Comments: In the current issue (Spring 2001) of Disney Magazine is a column-wide article about Michael's upcoming Disney album. Included is a picture of him with the caption, "CHOICE TUNES: Crawford picked songs from The Tigger Movie as well as Aida for his new CD." The text of the article is as follows: Artists as diverse as Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits, and Sinead O'Connor have lined up to cover material from the vast Disney movie songbook. Now British theatrical vocalist Michael Crawford tosses his hat into the ring with the release of Michael Crawford: My Disney Favorites, a bevy of contemporary soundtrack selections ranging from Phil Collins' Oscar-winning "You'll Be in My Heart" (Tarzan) to Randy Newman's "I Will Go Sailing No More" (Toy Story). "It's an amazing catalog," says Crawford, who first came to the world's attention in the eighties as the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera. "And people like Phil Collins, Elton John, and Tim Rice are living up to the legacy of the Sherman Brothers and the many great songwriters from the past." The songs on the CD come from a whittled-down list of Crawford favorites, including several from The Lion King that he combines in a final-track medley. The actor, who starred in the 1981 Disney flick Condorman, admires the universality of Disney songs. "Tarzan's 'You'll Be in My Heart' is a song from a parent to a child," says Crawford. "You don't even have to see the movie to enjoy the music."
Hoping this album will reach people through Disney that may not be more familiar with Michael than knowing his name. I'm sure it will be showcased somehow in the Disney Stores and maybe the catalog, in addition to the regular venues. Then what will Warner Bros have to say about his name recognition not being strong enough? Allison B.

Comments: I don't entirely agree with the idea of even making a movie about the phantom. I feel that Erik's peace should be preserved. However, if Hollywood insists on making a film about him, the only man up to the job is Michael Crawford. His interpretation of Erik's character is by far the best we will ever see.

Comments: To use a substitute script or actor to play the phantom will result in a substandard movie. Use of the original script and Michael Crawford has already proven to be a financially and artistically winning combination.

Comments: Lord Webber had better be careful, the whole world is watching to see how he will treat the theater-going fans that have supported him throughout his musical-producing career. If he shows no respect for us, no one will show any respect for him, nor will they go see his movie.

Comments: No one else could play the Phantom other than Michael Crawford. I don't see how the same ''atmosphere'' could be captured in the movie as was in the live musical, but if it's to have any chance, he has to be cast in the part. His ''presence'' and beautiful voice made him the Phantom forever. Everyone else (who followed him in the play) has just been a pale imitation.

Comments: I had the privilege of seeing Michael in POTO 3 times, twice in NY and once in LA. From the moment I first heard his voice on the LP (remember those?) I adored him. Recently a friend of mine saw POTO for the first time. She loved the show and said their "O.G." had a fine voice, but when I asked about the acting she said she couldn't see why great acting was needed for the part, just a great voice. See, this is what happens when you DON'T see Michael in that role! Cast totally against type, he brought what could have been just a stereotype horror figure to glowing, tragic, romantic life and made us love him and ache for him. THAT is what great acting (and great singing) does with a role like our Phantom! And watching how Sarah Brightman's career has progressed, I always think of how proud Erik would be of her and how wonderful if she could play Christine again. If Hollywood has decided to go ahead with Banderas and god-knows-who-else in the cast of the movie instead of Michael and Sarah, only a miracle will save them from a disaster beyond their wildest... well, you know. By the way, are we certain that there is no full visual record of the original cast? Somewhere on one of my videotapes off the TV in the late 1980's there is the whole "Point of No Return" scene, obviously from a performance, probably in London. I find it hard to believe that RUG never bothered to preserve ALL of their blockbuster on film or tape. Does anybody know anything about this? Also, has anyone else been put out over the past couple of weeks by movie reviewers making unwarranted comparisons of Phantom and "Hannibal"? Bad enough they rip off his hat and cloak for that movie, but reviewers snickering about how they could almost imagine him singing MOTN to Clarice nearly made me lose my lunch. As if we didn't need another lesson in why Erik needs protection from Hollywood!

Comments: The first time I experienced "Phantom" it was in San Francisco and of corse the lead was not Mr Crawford. The pure majesty of the play and the genius of Andrew Lyode Weber took my breathe away, and I have been in love ever sence. I then bought the broadway cast recording of the the musical. With the first note I heard Michael sing, I was once again swept away. There is no Phantom without Michael Crawford. As much as I love Antonio Banderes, who is rumored to play the hollywood role, I know that it would simply not be Phantom without Michael's flawless voice. Mr Crawford created Phantom and he will always be Him. I wish him luck!

Comments: Loved the story on replacement actors in the OC Register. At last someone who gets it. When someone has made an indelible impression on a role it's a big risk to replace them because comparisons WILL be made. Heaven help the actor who tries and fails because the fans and the critics won't be kind. For too long, the fans were quiet when Broadway superstars were passed over for Hollywood names who weren't half as good or who were all wrong for the part. The uproar over Julie Andrews and My Fair Lady is still talked about. But now, thanks to the internet, fans can fight back. Movie executives before could only realize they'd blown it after the movie came out and the public stayed away in droves. Now they have the opportunity in advance to find out what the audience wants. Admittedly this is a double edged sword. If they ignore what the fans are telling them, they will have no excuses when the movie fails. Those who sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind and it will be a hurricane

Comments: Dear Sir,

How can you put a price tag on the heart and soul that Michael
Crawford has given to Phantom? Do you realize how much he is loved and
respected by his fans? He is the man who deserves the role of Phantom, he is
the man who will bring the audiences to their knees, be it on stage, or on
film. He is the man you gave to us, please don't take him away. We have
waited so very long for him. I am sorry things changed with Sarah Brightman,
but that should have no impact on the role that belongs to Michael. Listen
to the fans, people have a right to decide who they want, please pay
attention. Why would you want to invest all that money in a flop? It will
be one, and you know it, without the true Phantom, Michael Crawford.

Thank you
Bonnie

Comments: I know I've signed here before but I like to say something. I saw Michael perform in San Francisco 2 nights ago and it was a thrilling experience! He was able to sing then and he can still sing now. Especially when he performed "Music of the Night" and "Phantom of the Opera" with Dale Kristien. Even when he wasn't wearing the mask or makeup, he was still covincing as the Phantom. It was so beautiful and sensual, I tell you. When he wasn't singing, he was telling anecdotes like the infamous Phantom boat story and auditioning for Raoul before getting cast as the title character and everybody laughed so hard. He had told these stories many times and the audience still found them very funny. To the TPTB and ALW: Are you listening to what I'm saying? Michael Crawford has been and forever will be phantastic!

Comments: I am in love with "The Phantom of the Opera" and would love to have a home version of the musical some day- as long as Michael Crawford is cast as the Phantom. He is quite talented and does a wonderful job as the Phantom..so why deny him the motion picture role as the Phantom? I myself have exposed quite a few people to "Phantom" through the R.U.Group soundtrack and they love Mr. Crawford's voice. Unfortunately, they can't see the musical in person- so at least let them see him in the movie theater.

Comments: Micheal Crawford is the true and only phantom. I believe that with his persistent vocal range, he would for sure be able to play the role of the phantom again. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Toronto, ON. in 1993 where he signed the cassette "a touch of music in the night" and my very first Phantom ticket. I am a Phantom phan, and would enjoy to hear his inspiring voice once again. "SING, MY ANGEL"

Comments: This whole situation really burns me to the core. These Hollywood bigshots who glut themselves to satisfaction by playing God, deciding who the public will see, regardless of simple reason or the wishes of the audience--they are truly one of those annoying little things that bug us every day. The story of the Phantom means nothing to them. But it sure means alot to us. The Phantom represents us, the non-famous members of socitey, the outcasts. He is our patron saint, and only Michael Crawford can do him justice. Paying no heed to us, and giving the role to some big, over-hyped star does us a great insult that we shall not soon forget.

In my opinion it would be a travesty not to honor Michael by having him portray the Phantom in the film adaptation. Michael was the original Phantom and the one who made this role famous. I believe that no other man could play this part with the sincerity or enthusiasm that Michael Crawford has to offer. Please listen to Michael's many dedciated fans and understand that what we are asking for is the right decision. Thank you for your time.

I watched the Michael Crawford in Concert on channel 16 last year..It was great....I even bought the tape of it. If you have any idea where I can get a copy when you played Phantom of the Opera I would be really grateful...and be tickled pink.....If you cannot thanks for taking your time and reading this.

Comments: I'm glad this site exists where I can vent my frustration. Otherwise, with no outlet for my anger, I'd surely go mad! So many people have fallen in love with Michael's voice, which makes him perfect for the phantom. It isn't the same with Antonio; people fall in love with his. . . something else, which doesn't fit the phantom at all! I just wish that Hollywood could get something right for a change--Michael Crawford has meant so much to me, if Hollywood could only get one thing right in all eternity, I'd still pray that this is it: Michael Crawford as the Phantom and a script that follows the original storyline as much as possible!

Comments: Hello. I am a big ALW musical fan. I feel that the film version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA should stay close to the stage version. They should musicial theatre or opera singers in this version not film stars who cannot sing the music properly. I think that Michael Crawford should recreate his award winning role as the phantom. If he can't do it, the only other choice should Colm Wilkinson. Sarah Brightman is the best choice for Christine, but if she can't do it, choose some broadway lyric colouratura like Rebecca Luker, Christiane Noll or even Claire Moore. The part of Raoul should go to either Michael Ball or Chuck Wagner. La Calotta should be some opera diva like Renee Flemming, Cecilia Bartoli, Kiri TeKanewa or Kathleen Battle. Mme Giry choices should be Marin Mazzie, Elaine Paige, Bernadette Peters or Audra McDonald. Piangi should be performed by some well known operatic tenor like Jose Carreras or Jose Cura. Meg Giry should be somone like Karen Ziemba or Judy Kuhn. The managers and Reyer should be picked from Victor Garber, Howard McGillen, Davis Gaines, Anthony Crivello, Peter Polycarpou or Michael Maguire. These people are musical performers and should be used. Again the script should stay close to the stage version with maybe one new song added such as THE HEART IS SLOW TO LEARN sung either by the phantom or Christine. I am a big fan of movie musicals and I have seen some film musicals hurt by poor scripts, musical changes and the poor casting choices. Use musical theatre and opera people and used the broadway script with only miner changes more suited to film than stage. The cinematography for this film musical could be amazing because it's a visual show as well as a gothic romantic-horror tale. I am a musician, music instructor/ arranger, and theatre performer. I hail from Warsaw, NY. Later....... majv

Comments: What Andrew Lloyd Webber, RUG and WB are not grasping it seems is this...
Just because they may perhaps make the Phantom movie without Michael Crawford this campaign is NOT going to end. (Unfortunately)

This campaign has always had two main goals in mind, one proactive and one reactive. Of course the one we have been fighting so hard for the past three years and want to see succeed is the first proactive goal. We are committed to seeing Michael Crawford cast in a film version of the stage play that stays true to the integrity of the original show.

Now, given that this does not happen in the near or far future, the second goal will then come to the forefront. I am stating here for anyone who cares to read this post that the campaign website is NOT going anywhere no matter when, how, if and with whom the movie is eventually made. There has been entirely too much hard work, dedication and love put in by too many people, thousands have made their voices heard through this huge effort, and the history is going to be here for anyone interested in the future. Additionally, if they do make this film without Michael Crawford as was promised, and it is the failure we believe it will be, this website will hold them accountable and provide a place for people to come and air just what they think and feel about the Phantom movie. We will also be promoting a boycott, but that is for me a secondary issue in the reactionary phase that I do not want to elaborate on at the moment.

Now if this sounds a bit like a Scarlett O'Hara act, including "As God as my witness," I apologize and please forgive me. After TEN years of waiting for this film, and THREE years of working my heart out along side the bevy of other dedicated and caring people who have made this effort work, I am feeling a bit put out.

Warner Bros. and RUG are really missing something here that could work to their advantage in a big way. This campaign and effort has provided a PR DREAM. They could be using this huge and unbelievable website and effort to promote this film and push a wonderful product to be proud of. What better than to say that this is what thousands upon thousands of Phantom fans asked for? And if it fails (it won't) they could blame US.

Time waits for no man, not even if he IS a Phantom. There is no doubt that Michael Crawford is not getting younger. With a mask and makeup he can still do the film. He carries the Phantom in his heart and soul, he created this character and it should be his right to make the record left to all as was PROMISED. He can still do this; I have faith in him and his tremendous talent. He is the best hope for this to be filmed with the integrity the show deserves, and is still the best financial and artistic choice for the studio and for the fans.

Let's hope they see the light before it is too late to salvage.

Comments: I wonder if ALW has any inclination of the risks he's taking with this movie. Has anyone made such a fuss over the Evita movie or any other movie version of a musical before it was made? This campaign's existence after three years is proof that people have not forgotten Michael Crawford's voice nor do they wish to see it fade. It's been years since MC left Phantom and we're still clamoring for his reprise of the role in the movie. Just shows that time doesn't always forget, and obviously Michael Crawford's performance is one that is not easily forgotten.

True, we shouldn't be here three years later, but who's fault is that? The Phantom movie should have been made long before the advent of this campaign, but unfortunately it didn't happen that way. Now this campaign is here to tell ALW and WB the fans are still waiting for them to fulfill their promise of a POTO movie with Michael Crawford. Eleven years (or in my case, 6) does not make a difference. I still want a POTO movie with Michael.

Comments: Hollywood seems to be afraid of musicals now (unless they're animated) and never seem to be quite sure what to do with them. Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that musical movies are rarely original and any time the audience has something to compare a movie to, that movie has to be as good as or better than the original. This is especially true of Phantom which has been seen by over 60 million people. Millions of people have heard the original cast album. They have a voice in their head; they have a show in their mind. They are going to have much higher expectations than the average movie goer.

Phantom is a known commodity which has a built in audience eager to see it. Done right it should be a blockbuster but ONLY if it lives up to expectations. Cast wrong and it will make the Avengers look like a success. There was a movie that totally missed the flair and style that made the tv series a hit and flopped accordingly. The problem with an audience that knows the material is that it is not easily fooled. People tend to get insulted when moviemakers try to pass off an inferior product. The audience knows darn well when it is being cheated.

Comments: One of the biggest regrets of my life is never having seen Michael perform as the Phantom, for by the time I was old enough to know what Broadway was, he was gone--the irony is terrible, so close yet so far away. If only he could play the Phantom in this movie, it would be a dream come true for the millions of us who have never had the pleasure of seeing Michael as the Phantom. Please make this dream come true now while Michael is still in good condition to play the part. Time is running out and he isn't getting any younger, though I think he's just as stunning as he ever was.

Comments: I strongly urge Warner Bros. to cast Michael Crawford in the role as the phantom in the movie version of "Phantom of the Opera". He is the epitomy of the literary role. He has the best vocal range for the songs in the movie. The movie will not be worth seeing without Michael Crawford. He is the phantom of the Opera. Do not disappoint and insult the millions of people who have seen him on stage.

Comments: Hello, I can't wait for the film version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I hope that it stays true to the stage version. I also hope that Michael Crawford will recreate his multi award winning stage performance as the phantom. The only other person that should be in the running is Colm Wilkinson. The role of Christine will be harder to cast if Sarah Brightman won't do it. Perhaps some operatic or broadway lyric coloratura soprano such as Rebecca Luker or Christiane Noll. I think that either Michael Ball or Chuck Wagner should be considered for the role of Raoul. Some famous operatic diva such as Renee Fleming, Cecila Bartoli or Dame Kiri TeKanawa should be considered for La Carlotta. Also either Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie or Elaine Paige should be consider for the role of Madame Giry. And someome like Karen Ziemba for Meg Giry. I love the music in the Phantom and the stage version is just right for a film version, but stay true to the original broadway production. Staying true to the original production will please the fans and musical theatre critics. I am also a big fan of Sarah Brightman and Andrew Lloyd-Webber musicals. I am a musician, music instructor/ arranger and theatre performer from Western NY. The film version will succeed with true broadway and operatic performers, not movie stars. Later........ majv

Comments: Hi this is a copy of the letter that I recently posted to Andrew Lloyd Webber. It's a bit of a marathon - so I have to apologise! I tried to make it as short as I could.....

Here goes...

Sir Andrew,

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

I decided to write to you because of the unending controversy that seems to surround a proposed version of your musical 'Tha Phantom Of The Opera.'

Recent reports indicate the film is likely to go ahead, but disappointingly without the presence of the original 'Phantom' Michael Crawford.

I don't know how much of Michael Crawford's virtue I can extol here, and to be honest, Sir Andrew, I have been in two minds about writing this letter to you. Firstly, I feel, as many millions do, indebted to you because of the beautiful and inspiring music you have given us through the years. Secondly, I trust your judgement and instincts, and I feel somewhat silly trying to venture an opinion about a project that you would develop based on your most successful work. However, I do have an incredibly strong and positive feeling towards both the show and Mr Crawford's performance in it; and I truly believe that if this film is to be made he should be the one to immortalise 'The Phantom' for future generations.

I am going to endevour to tell you why.

When thinking about writing this letter, I wondered: what could add that's new? How could I possibly verbalise a sentiment that has been perfectly articulated by so many people over the years. Finally, I decided to return to my own personal observations and experiences.

In 1986 when your 'Phantom Of The Opera' burst onto the West End, it was clear from the outset that this show was different. I remember even as a child back in Australia hearing all these amazing things about this show so many thousands of miles away. The show's appeal was broad and far-reaching: Gaston Leroux's haunting story, your magnificent score coupled with new and special effects.

But if that's all the 'Phantom' was - great special effects and staging - then it should have faded away by now. Instead, it's popularity has continued to grow. Quite obviously, the show's appeal is based on something more profound.

I think the appeal lies not so much with the physical production, but with the underlying concept: unrequited love, the importance of self-image, acceptance, and the connection that all of us can share through music.

Perhaps to venture further, on a more personal level, 'The Phantom Of The Opera' does more than entertain, it inspires. I have spoken to countless people who say that this show, this story, this music, has moved them to try things they would never have considered possible. It provides such a unique and interesting insight into the human condition. Your true achievement was the perfect marriage of story, concept and music. The other great achievement was taking the gamble and hiring Michael Crawford to bring your vision to life.

I could spend pages detailing what I perceive to be the nuances of Michael's performance. However, I don't think that's necessary, you hired Michael and had an initial belief in him. I wonder where that belief has gone now? And after all, I can only use my imagination as to what Michael's performance was actually like. But, what I do have, is the privilege of hearing his fantastic vocal performance on the cast recording.

If I, and millions like me, can come to think of Michael as 'The Phantom' after only ever hearing his voice, imagine what kind of impact his presence would have on film!

This, of course, leads to the most-asked question: 'Why is Michael Crawford so popular in this role?' The only answer is, 'Because he created and gave us a character that touches our inner spirit.' He showed us the difference between acting and showing off - he never once tried to impose his persona on the role.

To make the role of 'The Phantom' truly work a special kind of performer is needed because the character is as much much off stage as on. The performer must have a presence, not just a good voice.

Michael Crawford had, and still has, that presence.

Additionally, you have to realise that we would all rather see an actor capable of performing this role the way in which it was originally conceived and written, with special regard to the vocal aspect. 'The Phantom' is not the kind of character you can compromise with an audience.

Michael Crawford has the vocal skill to sing this role. Michael has the acting skill to perform this role.

Moreover, he has the commitment.

I qualify all this through a personal observation, on that I was grateful to witness first hand. Last year I was fortunate enough to see Michael in concert. What made his performance of 'The Music Of The Night' so incredible was his ability to let us travel with him through the song. So many performers merely sing that song to us; but Michael through his intonation and feeling, takes us on a journey. For those five minutes we were all right there with him - there was no noise, no sounds of chatter, just this incredible quiet that swept across the stadium. I don't think there was a person there that night who wasn't moved - and we were all aware that what we were seeing and hearing was unique: not to be copied and never emulated.

Ultimately, whoever has the final responsiblity of bringing 'The Phantom Of the Opera' to the screen will hopefully realise that this is more than just another project. He or she will have the duty above and beyond making money, the duty to capture the heart and soul of this story and celebrate your vision.

It seems a travesty then that Micheal Crawford's contribution to the role and indeed the show, seem to have been ignored in favour of trying to appease a set of movie studio executives, who's mindset lies with Box Office appeal and the financial bottom line. I realise (as many people out there do) that there are so many factors involved with film production. All of us understand that compromises have to be made, but the studio concerned has made it abundantly clear that they are not interested in the quality and integrity of the proposed film. There even seems to be an 'arrogance' about the whole conception of this project. Arrogance because those in control seem unwilling to the engage the public who make this show the continuing success it is today.

Sir Andrew, 'show us just a little of your omnipresent brain' - and cast Michael Crawford as 'The Phantom Of The Opera.'

Yours Truly,

Rachal Aza

Sex symbols have enough roles to play as it is; let's keep them in their place and give other actors a chance where their talents can best be shown. Comments: If the Phantom looked like Antonio Banderas, then the Phantom would cease to be the Phantom. I know that Hollywood always makes things overglamorous, but please, can't we have a scrap of realism here? The Phantom's appeal was not in his looks (that's kind of a major part of the story), but in his skill--as a genius, an architect, a ventriloquist, and above all--as a musician. Even Webber's music falls short of conveying the musical power that the Phantom supposedly had, but at least with Michael Crawford's voice, one was able to pretend along. Now, not only might Banderas (with his completely opposite type of appeal) steal the role, but Webber will also have to make his music easier to sing for his sake. I'm willing to compromise: if Crawford's voice is dubbed in, I will go see the movie, but I will also lose my beautiful dream that I might one day see Mr. Crawford perform this role. If that is the awful price of Hollywood's glamor, then so be it, but I will not tolerate the absence of Mr. Crawford's voice in this movie.

The story of Phantom is a magical, beautiful story that can't be told by your average Joe Schmoe with a $10 million dollar salary just because he has a pretty face. The people who are going to see this movie eight or nine times (You know, like people saw Titanic) are going to be those who love it in its stage form. But we'll only do that if there's a Phantom we like. And we're very numerous.

If the studios do not make the film the way the audiences want it, they have no one to blame but themselves...Especially ALW. He of all people should know better when it comes to making a film version of a popular musical. Even those who are not Phantom fans expect to see the stage musical on film. If the film, even before production, is heard to be lacking, then who would go see it if the fans won't want to? If word gets around that the fans of the show refuse to see the film version, what does that tell other people about the film and the filmmakers?

I think it's key for them to follow the stage production as closely as possible, for if they did it that way the movie would already have an audience with the fans of the show. Plus, it would assauge the curiousity of non-fans about the popularity of the stage show. It would be pretty much how fans remember seeing the show on stage, and it would capture the long-running performance on film. However, with all the rumored changes that are happening, how much of the show are Phantom fans going to recognize? How many of them are going to like it? (I think fans now can answer that question) Or better yet, if it's going to be so different, why would they even bother? If they hear it's bad, they may not want to taint their memories of the stage production...ALW and WB would then lose most of a guaranteed audience.

I also never got to see Michael Crawford's Phantom on stage...And will not see a Phantom movie without him in it. The Phantoms I've seen on stage and the bunch of others I've heard on video, CD, sound clip, etc. do not compare to Michael Crawford's voice in his CDs and videos. This time I want to see THE Phantom in all his glory.

I never had the luck to see Mr. Crawford in 'The Phantom of the Opera' but I have the OLC cd and know the power and emotion and magic in it are completely breathtaking. I have also heard Mr. Banderas sing it at Webber's 50th anniversary, and although, yes, I gave it a major chance, it did not phase me. This casting role for Erik is horrible, please, WB listen to the fans who know probably more than you on this at the moment. They're the ones wanting the movie; they'll be the ones who pay. Give it to them as they want it. Cast Mr. Crawford.

Sure, people have to make cruel business moves all the time, but they should never lie to the people who have supported them and paved their way of success! That's what really gets me. Webber will make his movie. The movie-seeing crowds will come and go. And then where will Webber go? Unless he gives Crawford the role that he promised, he'd better not try showing his face in the theater world again. He has his chance to show his true colors, and we will either love him, or hate him; support him, or boycott him for it.

Comments: Letting things drag on interminably takes a toll on you, doesn't it? Aren't you sick of the movie hooplah? Do yourself, and all of us rabid fans, a favor and settle this Phantom movie issue. Sure, there might be obstacles relating to finance and production and other business issues, movies are big deals and big money. But there is no such obstacle to casting the title roll. That, Lord Lloyd-Webber, has been done now for 15 years. You're a scrappy little fellow; twist arms, tweak ears, whisper sweet nothings, do whatever it takes, just get the damned thing done. And by the way, I have loved EVERYTHING you've done. Aspects of Love. Evita. Starlight Express. Last time I visited Vegas I was sick to learn I wouldn't get to see Starlight for the 5th time at the Hilton. You're exceptional at what you do. Don't be swayed from your original instinct in casting Mr. Crawford. He takes his reponsibility most seriously, and will do you proud. Email me, if you'd like and we'll discuss things further. If there's anything I can do to help launch the movie with Michael in it, I'm at your disposal. Thanks for your ear. Sherry

Comments: I have to agree with all of you, that the only one who can do justice to the role of the Phantom in this movie,is Michael Crawford. I just wish that (TPTB) realize this. I just don't understand why they are taking so long when it should be obvious who should, and must, play the Phantom in this movie. If they cast AB,or anyone else, and change the play, financially, they will regret it and regret it big time. ALW,and WB,will not be giving us their best, we know it and they know it.Furthermore, MC is the one that did over 1300 performances of it on the stage,Not AB. MC is the one that put his heart, and soul into the performances,Not AB. MC is the one who won the Tony,Olivier, and other awards for his performances,as the Phantom. Not AB.MC's likeness, and voice, are being used to sell POTO,merchandise, not AB's. It is just so frustating, that they know who to cast as the Phantom for this movie, but are taking so long to do it,and/ or thinking of having someone else do it. Not to mention the fact that they are thinking of changing the play. I,and millions of other people have not had the honor, and pleasure of seeing MC,as the Phantom. This movie will be our only shot at seeing him.If they don't get this movie right, the fans,(including this one)will be hurt, disappointed, and furious.Even more so than they are now. I just hope that they come to their senses real soon,(keeping fingers crossed)and do what is right. That is to keep that play the way it is,and to cast MC,as the Phantom ASAP.

Best Wishes, your friend in the fight,

Jean

Comments: Although I've never been able to see Michael Crawford on stage I have seen other actors portraying the Phantom and they never compare. If they were to make a movie with Antonio Banderos or God help us John Travolta I would definately not go see it. Not to say they aren't good actors, but they're no Phantom. I know there are many who agree.

Comments: In 1994, when I was 11, I listened to the original London recording of Phantom of the Opera and I loved it. When I saw the musical 3 years later at San Francisco, I enjoyed it immensely. Well, it didn't have the original cast or Michael Crawford but it was still entertaining enough to leave me captivated and moved to tears at the end. As I went home to listen to the London cast recording again, I loved it even more because I actually saw the musical and I played it on a regular basis.

Strangely later on, I forgotten about seeing and listening to Phantom until recently. When I heard that a Phantom movie was in the works and that Crawford was considered for the role, I thought that would be great! But when I learned that Antonio Banderas was going to be cast as the Phantom, I thought what?! What ever happened to casting Michael, who performed it 1300 times, never got tired of the role, still talks about it enthusiastically, and can still sing?! I have listened to some of his CDs recently and his voice still strikes a chord in me and bring tears to my eyes!

I have been telling my mom and my friends about this and they are angry too. They had seen the musical, loved it, and they hope Michael will get the role. I hope WB and ALW will listen to what the Phans are asking for. Otherwise, I would find an entertainment magazine with a top cover story titled "List of 100 Things Hollywood Did Wrong" and what would be #1 on that list? Casting Antonio Banderas as the Phantom of the Opera instead of original star Michael Crawford!

Comments: Phantom of the Opera fans have been waiting for over 10 years for the film version of the spectacular stage musical that has proven to be the biggest box-office money-maker in history. What made this show so special was the performance of Michael Crawford. No one disputes that. The show has continued playing all over the world but never has the lead actor been praised with anything like the adoration that the fans and critics alike showered on Michael Crawford. He is still available and his voice is as wonderful as ever. He has said that he would love to make the film. He loves playing the role and he "always will". The fans have made it clear that he is the only actor/singer who would be acceptable in the film. No one but a tone-deaf ninny would want some one like Banderas to croak through songs like "Music of the Night". Apparently, what ALW and WB don't understand is that the man who plays the role must be outstanding as both a singer and as an actor. Banderas is neither, in my opinion. They should stick with what works, and not screw around trying to "improve" on perfection.

Comments: This is such a great website. I don't have internet hookup at home (yet) so I can only check in at work but love to see what's going on with the movie, etc. You always seem to be having such a great time discussing Michael and the latest developments!

As for the movie, with all the changes being made in cast, script and music, how about this for the new title: "Another Fine Mess!" or "ALW's Folly" -- either one works for me. With AB destroying what Michael Crawford created, calling it Phantom just doesn't work at all.

Again, thanks for a great website and I just pray that ALW and crew pay attention to all of you. I know he's lost my contribution to his coffers -- without Michael, there isn't a snowball's chance in a microwave that I'll be forking over any of my hard-earned cash for either the movie or the video. I saw AB attempting to sing at ALW's 50th birthday party -- that was MORE than enough -- I nearly laughed myself into a coma, until it sunk in that this was what the movie would sound like! Which brings another title to mind: "Titanic II -- The Sinking of the Phantom of the Opera"!

Comments: The picture that is posted below showing how the Phantom looks in the final scene of the show has reopened the discussion about what Ben Elton meant when he was quoted as saying, “…the face matters.” Earlier someone suggested that Elton and Lloyd Webber might be changing the story line to where Erik would have looked normal until some catastophe (perhaps acid thrown in his face) disfigured him and turned him into the bitter, vengeful creature he later became. If that is true, then they are destroying the very foundation of the plot. The only reason I can see for this change is that they are trying to make the role fit some pretty boy movie star.

What they have forgotten is the crux of the Phantom’s story, which is that Erik has NEVER known love. He wasn’t a nice, normal guy who had something terrible happen to him after he became an adult. In the original story (book and show), the motivation for his actions is that he desperately seeks acceptance and love because he has never known these things. Because he was born disfigured, his own mother rejected him. Because he grew up disfigured, he was ridiculed and tormented all through his life. People can empathize with that kind of suffering, and without that basic fact the story falls apart.

If the story has been changed this drastically, then changes will need to be made to the music as well. There will be no need for lyrics like: “This face, which earned a mother’s fear and loathing…A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing.” Those words tug at the heart because they express the deepest sadness of Erik's soul. Now they will need to be discarded or changed to reflect the new plot line.

When Erik’s sadness, bitterness, and desperation are perfectly communicated by an actor and singer as skilled as Michael Crawford, then the audience feels the full impact of the man’s tragic life and responds wholeheartedly. That’s what happened in the theater and the show became a phenomenon. It can happed again in movie theaters all over the world if Andrew Lloyd Webber will only believe again in his original concept and leave the story and the music intact.

Comments: I am also fed up with Webber's beating around the bush. If Crawford doesn't get the role in this movie, then not only will I boycott the movie, but I will also take all the money that I usually spend on family outings to see Webber's shows on Broadway (which is upward of $500 per year), and donate it to the charities officially supported by Michael Crawford. Perhaps we should all do the same--that way, our Phantom will win no matter what happens!

Comments: Far too many times, in my opinion, have we, the theatre audience, had to endure film remakes of musicals that may include many of the original cast, but not the principles. While there may be a contract snag from time to time that prevents the performer who originated the role form reprising it on screen, unfortunately, it seems far too often the decision to cast someone other than the incumbent is made by a person who does not appreciate the importance to the live-theatre crowd of having the original performances preserved. Remember, there is always time to produce a remake later on, if it’s deemed necessary to do so. Hopefully, the producers will seize the moment and give us Mr. Crawford while the opportunity exists.

Comments: I have a theory. Perhaps Webber continues to leave us hanging because he wants us to keep giving this movie all the publicity. Meanwhile he knows the entire time that Michael Crawford is the only real choice for the Phantom. I pray this is the case. If Crawford is not given the part, then no one will be happy--the public will not like the poor quality of the movie, Webber will not like his negative profit and his drastically less favorable image, and we theater-goers will be the least happy of all.

Comments: Michael's supporters have brought so much attention to this movie. No one ever mentions the movie without also mentioning the huge effort we have put into our cause. Webber has gotten a great deal of free publicity from us; he ought to thank us by letting us have our way--after all, its for the best anyway. If he refuses, everyone will see it as a big scandal, and know the indecency and ingratitude with which Webber treats all of us who so love his work.

Comments: I witnessed Michael's performance in "Phantom of the Opera" in 1988 in New York City on Broadway. His performance was exquisite, beckoning emotion from the entire audience as he proceeded through the complicated plot of the play. Please seriously consider and re-consider whom best fits this part and who will draw the largest audience. Many people have missed the opportunity to see him play this renowned role, and should be willing to pay to see it. If he IS cast in this role, I know I WILL see it in the theater and would be in line to purchase my videotape copy whenever it is released. Don't let this opportunity slip away to permanently immemorialize this great actor in the role designed for him.

Comments: It's obvious that Warners and ALW DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS STORY. It's nothing to them. In their minds, Erik can be played by anyone who can act reasonably well and sing reasonably well. They do not even begin to understand why this character has fascinated and touched people for nearly a century. If they did, then they would understand why huge numbers of people want Michael Crawford's portrayal preserved for posterity.

I recall that ALW once said, many years ago, "There will be many Phantoms." Yes, and there were a number of Phantoms before he wrote his show. BUT, only one actor has captured the essence of Erik. He cannot be played with any conviction by someone who is used to constant adulation for his looks and body. Only someone who has felt the pain of rejection, who has had reasons to feel inferior and who has experienced brutality at the hands of others can understand how a man born hideously deformed, must feel.

What is more, it states in the book that Erik is THIN, THIN, THIN! and he is OLD, OLD, OLD! It also states that he is French. A Spanish accent will not do, anymore than an Australian or Asian accent would be believable. No offense intended to Australians or Asians!)

This fine comedy act, Warners and Webber, DON'T CARE, DON'T CARE, DON'T CARE. BUT, it will go down in movie history that this campaign opposed the casting of anyone other than Michael Crawford and that fact will not be forgotten, especially if the movie is a flop. Any movie is a gamble, but never before has there been one that depended so heavily on being successful. BECAUSE, if it is a disaster or even just a mediocre success at the box office, hundreds of thousands of people are going to say "WE TOLD YOU SO, WHY DIDN'T YOU LISTEN TO US?!" AND, all the critics will agree!

Movie and TV companies are constantly striving to come up with entertainment that captures the public's attention, wins awards and fills their coffers (and pockets)with money to make more movies and TV shows. Why is it that they also, invariably, do not take note of public opinion? They pat eachother on the back (and themselves) for making, what they believe, are creative choices. They think they know what the public wants and sometimes they are right. With increasing frequency, these days, they are WRONG.

If they get it wrong with The Phantom Of The Opera, reminders of what might have been will haunt them for the rest of their days.

If Mr Banderas gets the role and he ends up being flayed alive for it, I do hope he realises that TPTB WILL NOT CARE! Least of all, Lord Lloyd Webber, who is renowned for throwing out his writers and actors as often and as thoughtlessly as other people throw out old underpants!
