael Crawford! |

I would like to see the movie if it starred the original Phantom, Michael Crawford, He made the Phantom, and I think he should be the one to present it to the millions who would be seeing the movie version. I don't think there is a Hollywood actor out there who could do justice to the part of Erik. |

| Name: BIEDSPUB Website: Referred by: Advertisment/Brochure From: Kansas City Time: 1998-07-27 13:44:07 Comments: I have to voice my absolute agreement with everything on this website. Michael Crawford is synonymous with "The Phantom of the Opera." His is the voice that every one of the 12 million owners of the OCR has listened to over the past 12 years. His is the performance that is emulated over and over again in the current productions. Yes, each new actor tries to make the role his own, but the majority of the moves and gestures that we see today were first performed by Michael Crawford. He created the character that everyone fell in love with all those years ago. The notion that he is too old for the part is absolutely ludicrous. If the pinheads at Warner Brothers would actually do their homework on this production, they would then KNOW that the Phantom is SUPPOSE to be more of a father-type figure to Christine. And in this day and age of sexy older leading men (i.e., Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson, etc.), Warner's is missing the boat when they say Michael is too old. I've also never seen a company shoot themselves in the foot quite so often. They've made some mega-bombs lately and failed to promote the very few good movies they have made. Now, by insisting on using a Hollywood name in the title role, they are completely alienating a built-in audience base who would see the Phantom movie dozens of times. These are the people who have seen the theatrical productions 20, 30, 40, some even over 100 times, and at at least $55.00 a pop. These people would return to the movie again and again, AND purchase any merchandise and memorabilia they can get their hands on, BUT, ONLY if the movie is kept true to the original production and that means letting Michael Crawford immortalize his legandary performance. WAKE UP WARNER BROTHERS!!! Stop underestimating the intelligence of this audience. Give us a movie that we can believe in whole-heartedly. Give us the Tony Award-winning performance that deserves to be preserved. GIVE US MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!! |

I was looking through the other guest books and I read one of the entries and the person who wrote it was alittle freaked out stating that Antonio Banderas already had won the role of the Phantom. I saw Mr. Banderas on the Rosie O'Donnell show the other day and he did not state that he already had been cast in the part, he said that he hoped that he would play the part, so there still is chance that Mr. Crawford will have the opportunity to be the Phantom in the movie version. Please let me know anymore information on this situation. Thanks for having this web site. |

He brings so much real emotion and beauty to the role that other actors just cannot equal. His voice is ethereally gorgeous, to say the least. He is a capable, experienced, and talented actor who is ready and willing for the part. So, let's let him at it!!! Wake up Warner Bros., Michael will make the movie a smash! He's gorgeous, awesome, and the bomb. |

He brings such feeling into the role, because not only is he a great actor, and singer, but he brought the Phantom to life for the first time. He should have the honor of being Phantom again. |

In my opinion, there is no other actor that could do justice to the role of the Phantom. His acting ability along with his voice could only be matched by his passion for the role. My husband and I just saw him perform at the Arts Center in N.J.last night. We also got to see him at Radio City in June. He brought the house down at both perfomances. Truely he is the only one I feel will send the movie over the top. His talent is second to none. |

At the very least, if he is not their choice, for whatever reason they might give, they should at least give either Broadway's current Phantom, Thomas James O'Leary or the longest running Broadway Phantom, Davis Gaines, the role. These men are at least identified with the role and KNOW the part. The current rumored choice of Antonio Banderas is ridiculous....I can't understand a word he says...I certainly would not buy a ticket at the theatre nor would I purchase a video for home viewing. |

Ciolfi Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Las Vegas, Nevada Time: 1998-07-23 11:21:01 Comments: I would just like to say that I love Antonio Banderas, but he is not the Phantom. For one reason, the Phantom can not have a Spanish accent. I am sorry. I know he is in France, but the British accent just sounds sooo much better. Okay, that sounds like a stupid reason, but seriously, there is only one Phantom and everyone in the world knows that. I went with my mother and sister to see Michael Crawford recently here in Las Vegas, and the sheer magnitude of his voice was so breathtaking. When he sings "Music of the Night", you just sit there and realize that this song was written for his voice and his alone, whether or not Lloyd Webber intended it. However, if there is absolutely no possible way to get Michael Crawford for the movie, my vote is for that other "Evita" alumni, Jonathan Pryce. Think about it, I mean he is a Tony-winning Broadway musical veteran, we know he can sing, and he is a magnificant actor. Who better (but Michael) to get to play the Phantom? Oh, what about the other important characters, like Christine and Raoul and especially Carlotta?? They are every bit as important as the Phantom. Please don't tell me they are going to get some mediocre wannabe movie star to play the great divas of the Paris Opera house! However, for the record, I think that Kate Winslet would make a great Christine. No, this is not some misguided devotion to "Titanic" we are talking about here, I saw her a long time ago in "Heavenly Creatures" and she was singing a passage from "La Boheme" pretty well, so with some training I think she could do it. If anyone else has any suggestions (no, I still think Sarah is getting too old to do it justice) please contact me. Thanks for listening...Raven Ciolfi |

Not only does he embody the spirit of that role, he IS the Phantom. For me, no other could play such a noble part as well as Mr. Crawford. And having either Sarah Brightman or Dale Christian as Christine would just add to the movies appeal. |

I was suppossed to go see The Phantom of the Opera in Chicago with my High School Band on April 25th. Unfortunately, my brother was getting married in Reno on the very same day, so I had to miss my 1st chance of seeing it. To make up for it, my mom bought me the Original Cast Recording CD last Wednesday. WOW!! I have never heard a man more perfect for his role, never heard such emotion and despair and astounding passion. I cried for almost an hour after listening to the whole thing in bed that night. I've never dreamed that this musical could be so awesome. My eyes are swelling with tears right now. When Michael sings "The Music of the Night", and "All I Ask of You"........I can't help but pour out my emotions like he does. Honestly, one of the most enjoyous experiences I've ever had, and I've never even seen the musical. I wouldn't dream of putting anybody but that Angel of Music in the Phantom's role. I'll go see that movie 20 times, only if he's in it, though. "Come, you must return.........those many fools at Warner Brothers might be missing you......." Pure genius, Michael, pure genius.......... |

From: United States-South East Time: 1998-07-22 08:39:49 Comments: **************************************************** This is an informational editorial comment regarding the following entry. Although we try not to censor our entries, we did want to clarify one thing. Michael Crawford has NOT turned down the movie. In fact, if you go back to the welcome page and read his comments in articles printed in "The St. Petersburg Times," the "Palm Beach Post" and "The Washington Post" (dated 7/12/98), you'll find that Michael seems very willing (one might even say eager) to re-create his magnificent performance for the silver screen. We simply wanted to make sure that the following entry did not lead to the misapprehension that Michael does not want to do the movie. If you have any questions, please go back and read the aforementioned articles for yourself. Thank you. ******************************************** Hello all... I have been viewing a lot of e-mail and web sites about the upcoming "Phantom of the Opera" movie. Many are very angry with Antonio Banderas supposedly starring in the title role. Everyone wants Michael Crawford to star. I must say, I agree with all of you. But, what if Michael turned down the role. He's not as young as he used to be, and he is recovering from hip surgery. I read in the newspaper that he is going on tour as a way to show that he still is the "original Michael Crawford" who loves theatre. But, as many of us know, you can't do a lot of thing you did when you get older. Now, I'm not speaking from Michael's point-of-view, and I might be totally wrong, but we can't keep hanging onto Michael because we, the public, do not know the facts. I must admit, that Banderas playing the Phantom would be completely ironic because the Phantom is supposed to be French, and Banderas definatly has a Spanish accent (or something like it). I would want nothing more than to see Michael Crawford on the silver screen playing the role he originated, but we can't complain because we might be missing the facts. Things will unravel as time goes by. But, I have thought about who I would cast in the movie for all the title roles. I know by posting this, I will be up for some debate, but that's half the fun! Feel free to e-mail me. FR0LL0's Choices for the lead roles in the movie "The Phantom of the Opera" The Phantom of the Opera-(if not Michael Crawford) Thomas James O'Leary. This man has played the Phantom on national tours and played him on Broadway. His voice is a breath of fresh air. Christine Daae- Kelli Rabke. This young woman played the Narrator is "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" just before it left Broadway. She starred opposite Michael Damian. She hit these notes in the stratesphere! I have doubts the Sarah Brightman would do the role. Mme. Giry- Carol Channing. A bit of type casting, I believe. Meg Giry- Lea Thompson. She seems like the little, meek, Dorothy-Gale-from-Kansas-type, and seems to have a voice on her. M. Andre-Daniel Davis ("Niles" on TV's "The Nanny") This guy can sing! He is very amusing, which is very much needed with the managers. M. Firmin-Martin Short. This, in my humble opinion, will bring in a celebrity profile which is what they are looking for with Banderas. Granted, Martin Short isn't Antonio Banderas, but he seems to be well liked, and would fit this role. Carlotta-Patti LuPone. She proved herself to Sir Webber in "Evita" on the stage, and is the diva type, as shown on the 1998 Broadway Tony Awards. I hope you enjoy my casting, and I look foreward to hearing from you all. Warm regards, FR0LL0 |

I think that after all of the money & sucess that he has brought to their production; that this should account for something! There is no one that can project the Phantom vocally or dramatically other than Michael Crawford. I have seen other actors try, but it is not the same show. He'll make you cry every time! I also can't believe the ignorance of Warner Bros. for believing that anyone can play this role. I also feel that they have not obviously read the libretto of the show; because I clearly states that the Phantom is a father figure towards the Christine character! How can Mr. Crawford be too old!! I saw Michael Crawford's concert last night and I must say (again) that there is no other man who can play the Phantom the way he was meant to be. When Michael returned to the stage he was the Phantom in every sense of the word, from his clothes (he changed into a tuxedo), to his voice, to his hands, to the emotions that exuded from him that I felt 5 rows away from him, and that the people in the last row must have also felt. I could only imagine how wonderful it would have been to see him on stage in a performance of The Phantom of the Opera. I truely hope that WB and RUG get their heads on straight and allow Michael to give the fans their one true Phantom. Keep up the fight! Yours truely - Sheri |

Anyone else is just a stand-in. I was elated at the thought of a POTO movie until I heard someone else is being considered as the Phantom. I won't see the movie unless Michael Crawford is playing the title role! P.S. It would also be wonderful to have Sarah Brightman playing Christine, but I will see Michael Crawford singing opposite anyone else! |

I believe that he should indeed be cast in the "Phantom of the Opera" film. To give the role to anyone else would be a big mistake. Crawford is a superb actor and singer, and judging by the ladies of all ages he numbers among his fans, he certainly is not too old! D. B. |

What are they thinking???? I could barely get through Evita with him. Apparently they want someone who will bring in the younger audience. well, I am 23 and I still don't know what they are thinking. If anything, Antonio will more likely push me away from seeing it. For years there have been rumors about Michael and Sarah taking THEIR parts and bringing them onto the screen. Now I am not looking forward to it in the least bit. If Michael Crawford is not cast, then it would have been better to cancel the whole project. And what about the role of Christine? Without Michael, there should be no Sarah. Putting Antonio and Sarah together is like mixing fire and ice. On a scale of 1 to 10, her performance would be a 20, whereas Banderas would be lucky to score a 1 next to her. Strong, powerful, moving roles need strong, powerful, and moving performers. Sarah and Michael are that ticket. So wake up!!! |

The Phantom's(Mr.Crawford's)voice is what the last thing I hear before I fall asleep. Whenever I am upset,or lonely, I play "Music of the Night", and his voice, combined with the lyrics calms me. I suggest to anyone considering Antonio Banderas for the role to just listen to the CD. Listen to what the Phantom is saying, and just think: If Michael Crawford didn't exist, the Phantom would have never existed. They are one in the same person. If you split them apart, giving Antonio the role, who knows what will become of the Phantom? Or the musical? As a devoted fan to the Phantom of the Opera, I am doing all I possibly can to prevent Mr.Crawford from losing his role. I hope that if you find it in your hearts to do so, you will do the same. He opened the Play in London, Broadway, and Los Angeles, all to huge audiences. He is the only actor to have ever won a Tony for this part. Right now Michael is on a 35 city tour of the USA if you can get tickets go hear and see for yourselves his voice and actions. After seeing and hearing there will be no question that he is the best to play this part. Warner Exec's you will be making a big FINANCIAL mistake if you cast anyone other to this role, this movie will be flop without him and it will bring in more dollars than Titanic with him. |

I believe that he may even be able to discover new depths to the character, now that he has matured and been able to sing thousands of different variations of the songs of the Phantom of the Opera score since the late 80's. These are just my two cents. |

Accent or no accent, Antonio Banderas does not have the tonal quality suited for the role, nor has he shown the ability needed to perfrom the vocal range required. I understand that they need a big name for the role - Warner Bros. just does not realize they are letting the biggest name slip right out from under them! If anything, Mr. Crawford has earned the role, and the movie will probably never reach its full potential without Mr. Crawford as the Phantom. |

I saw him on Dave Letterman last night, had to turned it off after 5 minutes, he was so bad, the thought of him playing phantom made me sick. What is wrong with ALW and Warners?? Are you blind and deaf? I can't believe they really think Antionio is the perfect person for the role. Don't you know all the fans want Michael Crawford to be the phantom? |
| Name: Don Gibbs Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Omaha, NE Time: 1998-07-16 10:54:38 Comments: Presumably the possible casting of Antonio Banderas has to do with age and assumed box office value. Having seen him sing on the Andrew Lloyd Webber 50th birthday bash, I have to say I was quite impressed and feel he would do an excellent job in the film. However, the age of the Phantom isn't that important, and Michael Crawford in his mid-fifties still looks great, if slightly heavier than he was in his forties. The main point is that Michael was brilliant onstage and would be in the film. He is now a widely known star throughout the world, and he'd likely win the Oscar, which would increase his recognition even more. The film should be a major hit, if done well, and the box office potential shouldn't really depend on who the star of the film is. I'm all for Michael Crawford because he is a superb actor and singer and the best person for the role. Wouldn't Gypsy and Hello, Dolly! have been better films with Merman and Channing? Who will be Christine??????? I vote for John Barrowman for Raoul. Anyone who has seen him in such shows as Miss Saigon and Sunset Blvd. in London will understand why. |

I have nothing personal against him, but I saw him in Evita and I can't see how he can do a better job than Michael Crawford. His voice is okay, but it doesn't have the quality necessary to do justice to the Phantom's songs. He also looks Hispanic, which conflicts with the Phantom being French. I really don't understand. Amongst people I know, Michael Crawford is a much bigger star. I believe the movie would make a lot more money with Crawford, because he has the type of fans who will see it multiple times, buy the soundtrack & other merchandise, & buy the video. It will also be considered "art" rather than another stupid action movie. Are they already trying to remake Zorro by casting the same actor in a different mask? It doesn't make any sense! |
| Name: Pat Donovan Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Buckeye State Time: 1998-07-15 20:29:05 Comments: First, I saw Crawford in concert for the first time two weeks ago. I was amazed at the transformation he makes when he sings/plays the Phantom. He shows such respect for the role. Just before he sang the "Phantom of the Opera" with Dale Kristien he had completely changed his clothes from a sport jacket to a tuxedo. His facial expressions and body movements underwent a total metamorphosis. You could actually visualize the mask on his face. He really becomes the character before your eyes without props. So, Warners, why mess with such perfection and dedication? Second, I just saw the promos for "Zorro". Finally, a Spaniard playing the role! To my dismay, I couldn't understand a word Mr. Banderas said and I wanted to see this movie. Yikes! I didn't realize his accent is so strong. This would definitely not work well for the role of the Phantom. Also, he is too young for the part. Christine would have to be played by a 12 year old! As someone mentioned before, why would the Phantom be tanned if he lives in the dark below the Opera House? I won't even go into the singing required for this role. However, I do know that you can't just stop smoking, work out a little, take singing lessons for a couple of months, and suddenly be able to sing opera (duh). |

The mere consideration of another phantom to replace the person which has mastered that character is preposterous. The capabilities of Michael Crawford far exceed those of the current silver screen actors.
