Comments: I have loved POTO for years and was never fortunate enough to see Michael in the role. I do have the CD's of Michael's Phantom and listen to it all the time. I have waited for years to see him do the role on the big screen and was so distraught to find that he was not considered. The role belongs to him and him alone. I will go to see the movie only if Michael is Erik. ALW promised him the role years ago...what happened??? I hope our voices here are heard in Hollyweird...Forever a PhantomPhan... Debbie :)

Comments: Hello ! Ever since i first heard The Phantom of the Opera on tape, i became very interested in the person who played the phantom : michael crawford. i thought that he was very talented and had a splendid and beautiful voice. sometimes i wish that i could go back in time to the late '80s to see the show in new york city. when i heard that a phantom movie was in the works, i was very happy. i thought that crawford would be cast without a doubt since many people connect the phantom with him. i think it would be unfortunate if crawford didn't get the part of the phantom because he is not a widely - known film star. crawford is obviously talented enough and has had much experience in film, theater, radio and television. if crawford was cast for the part of the phantom i think the film would be a great success ! thanks for reading my lengthy letter !

Comments: I arriven in London in 1987 and took a working/holiday. While working I would pass the Theater where Phantom played with the original Cast. Being from Canada, I have seen most of Michael Crawford's early comedy work. I loved him. After hearing all the rave reviews of the show, I wanted to go so badly. However, my father passed away, suddenly, and I returned to Canada, never seeing Michael as the Phantom. I wish I could turn back the clock. I listen to the soundtrack constantly!. I can't imagine any other man for the movie roll. Even though we can't turn back the clock, perhaps I can still have a chance to see him as the Phantom. Best of luck in this truly meaningful cause.

Comments: To me there is only one Phantom and that is Michael Crawford. Someone else would be a poor example. If Michael is not in the movie, the movie would not be worth going to because whoever is the Phantom (if it is not MC), would be a fake one. L ike the song goes - ain't nothing like the real thing. And the real thing is MC.

Comments: Yesterday Michael performed at Chastain Park here in Atlanta. The local paper, the ATlanta Jour nal/Constitution was entirely devoid of any advertising for this show. Guess what happened? People found out in spite of the newspaper and the outdoor theater was 90% full, only the seats in the very back were empty. I have NEVER been to a performance that had standing ovations in the middle of the concert!! ANd, guess which songs? Yes, those from Phantom. People love Michael as the Phantom because he IS The Phantom!! Warner BRothers, if you want a successful movie that will live forever cast Michael. I know the bottom line is money, money, money, but this is your way of making money AND pleasing the public. Hey "bosses" go to one of the concerts, see for yourself!

Comments: I think this movie would be a flop if it didn't have the Phantom in it.Who is the Phantom? Michael Crawford,of course! It would be wrong not to have Michael in the movie because he is the Phantom. He is the heart and soul as well as the voice of the tortured heartbroken Phantom. Michael's portrayl of the Phantom is simply breathtaking where I hardly know where the Phantom stops and Michael begins, since he puts so much of himself into the character of the Phantom. He has the ability to make us believe the Phantom is not a cold-blooded monster but a man just as human as the rest of us who only wanted to love and be loved in return.I implore you to please consider Michael Crawford for the movie role of the Phantom because he is the man behind the mask, the heart, the voice and the spirit of the Phantom. Ina

Comments: I'm somewhat new to this so do bare with me... I love the plot and music of the Phantom of the Opera, I have also seen Michael Crawford in concert... or at least on tape :) By these I have come to believe that the role of the Phantom would be best played by Michael Crawford himself. I wish nothing but luck to those who are fighting for Michael and I do wish them a succesful mission! :)

Comments: I would very much like to see Michael Crawford perform the role of The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster movie-musical... Crawford is the reason for the Tony awards that the show won in 1988 and he should be given the chance to act the part again on the silver screen.Joel Grey was not a famous film actor but his role in the movie of Cabaret gave him an Academy Award and the same challenge should be given to Mr.Crawford. he may not be a big selling star like the people that are up for the role but I would not want to see an untalented person take on my favorite Broadway role. If Banderas gets the part, he would be giving ALW a bad casting reputation. First off, Phantom is not spanish (not racist- its truth) and second, he was already in Evita- its time for Michael to come on back. GIve him a shot. Thank you.

Comments: Yes, I know already signed this guestbook once but I just had to add something after what I saw today. Did anyone else see the ridiculous performance by Antonio Banderas on The Rosie O'Donnell Show today? I have never wasted my time by seeing one of his movies so this was my first opportunity to observe him. I easily came to the conclusion that Banderas is a complete fool. Why does Warner Bros. think he is so great? Of course, ALW thinks Banderas is perfect; after all, Banderas has shamelessly buttered and lobbied ALW for the Phantom role. I had hoped to find something about Banderas that would redeem him for the Phantom. Unfortunately, I could only find him tacky and totally tasteless. What was with all those little head jerks he kept doing? Do we really need a Phantom that looks like he belongs in the barnyard pecking with the rest of the chickens? Michael Crawford wouldn't be caught dead making movements like that on camera, especially while discussing Phantom. I hope someone comes to their senses before it's too late. Banderas as the Phantom--what a joke!

Comments: I find it completely obsurd that they are considering anyone beside Michael Crawford to perform the role that he does so perfectly. Everyone who has ever seen him perform raves about how wonderful he is, and anyone who never got to see him in Phantom (me included) regrets missing one of the world's greatest performances. Crawford still sings as beautifully as he did 12 years ago (maybe even better) and seems interested in the project, so why even consider Antonio Banderas? They're trying to make the movie into a joke instead of an artistic masterpiece. I know many people who would be excited to see Crawford in the movie (and you know Phantom fans spend lots of money on merchandise as well as seeing the movie multiple times). I don't know anyone excited about Banderas, except maybe ALW.

Comments: I saw Phantom last year in Toronto because I was already obsessed with it after listening to the original cast recording. When I heard whoever was playing the phantom sing *Can't remembers his name right now!* I just laughed because he didn't sound good!! Michael Crawford was the original Phantom and should play him in the movie, not John or Antonio!

Comments: I saw Phantom of the Opera for the first time in March of '98. I must admit, I never really showed any interest in it at first, but after I saw the play on Broadway...I was in love. Even though the Phantom I saw wasn't Michael Crawford, I bought the soundtrack and have been listening to it ever since...until just recently my car got broken into and that CD happened to be one of many taken from me. So today I still sing that whole CD in my head everywhere I go, because Mr. Crawford has an exceptional voice, and the Phantom of the Opera is one musical that can never be topped!!! Long live the Phantom!!! Long live Michael Crawford!!!

Comments: The entry by this person is from a separate campaign and is in no way affiliated with The Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign or this web site. Every person has the right to their own opinion, however this campaign was started in support of Michael Crawford starring in the movie Phantom. This page is not her fault, we have no prior knowledge of this person, but is the fault of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros. for backhanding Michael Crawford who was contracted and partly filmed this movie in 1991. We the members of the Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign feel Michael Crawford should star in this film version of the play to ensure that it lives on as a classic and a work of art for future generations. The Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign *********************************************************************************************** Please, I am begging you. I have been repauled by this movie since well over a year ago. I was extremly active in capain work and getting John Travolta out of the picture. I wrote to the Warner Studio itself several times pleading, and often, demanding that there be no movie made. It is simply terrifying at what has happened since I quit. You see, I became active in a lot of classes and such and didn't have much or any time to get on the net. Before I would visit sites everyday, encorage people by directly e-mailing those that had signed the campaign and signing several different pages and much much more. All in all a very tedious task, I can assure you, but I had the time then. This is the first time I have been on in months and I am horrified that anyone should be in this movie. I am even more frightened that this page is my fault. I was very active in the campaign and left my name only as "Christine Daae". Well, I didn't want Michael Crawford, John Trovolta or Antonio Bandaras in this movie. There should not be one at all! The Phantom is a classic. Screen is dead. There are no feelings as in theatre or literature. Just cheesy actors who slept with directors. If you care anything of Erik and you have the time, please, Erik, I and his true friends beg of you: Devote that free time into stopping the movei, not getting Michael Crawford or anyone else to star in it. No one can make it good on screen. Help save real theatre. As myself and fellow actors know, it is fading to comparison of the "silver screen".

Comments: HI! Michael Crawford is the only one to be the Phantom. His voice is so wonderful and his hand movements are amazing. I am only 11 years old and I love him. He is my Hero. And Andrew Lloyd Webber shouldn't be allowed to take away all our hopes and dreams just like that. Michael is our Phantom. He cares and well, he is just our man. You can't beat the best. Andrew said he was too old. Michael is only two of three years older than Andrew! Antonio is not right for this part. He is wonderful as Zoro, but not as the Phantom of the Paris Opera house! WHat is Andrew thinking. If this movie comes out with Bandaros in it, Antoinio will be known as the true Phantom and not the man who started it. If only Andrew would visit this awesome site he might listen to reason. If any of you people suporting Michael through this all the way have any idea of what a Idohan can do please feel free to e-mail me. Or if you just want to talk about Michael (the one true Phantom) TaTa

Comments: Recently saw Michael Crawford's concert on PBS--fantastic! I've seen the stage version of Phantom several times, but never was fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford in the role. However, in watching the concert on TV, when he sang "Phantom of the Opera" with Dale Kristien, it was amazing to see him become transformed---facial expression, body language, attitude, gestures---into the Phantom. No one else could do the role justice. I hope Warner Bros. wakes up to this simple truth in time to save the movie and their reputation. A mistake like this could cost them big time. None of us die-hard Phantom fans will pay to see a less-than-perfect Phantom, but all of us will pay---again and again---to see Michael Crawford in the role.

Comments: Michael is one of the driving forces behind the resurrection of the musical today! He is known all over the world for the Phantom. You can talk to someone who has no idea who he is and just say "Oh he played the Phantom" and they instantly say - oh he is amzing. For all that I liked Antonio Bandaras in Evita (A role that he played to perfection) he is a little young for the tourtured genius of a man who has had to survive on his own wits. Madam Giry makes the comment that "Years ago a travelling show came to town" she was a young girl then - and he was a man - it follows then that he should be in his 40's-50's now. Please let our Phantom sing with the voice of a "Master Showman"

Comments: Nothing against Banderas or any of the fine actors who have portrayed Erik the Phantom on stage, but Michael Crawford has gone further than anyone else to embody the Phantom's soul. He created the Phantom, he slowly and gently explored the Phantom, he worked to make sure that every atom of the Phantom's being was clear to audiences, and he's avoided seeing other Phantom actors so that his Phantom was purely Erik. I also believe that in LA, when he was announced for the film, he consciously worked at making the characterization 100 percent complete and very very subtle, which would be appropriate for the camera. You can't fool the camera, and Crawford has nothing to hide--his Phantom IS the Phantom; his voice IS the Phantom's voice, his accent IS the Phantom's accent. And his age IS the Phantom's age. He alone would give the film honesty, reality, theatricatlity, and soul. Please--someone, anyone in power--tell Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Brothers that if they want a film that resonates with audiences and critics, that the public will accept as authentic, it MUST star Michael Crawford. Comments: As a devoted fan to the musical production, I refuse to see a Hollywood name take Mr.Crawford's role away from him! I have already passed out the addresses of The Really Useful Group as well as Warner Bros. to many of my peers in my high school. I am only seventeen years old, yet, as an aspiring, young actress, I am determined to make it to Broadway! However, if Hollywood gives away Mr. Crawford's role of the Phantom to some overpaid, undeserving actor, who knows what will become of the musical? My dream is to someday have the honor of playing the role of Christine Daae, and if the stage show dissolves because of Hollywood, I will have nothing else to dream of! Please, I beg of anyone reading this, PLEASE do not support a Hollywood celebrity! You know who the real Phantom wants to portray him, and I know for a fact that it is not Antonio Banderas or Mr. Saturday Night Fever!!! Listen to your hearts, listen to the Phantom's requests, and follow this campaign. Just remember this: "You will curse the day you did not do, all that the Phantom asked of you!!!" Comments: Michael Crawford is the only actor/singer qualified to ' bring the Phantom to the screen. Casting anyone else is that role would be a disgrace. I have loved Lloyd Webber's musical version of this story for years, and have seen the stage show several times. However, I would NEVER consider supporting (with my time and money) a film version in which Crawford was not the Phantom. And I am not alone. I personally know many people who enjoyed "Phantom" because of Crawford's electrifying performance in the lead role. I know they would not be enticed to see a film version without Crawford. I think it would be in WB's best interest to reconsider this casting decision.

Comments: Michael Crawford has long been acknowledged as the definitive Phantom - the definitive Phantom is so obviously the first choice for the film. So why go for anyone else - it is illogical. The other actors suggested for the part may have good voices - may be good actors, but they can never be the Phantom Michael Crawford has given us - the voice, the charisma and the depth of emotion. They will always be regarded as pale imitations. And why have an imitation when you can have the real thing?

Comments: I fell in love with the music of the Phantom of the Opera with Michael Crawford singing it. He was my first Phantom ... After a long awaited period of anticipation, I saw the stage show of the Phantom at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. Michael Crawford had retired as Phantom, so I was not able to see him. I was terribly disappointed in the production. I can't imagine anyone other than Michael Crawford playing the Phantom in the movie. I was aware that the movie was even under "construction," far less that they are thinking of casting someone else. To the powers that be: Anyone other than Michael Crawford will be a disappointment. PLEASE don't even consider it!

Comments: I was appalled when my father told me that he heard the "choices" for the actor to play The Phantom in the movie... John Travolta, Nicholas Cage or Antonio Banderas???? What are they thinking? There is one and only one man who can truely be The Phantom and that is Michael Crawford! I am attending his concert in NJ on July 19 and my friend told me that I should see if I can meet him and tell him myself that I (and clearly many people) would be devastated were he not to star in the movie. Yours truely, Sheri

Comments: If Michael wouldn't want to play the Phantom, I think Thomas James O'Leary--the current Phantom on Broadway--should be asked to play the lead. I saw him recently and thought he was amazing!!! Just giving my suggestion. I love Phantom and a movie version would be wonderful. If I ever became a famous producer or director I wanted to create a movie version. A little late for that though. Have fun with the movie. Kelly

Comments: July 9, 1998 Good day. My name is NOEL and I am from the Philippines. While surfing all the broadway plays, I chance upon this message regarding a request to Warner Brothers to star Michael in the lead role. That of the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I am an avid fan of Michael Crawford and his music. His voice is so exceptional and his portrayal of the role of the Phantom is superb. No, but no one can duplicate the performance of Michael. Imagine, combining acting and at the same time singing, only Michael can do it. I bought a lot of broadway tapes and CD's, all the musical plays with their original cast recordings. But do you know that I have completed almost the CD's and tapes of Michael? That is how I believe in his talent and skills. I was so happy when EVITA was made into a movie. But I was even more excited when the news of the PHANTOM play being made into a movie is on the planning stage. Honestlly, when the musical play "Phantom of the Opera" being made into a movie hit the pages of our newspapers , only one name came into my mind : It ought to be MICHAEL CRAWFORD. No one else. Now, I am begging, pleading, asking, requesting, praying and hoping that Warner Brothers GET and CAST MICHAEL CRAWFORD to be the Phantom of the Opera! Come on, begin the Music of the Night! Because if these demands are not met, the curse of the phantom might occur. HOPING THAT YOU CAST THE KING OF THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT, Good Luck, God Bless, NOEL

Comments: Evidently, Warner Brothers, in their infinite concern of garnering huge box office revenues by casting a "Hollywood name", has decided to turn their back on the most magnificant love story of the century and the only ACTOR who MADE THE PART,MICHAEL CRAWFORD, his own signature piece. In so doing, they will suffer losses of great magnitude reflecting the absence of conscience in preserving the integrity of a movie that belongs to only one man.

Comments: I found this through Krista's Michael Crawford site. Michael Crawford is THE BEST choice for the movie. What he brought to the role on stage is what he would bring to the movie, not an actor playing a role but rather a spellbinding event that pulls you to that time and place, leaving you aching inside to see him again and again and again. And if it's the "bean-counters" making the decision, think about this, when Carol Channing was passed over for 'Hello Dolly' the audience made their displeasure known by not going to the film, making it a box-office failure inspite of a tremendously talented cast (I would dare say Barbara Streisand has more talent than either Antonio Banderas or John Travolta ever will even dream of having in the vocal department). It's your decision, but if you cast anyone other than Michael Crawford, I, for one, will never see it. However if you do the intelligent thing and cast him, I would see it time and time again.

Comments: I'm still hoping this is all just rumors. I just can't understand why ALW would do this; has he and Michael Crawford had some sort of falling out? I fell in love with POTO long before I ever actually saw it. Because of the cast recording, I could just picture it all in my head so clearly, and Michael's voice was just awesome. I've seen it several times since. Why would Webber want a star in the part (as if Michael wasn't one)? It's not as if Antonio's good looks will be on display under all the make-up, just his voice (yikes!). Why take the chance when you have such a sure thing in the palm of your hand? I hope all this effort is somehow going to the desk of Andrew Lloyd Webber. It's up to him to stand up for Michael and The Phantom.

Comments: The Phantom of the Opera was a wonderful show. Even though I am only 13, I know good music when I hear it, and when I went to go see the San Francisco performance of Phantom of the Opera I was breathtaken. The music is simply wonderful and even with my less than, well, good voice, it still sounds beautiful when I sing it. However, there is something about Michael Crawford that just exceeds perfection and brings the phantom to life. I own the cd of the original london cast recording of PTO and I listen to it daily, and hearing Crawford's voice just makes it all so real. Especially in the end song with Raoul and Christine where she has to make her choice. He gives such devotion to his character. The movie would be okay without him, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it would with out him. That is his role, and no other up and coming actor with a pretty face would do it justice. I'm 13 and I'm saying this!!!!! Cute guys are all that are going through my mind right now, but I still don't care if the role was offered to Matt Damon!!!!! It belongs to Michael Crawford!!!!

MC was possesed by Erik on the stage, and would do it once again in the movies. If there worried about his age...then make up would do wonders...after all, the phantoms face is usually well covered. And lets not forget...MC is a well peserved man for his age. If im 23...a 23 yearold who never would date a man over 32...and im attracted to michael...a lot of girls would be :)

I've also got front row tickets to his Aug. 4th concert. I think it is just plain wrong to cast Antonio as the phantom. You might as well change Erik's name to Bob and have him roam a 7-eleven. I hope Andrew has nightmares for this mistake. They just need to drop a chandelier on the whole Antonio idea. And I visited Antonio's Web site and they all agree it's wrong too. Michael is unquestionably the ONLY phantom! E-mail me if you want to discuss this urgent matter. I look forward to your response. Thanks.

Comments: I think it would be absolutely wonderful if Michael Crawford was cast as the Phantom, however, I do think it is necessary to keep all of this in proper perspective. If he is cast, that's great, there should be no need for demonstrations, etc. As I see it, if he is not cast, as long as the integrity of the story is protected, I would have no reason to boycott it. The story of the Phantom of the Opera is truly a beautiful work of art, and I see no reason why it should not be performed by anyone, as long as they really have a passion for it.

Don't they think that the name of the movie ALONE would bring in people? What has happened to the movie world where a movie has to have a big star in it or they think it won't sell? Or have the producers become so paranoid that they believe without an established *movie* star the movie will sink? What happened to giving new people a chance anyway? Michael has been in movies and on TV before. And it's not like his name isn't known.

I have seen the Phantom twice since September, first at the Kennedy Center in Washinton, DC and in Raleigh this past May. Although both men who protrayed the Phantom did an excellent job, they are NOT Michael Crawford. I have played the soundtrack so much that his is the voice I hear in my head no matter who plays in role. For those who say that he is too old or not well enough known in the movie industry to be in the movie version must not remember movies like "Hello, Dolly!" and other things that he has done. My husband and I are really looking forward to hearing him in concert May 15 at Hardee's Walnut Creek. We understand that the concert is a sellout. Looks to me as if a lot of us know of him. All these eloqent, heart felt notes have said it all. I have talked to dozens, and dozens of friends, acquaintances, co-workers, and strangers. They all say the same thing. "You've got to be kidding. No-one but Michael Crawford should be the Phantom". The book, the past movies, not even the musical itself, would not have, could not have, touched me so deeply, and reached down to my very soul, like Michael Crawford's voice and portrayal of Phantom. Won't you PLEASE give the rest of the world the opportunity to see, hear, and know, the "real" Phantom? What a shameful fraud this movie will be without him. I won't be there to see you desecrate the most beautiful, musical story of our time. Nor will any other Phantom of the Opera follower. Comments: I can't imagine anyone but Michael Crawford portraying the Phantom in a film version of POTO. I just saw him at Radio City Music Hall in NY and with his incredible voice and stage presence, this could be one of the great musicals. When he sang songs from Phantom, you could see him go right into the role, and he really was the Phantom as he sang. He created this role and it should be his to play in the film. Hollywood's desire to have a "name" or a "pretty face" is just to sell tickets, however, if anyone but Michael Crawford plays this role, it won't do this wonderful play justice. I would think there is a large audience (not just Michael Crawford fans) who wouldn't even bother to see the film without him - myself included. It's been a long time since a really great musical has been produced by Hollywood and now is their chance to show they can still make a great film. There is a whole generation of young adults and children who have never experienced the beauty and emotion of a truly great musical. "Grease" was fun, but not the caliber of what Phantom of the Opera could be. I implore ALW and Warner Brothers to consider ONLY Michael Crawford as PTOM.

Comments: This is a no brainer! Michael Crawford was, is and ever shall be, THE Phantom of the Opera. Why is anyone else even being considered? Doesn't ALW understand that his show belongs to all of us because its message is universal? Who hasn't experienced ridicule in some degree...and don't we all fear rejection? That is the essential message of "Phantom" and explains why people have taken this show to their hearts. It may border on melodrama, but we all can relate to the Phantom's pain. ALW and Warner Bros., watch out! You're tampering with some deep-seated emotions and some strong pre-conceived ideas of what this movie should be. In the hearts of several million fans, Erik has only one voice--MICHAEL CRAWFORD'S.

Like you, I agree that he is the only one able to portray Erik with perfection. There are a lot of good actors out there (Antonio Banderas and John Travolta are not), but the original, the first, the one who gave birth to the character deserves this honor and IS the best. Michael is the best, no question about it. I hope the film makers realize it before it's to late to prevent an injustice being commited. So let's pray, wait and see. Comments: POTO is a musical play about OPERA. The actors playing Erik and Christine must have trained voices that the audience can associate with operatic singing. Erik has been Christine's teacher. She thinks of him as the "Angel Of Music". His voice hypnotises her, haunts her, and stays "inside her mind". This voice must be both powerful and seductive. It must have tremendous range and be capable of showing the Phantom's heart-wrenching dispair when Christine leaves him. The audience must feel his pain and longing. The part of Raoul does not require such range or quality. He just has to sound romantically appealing. This part, Antonio Banderas, with his Latin charm, could undoubtedly do. But for Erik, Banderas would be woefully inadequate and the film would suffer. Michael Crawford created the part and has thrilled audiences and critics in the UK and the US. His performance is the one we want to see in the film. No one else should even be considered.
