Comments: In reading the posts over the past few days, I continue to be amazed at the journalistic and poetic talent so many of you possess----wish I had some of it. I would like to share a thought that I had while reading some of the excellent, common sense reasons why MC is the only choice to play “his” Phantom.

This whole movie fiasco reminds me of the way political leaders have acted during the past several years. Instead of doing what they believe is right, or at least what they know to be the desires of the people that elected them to office, they take polls asking what the “mainstream” wants them to do. Many of these polls only check with a small cross section of persons that are unlikely to vote. The politician bases his decision on the opinions of those who would not support him anyway, thereby angering and alienating his constituents who elected him in the first place. He will be defeated in the next election and end up with nothing.

Sound familiar? It seems to me that ALW, WB or TPTB think they need to gear the movie to a “mainstream” audience that has been shown to prefer blockbusters, sex, or graphic violence, not a classic production brought to the big screen. They are discounting the millions of people who have loved and made this show this classic that it has become, thereby angering and alienating them. The audience they are targeting more than likely will not show up at box office, leaving them with a flop because the “likely voters” will not show up for an abomination of their beloved classic. The moviemakers will be defeated and end up with nothing.

Comments: Michael Crawford is more than an actor, another name on the list of people that are to be considured for the role as Phantom. He is the role. YOu don't need to take my word for it... just skim through the thousands of people that signed this and feel the very same. So please...ALW or whoever may be reading this...Open your eyes! All you need to do is listen to the OLC cd and than watch the 50th birthday celeb. (The AB parts). Then...you decide! Compare the two voices... And if you have the slightest sense you might just see what everyone who has signed this geust book already knows.

Kind Regards,

One Of The Many Many Many Phans

Comments: Although I was never fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford on stage in "The Phantom of the Opera," I have seen him in concert several times and on TV, during which he performed songs from the play. There is no actor better than Michael to perform this role. I highly recommend that you cast him for the lead in the movie version. Then his perfect interpretation of the Phantom will live on forever and so many more people will be able to enjoy and be inspired by his performance than those select groups of people who were able to see him on stage in New York, London or Los Angeles. Thank you for your consideration. I hope you will offer him this role of a lifetime.

Comments: I am 19, and too young to ever have seen Michael as the phantom. i have seen the phantom however, and as brilliant as it was the one thing that could have made it better was to have seeen Michael in the lead role. I do have the original london cast recording and it is virtually worn out, Michael is merely brilliant and he is loved Australia wide, an we Aussies are always right so without a doubt, it should be Michael who claims the lead in the movie (if it ever bloody gets done). Plus, i heard a rumour that Antonio Banderas was likely for the lead, please tell me that i heard wrong!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm 93 years old and currently visiting with my son and his wife in Michigan City, IN. I would like very much to have Mr.Crawford's next album and hope one day to attend a concert and personally meet him.

I can't imagine the movie with anyone but Michael Crawford. I have listened to his tape of phantom. The tape spoiled me to accept anyone but Michael Crawford. I would not go to see anyone but Michael. I would go anywhere in this country to see him perform. I would buy any video of poto, only if Michael were in it. He is magnificent. He has an aura about him that makes a great phantom. He has the magnetism to bring the movie to life, and make people go see it again and again. thank you

Comments: Please, please, if the casting is to be done soon then no-body can be the Phantom but Michael. I have seen him "live" three times now and the emotion in his voice is amazing. Mr Bandanas wouldn't send tingles down anyones spine???? MC is the right age for the Phanton maybe Mr. Bandanas could be Raul but then he is getting older as well. Also I read that he is going to make another Zorro movie. So then he will be busy doing that. Without MC there is no Phantom, because the Fans won't turn out to see it in the theatres, they will just wait until the video comes out.
We have a new series here in Australia called "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". Part One the other week, the Guest of Honor was Michael, he was amazing. they flew him in by helicopter over Sydney Harbour, the person who actually met him lived on a property, How lucky can she be??? and what a gentleman he was. singing outside with a grand piano. Truly MC is just the best.

Comments: Banderas is wrong for the role. The character that is the Phantom needs charm, elegance and a certain seductiveness about him, none of which appear in Banderas. Michael is the obvious choice for the role because he is so gifted at playing his part. He has a great sense of humor, has spent a great deal of time working for charities and has most wonderful voice that most phans already associate with the Phantom character. He is THE Phantom in my mind and nothing will persuade me otherwise.

Comments: Even considering anyone other than Michael for the role of the Phantom is absolute INSANITY!. The Phantom of the Opera wasn't the most popular musical because people had nothing better to do than go to the theatre. Why wasn't Grease 2 a success? Simple, because PEOPLE WANTED TO SEE OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN & JOHN TRAVOLTA!, it is the same with the Phantom...I have friends, who have listened to the CD recording with Michael in it, and been swept away, then go and see a performance of the Phantom, only to be brutally disappointed because the phantom cannot sing. I heard Antonio sing with S. Brightman...and it was a brutal and horrifying experience. I can't believe that ALW, who has done theatre, since as early as I can remember, is going to trade all that experience and magic in to capitalise on the fame of some POPSTAR! I honestly thought you were different! I can tell you, Australians love M Crawford, and although we probably don't matter to you heartless studio bigshots, we, along with many other women from other countries will NOT be going to see something that will make a mockery of the most beautiful and moving musical of all time, not to mention a mockery of the enthralling character the Phantom!. Michael is the only Phantom. Have you forgotten why he was cast as the phantom in the first place??

Therefore there should be no question that the role, which he made famous on stage, should also be his on screen. This role calls for someone with experience, elegance, and a powerful voice all of which Michael has. Need I say more?

Comments: I am writing the 2nd time around. I can't see the logical explanation of casting Mr.Banderas as the role of the Phantom. He hasn't the charisma and the charm to portray a very strong and emotional character and he hasn't the voice. Count me out of the film audience if Michael Crawford is not in it. Comments: I moved to the UK in 1990.. and since then I have made several friends who saw the original production at Her Majesty's theatre in London, UK. Each has told me about the tremendous impact Michael Crawford had in the role. I have the original cast recording and I am impressed by Michael's vocal talents. I have often wished I had been able to see him in this role.. but consoled myself with the thought that surely he would recreate the role in the movie version. This was going to be the only way I would see his creation of the Phantom. How distressing to find that he may not! My own small informal poll of some my friends here in the UK (about 10 people) all agreed that - at least in the UK - Michael's name would be a certain draw to the movie version! Please let Michael record his creation for posterity's sake!

Comments: WHY MICHAEL CRAWFORD SHOULD BE THE PHANTOM

1. Although Andrew Lloyd Webber's focus has always been on Christine, who is on stage 90% of the time; the audience's focus is on the Phantom who is only on stage for 25 minutes. He makes the difference as to whether the show moves people to tears or leaves them talking about the falling chandelier and wondering what all the fuss is about. Bad Phantom = Bad Show. Nobody else makes a difference. Crawford's Phantom was so extraordinary that people slept on the sidewalks to get tickets. Tickets were scalped for thousands of dollars. Reviewers wore out their thesaurus searching for new ways to describe perfection. Other actors acted the role with more or less success. Crawford BECAME the Phantom.

2. Michael Crawford would be a bigger draw in that role than anyone else you could put in it. The audience that likes musicals is more sophisticated than the average audience. They are more interested in seeing the original than some pale imitation. Crawford is as associated with that role in the public mind as Julie Andrews was with Eliza. People who didn't get to see him on stage want that experience. For Hollywood to think that the audience is so stupid that it needs a "Hollywood name" (whose movies seem to bomb with great regularity) to draw people to the show is an insult.

3. The role requires an extraordinary voice. Crawford has it. His diction is impeccable; you can understand every word. But not only that; he has the ability to get to the truth of a song and make you feel the emotion in a way only a handful of singers can. That's the key to the show. If you have an actor who is hard to understand or whose voice can't touch the soul, then you might as well forget it.

4. Whoever plays the role is going to be compared to Crawford by both the audience and the reviewers. Over 20,000,000 OCRs have been sold. The people are going into that movie with THAT voice in their heads. You might as well have it on the screen or you're going to have a lot of disappointed people buzzing.

5. With Crawford you have a PR bonanza. THE ORIGINAL STAR; THE FANS' CHOICE. With Banderas you have a disaster. There is NO support for him on any POTO or musical board. Even his own fans aren't enthusiastic about it. His appeal is his looks which would be covered up with make-up and a mask unless you are planning on totally destroying the show. The very people who should be most enthusiastic about the movie are totally turned off. Instead of having a potential audience of excited Phantom fans you have a bunch of angry, disillusioned people who feel that Hollywood has kicked them in the teeth. Making movies is risky enough without needlessly antagonizing your target audience.

Comments: I was touched by the beauty of Michael's voice at the age of six when I recieved the full recording of the original cast. Since i have heard rumor of the movie being made, it would be more then just an unjustice to not cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom, it simply would not be the Phantom of the Opera!! When I turned twelve I saw the show for the first time, singing every one of the Phantom's songs. Of course it didn't have Michael as the Phantom, and still today, I protest that it is not the same. He makes the show what it is, a masterpiece. The grace he brought the show is uncomparible to anything. I only hope that if there is a show that the producers make the only decision they can make, cast Michael!

Then I began to research his career and after listening to his album MC performs the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber which has most of the songs from "Phantom" I became interested in the story and I mean Phantom of the Opera and borrowed the book from the library and wanted to know more about Michaels portraial of the Phantom. I don't really know anything about this campaign but I would like to ask a question. I guess when he did the part he did it on stage and I was wondering if there is a copy of that show on video and if so where can I purchase a copy ?

Thanks so very much !

Warm Regards,
Marian

Hi Marian,
There are no legal copies of the musical available for purchase unfortunately. From what we have been told, there will not be a video released while Warner Bros. hold the film rights. Mr. Crawford was about to star in the Phantom film in 1991. We are working here to convince Warner Bros. and Andrew Lloyd Webber to return to their original plan, and film the musical movie version with integrity towards the original as advertised in 1990.

Not the best of news for a new fan.

Thank you so much for your message of support. Please write to the companies concerned to express your desires as a consumer.
Best wishes,

Comments: I can't imagine seeing or hearing POTO without Michael Crawford in it. Nothing sounds right, and even during the ALW Birthday tape, Banderas slaughtered the music and the graceful hand motions which Michael is so good at. I pray that we have the TRUE Phantom. Otherwise, it's simply not worth seeing or buying.

Comments: I've just discovered this website and I cannot believe that Warners and Lloyd Webber are even thinking of casting anyone but Crawford. A Phantom Of The Opera movie WITHOUT Michael Crawford as the Phantom? Don't make me laugh!!! It's about time these movie people started living in the real world.

Keep up the good and essential work!

Comments: I had always rested easy in the fact that no film studio would be stupid enough to cast anyone other than the original and only Phantom, Micheal Crawford as the lead in a full length feature film. However, when I heard rumors of Antonio Banderas starring in the film I became very worried. Don't be stupid Warner Bros., Cast Crawford and just his name alone on the bill will bring in people if that's what they are so worried about. If somehow they consider the integrity of the musical then cast the person with the best vocal ability for the role and whose voice is what has set the standard for the performance of the music.

Comments: On June 17, 2001, I was reading the Sunday edition of the San Francisco Chronicle Datebook and I found an article headlined "Genres Never Really Die". It was about the musical and western genres, both of them which always kept coming back albeit in different forms. The article also mentioned Evita and the POTO movie. Here's an excerpt below:

"The last up-front movie musical -- from Broadway to Hollywood, that is -- was Alan Parker's version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita" in 1996. With Madonna in the title role, it did not do well at the box office.

"Another Lloyd Webber would-be movie musical blockbuster is "Phantom of the Opera," which has been in the works at Warner Bros. for more than a decade. Originally envisioned as a 1992 release, perhaps with original stage stars Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, "Phantom" is still going through the planning stages.

"Crawford seems no longer in the running, and disappointed fans devote Web sites to his lost cause. John Travolta's name was floated for the title role and then was superseded, apparently, by Antonio Banderas. He had played Che Guevara to Madonna's Evita and appeared at the 50th birthday gala in London for Lloyd Webber, which was shown on PBS in the United States."

My thoughts: I know that Michael has not been ruled out in the running for the role and I hope ALW will let MC reprise his legendary role on screen for posterity's sake. If MC is given a bedanged small role in the flim, expect a lot of ranting from critics and fans. On the genres that are still alive and kicking, I was a bit surprised the genres are still going on. I haven't watched a lot of TV or movies lately but it's good to hear they are still alive. However, I think what really makes the genres coming back are director, script, and above all casting. If ALW does cast MC as the Phantom, the musical genre would be truly back on its feet.
If not, 3 letters: DOA.

Comments: Hey there folks;
PLEASE-----STOP EVERYTHING;
Stop Everything that you are currently doing and think; think good and hard; think of what you really are doing with the "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" Video Production;
[1] a different "phantom"??????????
[2] completely different music??????????
As has already been said many times before, to which I fully agree, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"; When you're on a good thing, stick to it.
PLEASE-----DO NOT CHANGE A SINGLE THING with this forthcoming?????????? Video of the beautiful Andrew Lloyd-Webber "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" Production {unless of course, I could be cast as "Christine Daa'e", WITH Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD, cast naturally and definitely as "ERIK, THE PHANTOM"};
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE-----GIVE Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD, "MY PHANTOM", THE ROLE OF "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA"; IT IS RIGHTFULLY Mr. CRAWFORD'S ROLE AFTER ALL {It's not a good idea to provoke "Erik"; He will drop another chandelier; this time, on you}; AND PLEASE LEAVE THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AS IT HAS BEEN BEAUTIFULLY ORIGINALLY WRITTEN.
The very idea of giving The Phantom's mask to somebody else other than Mr. Michael Crawford is completely baffling to us, your viewing, paying public, and to completely rewrite the music for the Video Production is just unbelievable; WHY do you feel a need to completely cut out the original AAAND BEST music, AAAND the original AAAND BEST PHANTOM?????????? WHY??????????
This is preposterous; it will be an absolute, utter sacrilege without MICHAEL and the original music.
PLEASE ANDREW LLOYD-WEBBER, WARNER BROTHERS, AND ALL INVOLVED WITH THIS {forthcoming??????????} "PHANTOM" VIDEO PRODUCTION; MAKE THIS PLANET THE ENVY OF ALL OTHER PLANETS IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM-----MICHAEL CRAWFORD AS "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" IN "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" VIDEO;
then "life on all other planets" will be lining up for a "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" Video too, WITH Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter;
Thank you all,
Jaime, The Phantom's Phriend, has spoken;
Jaime Dawn Crawford.
