Comments: i got a cassette tape of the phantom of the opera 11 years ago. until now i
never stopped listening to this classic musical. i have never heard of any
other actor whose voice is so haunting as his. i believe that it is only
michael crawford who can give justice to the role of the phantom. and for
me, it is michael crawford or nothing.

Comments: I am a fan of theater and musicals. Being a fan, I support the arts and the performances of the very best actors and actresses in the world today and visit the theater whenever my pocketbook allows.

We are about to lose this one folks. And frankly I don't care who owns the rights or who stands to make a bloody fortune. I only know that when I place my bottom firmly in the seats to see the film I expect to watch a movie that is a faithful adaptation of the stage play.

Andrew Lloyd Webber. Are you thinking straight and have you given any thought at all to the fact that the people who love this play the most are the ones who will be complaining the loudest? Get a grip man, you may be a lord but you are about to lose any shred of respect we hold for you. Cast Michael now before it's too late.

Very unhappy in Cleveland,
Lisa

Comments: If a couple of companies are going to risk millions of dollars to make a film of a successful stage property, why take a bigger risk by changing the very element that made the property so successful in the first place, the actor who played the title role.

The whole point of this campaign is to ensure that Michael Crawford takes his rightful place as the title character in the permanant record of the most profitable stage musical of all. He did all the work in laying the foundation and characterization that other actors have attempted to re-create. If you've ever seen copies of a Xerox of a photo of a Xerox, you'll notice that for every generation removed, the picture gets less and less dicernable. The same is true of actors who have the problem of trying to recreate a roll. It's a copy of a copy of a copy. And it isn't very good.

At least when someone pays their $75 or whatever at a legitimate theater to see the play, they realize that they're seeing a 20th generation actor in the roll, and hopefully, they'll enjoy it for what it is. The stated intent of Warner Brother's announcement of doing Phantom back in 1990 was to bring exactly what people had seen on the stage to the big screen. Now that Steve Barton is gone, one third of the chemistry will be sorely missed. The most important part of the formula began as and still continues to be Michael Crawford. I realize the prejudice that movie executives have to decisions made in former regimes, but in the 1990 case, the decision was absolutely right and was cheered by fans the world over. If they don't go with Michael Crawford and the original framework of the musical, they are literally shoveling money into what the book described as the "fiery furnaces."

Quite frankly, if this film is made without Michael Crawford as the Phantom, and with major changes to the score and book, there are thousands of people who will not only refuse to pay $8 to $10 to see the film, but who will actively boycott Warner Brothers and Really Useful Group projects. I refuse to pay one penny to either of these companies ever again until Michael Crawford fulfills his contractual agreement and completes his role as the Phantom in this movie. If Michael Crawford is not the Phantom and a film is made, I will be more than happy to stand out in front of cinemas with my fellow drama students from Fullerton College and Cal State Fullerton (one of the top 10 performing arts universities in the U.S.) to do informational pickets. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Warner Bros and RUG.

Comments: Ok this is the thing. I am 18 (well on October 5th) anyway ever since i was a little girl i have always heard about the famous play Phantom of The Opera, and dreamed of seeing it on Broadway in NY. Well that dream came true. I saw it when Howard McGillin was the Phantom and still is and i still would like to write him but dont know how to reach him. Anyway i think that this movie that you are doing or thinking of doing is the BEST idea ever, but i also think that it would be great to have the original Phantom Michael Crawford playing his old role once again. When i saw the play i went out and bought the CD of the Original cast recording and fell in love with it. I know you might think "oh she's only 18 she can't possibly appreciate this music." Well in fact i think Mr.Webber is a VERY talented man. I love his music and always will. Again i think that Michael should be casted as his once breathtaking role and might i add that role is still breathtaking. The movie i hope would be just like the play no alterations no new things, because the play is what saved my life. What i mean is. Before i saw the play i wanted to so badly to study Film and Play Directing,I have dreamed of doing that since i was 7, but that dream was crushed when almost all my loved ones and friends told me i would never be able to achive that kind of career. Thats when i fell into depression, something that i have lived with for a long time, but when i saw that play i realized i can do anything i put my mind to. Many dreams of mine have been broken but now everytime i think about that night i saw that play i tell myself that i can do it, I can make my dreams come true just like Michael Crawford,Harold prince and just like Mr. Webber. I know this sounds stupid and a waste of time, but the fact is this play this upcoming movie or even the thought of making one is very important to not just people like me but to thousands of people all around the world. Almost every person i have talked to that has seen the play when Michael played the Phantom has said he was wonderful and if he acts anything like he sings...then they are right. His voice is one of the best ones i have heard in a long time. Again i love this play and wish i could read the book but i can't find the book anywhere. I know that movie directors and casting directors like to have Major named actors in their movies. But you want to know what the public thinks about when they want to cast like that with Classic plays and story lines? When you put some actor or acctress that is well known into somthing most younger people (my age) have never seen. One: the older groups think its a discrace and think it might be just another play that has been "Moderized or Updated" and Two: the younger groups will only know the movie as that movie that "one guy" or girl played in. They wont see it for what it really is. They will only see it as another movie they wont see it as a wonderful, spectacular play and story it really is. I have taken up to much of your time. But i do thank you for taking the time to read this. And again...Michael is the best way to go. Please dont take anything i have said in offence. I dont mean it that way. Thank you once again, and please give word to Mr. Webber to keep going with the plays and music, and that he is the blessing to music.Again thank you and long live The Phantom of The Opera.
Sincerly,
Megan Cowell
P.S. If you would like to contact me please write to this e-mail megsiebubbles@hotmail.com that will reach me directly. Thankyou.

Comments: This is messed up! Unless they do the ORIGINAL musical, they should not do it at all. However, if they must, at least cast a man who can actually SING WELL and not make devoted phans puke at the mere sound of Banderas's nasty little voice! Yes, I have thrown up hearing Banderas. I really did, I'm not kidding. Michael Crawford owns the mask and is rightful to wear it. However, Banderas has never even PLAYED the Phantom and sucks anyway, therefore rendering him UNWORTHY of the mask!

Comments: Hello all,
WE (Michael's/Erik's phans) ALL ABSOLUTELY LURVE AND ADORE "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" (AND Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD); We all adore the (ORIGINAL ALW) music and the (ORIGINAL ALW) story of (poor, blighted) Erik;
But alas, how you repay us,
Deny us and betray us;
keeping us STILL waiting for THE ALW "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" on video. Just imagine it, IF ONLY you HAD brought out the ALW "PHANTOM" on video, WITH Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD 11 + years ago, you would have been even wealthier, AND much sooner too.
Don't yuz all reckon by now that your public really has waited longer than long enough for this production to be brought out on video-tape? Then EVERYBODY can see it, AND enjoy it, time after time after time. This version, I know now, would certainly be MY MOST WATCHED version. Within a week, I would need to buy a new video because I would have "played it to death" by then. Come on folks!; it really is HIGH-TIME TO FINALLY GET THIS PRODUCTION UP AND RUNNING; -------- COME ON; PLEEEEEEEEEEASE GIVE US OUR "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" video, STARRING Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD, NOW!!!!
(any other will NOT be tolerated; we, your paying/viewing public will DEFINITELY NOT PURCHASE the video IF Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD is NOT CAST).
We will all really love you WHEN!!!! Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS cast in the lead role (with of course, myself cast as "Christine Daae"; well, I can dream.....)
Come on "Andy", Warner Brothers, and all else involved in this (yet-to-be-made, Ho Hum) ALW video production.
Give us who we want.

If you're all really quiet, you will hear the whole world saying (for the billionth + time) in unison
"CAST Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD AS 'ERIK, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA' IN 'THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA' ------------ NOOOOOW!!!!; PLEEEEEEEEEESE!!!! ------YOU ARE TRYING OUR PATIENCE";
"Bring out this CRAWFORD Production on video --- NOOOOOOOW". Oh oh. Eeeeek; Look up there; that chandelier is rocking extremely violently and its lights are flickering madly; HELP!!!! PLEASE~~~~~DON'T let it drop; let it quickly please become calm!!!! ---------
MICHAEL CRAWFORD as ERIK;
the chandelier will not fall and everybody will be spared,
but, if you will insist on remaining persistent in casting somebody else to wear Erik's (MICHAEL CRAWFORD's) mask, then you've obviously got a death wish. YIKES!!!!; you'd all better run now; Heeeeere comes that chandelier, dropping whizzingly fast.
Thank you all for taking the time to read my letter,
Thank you,
From:---The Phantom's Phriend.
PS:---MICHAEL CRAWFORD, MICHAEL CRAWFORD, MICHAEL CRAWFORD, MICHAEL CRAWFORD,MICHAEL CRAWFORD...............

Comments: It was about 7 days ago I found out about the Phantom Film! When I did I was so happy. I always wanted one to be made and was ever so glad! But then I read on, seeing that Antonio Banderas was to be cast. I now almost broke into tears! I have loved the Phantom since I was 2, saw it twice and its my favorite musical! I mean how, how could you betray all the Phantom Fans in the world with a Hollywood actor!?! He has a spanish acsent- good for Evita, but not for a french character!! There are 2 phantoms I would much rather see- Michael Crawford or Colm Wilkinson. Both amazing Phantoms and I grew up listening to both of them singing my favorite Phantom Songs. If this film is taken out as some horrible film with Antonio than you will not see me checking it out. If I were you i'd stick to the 1991 script! Why didn't you make that one? It sounded so good. I gaurenty this film will be a flop because many willing Phantom Fans will not see it. I heard that it will be made in the Evita style. Why aren't you doing it in a Joseph/J.C. (2000) film style. I love the look of them because they make them look like the stage versions. Please please, make the film right- with no Hollywood Actors/Actress' in leading roles! If you could let me know what you think befor August 20th it would make my 13th birthday so wonderful. So please! Make the right desicion- Michael Crawford/Colm Wilkenson as Phantom and in a stage style not extreme film style with lots of fades ect. make it like they would do it on stage.

Signed
Adam Schoales

Comments: Like countless fans of the Phantom, the Webber musical especially, I will only see the Warner Bros. film if Michael Crawford has the title role. Mr. Crawford gave that character life..."It's ME they hear..." he says to Christine, and it is true, in art and in life. For the sake of posterity Crawford simply MUST perform one last time, to be immortalized in film. I have seen the show seven times, in London, San Fransisco, Vancouver and Seattle, and still no one, not in three different countries, plays the Phantom as does Crawford. He IS the Phantom. This film can be made no other way...or at least, it won't be seen or appreciated by very many, myself included.

Comments: Antonio Banderas is not acceptable to me as the Phantom. I saw/heard him sing on the ALW Birthday Show and he was just awful. In addition to the poor quality of his voice, his inability to clearly enunciate the English lyrics is really annoying. I saw him as Che in "Evita", which was such a boring film that I left after the first hour. Who ever it was that gave Banderas the idea that he should play the Phantom should be strung up. It's blasphamy! Michael Crawford created the role, his voice is still magnificent, and he is available and interested in playing the part in the film. What other reasons do you need? If WB and ALW continue with their plans, only Banderas fans will go to see it and they will be disappointed since his pretty face will be covered in ugly make-up. Phantom fans will stay home and listen to their cherished, original cast CDs with Michael Crawford. It's really too bad because we have been waiting many years to see the film of a much-loved musical. It could be a huge success if it was done right. But the signs are ominous.

Comments: I beleive Micheal Crawford should be the Phantom because he sings with such emotion. He evokes every sound with such humanity and feeling. His cry, "Christine, Christine" goes staight to the heart. No one else can replace him. I saw Antonio Banderas ATTEMPT to play it on ALW's Celebration. AB has an accent, making him sound more like a VAMPIRE than a Phantom. PLUS his voice has gone through the ringer. Micheal Crawford is STILL going strong! Warner Brother's better pick Crawford and Brightman. It would truly make the Phantom Movie come alive!

as Raul. I've seen him TRY to sing and
act the part of the Phantom. What a joke! He is pathetic, and sounds like a
sissy!! Michael is the one and only
Phantom! If he is not cast as the Phantom, I won't go see the movie.
Michael is the man! No one else will do.

Comments: I have now seen the Phantom of the Opera play 7 times: 2 New York 3 Chicago and 2 in Nashville. It will tour again here in September. I will see it. I also have been a fan of MC through the years separate from this play. MC's talent is so strong and no one sings as well. What I will not understand is why is there a question? I heard also that this movie was in the making 1990. I wondered what happened. I am sorry that the divorce put things on hold, however, I would think the stress of that would be over by now. After all, Sarah did perform for ALW's 50th birthday bash. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford created these roles in the beginning. We are in the music business in Nashville and I understand what the art means to the artist and to writers. Let them do the movie because they have earned the right. They are a big reason for the ultimate success of this play. Who said that MC is not right for the role? He made the role come to life. Think about it. Then make the movie. Perhaps if Warner Brothers is not interested, there are plenty of other movie studios who are interested in perserving this kind of movie magic.

Comments: The thought of not casting Crawford as the Phantom is sheer madness. The fact that Warner Bros. is more worried about casting a hollywood big name is the phantom, shows that they don't care about making a good moive. If the moive studios have doubts about MC they should put them aside. Rest assured, if Michael is cast as the Phantom, the moive will be a box office smash and rant with the immortal film such as Star Wars and Gone with the Wind. I myself am a young Phantom fan, and never got the see michael on stage as the phantom, nor never will I. A phantom moive with the orignal Phantom, crawford,is a way to giving back top the fans, and give younger generations like me a chance to see Phantom as they have never seen him before. Michael Crawford is the Phantom.I suprised his middle name isn't Erik. His voice makes me cry and his jokes make me laugh. A brillant actor and a remarkable singer. Long Live Michael Crawford as the Phantom Of The Opera!!

Comments: Sir Lloyd Webber seems to be having difficulty right now making decisions so it's been simplified:

1. a) Make the movie or b) Don't make the movie
If you choose (a), then go to question 2
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

2. a) Film it now or b) Wait another 11+ years
If you choose (a), then go to question 3
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

3. a) Make money b) Lose money
If you choose (a), then go to question 4
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

4. a) Listen to the phans or b) Ignore the phans
If you choose (a), then go to question 5
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

5. a) Make minor changes to the story line or b) Make major changes to the storyline
If you choose (a), then go to question 6
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

6. a) Utilize the music from the play and add new music or b) Eliminate songs popular in the play and write all new songs
If you choose (a), then go to question 7
If you choose (b) stop - you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

7. a) Release a cast recording b) Don't release a cast recording
If you choose (a), then go to question 8
If you choose (b) stop - you lose a chance for large profits with related marketing materials

8. a) Cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom b) Cast anybody else
If you choose (a), then you win and make large profits from your wise decisions
If you choose (b) then you lose everything and everybody and have to start over - no phans, no money and generate extreme hostility

Comments: Michael Crawford's Phantom of the Opera is great theatre but only lives on in the memory of those fortunate to see the live performance. Our modern technology demands we record and preserve Phantom on film for ourselves and for future generations. If a film is made changing the music and starring Antonio Banderas then it will be second rate. You have the perfect combination with Michael Crawford as the phantom and the great story and music of Andrew Lloyd Webber -- please preserve this version for us!

Comments: Sir Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" is my most favorite one. I saw it once in Melbourne some years ago and I have been very impressed with it since then. (Although Mr. Crawford did not perform here.) I also have a few CDs of "The Phantom", but the"Highlight from the Phantom of the Opera" which I often listen to is the best. Mr. Crawford's voice is so emotional. To be honest, I have looked for the VDO or CD that officially recorded Sir Webber's version of "The Phantom" but to learned that it has never been produced. The idea to have Mr. Crawford star and sing in the movie is so excellent. Go ahead. You will definitely receive my big support.

Comments: Not only am I unable to understand how ALW could consider ANYONE other than Michael Crawford for this role, how in the world he settled on Antonio Banderas is and will always be quite beyond my my comprehension. Good luck!
