Antonio Banderas can play Raoul. Antonio's voice is nowhere as good as Michael's. |

I saw Michael in Barnum when I was just 13 but unfortunately didn't get to see him in Phantom, however, I do have all his music and have seen him several times at the BIC in Bournemouth where he ALWAYS gives a spellbinding performance. I love the man! I did see Peter Karrie in Phantom recently at the Mayflower, Southampton and, I have to say, he was pretty excellent. However, after several attempts at the Phantom movie (I saw the one starring Robert England ("Freddie Crueger") I feel strongly that the smash needs the star who helped make "Phantom" so hugely successful. That is, of course, if Michael agrees.... |

| Name: Katie Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: California, U.S. Time: 2000-04-21 09:24:13 Comments: I have written here many times, and out of all my entries if this doesn't get to Andrew Lloyed Webber I don't know what will! This is the first time I have had enough time to tell this story, so prepare to read a long one! In October of 1999, I got sick with a horrible illness called Whooping Cough. Even though I have had immunizations in the past for this as a child, the doctors said the immunitzations eventually wear off and I just happened to get it from someone. Anyways, I was going through my own personal hell, I was trying to keep my grades up and my social life, while at the same time I continuously coughed and went into these coughing fits where I couldn't breathe. When I was at home I found one of my mother's CD's entitled "The Phantom of the Opera." I had read the book, so I thought it would be interesting to listen to the CD. As soon as I turned that CD on, I began to drown in the music that surrounded me, I forgot about everything and just listened carefully to this wonderful music I had never in my life could say I heard anything like. I heard the power and the gentleness of Michael Crawford's voice, With the beautiful harmony of Sarah brightman in the Angel of Music, I listened to the beautiful music and Michael's voice in the Music of the Night, I heard the power of the song The phantom of the Opera. I was just amazed! It was my only escape from everything, and as a month went by I was still sick, my friends thought I was dragging it on..........I was missing school.........everything was going wrong! But as soon as I turned on the soundtrack, It was a cure, an escape! The voice of Michael I must say was heroic, sweet, glorious, incidious, delicate, powerful, and triumphant!!! Michael could run laps around Antonio!!!!! Please, I have never gotton to see the play for I am only 13 and was just a baby when he was playing the part! I need to see him in the play, the soundtrack just isn't complete! I cannot see the play with the original casting in it now, and you can't blame me for being born too late! I know there are many other fans out there my age, and they were born too late too! You NEED to cast him to attract to attract people to the theatre, not a spanish hunk with an accent!!!! I will always love Mr. Webbers work but he has to live up t his title as a genius! I used to idolize him, now if he doesn't cast Michael I won't know what to think! |

Rumfellow Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Baton Rouge, LA Time: 2000-04-21 09:13:46 Comments: I'm so grateful for the opportunity to add our vote and voice for something so seemingly insignificant on the surface of it, but which means so much to so many of us in our hearts. Phantom of the Opera has become a special part of our lives and our culture. The opportunity to create an "official" film of Phantom, endorsed by Mr. Webber himself, will not come twice. It would be very sad for a world of people, who have been deeply touched by the performance of the original cast on the soundtrack and disappointed by many other performances of the same musical, to be handed the ultimate disappointment of spoiling the legacy of the production with inferior talent, when the best is willing, available, and performing as well as or better than ever. The world will not end if Michael Crawford is not the phantom in the film, but I think the world would be denied a certain additional richness and magic that his performance captured on film would provide. Thanks to Mr. Webber for a wonderful musical, to Warner for finally proceeding with the film, to both for listening to those of us who care enough to express our hearts on the matter, and especially to those who have invested their lives and resources to advance this crazy campaign. God bless! |

When I heard they were making a movie I was really excited because I thought I would be able to see and hear Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Then I heard Antonio Banderas was trying to play the part of the Phantom and I just couldn't believe it. I mean what are ALW and WB talking about? So make all of the Michael Crawford fans dreams come true and put Michael in the movie. And make me happy too. Thanks, Jacob |

| Name: Melissa Bashardoust Website: Referred by: Geocities From: Los Angeles, Ca Time: 2000-04-17 01:46:22 Comments: Dear Mr. Webber, Warner Brothers, or the Really Useful Group, I must say, I am one of the younger fans of Phantom (12 years old.) I first the Original Phantom Recording at a friend's house. I was completely breath-taken! I requested the CD for my birthday, and I got it. The same wonderful sensation swept over me, when I heard it two months later. I listen to it at least once a day. In fact, I am listening to it now. ("The power of the music of the night!") I have been moved to tears more than once. Ever since hearing his miraculous voice, I have longed to see Michael Crawford's passionate version of Erik. Since I am unable to do this, (I was three during his last performance in 1990) my eyes brightened to hear of a film version of this spectacular musical. Then a coldness seemed to sweep over me as I learned that Antonio Banderas was to play this role. I am not shunning Mr. Banderas, just promoting Mr. Crawford. All *I* ask of you, is not to shatter my hopes and dreams of seeing Michael Crawford in this role. He WANTS to play the Phantom, WE want him to play the Ph-antom, I want to see him play the Phantom. I assure you, a big name willl not have any effect on people flocking to see this movie. The people want Michael Crawford, and will except nothing less. Please, do not see this letter as angry or threatening, just see it as a plea from a 12 year old girl who is dying to see Michael Crawford is the role that immortalized him. In case you haven't heard this before, Clark Gable got the part of Rhett Butler by millions of fans requesting him. Please repeat history, and let the original Phantom take his place in the center of this film. Did not Andrew Lloyd Webber say that Michael Crawford was his first pick for the film himself? Wasn't Mr. Crawford originally signed up for this role? I don't know how HE feels, but I would feel rather hurt and angry at the same time. Please, if this is not possible, then at least tape the original stage version to stop my hunger of seeing Michael Crawford as the Phantom. If he is in this role, than I promise to see the picture AT LEAST twice! "Can you deny us the triumph in store?" |

I really think this campain is important. I saw POTO about 3 years ago when I was 15 and it has completly changed my life. I'd never really been to the theare before, and now I am there everytime a new musical is in town. POTO lead my life in a new direction. I decided to take Drama at school, to help with the school plays, to go to more plays in general. Also, because I am taking drama, I came out of a very thick shell that I never thought could be broken. I think it is only fair that everyone gets a chance to see what a wondeful show this is, and the best way to show a wonderful story is with WONDERFUL actors and SINGERS (Hint hint) I have never seen MC live, though I have seen his videos and own the OLC of POTO, and I belive that he is the ONLY one that can fill this role. Antonio Bandaras isn't a bad actor, I am not saying that at all, but I have ALW's 50th B-day Video where Antonio sang POTO with Sarah Brightman, and not to be mean, but it was BAD! I don't know what it was about it, but I just didn't like it. When I saw "MC in concert" and he performed POTO and MOTN, I got shivers because he put so much emotion into it. You can really tell that he puts all he has into the role, and that he has a deep respect for Erik(the Phantom) and for the music. Now if only WB and ALW would be the same way! |

It would be highly disturbing for loyal Phantom of the Opera fans, the people who are garenteed to be first in the box offices, to hear such an evident Spanish accent from the Hollywood actor. It ruins the mood of the story as people would be thinking more about how much his voice differs from the true Phantom (Michael Crawford) then capturing the true essence of such an acclaimed story. The movie would be ruined and the spirit of the play broken. |

Oh, yea, we can rewrite the story, dialog, music, and add subtitles." Time is money - duh!) 5) You want to hire a guy because he's young, good looking, and has an LA tan and then you are going to have him encased in a ton of make-up to play a character who is 50ish, pale (you are keeping the labyrinth idea, right?) and deformed. So what's the point? I could keep going but time is money - duh! |

I find no words to describe what I feel when I hear him. It's like magic. My adventure with The Phantom of the Opera started with the book by Gaston Leroux. The story of the Angel of Music - defaced Erick, who falls in love with Christine moved my heart. Then I got know that Andrew Lloyd Webber had written the musical ( I want to explain sth - I live in Poland and A.L.Webber, Sarah Brightman or Michael Crawford are not so popular here as they should be - what a shame!! ). I asked my English teacher to buy me "The Phantom of the Opera" CD in England, and she did. The day I kept this Cd in my hand was the happiest one. If I could meet A.L.Webber I would ask ( even begged ) him not to shatter my dreams. I can't imagine Antonio Banderas as my beloved Phantom. He is a good-looking man suitable for playing Lation - lover ( it is my humble opinion ). It is true that he sang in such films as "Evita" or "Desperado" but it's not enough, not enough for playing Phantom. I hope that Mr. Webber will get wise!! After all miracles do happen sometimes. Of all the actors I've seen in the role (three so far) His was by far the most compelling. The roll is ageless and so does not require a young actor or a "Hollywood Name". I strongly support the return of Michael Crawford to his rightful place as the star of this film and to the role that he was born to play. |

Nothing against Antonio...but I have heard him sing and he does NOT have the voice for the part. If they are going to go far out and not cast Michael for whatever reason...then the next logical choice would be Sam Harris who has starred in one of ALW's productions. I could die happy if I saw him live as the Phantom. No one else is acceptable. And what is this I've been hearing about Antonio Banderas? The man cannot act and can hardly speak English. I have heard him sing as the Phantom; it's not pretty. |

It looked as though Lloyd Webber took the same approach with that as he did with the film of "Cats", giving it more of a stage production look but using the original stars from the production (i.e., Elaine Page as "Grizzabella", Donny Osmond as "Joseph"). Those were the people who made these musicals hits! So my point is, in order to protect the integrity of "The Phantom of the Opera" it should star Michael Crawford as the lead role and take more of the stage production approach. That's what made "Phantom" such a hit in the first place, right? |

THAT'S DISGUSTING! MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE ONLY CHOICE, AND IF HE REFUSED TO PLAY THE ROLE (WHY HE WOULD I DON'T KNOW) THEN ANOTHER BROADWAY PHANTOM, SUCH AS HUGH PANARO, SHOULD BE CHOSEN. ALSO, ANTONIO BANDERAS IS SPANISH, THE PHANTOM IS FRENCH! ALSO, THE POINT OF HAVING ANTONIO PLAY THE ROLE IS BECAUSE SOME DITZY LITTLE MALL GIRLS MIGHT GO BECAUSE HE'S CUTE, AND YOU WON'T EVEN SEE HIS FACE! WHAT'S THE POINT! AND DO WE REALLY CARE IF DITZY MALL GIRLS WHO HAVE PROBABLY NEVER SEEN A BROADWAY SHOW IN THEIR LIVES EXCEPT POSSIBLY ANNIE OR FOOTLOOSE LIKE THE MOVIE?! NO. WE DON'T. I THINK THAT ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER IS A TRAITOR TO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. DOESN'T HE REALIZE HOW TERRIBLE THIS IS?! THIS WOULD BE LIKE HAVING LEONARDO DICAPRIO PLAY JEAN VALJEAN IN LES MISERABLES. He brings a magic to this character that no one else can. He is a master of his craft and seeing him work is no less than extraordinary. To place anyone other than Crawford as the lead would be depriving the audience of the true essence of this story. Without that you have only a fraction of the mystery, emotion and suspense that this story encompasses. |

Sorry, but Mr. Banderas's rendition of this song sounded more like Ricky Ricardo singing it. How could anybody with an ear for sound let this happen to such beautiful music?!! My ears hurt!!!! I am outraged at the thought of Mr. Banderas taking on such an enormous role, his voice just does not have the capacity to carry it, let alone do it any justice. Antonio was ok in Evita, however, I would not even like to see him cast as Raoul- please, find someone else! Think about this: Would anyone in their right mind cast Antonio Banderas as the phantom on Broadway? I think not!! Please, please would somebody with any sense do what's right(both because Michael IS the phantom, and because this movie,if made with Banderas will probably flop) and cast Michael Crawford? Mr. Crawford, I hope you will once again get the chance to be "phantom", you are the one and only true phantom in my heart. |

I am more concerned that someone will chose Antonio Banderas for this role - he sang at ALW's birthday concert and was awful! He can sing passably, but not in any way suitably for this role. His accent is too strong and you cannot understand the words he sings - apart from the inspiring music, some of us believe the words are important too! His acting also leaves a lot to be desired. The role of Phantom is more than just words and music - it is a portrayal of a whole being with all his intensity. |

When was the last time thousands of fans voiced their opinions loudly and clearly, giving you the gift of knowing what we want before you make it? How can you ignore us? The making of The Phantom of the Opera has grown outside the boundaries of just another movie...grown incredibly from the germ of an idea that once grew and was nourished by the genius of ALW's composition talent...into an amazing story of love and heartbreak that set the imaginations of the world afire. You didn't suspect what it would be like when you gave Michael Crawford the role to shape and make his own. The musical is so highly sucessful today BECAUSE of that power you gave to him. I beg of you, on behalf of all fans....please, please don't desecrate this work of art. If you want to capture the spirit of the story, there is only one name you can possibly consider. I have seen every movie version of it made, read every book, seen Mr. Webber's 5 times, and seen 2 other versions twice. I do not wish it to be made into a Hollywood movie though. It is fine as it is. I love the play and music, but if you expect Mr. Banderas to sing in it, that's, I'm sorry to say, not one of his strong points. I enjoyed him in Zorro, and the 13th Warrior, but I couldn't bear to see him portray Erik. The Phantom of the Opera originated from France, and a French phantom with a Spanish accent wouldn't go very well in my humble opinion. Thank you. |

I heard that they want Antonio Banderas to play the part because then all of the females will go to see it. That is SO stupid because if Antonio plays the Phantom, you will never get to see his face anyway! It would make more sense if they put him as the role of Raoul or someone like that. Michael Crawford hasn't lost his talent and is still perfecly capable of playing the part. I think Warner Bros. needed to be slapped upside the head in order to knock some sense into them about who the true Phantom really is. |

Laura Liems Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Antwerp, Belgium Time: 2000-04-01 17:49:48 Comments: Hi! Although I have unfortunately never seen Michael Crawford as "The Phantom", it is my opinion that someone who has played a character for so long (and so well, from what I hear!) is much more suitable for the film role than someone like Antonio Banderas. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas as an actor, but you must agree with me that he is no Phantom. First of all , Antonio cannot sing. If you listen carefully to "Evita" you'll hear that! Secondly, the guy is much too short to play Erik. If he stood next to me, he'd look like my kid brother. Thirdly, with all due respect, the Phantom is supposed to be French (or at least European-looking) and not Latino. And last but not least. If you have someone like Banderas (someone who millions of women drool over mindlessly) play the Phantom, the story loses the drama, that of a deformed genius desperately in need of love, since the audience will just see a pretty boy behind a mask! And I am sure this goes for most Hollywood hunks they would probably like to cast for the role because of the $$$, but what might be good for the box office, will be a disappointment to thousands of real "Phantom of the Opera" fans, who want to see the story keep its drama, passion, sensuality and its message, so that future generations will get to see the story as it was MEANT to be. And I must say that I am very disappointed in Andrew Lloyd Webber , that he of all people would allow such a thing. There, I said what I wanted to say for so long! |

While singing?), I cannot understand why Warners or Lloyd Webber would even dream of replacing him as the lead in the film of "Phantom of the Opera". Where were those WB execs when "Michael Mania" was rampant in LA? Surely they must have seen the production either there or in NY or London. And ALW knows what a huge box office draw Michael Crawford is. He literally stole the show from Sarah Brightman, for whom it was written. And it was Michael who won the awards, wasn't it, although he was only onstage for a half hour or so? No other actor/singer has come near to equaling that performance, no matter how closely they have copied it. And all of the Phantoms since MC left the show have copied, or tried to copy, him. Why use an even poorer copy in the film, one who can barely sing, when the real, authentic Phantom is available? Especially when he is the one that the POTO fans want to see, and HEAR??? Can WB and ALW really expect to make big bucks on a Phantom movie without the real Phantom??? Are they in for a big surprise!!!! |
