Comments: I saw the Phantom in Toronto a few years ago. I was hooked on the music even before seeing the play. My wife, Daughter, and myself have purchased a number of Michael's CD's. I think he is fantastic. We had the opportunity to see Sarah Brightman in State College, PA in 2000. We hope, at some time, Michael will be in our area. Looking for a concert schedule is how I found this site. There is only one Phantom. Michael Crawford.

Comments: IF Phantom is moved to the big screen, I wholeheartedly recommend Michael Crawford as the Phantom!!! His outstanding performances and extensive film experience point to him as the best representative of the role. I say LET him follow in the shoes of Rex Harrison and Yul Brunner in taking his show to the screen--you won't be disapointed!!

Comments: Woe unto those who want to make a Phantom movie without THE Phantom! I refer, of course, to, yes, you've guessed it, Michael Crawford. When you can have the best, why bother with the rest! If this movie is made with anyone else in role, the first and last question everyone will ask is WHY? Was Michael Crawford unwilling, unavailable, deceased or diseased? NO, Andrew Lloyd Webber and the big wigs at Warner Brothers just thought they knew better than all the people who love this show. When the critics criticize it, the public ignore it and the video doesn't sell even in the cut-priced bin, it will be too late for y'all to change your minds, won't it?

Comments: So, what are you, Lord Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros. planning to do? Still going ahead with Antonio Banderas in the role? Surely not. He's not exactly big B.O. these days, neither is he a remotely popular choice. Is it possible, after all this time, that you still cannot see what is so obvious to hundreds of thousands of people - that MICHAEL CRAWFORD is all you need to make this movie a success. Do you really want to make a movie that is likely to be a disaster or perhaps you prefer to put it on the back burner again - ad infinitum. Perhaps you don't care about the movie at all anymore. Aaah, but there are millions of fans who do and they are not going to 'go home' and forget about this one. If Michael Crawford is not cast, IT WILL NEVER BE OVER! This is still just the beginning. Think about it.

Comments: I read a review of the new movie "You Can Count On Me" in this morning's paper, and the following paragraph caught my eye:

"'You Can Count On Me' is the sort of magic that happens when a good writer's words, story and characters survive unsullied by box-office compromise, brought to the screen by performers who feel the roles in their marrow." (Taken from review by David Germain, AP movie writer)

Warner Bros. needs to read that part about being "unsullied by box-office compromise." Andrew Lloyd Webber needs to read about preserving the integrity of the words (and music, in this case), story and characters of his show. And both of them should think about actors "feeling the roles in their marrow." What actor ever felt a character right down to the marrow of his bones more than Michael Crawford did with the Phantom?

Comments: Found this in an article in Daily Variety on the memorial for Jason Robards.

Robards was disappointed when Lee Marvin was picked to star in the film adaptation of The Iceman Cometh and he was unable to reprise his great stage success as Hickey from Jose Quintero's legendary off-broadway production.
The reviews for the film were not good: many referred to Robard's far superior performance on-stage which worked to further his career on both coasts. Gelb remembered "Friends called to tell Jason 'Those were the best notices you've ever had'"

I suspect the same thing happened with Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball and anyone else who made a movie version of a show that had become famous in another medium with an actor who made an indelible impression on the role. Comparisons are inevitable and rarely favorable to the person making the movie. The truth is the public would rather see the original performer than some Hollywood imitation. Audiences don't like to be short changed and they resent being condescended to. Reviewers and audiences alike recognize the difference and that just creates a bigger problem for the studio.

Comments: I was talking to a friend of mine who was working at the MGM Grand when Michael was doing EFX and she told me a wonderful story of Michael's kindness.
It seems there was a little boy who went to see EFX the night before having rather serious cancer surgery. He wanted to see the show and became so enchanted with Michael that he asked his mom if he could meet Michael. Against all odds, his mom told the maitre de the story and he somehow was able to get a few minutes back stage with Michael for the boy. Of all that was said, my friend didn't know, but the mom told her that Michael asked the boy if he believed that he would get better, to which the boy said "I guess so." Well, Michael told the boy of all the wonderful things in life that could happen if he believed. The boy had his surgery, and while in the hospital, either Michael or one of his aids, called and inquired on a regular basis about the young lad. That is the kind of genuine kindness that Michael has and what makes him the STAR that he is. And that's something no public relations firm or big shot studio can beat. HE IS THE PHANTOM!!!!

Comments: I know I already signed this, but I'm going to again just because I feel like I should do this for Michael. I'm thirteen years old, and I've seen The Phantom twice, but neither time with Michael Crawford. I have the CD of Michael, however, and I just want to see him singing Music of the Night and all the other songs. When I first saw this web page, I thought it was just telling about a movie being made with MC starring, and i was SO HAPPY!!! I could finally see my favorite singer ON VIDEO!! Then, as I read more, I realized not only was WB thinking not to cast Michael, but they might cast....Antonio Banderas? I don't know exactly who he is but let me ask you this: for a French man who sings like an angel, should an "okay" singer with a Mexican accent or a man with the perfect sounding accent and truly a voice like an angel be cast? Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Brothers, I have been a faithful fan of yours, but if you cast some fake Phantom instead of Michael, so be it. It shall be war upon you both!!

Comments: What an incredible waste of time and money to star anyone other than Michael Crawford in the movie. I recently saw Phantom on Broadway. I enjoyed it tremendously, but was sorry I had never seen it with Crawford in it since that was the CD I had heard for so many years. Quite a few people sitting near me had seen Phantom when he starred in it and commented that he alone was truly THE PHANTOM!

Comments: Warners, 58 million fans are eagerly awaiting this movie. Why create an unnecessary marketing disaster and vitriolic backlash by not casting the one and only Phantom - Michael Crawford? Who do you think will be your paying customer - someone who doesn't have a clue about the Phantom of the Opera? Beware of the POTO fans who haven't heard that the music, the storyline and casting are being drastically changed and hear about it after the movie has been made. Or worse yet, those who show up at the movie theatre expecting to see and hear 'The Phantom' they've heard forever on the OCR and don't hear and see Crawford. Even media critics and industry insiders see the firestorm brewing. Wouldn't it be wiser to have all of these groups working with you rather than against you?

Comments: I just wanted to put my comments onto this wonderful page. I was inspired by the musical "Phantom of the Opera" to learn how to and play all musical productions of the play. I got the opportunity to see the production in November of 1996, that was my (my freshman year of high school). I was sorry to say that I didnt see Michal play the role as phantom but could only imagine how he would play the part. The play was outstanding. I cried at the end. "The Phantom of the Opera" is the best broadway musical production that I have ever seen. I just wanted to send my opinion to this wonderful web page about this masterpeice.

Comments: I had the distinct honor of being in attendance at Michael's concert at the Gund Arena about one year ago. The experience I had was truly amazing. During the part of the program when Dale Christian joined him on stage for "The Phantom of the Opera" I saw the most breathtaking transformation take place. It seemed as though Michael Crawford disappeared from the stage and The Phantom, himself, took over Michael's body. Michael did't have to wear the mask for me to believe that the Phantom was singing. I can honestly say that if anyone other than Michael is cast in the role of the Phantom for the movie, then I will never let my eyes view such an atrocity. I feel that a terrible injustice would be done to Phantom fans, the movie, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. If I were ALW, I would want the best actors to compliment my masterpiece ans the best actor for the Phantom's role is Michael!

Comments: I don't see how this can even be a question. Michael Crawford IS the Phantom. Having seen the show both with and without Michael, I can say that with MC on stage, the show's flaws seem to disappear. Without him, it sometimes seems like mere melodrama. I would not see the film without MC in the lead.

Comments: It would appear that Mr. Webber has misjudged the public's feelings on this issue, and an issue it is! Why on earth do the powers that be in movie production insist on trying to make an already winning formula "better" by replacing one of the main constituents? A classic case of this is trying to re-make the series "Prime Suspect" using a different actress when Helen Mirren was still available!! The re-made "Cracker" was also a miserable failure in England. Who could replace Robbie Coltrane? Anyway, good luck with the campaign and let's hope that Webber sees sense and gives the people what they want!! Michael Crawford IS the Phantom of the Opera!

Michael Crawford obviously has won the hearts of many many people, and I
being one need to say that Michael Crawford's past role as the phantom,
along with the ability to put the hairs up on my back when he sings (I'm
sure many feel the same way), should earn him the title once again as

Comments: Hello there.
Please bring out "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" on video, WITH Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD in the lead role as "THE PHANTOM".
IF this production is brought out on video with somebody other than MR. MICHAEL CRAWFORD, you will be "lucky" to sell, say, one video per year, whereas with MICHAEL CRAWFORD AS "THE PHANTOM" on video, it will be sooooooooo popular that you will have a heck of a time trying to keep up with the sales of it. Every single factory will DEFINITELY HAVE TO WORK OVERTIME TO TRY TO KEEP UP / CATCH UP WITH THE DEMAND FOR THE "CRAWFORD PRODUCTION".
WITH MICHAEL CRAWFORD as "THE PHANTOM", you will certainly have a winner. Cast "THE PHANTOM" MICHAEL CRAWFORD in your video production of "THE PHANTOM",and the video won't even get a chance to touch the shelves in the video stores.
In other words, IF you DO want "THE PHANTOM" to be a success on video (I'm sure you do), then Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO.
PS:---THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD CAN'T DO.
HE IS ABSOLUTELY CAPABLE OF PLAYING ANY PART.
After all, look at his "work history"; that speaks for itself. (I mean, what HASN'T he done?)
If I was a theatre employer looking for an actor to play a part, I would most certainly choose Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD. Do what I would do;---
DEFINITELY CAST Mr. MICHAEL CRAWFORD IN "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" AS "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA".
You would certainly be oh-so-glad that you did (and so will the whole world).
We will love yuz for ever.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
Jaime D. Crawford.

Comments: I'm just going to say that I cannot imagine seeing anyone portray the Phantom the way Michael Crawford always has. Even now, he still shows the same unsurpassed emotion through both his voice, and his character. There could never be a singer or actor that could match or even come close to his ability to make his audience believe that he REALLY IS the Phantom. Why wouldn't he be the ONLY choice for the movie?? It wouldn't be the same without him, and I, as well as everyone else I know, wouldn't waste my time or money on a poor imitiation of the real thing!!

Comments: I, too, believe there is no one other than Michael Crawford to play the title role in the musical version of the Phantom movie. I first heard "Music of the Night" during an ice skating performance on TV more than 10 years ago. I had no idea what it was or who was singing. But THAT voice and THAT song immediately reached a part of me. I have since come to greatly admire this man who touched me so deeply. If it hadn't been for Michael's performance in London, New York, and Los Angeles, the stage production would probably not have survived nearly as long as it has. It certainly would not have the same flavor or the same following. The critics were not "thrilled" with the show, but they practically fell all over themselves with praise for Michael's performance. Andrew Lloyd Webber, himself, commented on how sad it was that the original stars from so many of the great musicals of the past had been replaced when the movie versions were made. Was that just an idle comment he didn't really believe in? Here is his perfect opportunity not to screw up this movie, and it seems he would rather bow to Warner Bros' idea of a box-office draw. (Frankly, I'd go see Michael stand on a box and not say a word for two hours before I'd spend money to see Antonio Banderas, but...) Why not make a movie that would preserve one of musical theater's most moving performances for generations to come? Cast Michael Crawford as Erik, and that will happen. It should be clear to Warner Bros by now what the overwhelming majority of fans want, and that we want them to stop dragging their feet on this project, as well.

Comments: I've been a long time fan of ALW's productions and believe Michael Crawford to be an exceptional performer and the only logical choice for the part of the phantom in the upcoming movie production. I say go with the original london stage performers. Only the best will do.

Comments: This is to WB...

If you do go cast Banderas and let him sing Phantom you had better warn the theatre owners that not only will their box office take be very low but also candy sales will be way down among the unsuspecting few who do go to see it. Why?
Because they will have free candy...
As soom as AB trys to sing Phantom, within moments, the theatre will be full of "Snickers".

Do the right thing.
Cast Michael Crawford!

Comments: I am now playing Cornileus Hackle in Hello Dolly which I know was one of Michael Crawford's earlier roles. His rise to become such an incredible Phantom has really inspired me. I hope to be as great as him someday.

Comments: Banderas may be a good actor (in roles of a certain type), but he can never be the legendary Phantom that Crawford is. Why cast a novice instead of the legend?
