Comments: The first broadway soundtrack I ever heard was Phantom of the Opera. As soon as Michael Crawford started singing Music of the Night I was hooked. When I saw him perform songs from POTO live in concert, I thought I would die. The man is unbelievable! He's able to convince me that he is the phantom, even without the cape and mask. I've only had the opportunity to see POTO three times. If it were to be on the big screen, I'd see it at least once a week. But only if it was made right. With Michael. Putting Antonio Banderas in the film would be a joke. I enjoy him as an actor, but I'm not at all impressed with his singing abilities. I wouldn't see the movie once, let alone once a week. And I would convince all of my friends to boycott it as well. If you're not going to make the movie right, please don't make it at all.

Comments: The role of the Phantom should be played only by someone who truly understands the power of the character and his emotions. Michael Crawford was mesmorizing as the Phantom on stage and, in my opinion, is the ONLY performer who will be able to express and represent these feelings in the movie version. I was disappointed to learn that Warner Bros. was leaning toward another performer to play the part. I believe they would definitely have a box office hit if they stick with Mr. Crawford. I do not plan on seeing the movie unless he is chosen to play the part of the Phantom.

Casting anyone other than Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom would
be a great mistake. He created the presence we all recognize as the
Phantom--that which every other actor has imitated. He deserves the role,
and the public deserves his performance. The other casting possibilities
touted in the media are ludicrous. John Travolta can sing, but not well
enough to carry off the lead in "Phantom of the Opera." And why hide an
attractive young man such as Antonio Banderas behind a mask and disfiguring
scars, when he would make a fine Raul? Please, some common sense!!

My name is Leslie and I am a voice and flute performance major at the Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. I used a search engine and came across your site and I am so excited to see what you are doing. I was fourteen years old when I first saw the Phantom performed live. After being moved to tears and feeling such an overwhelming rush of emotion, it was at that point in my life that I decided to devote my life to making people feel the beauty I experienced that day. I can honestly say that the Phantom is my "Angel of Music" in that he inspired me to pursue performing as a career. After seeing the Phantom my first time I immediately ran out and bought the CD with the original London cast. Then I became a Michael Crawford fan. When Michael came to Cleveland's Gund Arena about one year ago, my mom and I went to see him. When he performed The Music of the Night and The Phantom of the Opera it was like Michael left the stage and the Phantom himself took Michael's place. There was this intense burning in his eyes that seemed to control and captivate everyone in the audience... I think the orchestra was even under his spell! The point I want to make is that Michael Crawford is the only person worthy of donning the cape and mask in the motion picture. Recently, I heard an ugly rumor that Antonio Banderas was cast in the role of the Phantom. Yep... I can see it now..."Sing once again with me, Seniorita, our strange duet..." right. I think whoever was responsible for casting needs to know that the play is set in the Paris opera house, not in Mexico. I have no problems with Mr. Banderas... he is a fine actor. But did anyone else see the broadcast of A.L. Webber's birthday bash? Who was he trying to kid? He is not the Phantom. Anything I can do to help your cause would absolutely thrill me beyond belief. My mom and I both love Michael Crawford and we both agree he is the only choice for the movie role. Just let me (and my mom) know what we can do to help. I don't have a clue how I managed to wind up on your web site, but I'm
extremely glad that I did. It was with great horror, fear, and revulsion
that I read about Andrew Lloyd-Webber's bizarre decision to cast the dreadful
Antonio Banderas in the title role of the "Phantom" movie. I only stopped
screaming long enough to write this--then I shall probably go on for days.

I wandered over your wonderful web site for an hour and a half, my eyes
getting wider and wider, and becoming more and more convinced that this has
to be one of the signs of the apocolypse. Terrified, I proceeded to call all
of my friends (some in theatre, some in the real world), so now there are
people screaming all over the tri-state area.

I put on my "Phantom" soundtrack and twitched.

I was fortunate enough to see "Phantom" the second week it opened. I was
having a lousy day--the train into New York was crowded and hot, I had a
fight with a friend, I was in danger of losing my job. But I had the ticket,
so I figured I might as well go. What else could possibly happen to me?

I was cranky all the way to the Majestic, where, in sitting down I muttered,
"Jesus, this had better be good."

I took a deep breath at the first note, and didn't exhale for three hours.
Well, it seemed like that. I'm not sure what happened to me among those
beautiful soaring notes, but I was not the same person leaving the theatre as
I was when I went in. It messed me up for days. I didn't want to talk about
it. Two days later, my body still ached from holding it completely tense for
the whole show.

I have nothing at all against Antonio Banderas. But if that man, or any man
aside from Michael Crawford attempts the role, it will not only be the
biggest musical debacle of all time, it will be the worst film anywhere,
ever. Just let me know how I can help.

Comments: There's an interesting rumor floating around a Phantom fan site. The rumor says that ALW is considering making two versions of the Phantom Of The Opera, a full movie musical, and a video of a stage performance. This would be the solution to the Antonio Bandaras controversy. Antonio can do the movie (which will flop), and Michael can do the video (which will sell millions). Everyone will be happy, except the people who invested in the movie, but they should have known better in the first place!

It is obvious that Banderas and role of the Phantom is not the right combination to make the music work. There is no greater musical role-musician combination than Mr. Crawford and the Phantom. Michael has been blessed by God with the talent to transport the souls of the audience into another realm, wonder-filled and as beautiful as the night itself. Comments: I think you are doing a job. Yesterday I saw Phantom on stage for the first time. I never thought I should be saying this, but....that magic cannot be captured on film! If they ever make a movie, I'll buy it as soon as I can get my hands on it. As for the part of HIM in a movie, no one but Michael Crawford should be in their minds. I saw it in Copenhagen and in Danish. I thought of it as blasmephy to sing it in anything else but English, but it was really good. And Flemming Enevold who played Phantom was phan-tastic. But the musical-movie, no one but Michael Crawford! My only concern is that I heard something about MC having a bad back, but hopefully he is over that.

Comments: While I was excited to hear that Warner Brothers is planning on making a movie based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera....I was distressed to hear that the role of the Phantom may go to someone other than Michael Crawford, for there is no actor in all of Hollywood that could play the part of the Phantom so well and so magically as Michael Crawford. Comments: Listening to the original cast CD of POTO is an emotional experience. Michael Crawford alone is passionate enough to play the role of the Phantom. The Phantom is part of his being and he makes it part of the audience's as well. If he is not cast as the Phantom in the movie version that passion and emotional experience will be lost.

While I adored Colm Wilkinson in the role, and think Antonio Banderas could probably be very good in it, there is only one who deserves it -- Michael. Although I'm not as phanatic about POTO as I was 12 years ago, when I saw it 7 times (Michael in New York, Colm in Toronto 4 times, and a couple of others in Atlanta)in 18 months, I still love it and play the music at least monthly, -- Michael was and is the only one who should be in the movie. I have one question -- is he still interested in doing it???

Comments: When I was seventeen I begged my father, who had a newly acquired private pilot's license (and I stress newly!), to fly me to New York to see "The Phantom of the Opera" before Michael Crawford left the show. Under the guise of wanting him to get more flight experience, I told him that New York would be a great trip (though I was more than a bit nervous as my dad had never made a trip even half the length of what I was proposing). But basically I would have said anything to get to see Michael Crawford. I mean, I knew that at some point in my life I could get to New York to see the show sometime before it closed, so the show itself wasn't what made me get on a dinky, twin engine, toy-looking thing of a plane. It was him. It became imperative that I see Michael Crawford as the Phantom after seeing him perform numbers from the musical on various television shows. Without him I knew it just wouldn't be the same show. I didn't know how right I was until I saw him do it. We had planned to go for a long weekend. We were going to see the show the night we arrived (I had purchased orchestra seats in advance for it) and then spend the rest of the time in New York sightseeing. After seeing Michael's performance that first night, I proceeded to wake up at 3:00am the next morning to stand in line for SRO tickets at the box office. I was so taken with the performance that I had to see it again. I did the same thing the next night. I have seldom seen such emotion and passion combined with pure technique in a performance. Michael Crawford was and is the only true Phantom. I firmly believe that there is such a thing as the marriage of an actor to a part. Michael Crawford as the Phantom is a perfect example of it. Like I said, I could have seen the show at any point in time and I might have even gotten around to it one day. But the only thing that made me jump on a plane risking my life and limb (let's face it, that was one scary plane ride) was to see Michael. If Hollywood thinks it needs a "big name star" to sell the movie, it can't get any bigger than the man who owns the role - Michael Crawford. And let's face it, even by industry standards he is known as the Phantom. His name is synonymous with it all over the world.

Warner Brothers, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Antonio Banderas will be severely criticized and mocked; no one will see the movie; and after a little while the whole thing will be forgotten just like all other stupid movies. Meanwhile Michael Crawford will live on in our memories as the legendary Phantom (and I'm sure there are more than enough bootleg videos to preserve his memory for posterity). He is the one who will be remembered whether you like it or not. Comments: Harrison Ford is 60, but no one in the world is going to tell him that he can't play Indiana Jones anymore. Heck, George Lucas even wants to make sure that Harrison OK's the script for the next Indiana Jones movie! Now if someone told him that he wasn't good enough anymore and that Antonio Banderas was going to be Indiana Jones instead, there'd be hell to pay. The same thing applies here; there are some classic legendary actors who are the only choice for certain roles, and there are some roles that young pretty-boy actors simply cannot play. Disasters happen when the classics are messed with, and those movie ideas are doomed from the very start--if Banderas is the Phantom, the result will be even more horrendous than the Grinch movie. Here's hoping that WB will listen to the voice of Reason amid all the nonsense that exists in Hollywood today.

Comments: I am a gret fan of the novel by Gaston Leroux. When I heard that there was a musical, I was extremely skeptical. After all, no man on earth could ever aspire to the greatness of the Phantom's voice as Leroux describes. For example, the Phantom had a certain trick he used which is analogous to the legendary sibylls; this trick involved being able to enchantingly sing in a hushed voice such that is between whispering, breathing, and singing--no one is able to do that. Then I heard Michael Crawford, and I was spellbound. I had thought no one could ever make the Phantom come alive as he did! And the whisper-like singing of the sibylls? No problem for Mr. Crawford! And now he is going to be replaced by whom? A Hollywood amateur singer? Whatever for? This is a disgrace! WB, Lord Webber, and Antonio Banderas are simply making fools of themselves.

Comments: I have spent a considerable amount of time on this, ever since my step-mother told me about the possibility of John *shudder* Travolta playing the role of Phantom. I have personally sent some letters, and bordered on spamming WB about their casting choices. I would really love to see Michael Crawford reprise the role, but if WB says no, it's going to be no! The only way to really stop it is the same way the "trekkies" keep that show going, by snail mailing them to death!!!

Personally, I think ALW made a big mistake going to WB in the first place, he should have gone to Paramount instead, or kept the filming in Europe like he did with Cats!

This musical can be put to film, if it is done correctly. WB has not really ever listened to the "fans" view on things. This is the real reason that I fear for this production. If they don't listen to the fans, it will flop! With all of the Phantom phans out there, word is bound to get out if they don't listen, and cast MC in the staring role.

Granted, despite what happens, I will see the finished product, at least once, because I missed seeing MC in NYC by a week, but was still pleased with the performance of the Phantom, and Christine, I have to give it a try. But I have to agree with most of you on one point, WB should really consider MC as the "name" for the movie.

So, would someone please let me know if and when casting contracts are signed, because then, and ONLY then, is it a done deal. This movie has been on the discussion table for years, and the production of Joseph, Cats, and JCSS have all been completed before Phantom, all because of the casting.

and lastly, IMO, I think Catherine Zeta Jones wouldn't be a bad choice for Christine, and that should also be enough for WB, MC and Catherine are both really big names, WB should stop poking around, and cast them already!!!
