Comments: The powers that be have shown in the past that they do not know what the public really wants. Consider how many films have failed just this year. If anyone other than MICHAEL CRAWFORD is cast as the Phantom in this film, it is destined to be a failure. The fans of this show want MICHAEL CRAWFORD and no one but MICHAEL CRAWFORD will do!

Please - you must cast Michael in this role. Don't forget what happened to
Gypsy. And something even more recent - Evita. Many movies have been
failures because of mis-castings. This is Michael's role. You owe it to
all the fans who have seen him and supported the theatre production of this
play to give him this role.

I can tell you this - I know I won't go see it if he is not given the role.
And I would think you would want the fans of Broadway to be purchasing
movie tickets, and all the marketing ventures that go with it.

Comments: Your web page with Michael and Julie reminded me of that wonderful concert Oct. 16, 2000 in New York! I was there! What a night to remember!
I've written several letters in the past to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and to Warner Brothers. I have to believe that they are intelligent enough to realize that only Michael Crawford can do the role of Erik justice! After all, Michael is the Phantom and no one else can even come close. Looking so forward to Michael being in the movie version of "The Phantom of the Opera." I wished Michael good luck in that role back in 1995 at an autograph signing. It's about time to get this show on the road and break a leg!

Comments: It is my loss not to have seen the Broadway production of Phantom with Michael Crawford. My desire to see the show is not strong enough to send me to a movie theater to see it with Antonio Banderas or anyone other than Michael. If he is not cast in the movie, I will make do with the Broadway CD. When will someone have the courage to make a choice for artistry?

I am a huge Phantom phan, and from what I have seen and heard, I am deeply disturbed by the fact that Bandaras will play Phantom. I loved him in Evita, but I have heard him sing Phantom, and he cannot sing Phantom. I might get mobbed for this, but I would really like Michael Crawford to play phantom, but I would still be happy if some other phanotm would play the role. Although, Michael would be the dream of a lifetime, anyone but Bandaras who has performed POTO is welcome.

I'm a great phantom fan and I don't be happy with the idea of a movie without Michael.
I'm an actor and I know that he is a theatre actor not a film one. But remember, the theatre actor have a 6th sense, he know when and how be a character.
Thrust me: THE BEST CHOOSE IS MICHAEL CRAWFORD.

Comments: I think that Michael Crawford should play the Phantom if they do make a big pic of POTO b/c he not only DID play the Phantom before, thus giving him more experience, but he is the right age for playing the Phantom, vs. Antonio's 20 year difference in it all. Also, for those TRUE MC fans, it would be an injustice to consider AB at all!!!

Comments: I read in the news again the other day Antonia Banderas may be the phantom. This would be such a shame. The only person alive to play the phantom would be Michael Crawford. If Lord Webber wants a success with this and a moneymaker he needs to reconsider this. I would never pay money to see phantom unless Michael was the phantom. Phantom Of The Opera is my all time favorite musical and I so hope it is not made with a person so miscast.

Comments: The use of a star from hollywood is useless when you have a man who is no doubt the best phantom ever! Michael Crawford would be an excellent choice for the role. If Warner Bros. wants this to be a great musical film, then the one thing that they absoulutly must have is the Phantom of the Opera-Michael Crawford.

Comments: I believe that Michael Crawford should be cast in the movie as was stated, integrity. Also, has there ever been a better Phantom? For once, could Hollywood do something that really has meaning and just not a fancy name to attack money, money, and more money? You are entitled to a profit, but wasn’t it Michael Crawford who made Phantom so big?

Comments: i am with you on this point-after sitting at home for several months, before seeing the actual play, listening to the music-enjoying the revelation that was mr. crawford's voice(i was familiar with his previous movie work, but didn't know he had this in him)when i finally saw him in the play,i was taken away by the emotions he shared with us-i've bought all his albums since then and saw him in concert recently-like you i pray he gets to play the role, but,i'm also well aware of how hollywood does things-yet,remember this-olivier was brilliant as hamlet, but so was burton-lugosi was memorable as dracula, but so was christopher lee-let's not forget all the great actors and actresses who have played iconic roles like these-you ask someone of my generation who the greatest bond was, they say connery-yet,someone twenty years younger might say brosnan-as to a boycott,i can't promise that-i'd still be curious to see if they do a good job with what is a great story-i love films, and the play, too much to pass up another chance to see it performed-sorry-

Comments: Michael Crawford has become so synonymous with the Phantom of the Opera, that to cast anyone else but him in the role of the Phantom in the movie would be utterly crazy. I have very recently become a fan of Michael Crawford and passionately believe he should be given the chance to shine in this role again. We have to make Hollywood listen.

Comments: When Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the Phantom of the Opera, he took careful consideration of who should play the roles, of which he chose he wife, and very talented actress, Sarah Brightman. In order to keep the originality of the magic of this musical, it should be played by a man who has passion for the role as well as known the character so well, that when he is mentioned, Michael Crawford comes to mind. Please take this into consideration, and know that you will not be disappointing viewers or losing any, but rather opening up a whole new generation’s eyes to the love of the theatre.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the creator of the role. Michael Crawford has sung it over 1,300 times. Michael Crawford’s voice has both the power and beauty to bring out Erik’s pain, brilliance, anger, suffering, madness, vulnerability, and ultimately his humanity. Michael Crawford’s voice is the one most associated with the role – not a hard sell. Michael Crawford has the stature and presence to inspire awe yet glean genuine sympathy. Michael Crawford is an older man – makes sense because he should be at least a man of Christine’s father’s age, maybe older – a lifetime of suffering which is the core of the Phantom’s character. Michael Crawford is a great actor who is infinitely more credible in the role than Banderas will ever be. Michael Crawford has the best chance to not only win Oscars, but also make this film a classic for the ages. Banderas does not have the VOICE!!! Banderas’ sex appeal will ruin the tragedy of the story. Which is why people keep coming back to it, and it destroys his credibility as a tortured soul whose own mother feared and loathed thanks to his hideous face.

Comments: Why would Warner Bros. want to surpass such a wonderful actor for a "big Hollywood name" who most likely could not do half of the fabulous performance that Michael Crawford would and could do? If the Phantom of the Opera movie was awful because of a bad performance by a Michael Crawford "wannabe" than it would not make as much money anyway, if that is the Warner Bros. motive. Be realistic and let a true Phantom star take their own place.

Comments: So they want to make another film of The Phantom Of the Opera do they? Well they are going to have a hard time in my opinion. All the previous Phantom films have been pretty awful. Their only hope is to cast Michael Crawford, because he is the only actor who could be expected to bring something of the atomsphere of the stage show to the big screen. I have seen several Phantoms and Michael Crawford is the only one who truly understands this character. Who on earth wants to see another Phantom film. But if it's like the stage show and has Michael Crawford, then it's worth seeing, it's worth spending the money to see it. It's worth buying the video. Come on Hollywood, get wise and give people something worth their while, instead of the usual rubbish you churn out these days.

Comments: Michael Crawford. Those two words are spoken, and shivers run down my spine. He has done so much for the world of music. His performance level will always be on higher than any singer or musician who steps up to the musical plate to challenge him. Night after night, performance after performance, but not phantom after phantom. Michael Crawford will always be THE angel of music... Now if only we could convince WB how disgrateful they are, by dissapointing millions of fans. We can do it if we try, just like the angel of music's voice was heard, because he tried. We CAN do this, don't give up hope, just believe in Michael Crawford, and do what you can to let your voices be heard.

Comments: It's been a while since I've been in here and I am back in here because in this weekends edition of "USA Weekend" (December 22-24, 2000) I read an article that made my jaw hit the floor as soon as I saw it, and I was hoping for a little clarification on this . . . The article is as follows . . .
"WHO's NEWS" By Lorrie Lynch (It's a Q & A article)
Q: Clear something up for me, please: Will Antonio Banderas star in the new POTO movie or not? And why is it taking so long to get it made? -Renay Banko, Bethlehem, Pa.
The sexy Spaniard will be the Phantom, over the objections of stage Phantom MC's fans. Banderas, 40 - whose wife, actress Melanie Griffith, is in well-publicized recovery from addiction to prescription pain and sleeping pills - cinched the part when he sang Phantom songs at ALW's birthday party two years ago. The movie now is a tiny step closer to reality. Lloyd Webber has chosen a director: Shekhar Kapur, who made Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett. At press time, they were looking for a "Stunning girl" to play Christine.

***************************************
Dear Gecko,
If you will visit Recent News on our web site, you will find an article dated December 17th, from the London Sunday Express that has much newer information on the Phantom movie. It is our feeling that the USA Weekend piece was based on much older news from months ago, and that perhaps Ms. Lynch did not verify the answer given before going to press.
Thank you for the post and information given,
TMCPMC

Comments: Hey, my name's Genevieve, and I'm 15. Let me tell you first off that Antonio Banderas (along with Pierce Brosnan) are my favorite actors. Antonio's been since I saw Evita (back in 1996). That's when I really started to become interested in movies altogether. But I've been an ALW fan even longer, since 1994 when I saw Starlight Express in London. But I guess what I'm trying to say is: I still AGREE with you all on this subject. Actually, it wasn't until I watched Antonio on the 50th B-day Celebration that I heard the whole Phantom song, and immediately I fell in love with it! Even w/ Antonio's singing, which to me is good, since I'm used to listening to the Evita soundtrack so many times. So anyway, I went and downloaded The Phantom of the Opera and of course came up with Michael Crawford's version. Well, I had heard of this movie AND of this campaign before hearing MC's voice, and now I see why you guys are trying so hard! To me, there's nothing wrong with Antonio, but MC's version is so POWERFUL, and so full of emotion. Whenever I listen to his voice in any song, I actually feel the music inside -- it's hard to explain. But the feeling I get when I hear Michael Crawford sing, I don't get with Antonio. So, without making this message too long, I'd just like to say to keep it up, as much of an Antonio fan I am, and I'm an obsessive one! Everyone in my school knows that Antonio's my favorite actor! I even named my dog Zorro after him for crying out loud! And he still is my favorite, but Michael Crawford is my favorite singer, and when I compare the two, I have to say that Mr. Crawford definitely deserves the part of Phantom!!! Even AB fans have to admit it! Antonio has so much other work, he doesn't even need to do this movie. (I don't even think he has time right now!)
So keep it up, TMCPMC, and have a very Merry Christmas! I can't wait because I had practically every MC album on my Christmas list!

Sincerely from an AB &!!! MC phan (I'm probably the only one is this entire world),

-Genevieve-

Comments: I read something several years ago that Micheal had already been casts to redo
the Phantom in the movie version. There
was some hangup about the producers of the play didn't want the movie out at the same time the Broadway play was still going. They could make more money that way. Also there was some hang up about Andrew's former wife playing Christine-she didn't want to do it at that time-something about she wanted to do more concerts, and record CD's instead. I have always wanted to see the Phantom of the Opera, but with living where I do and having a elderly mother to look after the chances of me getting to New York to see it is slim to none. I do hope they do something quick. They blew it with Madonna play Evita maybe they are scared to do the samething with the Phantom, which is a much better story than Evita. Well, I do hope this letter will help. If all possible could you keep me informed????
THANK YOU!!!! Bye for now.
A fellow Phantom fan,

Comments: I just want to say, ever since I played phantom of the opera on my flute in the school band, not even a teenager (still not), in 1999, I began to enjoy it, and in my voice lessons sang phantom of the opera. Then, i listened to the CD, and fell in love with the star of the show's voice. He's outstanding, and my dream has been to meet him all of my life. I only want to meet him, and as soon as there is a concert by him, I'll scream and call the friends of mine who share my idolation of him. I just wanted to thank him, even if he never visits this site, for contributing so much to the world of music. I couldn't live without it or singing. I read one of the guestbooks' entries, and everything is too true that he/she said: that Michael Crawford put so much emotion into each gesture. There will only and always be, one phantom: Michael Crawford. My dream, is too make a living on singing, dancing, and acting, and no matter what, I'm going to try out for every audition that I'm interested in. I want to put emotion into my work, as the phantom did.

Comments: There is only one true Phantom. Michael Crawford is that man. He gave a character on a page, Soul! He is the one who worked many tireless hours perfecting Erik. The amount of emotion that he puts in one hand jesture, is unsurpassed. You can read his facial expressions and his eyes even through the mask. He totally and completely gives his body, spirit and voice to this role. There can be no other for the movie. I have but one Christmas wish, next to World Peace, and that is Michael Crawford will be cast as the Phantom in the movie.

Aunque sea espańol, y un fan de Antonio Banderas (un gran actor), creo que no sería la elección más acertada para el casting. Un saludo

Comments: Occasionally in theatre, a musical comes along and becomes synonymous with a performer. Michael Crawford is the Phantom. He is an outstanding performer and is the only singer/actor who brought the required depth of passion, intensity, and pathos, and vocal quality to the role!! Many thousands will flock to see Michael’s movie portrayal. If he is cast in the role, I believe the movie will have the integrity it deserves. Without him, the potential for losing an opportunity to make a movie masterpiece is great. I write this not as a fan of Michael Crawford, though I admire his work greatly, but as a fan of great theatre, great acting, and great music. Please cast Michael Crawford as the "Phantom of the Opera."

Comments: For once in your lives, think about quality and not money. No-one is better to play the Phantom than Michael Crawford. Everyone knows that, just as they all know that Michael Crawford is the Phantom. You will have a failure on your hands if you cast Antonio B. Looks have nothing to do with this part, it is the voice that makes people love the Phantom not his face, and no one has a better voice than Michael Crawford.

Maybe its because Andrew Lloyd Webber is afraid that if we see Michael Crawford on film and then video, no-one will go to the theatre to see Phantom. That is not the case. I have seen it many times. Even though I know Michael is the Phantom, it will never stop me from going to the a theatre to see it, as everyone knows that you will not get the same feeling from a film or video as you do from a "live" theatre.

Please let Michael "do his stuff as only he knows how"!

Comments: I first saw The Phantom of the Opera when I was 17 at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto and I was impressed beyond belief at the performance that Peter Karrie gave. I recently went to Toronto to see it again and was even more impressed by the incredible performance of Paul Stanley. But there will never be a phantom better or more qualified then Michael Crawford. So I was appalled at the fact that he has not been chosen to be the Phantom in the upcoming movie. I have heard Antonio Banderas sing "The Phantom of the Opera" with Sarah Brightman...the only saving grace for that song was Brightman. Banderas has a voice that isn't fit for even the smallest part in Phantom. It is the voice that makes the Phantom and I realize you have to make money off this movie. But there are a lot of Phantom fans out there, millions of them...how do you expect to make money when none of those people want to see it? Because it is those fans whom you will get the money from. You will obviously cast whom you want...but Michael Crawford is the ONLY person who should have that part. If you put Banderas or some other so-called "money maker" into that part, your movie will flop. Good Luck...

Comments: I am a 16 year old MC fan who has been in love with the phantom since i was 12. I think it would be an insult to the original plans for the phantom to have anyone else portray him. Michael is the standard by which all other phantoms are judged and if a definitive version of the movie was to be made, it would be a failure with out Michael's participation in it.

Comments: The one name that comes to mind that can bring the Phantom to life on the big screen is the name that first did so on stage, Michael Crawford. He, more than any other, has CREATED the personality of the Phantom, both in acting and singing. His performance in the movie version would do so much for the story. Please consider bringing back Michael Crawford and allowing him to don the Phantom’s mask again.

Comments: The voice of Michael Crawford is as tied to the character of Phantom of the Opera as; for example; Martin Luther King Jr.’s is to the cause of human rights. If you had the opportunity to cast him in a movie to speak his own words, wouldn’t you do it? Especially if he was in the prime of his life and at the height of his power. Please capitalize on this golden opportunity to globalize the appeal of classical music, the music we forever associate with the most significant and memorable moments of our lives. I believe Mr. Crawford could help make the movie a truly unique and history-making phenomenon, and I would, of course, actively promote these in my spheres of influence to view and purchase this incredibly powerful work of art.

No other actor could ever reach the high and unique standard set up by Mr. Crawford. So, let the Phantom play himself in his movie, because any other actor could not keep up with the Phantom myth!!!

Comments: As the Phantom, Michael Crawford's performance was so passionate and real that Erik became someone with whom each audience member could relate. Erik became a loved one, an acquaintance, or even a piece of oneself that is kept hidden for fear of rejection. Michael Crawford achieves this with a voice that is uncomparable in power and quality.

Comments: Michael is by far the most appropriate man for the role of Phantom in movie format. He has proven himself a mainstay in the business time and time again. If Warner can't see the benefit of having Michael as Phantom, then let them wallow in the misery of thier movie failures. Should they not choose Michael, perhaps I could make an alternative suggestion: Ted Keegan. Go and find him.

Comments: When Phantom fans think of our beloved musical, we think of Michael Crawford. He is the voice on the Phantom soundtrack. He IS the Phantom. Why change that? Warner Bros. has nothing to lose by casting Crawford. But they will upset a great many fans if they do something stupid like cast some big hollywood name, thinking it will draw in more people. The fact that the musical tour is still running strong, returning to the same cities again and again, should tell Warner Bros. that they don't need a hollywood star to sell tickets. If they make the movie, people WILL see it. If they cast Michael Crawford, people will LOVE it!

He drew this Christine as surely as The Phantom drew Miss Daae. Any other actor will be a dissapointment. There have been other stage presences...Good men who took on the role...The feeling was not the same. Micheal is the Phantom.

Comments: Just to let everyone know, Michael Crawford plays a part in another Christmas CD entitled "Child of the Promise." Since he only sings two songs (as Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist), I only recomend it if you also like the musical style of contemporary artists like Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. Still, Crawford sings this part as he sings everything--beautifully. Merry Christmas to all of you fellow Crawford fans, and yes, even to Warner Bros., Banderas, and Webber (for I haven't boycotted them yet)!
