Comments: The reason Lloyd Webber chose Crawford for the musical was because of his voice range and his perception of the character as a tortured human soul not just a meniacal menace to society. Due to his extraordinary track record and run as the original phantom, there should be no question about who the star of the movie should be.

Comments: While grabbing my cane, ready to limp out the door, I caught the Showbiz news on CNN yesterday, with the clip from the Broadway musical show that Michael was in the other night. It was the first time I had seen him since he was at the Crystal Cathedral last Novemeber. But his performance was electric, as Mary Ann reported. He and Julie Andrews looked like they were having the time of their lives. It gave me such a boost. I drove happily off to pick up my pills and have my blood pressure checked and felt on top of the world. I want him to star in the Phantom film (here, I stomp my foot, but in a ladylike way, mind you!) I don't want Banderas, I don't want Travolta, I don't want Hugh Laurie, much as I like him. I want the REAL PHANTOM: Michael Crawford. His voice gives me goose bumps, the nice kind, if you know what I mean. It's been a long wait for the movie, and some of us may not be around to see it if it ever does get made. But if Michael isn't in it, who cares?

Comments: On CNN showbiz Michael Crawford was seen singing and dancing with Julie Andrews from the recent Broadway Cares star studded event in NY. Even in the short segment that was shown it was obvious that Michael Crawford was in the role. His voice, gestures, etc. turned the song into a playlet which was a highlight of the evening. If he can make this short scene into a wonderful theatrical presentation imagine what he can do with the role of the Phantom.

Comments: Years ago, I went way out of my way to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I had already seen the Phantom in New York, but knew HE was the one to see as the Phantom. I had very little money, no transportation of my own, but was able to find my way to L.A. with a seat in the balcony to see Mr. Crawford. He was wonderful! It made all my months' planning and efforts worth it! I have since seen Phantom many more times and with great seats, but no performance has come close to Mr. Crawford's. In fact, there is only one other actor whose performance as the Phantom I enjoyed. During those performances I let the scenary, special effects and minor characters entertain me, when what I really wanted was to be moved by the performance of the central character. While I'd be happy to see the production made into a movie, I cannot imagine who could possibly best fit the role other than Michael Crawford. His performance is one that should be captured for all to see.

Comments: If everyone adopted Webber's criterion of sex-symbols only, Webber himself would not have lasted in musical theater for a second. It is time for him to pay the debt he owes to the theater audiences by giving us our Phantom, Michael Crawford, and no other. And those who have never been to the theater deserve to experience musical talent at its best. Webber should have faith in his own music (unaltered and written the way it was meant to be) to make this movie hit it big. He owes it to everyone to preserve this musical as it should be.

Comments: Hi! I'm a great fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and all of his plays. But my favorite, by far, is Phantom. I think it is the very best play ever written and composed. I absolutly love it. When I was surfing the internet and first found your site I was excited to hear that there was a movie in the making, but I was really upset when I heard about the casting. I signed up for the news letter and have been as active as I can (with how busy I am)and recently a friend of mine and I sent out letters to all the WB people and Andrew himself, which really blew me away. I really respect Andrew Lloyd Webber, I just don't understand why he is so stubborn about not casting Michael. EVERYONE knows that there isn't ever going to be anyone better than him. HE IS the Phantom. Well, anyway, I was writing to congradulate all your efforts. I think the internet is just amazing. I recently looked at the guestbook and there are so many people from all over the world who wrote in supporting the campaign. You all deserve a big round of applause. They cannot forget us while casting! We're the paying patrons!! Thank you for starting this... movement!!! It's all truely amazing! and as Michael/Erik himself would say, Bravi, Bravi, Bravissimi! __________________________________________________

Comments: If Lord Webber goes through with this treacherous plot to seat a Hollywooder on Music's throne, he will go down in history as the dirtiest traitor to popular music theater that ever lived! He owes his career, his estate, his success to us, the theater-goers. All of a sudden, now that he's discovered Hollywood, he may decide that he doesn't need us anymore. Well maybe we may just decide that we don't need him. Maybe, when his pathetic star-studded movie flops miserably and he comes crying back to the theater, maybe we won't take him back. The choice is yours, Lord Webber: either preserve the original theatrical Phantom on film, reward the theater-goers that paved your way of success, and make everyone happy for ages to come, or rebel against all that popular music theater stands for, take the mushy-middle that pleases no one, and face the dire consequences. See that you choose wisely.

Comments: Last night, October 16, 2000, at New York's City Center Theater, PBS taped a special called "My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs" for its Great Performances series. Michael Crawford was part of the extraordinary cast. From the reports I'm hearing, his moments on stage were some of the most memorable of the entire show. Once again he has proved his talent and magnetism with an audience, as he has so often in the past. Apparently the rest of the world recognizes Michael Crawford's star power. Why can't Warner Bros. and Andrew Lloyd Webber see it, too? If WB thinks that Michael Crawford can no longer draw in audiences, try this analogy. Imagine an art "expert" going to the Louvre and walking up to the Mona Lisa. He says: "Yes, very nice but it's old and musty. Besides, that artist has been dead for centuries and nobody cares about him anymore. Let's take it down and put up something more modern in its place. Let's find a new artist who might be really good one of these days." Make sense? Of course not!! Only an idiot would do something like that! Think of Michael Crawford's interpretation of "Phantom" as a masterpiece. No matter how long since he last performed it, he forever defined the role and he'll always be indelibly connected with it. Why take a chance on an unproven performer when you have the master still available? Preserve the masterpiece for all time while you have the chance!

Comments: No one will want to see this movie if the the lengendary Phantom isn't in it. It may be true that only POTO fans will know that Mr. Crawford is the legendary phantom, but why would anyone want to see it if not even the fans will go? We, the Phantom fans, are the testimony of this legend to the world, and if we abandon it, then the whole world will know that it isn't worth watching.

Comments: HAVING SEEN THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA HERE IN SAN ANTONIO AND LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL BROADCAST RECORDINGS ON A DAILY BASIS, I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT MICHAEL CRAWFORD WOULD BE THE ONLY PHANTOM WORTH WATCHING AND LISTENING TO IN A PROSPECTIVE MOVIE. HAVING SEEN MANY OF THE FILMS BASED ON THE STORY, I HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED ON COUNTLESS OCCASSIONS UPON DISCOVERING THAT NONE OF THE VERSIONS ARE MUSICALS FEATURING THE MUSIC OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER. NOW THAT JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT AND CATS HAVE BEEN FILMED AS MOVIES, I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO A MAKING OF THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, WHICH IS MY FAVORITE OF ALL MUSICALS! I SINCERELY HOPE THAT WARNER BROTHERS WILL CAST MICHAEL CRAWFORD AS THE PHANTOM. ANTONIO BANDERAS APPEARED ON AN ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER SPECIAL ON PBS AND SANG THE PART OF THE PHANTOM. LET'S FACE THE TRUTH -- HE IS NOT EVEN SECOND BEST. BANDERAS' ATTRIBUTES WOULD BE BETTER OFF IN A MORE "HOLLYWOOD" MOVIE AND LEAVE A PART, SUCH AS THE PHANTOM, IN MORE CAPABLE HANDS AND TO A PROFESSIONAL SUCH AS THE ONE, THE ONLY MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!!

Comments: How can someone who writes such beautiful music have such a lousy taste in actors? This is strangely reminiscent of the Hammerfilm POTO storyline. Lord Webber, open your eyes (or ears rather), lest people start to wonder who really writes the music. You had the right idea when you selected Mr. Crawford before, why make yourself look like a complete fool now by going back on your first omni-magnificent choice?

Comments: I was shocked that this whole situation is actually being compared to the clamor that arose when Audrey Hepburn was cast instead of Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady. No, this is Banderas, not Hepburn; at least she could speak with the right accent for the part. Had she had an undroppable Mexican accent, the movie would have flopped, and then it would be comparable to this situation. Banderas has nothing going for him in this role, except that he's a big Hollywood star. You might just as well cast Arnold Swartzenegger or Jean-Claude Von Damme; they'd fit in just as well. Only with Crawford as the Phantom and without those conceited Hollywood apes throwing a bunch of trash into the screenplay can this endeavor be saved.

Comments: Antonio Banderas or John Travolta as "The Phantom", you must be kidding. Bankable they may be, but gifted musically they are not. Michael Crawford brings depth and compassion to every word and note that comes out of his mouth. Not casting Michael Crawford as "The Phantom" in the movie version, would, I think, be considered the eigth deadly sin.

After hearing Phantom of the Opera, I have a conclusion that no one can sing Elvis Presley songs, nor the Beatles songs, or any other standard songs done by unique artists, therefore no one can do the Phantom as well or even close as Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman doing Christine. When you want the best you naturally have to have the best! I vote for Michael Crawford for this movie.

Comments: The first time I seen Phantom of the Opera was in Columbus Ohio. I am orginally from Ashland Kentucky where the opportunity of this type of art is rare to see. I bought the CD of the original cast of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. I have adored it since. It is a beautiful piece of art. I would love to have it on a DVD for keeps. I love seeing it over and over again. I already have the Les Mes DVD with costumes and the singing. I have been waiting for this movie/dvd to come out. In my opinion only one Phantom can play this part and it would be Michael Crawford. Only one Christine which would be Sarah Brightman. I have had the opportunity to see Michael Crawford in Concert last year. He was promoting On Eagles Wings which I have bought. Just recently Sarah Brightman just came to town and my husband and I had the opportunity to attend that concert. Now we can say we seen them both. To have both of them return to do this movie would be great. I vote for Michael Crawford/Sarh Brightman

Comments: Now that the "Phantom" movie saga seems about to reach its denouement, it has really focused my thinking. I'd like to share some of my recent thoughts (sorry for the length). This past Saturday I decided to play some of my favorite Broadway cast albums while I was working around the house. There I was, dusting and polishing, not paying much attention to the music, when suddenly I stopped, mesmerized by a beautiful song I have heard so many times before. I stood very still and listened and felt the shiver I always feel when I hear it. "Music Of The Night" sung by Michael Crawford? No, it was "Some Enchanted Evening" sung by Ezio Pinza. "South Pacific" opened on Broadway in 1949 and I can't even imagine how many other singers have performed that song since then, but Pinza's version is the definitive one. No one who has ever heard it in the past 51 years can be completely satisfied by any other version.

After the song ended, I stood there for a moment and thought about other songs and singers that affect me in the same way. when you consider how many shows there have been and how many performers have been involved, there aren't that many seminal moments--many good ones, quite a few great ones, but only a handful of truly perfect blendings of song and singer. Robert Preston and "Trouble" would be one. Rex Harrison and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" is another. Perhaps Barbra Streisand and "People." Certainly Yul Brynner and anything from "The King and I." And of course, Michael Crawford and "Music Of The Night." Try to imagine anyone else doing those songs. Impossible, isn't it? Anyone else is just an imitation. These are the true goosebumpy moments of the theater and they are rare gems.

This has been a roundabout way to bring me to my main point, which is that this campaign is ridiculous. It's not ridiculous because of its goal; it's ridiculous because it never should have existed in the first place. It's ridiculous that anyone should ever have to be convinced that Michael Crawford is the right choice--the ONLY choice--to star in the "Phantom" movie. It's ridiculous that anyone should be so shortsighted tha he thinks he can just drop any minimally talented actor into the phantom role and the public will meekly acquiesce to his decision and hand over their money to him by the bushel- and barrelful as they have done in theaters since 1986.

No, this is different. This is film, and it will be the definitive production of "The Phantom Of The Opera" that will be remembered for all time, Therefore it has to be as special as Michael Crawford made it on the stage. This movie won't be able to draw in audiences with special effects or a cute "buddy" relationship between its stars. It must capture and hold its audience with the poignancy of its story and the beauty of its music, both perfectly expressed by the passionate performances of its cast. How can a studio about to invest tens of millions of dollars in this project even dare to consider using anyone but Michael Crawford? His drawing power in the phantom role is unquestioned, and if the investors are looking for a sure thing, Michael Crawford is definitely their man. Michael Crawford was "the man" in the West End, on Broadway, and in Los Angeles. He is still "THE MAN" for the movie. His performance is one of those exquisite rare gems that deserves to be immortalized on film for all time. The audience that has supported this show with such loyalty and devotion all these years also deserves the best--and there simply is no one who compares with Michael Crawford's interpretation of this character.

I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful group of people who have carried on this "ridiculous" campaign with such dignity and passion. Our fight isn't over yet, and wherever the next few months take us, I'll be aboard to the very end.

Keep the faith!

He perfected that role and it would'nt be right for another actor to Mimic what he so creatively developed. Even my junior high students realize that! I'm sure the Sir Webber is too brilliant a man to make the mistake of doing otherwise, and he must know that with the success of the London and Broadway theatres that Michael will bring success to the Webber movie version as well.

Comments: Except for vampires and the human state of werewolves, why would anyone cast a sex symbol in the role of a classic monster? Let's keep the attractive stars in their place and give talented artists their due. Take Lon Chaney, Sr. for instance, or Boris Karloff, or Claude Rains as the Invisible Man--all of their faces were covered, none of them were famous heartthrobs, and all of them have become legendary nevertheless for their talent. Banderas's looks can best be placed elsewhere; Michael Crawford's talent for this role is obvious. This is a glowing opportunity to create a new monster movie classic--don't blow it by making such a grievous and obvious mistake. It's as simple as this: stick to the original storyline, and keep the balance between attractive stars and talented artists.

Comments: Hollywood has never been known for preserving the integrity of great stories and most likely it never will. We've seen ridiculous sexual content dominating Hamlet, Ichabod Crane made into an early forensic-specializing policeman, and Sir Lancelot putting on the airs of a conceited, immoral jerk. I don't expect Hollywood to get anything right, all I want to know is: where on earth did Andrew Lloyd Webber get such a stupid idea? Banderas as the Phantom? Whatever for? His name? The man is known for his face; cover the face and the name is meaningless. His popularity? Great movie hits are not made by famous actors, but by unknown ones--everyone knows the example of Star Wars. His voice? Not unless you want to resemble those Mexican guys in The Three Amigos trying to sing My Little Buttercup. I can hear it now, "Night time e-sharpens, heightens each e-sensation . . ." It's conceivable for the part of Zorro or Evita's Che, but not for a master of the art of voice control. Anyone who has heard Michael Crawford sing knows that God has given him a power in his voice like no other--the power of music that can pentrate all characters, all minds, all outward defenses and lay hold of the human soul. I believe I sum up all average moviegoers when I say that anyone would be better than Mr. Banderas, and no one could be better than Mr. Crawford.

Comments: Personally, I would like this piece of art to remain where it belongs...on stage. I have seen the Phantom of the Opera numerous times, in numerous cities, and resent the fact that anyone will have the chance to act like they understand the whole story when it gets released all over the country in a bunch of dirty, sticky floored theatres. The movie will never be able to pull an audience in the way a live performance does. I appreciate movies, but this is one story that you have to see in a real theatre. However, if it's going to be done, Michael Crawford should definitely reprise his interpretation of the Phantom. Davis Gaines would be a wonderful choice as well, but again, I would like to see this remain where it is - and to stay away from Hollywood's greedy hands.

Comments: I think Ben Eldon is pulling our collective legs. Nobody could be this stupid or egotistical. In his version of POTO - "The face matters"?!!!! Why does he think the Phantom wears a mask? Because he has pimples or acne and he was just waiting for the creme to work before he takes off his mask and show off his great tan? Eldon usually writes comedies, so maybe this one will be titled "A Night at The Phantom of the Opera". Too bad the great Marx brothers are not still around. They would have a field day with this one.

Comments: This whole idea of having a Hollywood Phantom is outrageous! Having worked with Micheal and Sarah, I can tell you that they are the only ones fit for the parts in such a captivating movie. You must preserve Phantom for all the ones who can truely understand his mind. (Myself included, having shared many performances with him.) And as for Antonio, the poor fool, he makes me laugh, ha ha ha ha ha.

If you really want the movie to have any appeal to anyone, you should have Michael and Sarah Brightman do it. On the other hand, if you want it to suck, ask Antonio to do it.

Comments: Phantom is the best musical in the world..and I was very excited to hear that a movie was in the process of happening. However, I don't care to see it unless Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are starrting. What would be the point of the movie if it didn't have the original cast? Crawford and Brightman touched the hearts of many including mine and I strongly think that they should have the roles in the movie. Antonio Banderas is talented in Evita and in general...but he is no Phantom. The role of the Phantom does not require an accent like his. I watched the 50th Anniversary and saw for myself, he is not and never will be the Phantom. Let Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman do the movie so that we all have a lasting version of the Phantom.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the only one person who could possible be the "PHANTOM" because he becomes that person. The movie would be a huge bomb without him. There are not many Entertainers Artist, Professional, perfectionists, around like Michael Crawford, the only other one I know of is Gene Pitney. They are both unique with remarkable voices. Surely ALW understands that this roll belongs to Michael Crawford. He is a Business Man, and if he wants to loose money and the Movie be a huge flop, then PLEASE do the right thing Sir.Andrew, and put in it the person who should be the PHANTOM...Don't let the Movie "grey suits" take over.

Comments: Hello, My friend and I wrote out quite a few letters for the campaigne today for the different addresses and people. I still feel strongly about having Michael Crawford cast in the role of the Phantom. I think that our voices do count, because we, afterall, are the people who will be buying, watching, renting, and recommending the movie. It is in their best interest to make it something we would enjoy. Besides, a man who has never actually performed Phantom onstage and actually lived the role could never protray the agonizing story of The Phantom of the Opera. Michael was the first Phantom and he deserves to go down forever in history as the Phantom. Then, years from now people can still watch the video and think "There was one extremely talented individual!" I think they should keep the Phantom movie as close to the Play as possible, because the more stuff they change, and the further they stray from the origional script, the less magical it will be... I am supporting Michael as the Phantom all the way! It will always be a good story, but why settle for a 'good' movie when they could cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom and make it SPECTACULAR! How many musical movie flops will it take before Webber realizes that Hollywood stars are not the answer? For crying out loud, give the roles to people who have some talent for singing the parts, star the real musical theater dudes themselves! Man, it's hard to think of a worse person to play the Phantom than Banderas. Webber-dude, there's only one thing you can do to make this thing fly--cast the Crawford-man, or you're in for a bummer, dude!

Anyone else will only fail at the box office. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas, he is a pretty good actor & very nice to look at..(remember, his face will be covered)but, he can & will not do the role any good. His voice is only mediocre at best. I heard him on Lord Andrew's birthday special. Mr. Crawford has won numerous awards for the role of Eric...why not give a chance to win an Oscar & win you guys megabucks at the same time?? Thanks for listening/reading.

Don't tell me what movie's going to be a hit; I've lived so long that I can smell a hit! Comments: I don't think that there should be any doubt as to Mr. Crawford playing the lead role, after all he created the Phantom just as much as the writer by bringing him to life on the stage, then why not on the screen. Michael Crawford is the perfect choice. His age should not come into play at all. Was not the Phantom a person who had lived many years under the opera house after performing many years in the house. I have never viewed him as being old or young, just a warm passionate creature so miss understood that it makes me cry everytime I see the play. And I plan to see it many more times in the future, but for true Phantom of the Opera fans there can be no other Phantom than Michael Crawford. He portrays the role with such dignity and grace that it sweeps you away into his world and you tend to forget about your troubles because they seem so menele compared to his. He made me fall in love with the Phantom and there will always be a place in my heart for him. My whole family would love to see him play the part because it would be so natural for him to do so. He would make everybody believe and touch many more hearts as he has touched mine.

Comments: I'm not a huge Phantom fan or anything, but I have read the book. An integral part of the story is that the Phantom is a master of voice. In order to show this in the movie, it is essential that the Phantom is able to flawlessly speak the language that the movie is in. I saw Banderas sing the part of the Phantom on TV for Webber's birthday celebration, and I must say, it sucked something monstrous. I got a doubly bad headache from laughing so hard and from listening to that poor fool on stage trying so hard to sing the part that was so impossible for him!

One example is "Evita" in which he portrayed "Che" a and did a fine job. But not matter how much training Mr. Banderas receives, he will always be of hispanic nature. The Phantom shold be portrayed by Mr. Crawford, not only because he has done the role before but because he is the ONLY Phantom of the Opera!!

If everyone in the world closed their eyes and tried to imagine the voice of the Phantom, not one single soul would come up with the voice of Banderas. If Warner Bros. goes through with this, the movie will be like Godzilla dubbed over in English. Everyone will know his voice is not right. He won't be able to get one line out before the entire audience errupts into laughter. If you want to make Banderas a comic figure, then stick him in a pair of clown pants; but don't you dare mess with our Phantom. I'll start a boycott so fast that those Hollywood buffoons will be out on the streets and penniless before they know what hit them--and not even another Pokemon movie will be able to save Warner Bros.

Comments: While Antonio Banderas might make a convincing Don Juan in the Phantom's "Don Juan Triumphant," he could never pass for the Phantom himself. The major, intense struggle of the story is that the Phantom is the opposite of a Don Juan and could never actually be a Don Juan. If you must have your Don Juan-like Hollywood big-name star, then cast Banderas as Ubaldo Piangi--at least then the audience will be able to recognize his famous face. As for the Phantom: there can be only one. Michael Crawford is the man, or rather, the Voice.

Comments: I can't understand why Michael Crawford hasn't already been signed up to play the Phantom in this film. After all he created the role and is such an obvious choice. Especially since Warner Bros. already stated back in 1990 that casting him would preserve the integrity of the show. Crawford's success as the Phantom was an integral part of the show's success. He is the actor most associated with the role after giving more than 1,300 performances in London, New York and Los Angeles and winning both the Olivier Award and the Tony Award, not to mention a long list of other awards. It is Crawford's voice that is heard on the Original Cast Album which has sold over 12 million copies around the world and continues to bring new fans to POTO on the strength of his voice alone. Music of the Night is HIS song (I know I can't bear to hear anyone else sing it). But the most relevant reason is that his performance in POTO was one of the most important and talked about performances in the history of stage musicals, and it is this performance that deserves to be captured on film for posterity for future generations to enjoy. I'm not against Antonio Banderas being cast in the film, but his ideal casting would be as Raoul not as the Phantom. It would be a disaster to hide his greatest asset - his good looks - behind disfiguring make-up and a mask. I've heard Andrew Lloyd Webber say he was disappointed with the film of Evita because he had to change some of the music to enable Madonna to play the role, as she does not have the vocal range of Elaine Paige. So why is he now so keen for AB to play the Phantom when he will clearly have to simplify the music to fit Banderas' limited vocal range. If WB and ALW dismiss this campaign thinking we're no more than a handful of MC fans then they are making a big mistake. We are fans of POTO, the very fans who have made the show such a great success. I would have thought we were the target audience, so why are they alienating us. Why not have us behind this film rather than against it. By casting Crawford as the Phantom and Banderas as Raoul they can have their so-called Hollywood star name whilst still preserving the integrity of the show. If they think that once the film is made we will forget our grievances and flock to the cinemas to see this film they are mistaken. If MC is not in this film, then I will NEVER pay to see it. I won't buy the video, the tie-in books or the merchandise, in fact I won't even watch it when it eventually reaches our TV screens, and I'm quite sure I won't be the only person to boycott it.

I think it extremely foolish of the casting to refuse the man who has brought the character of the Phantom to a level in which it was truly meant to be the right to play the part in which we owe our gratitude.
