Found this in a book on Audrey Hepburn.
"My Fair Lady was a visual feast and triumph of a film for moviegoers although it
handed Audrey a personal defeat....Higgins and Doolittle were brought to life [on stage]
by Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. Producer Jack Warner, however, wanted neither for his
movie, preferring big box office stars instead. Ultimately he settled for Rex Harrison
only after Cary Grant and Peter O'Toole turned him down. Audrey, who longed to play Eliza
Doolittle, got her wish for a cool $1 million. But Alan Jay Lerner, among many in
Hollywood, was shattered by Warner's decision to snub Julie Andrews."
It goes on to say that years later Audrey herself admitted she was unconvincing in the
first part of the film.
"The onscreen Eliza is depressed and fearful after the ball mirroring what Audrey
herself felt....When Hollywood learned that Audrey's voice had been dubbed resentment
mounted against her.
Ironically Julie Andrews won the Best Actress category, ostensibly for her role in Mary
Poppins, but everyone knew this was the Academy's way of trying to acknowledge the
rightful Eliza Doolittle." |
