I have all his CDs, autographed photo&CD.As far as I'm concerned he is and always will be, the Phantom. No-one can take his place. I don't care who it is. When he sings the songs, you can see, he becomes the Phantom. It's in his blood!!! I'm very angry and disapointed, that he wasn't even considered or asked. Andrew Lloyd Webber, what is wrong with you?! |

Michael Crawford is and always will be the *true* Phantom of the Opera. No offense to you, but do you think a Spanish phantom would look good in a Paris opera house? It seems kind of odd to me. But in all respects... You'd be very good for the part of Rauol, Christine's lover. Please do not take my opinions too harshly. I'm only giving an opinion of whom I think the true phantom is and should be. -Jessie Zuri Wahuni Fumbo -resident of the PrideLands community- TLKiaWoL! |

PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK......There is no other "Phantom" than that of Michael Crawford!!!!!! When Andrew Lloyd Webber cast Michael as the "Phantom" he saw & heard a talented stage performer that is pure GENIUS!!! He is the heart of "Erik", has the voice to be an "Angel", and has the features to portray the aged, disfigured, and tormented "Phantom"!!!! There is no other actor that can bring this role to life! No "Hollywood Glamour Boy" can pull it off!!!! The USA has no one that can compare! There is no other "actor" in the world that can be placed on stage in this role AND pull of the same role on film! I was lucky enough to live in england for four years & began to attach myself to the genius that was, & is, Michael Crawford!!! "Phantom" was his role to enter the worlds' stage & become noticed by all!!! Hollywood has a record of destroying good works of heart, for the sake of the film! DON'T ALLOW THIS TO BE ONE OF THEM...MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE "PHANTOM"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

DiCaprio might make a good Raoul if Michael was The Phantom. |

I have never seen him perform live but I have seen him perform "Music of the Night" on The Andrew Lloyd Webber Premeire video. The combination of his voice and body language puts you in a trance. The idea of Antonio Banderas or especially John Travolta playing The Phantom makes my stomach turn. |

He is the one who makes the Music of the Night. If Antonio Bandaras wants in, then make him Raul, but Michael is the one and only Phantom. I implore Sir Andrew to look at the entire cast and envision the movie without Michael. Can anyone even think of Rhett Butler without picturing Clark Gable? Come on, no one comes close to the quality of Michael Crawford's voice. |

Michael Crawford is the only possible choice. They will most certainly have a disaster on their hands if they cast Antonio Banderas or anyone else in the role. We will have the satisfaction of "I told you so" but that will be cold comfort indeed, when "Phantom" becomes the keyword for a hammy, ridiculous, embarrassingly bad spectacle. It is just so damned sad, that such a moving and evocative piece can be destroyed by ITS OWN CREATOR! Lord Webber must have lost his mind. |

Quite frankly, the only way to reach ALW, is through his bank account. He has 3 disasters waiting to happen. 1) Whistle Down the Wind 2)Phantom movie w/Banderas 3)Sequel to Phantom (with unknown actors). Only after the RUG is pulled out from under ALW, will he understand the power of his audiences which he is choosing to ignore. Maybe Lady Lloyd Webber won't think Banderas is so great when she can't afford to buy anymore ponies!!! Quite frankly, ALW's career ended when he divorced Sarah Brightman as he totally lost his inspiration for writing good tunes. I say let him file for Chapter 11, and the RUG will be folded. |

When I heard the rumor that a movie company was considering not using Michael Crawford as the Phantom, I thought I must be hearing it incorrectly. Michael is the only one because he is the Phantom. No one else can sing or act with the passion he has for this role. After all, isn't that why Andrew Lloyd Webber selected him, because he is the only one who can do it justice. I will join your crusade and get others to join in boycotting the Warner Brothers movies (in total) not just this planned one. This is a no brainer!!!! Not using Michael Crawford for the Phantom, is like some one saying Elvis Presley had no impact on Rock 'n Roll. |

I've always liked singing and practiced 2 hours a day,at least. So, for more than 4 years that I've known this magical peace of art, I've studied all about it: bought the complete CD, read books and watched movies about it and about Michael and Sarah , and more than anything I have studied it's script so that I could know it by heart. As a classical Ballet dancer and knowing about acting, I, in the age of 17, feel I'm totaly ready to "wear Christine's skin" and as her, I feel that there's nobady better to play Eric (the Phantom) than Michael Crawford himself. I'm not saying that I don't like Antonio, because I think he did a great work in Evita, but Michael just have this power over me that most of the time I just forget he is an actor. I'm signing my name her not just in behalf of Michael, but of Sarah and the whole original London cast that did such a great work, wich unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to see in the play, but I can tell by the CD and Lloyd Webber's video collection that has them in action. I apologyse for my bad english. Thank you for the attention. Adriana Martos Naccache. |

I will not see it if it isn't Michael. He has previous movie experience, and the transition would be smooth. The Phantom audience demands that it be he. Is this movie really happening? It's been years since the idea came out. I don't think anyone has quite all the components necessary to fill those shoes. Voice, maturity, grace, hand movements, and passion are needed-and he has them. To him, it's not just a stage role. He IS the Phantom. |

ONLY he fits the Phantom role to such an incredible degree of perfection. I have seen two other actors portray the Phantom on stage, and neither could approach the range and emotional power that Michael exudes. Neither of those actors had that certain presence that so completely captivates and transfixes the audience. Have Andrew Lloyd Weber and Warner Brothers lost their minds? Antonio Banderas or John Travolta over Michael Crawford? Michael Crawford, the Tony-award winner, the ORIGINAL Phantom? It's like being offered a glass of the very finest vintage wine and deciding that you'd rather have some watered-down Kool-Aid. That kind of thinking literally makes me sick to my stomach. If Michael Crawford is willing to do the part, and I'll bet that he is, by god he should have it. Warner Brothers, let the master win your movie an Oscar! |

Birge Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Owensboro, KY Time: 1998-06-28 00:28:56 Comments: So Lady Lloyd Webber thinks Antonio Banderas is sexy. What if she felt that way about Pee Wee Herman? Would her husband grant her wish and cast HIM as the Phantom? And Warner Bros. is supporting this idiocy? Are these people sitting on their brains? Why would someone want to tamper with perfection? Phantom fans have waited years for the movie version of this show...most of us greedy for the chance to see Michael Crawford anytime we want. I own every album the man has made, as well as videos of many of his previous films, TV appearances, and stage work. Even though I did not get to see him perform live in POTO, I thought I knew what he was all about. WRONG! A week ago, I saw him in concert and was completely blown away. Afterwards, I was ready to pack my bag, leave the husband, children, and grandchildren I cherish, and follow the rest of Michael's tour. Since that night, I get almost physically ill thinking that I will never have more than the teasing taste of Michael as the Phantom that I saw in the concert. For years I told myself, "Wait till the movie is made and you can see what all the raves were about." Well, the one thing I now know for certain about the movie is that if it is made with anyone but Michael Crawford, this Phantom fan--and countless thousands of others--will avoid it like the plague. My money will stay firmly in my pocket. ALW and Warner Bros. will never see a penny of it. What idiocy! Stupid, STUPID people!! Get this message loud and clear, fellas. If you give the role to anyone else, every note, every phrase, every gesture will be intensely scrutinzed and compared to Michael Crawford's performance. He was the original...and he was the best there has ever been or ever will be! If you and Banderas (or anyone else) have egos so big you think you can shove an inferior performance down the public's throat, just you wait. The critics and the fans are waiting. Think about it. |

Then I went to the store and bought the C.D. and I was blown away! I thought the show I had just seen had been great, but I had no idea just how great it could be. I bought the Original London Cast C.D. with Michael Crawford and his voice and interpretation of Erik has changed my life. I am now a member of the M.C.I.F.A and I think Michael is the only person who could do a Phantom movie justice. I know that if Michael is cast I will be at the theater opening day to see him, and I will go as many times as I can. | Name: Lori Herter Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Southern California Time: 1998-06-27 14:39:23 Comments: As a published romance/vampire author, I would like to add my voice to the growing number of supporters for Michael Crawford as the only man who should be considered to play the title role in the Phantom movie. I had the privilege to see him on stage in L.A. as the Phantom about 25 times. I've since seen others play the role and most were adequate to the task, but none evoked the dark, spellbinding sensuality or portrayed the heartbreaking love for Christine with such emotion as Mr. Crawford did. No one moved across the stage like him; no one else has his magnificent, eerie voice so perfect for the role. I believe Phantom would never have become the hit stage show it became without his influence and interpretation of the part, as he was there as the show developed from the ground up. He defined the role, and anyone else is just a poor imitation, as far as I'm concerned. Why ALW or Warner Bros. would even consider anyone else for the movie version is profoundly baffling and vexing. If Mr. Crawford isn't chosen for the film, then I will boycott it. It's his performance that should be filmed for posterity and not whatever younger actor is currently considered a hot box office choice. The Phantom, hidden behind his mask, is an ageless character, and I believe should be played by an older actor. After all, Christine confuses the Phantom with her father. A young actor singing, "Wandering child, so lost, so helpless..." to Christine doesn't ring true. The role calls for a man of maturity and great depth of emotion, and the only actor around who has that capability combined with a finely trained, magnificent voice is Michael Crawford. |

I have seen Phantom over 10 times all over the world. I was thrilled to hear that they were making a movie-naively assuming that Michael Crawford would be cast. Just think, I could watch him any time I wanted to.. I am so disappointed in ALW that he could even think of doing his masterpiece such an injustice. I know that I will refuse to see the film. Thank you for the addresses to write to. I can only hope that someone listens to us... |

But when the production came to Portland, Oregon in August of 1997, I wanted to take her -- she had never seen it inspite of being one of the biggest 'phans.' I enjoyed the musical, but didn't think too much about it. A few months later, I picked up my wifes CD of Phantom and began to listen to Michael Crawford sing. All I can say is, "unbelievable....incredible!" He has one of the most incredibleand unique voices I have ever heard! I quickly fell in love with Phantom of the Opera and Michael Crawford. And when I heard that John Travolta might be cast to play Phantom, I shook my head in disgust. Now, I do think that Travolta could be a fairly convincing Phantom as far as acting is concerned. But as for the singing? He couldn't touch Michael Crawford with a 10 ft, no, 100 ft. pole! And Michael Crawford can act as well, so what's Warner Brothers hang up? Besides, they need to be thinking of their own well being. If they cast someone other than Michael Crawford as the Phantom, there could well be riotings and someone just might get hurt. |

A. Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Plattsburgh, NY Time: 1998-06-25 10:57:49 Comments: I personally believe Michael is the perfect man for the role. The first time I heard his voice in "The Point Of No Return", I was hooked. I'd never really been interested in (or had been moved to hear) Phantom before that moment. I listened to it regularly and found myself loving it (his voice and the story) even more. Soon after, I bought the complete original London cast. I sobbed each time I heard the final, "It's over now, the Music of the Night!" From there, I couldn't buy enough of Michael's music, movies, and interviews. He created the role from a simple script, giving it depth, life, compassion, and dedication. Since, I have heard other versions but none could ever compare to the first. It would indeed be a travesty for an actor who can sing (or, rather, thinks he can sing) to get the title role. If the right man is not cast for the role, the audience won't care whether the Phantom lives or dies. If that happens, the film will have no hope of succeeding (regardless if the actor is "popular") and the theatre version will slowly die (which is a loss in and of itself). |

I do not think that the other two men have the vocal range that he possesses or the great stage presence that he beholds. I do hope and pray that the studio brass thinks twice before making their final choice. I was fortunate to see Michael Crawford in the roll when he was here in Los Angeles a few years back and thinking about those 2 shows makes me even more sure that he is the only one who can put on the tuxedo and the mask and make it all work. I'm hoping that with him as the Phantom everyone will be able to hear and understand The Music of the Night. Thanks for letting me give my opinion. |

However, when I heard rumors of Antonio Banderas starring in the film I became very worried. Don't be stupid Warner Bros., Cast Crawford and just his name alone on the bill will bring in people if that's what they are so worried about. If somehow they consider the integrity of the musical then cast the person with the best vocal ability for the role and whose voice is what has set the standard for the performance of the music. |

His name is paralleled to the Phantom. He set the standard, and established the part of the Phantom of the Opera. In my opinion, Mr. Crawford is the greatest tenor to ever grace the musical theater stage. Mr. Crawford is the most experienced out of the candidates. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not believe Mr. Banderas has mesmerized audiences in three major cities for over 1300 performances as the Phantom of the Opera. |

It is inconceivable that anyone would consider making a movie without him and either Sarah B or Dale Kristien. Or any other good leading lady, BUT only with Michael!!!!! He has us so spoiled we can go to no other Phantom production, even San Francisco's, without wishing Michael were there instead of Franc or ?. The movie and video sales HAVE to be greatly enhanced with Michael's presence and draw. Even those unfamiliar with him (unfortunately they do exist) would soon catch the magic. It's like a slap in the face thinking of a movie without him. I could go on forever, but I'm 100% for Michael in the movie, but without him I personally wouldn't see it, even for free. |

Lampert Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Pittsburgh, PA Time: 1998-06-23 14:07:11 Comments: How can I say what an impact the Phantom of the Opera and Michael Crawford has had on my life? How can I put into words the sheer sorrow and sympathy I felt upon hearing Mr. Crawford's longing voice reach out to me through my stereo speakers? I never saw the man perform the role live -- a mistake I may very well regret my enitire life -- but I knew from just his voice that the performance was spectacular. Indeed, as I read reviews some four years after they were written, I saw that my assumption was not incorrect, but horribly understated. The man is the role and there is not a person who saw him in London, New York, or Los Angeles that will tell you anything different. I'm frequently reminded of Rex Harrison when I consider all of this movie mayhem. I am so eternally grateful to Hollywood for putting that man's wonderful performance in film because he is truly one of the greats as well. Likewise with Phantom, I want to sit around the laserdisc with my grandchildren, pop the movie in, and tell them all about a wonderful man named Crawford who changed the lives of so many and was almost denied the role. Please, don't break my heart. |

The reactions of the fans towards the casting will have a great effect on how much profit is made; not that most true fans are concerned with profits, they're more concerned with how well such a powerful story is told. Phantom is a story that many people world-wide know and can some how relate to, it's a story that doesn't deserve to be chopped and masacred just for the sake of industry. As far as casting, tell me, how important are fans going to feel if they think their voices don't matter at all? |

You must be joking. It would be like the King & I without Yul Bryner! Michael Crawford absolutely has the prestige required for the role. It would be an insult to movie veiwers & those who have supported the Really Useful group by seeing the live show or purchasing recordings to put some one else in the lead role.If Crawford is not cast I for one will be disapointed. Having Crawford immortilised on celluloid will give those of us who were not fortunate enough to ever see him in the role a once in a life time chance. I have seen the Phantom twice now.Once in Australia & once in New Zealand. Both productions were certainly admirable & the casts talented. Still I walked away from both saying " Wouldn't it have been great to see Michael Crawford, he's the Phantom personified". |

If you have seen him in the play or performed songs from the play (which I know you did) then you know who you have to cast. Michael will take an Oscar for this performance as he did the Tony. His voice is synonymous with the role; it is PERFECT for the role. The sort of strange, eerie sadness that his voice can convey can simply not be touched by any other singer I've heard. So many hundreds and thousands of people associate Crawford with the Phantom of the Opera, it is quite farfetched to believe that the movie would not have mass appeal simply because he is not a big-name screen star. It will be a TRAGIC shame should Warner Brothers decide against him. |
