Comments: I had the immense pleasure of seeing Michael Crawford as the Phantom on Broadway. I can imagine no one else in the role and would not purchase a ticket to a Phantom movie if it starred anyone other than Michael Crawford. The idea of casting anyone else is silly. Antionio Banderas? Give me a break!

Comments: Please direct your attention to YAHOO entertainment news. I am sad to say that according to Reuters, Antonio Banderas has been picked for the Phantom movie. It bums me out that with all of the talent in this world, that ALW did not pick Michael Crawford, or any unknown auditioning actor with a better range than Banderas (should be easy to find). Thanks, Steve Carlsen

Hi Steve, the word tentative was used in this article and so far there has been no official announcement of anyone signed. We have been through this time and time again, we will just have to wait it out and see what the future holds. Thank you for visiting and sending your support.

Comments: I think, if there is to be a movie, that auditions should be held in order to find one who could portray the Phantom in his highest splendor. Trust me, I have someone in mind, however Michael Crawford would be an excellent stand in!!! The Phantom shouldn't be made into a movie but if Hollyood wants to be its usual annoying self and rip apart his memory, I'm not for it! But, all in all, if Hollywood is going to go ahead and enrage hundreds of people, then Michael Crawford would hold the best title.

Comments: Thanks for all your effort to get WB to cast Michael. No one else can play the Phantom. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I won't see the movie unless Michael stars. I've also told my loved ones that if they go see POTO without MC starring I'll never speak to them again :) Thanx again let me know if I can help.

Comments: personally I would like it if there was no movie version made (mainly because of the dissapointment with the film version of evita, and would not want that to deter people from the story of phantom) if it is made a film though, the original phantom must be doing the role again, michael crawford is the only one.

Comments: I am in full support of this campaign. michael Crawford has been a role model for me in my amateur acting/singing pastime. i admire his professionalism and his ability to go below the surface of the lyric and bring out new meaning and nuance. The Phantom belongs to Michael Crawford and Lon Chaney and as the latter is currently otherwise engaged, there is only one choice.

Comments: The first broadway soundtrack I ever heard was Phantom of the Opera. As soon as Michael Crawford started singing Music of the Night I was hooked. When I saw him perform songs from POTO live in concert, I thought I would die. The man is unbelievable! He's able to convince me that he is the phantom, even without the cape and mask. I've only had the opportunity to see POTO three times. If it were to be on the big screen, I'd see it at least once a week. But only if it was made right. With Michael. Putting Antonio Banderas in the film would be a joke. I enjoy him as an actor, but I'm not at all impressed with his singing abilities. I wouldn't see the movie once, let alone once a week. And I would convince all of my friends to boycott it as well. If you're not going to make the movie right, please don't make it at all.

Comments: My daughter and I feel that a movie version of "The Phantom of the Opera" would not be worth seeing if it did not have Michael Crawford as the Phantom. My daughter has grown up with the original cast recording and knows all the parts and songs. She first heard the music when she was 7 years old and is now 18. What I would like to see is as many of the original cast as possible for the movie. It is something that will live on and on. Many people could not see the Phantom when Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were starring in the musical. I have seen the touring company and once on Broadway but not with Crawford and Brightman. When you think of the musical you automatically think of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. It couldn't be any other way. Sincerely, Donna & Jennifer

Comments: I would like to explaim what Michael Crawford playing Phantom of the Opera means to me. About 15 years ago a neightbour lent me a set of tapes that she had copied from her daughters LP records. When I heard them I just had tohave a set for myself. The Phantom of the Opera became my favourite piece of music and my total ambition for the next three years was to the Phamtom. Unfortunately, at Phantom was still being performed in England and there was no talk of it coming to Australia. When it finally did come I wondered how on earth I was going to see it as I lived in Newcastle, NSW and Melbourne was such a long way away. Thanks to the loving co-operation of my family knowing how much it meant to me I was able to go on a weekend coach trip down to Melbourne in 1991 to see Anthony Warlow as the Phamtom of the opera. Since then it has been my priviledge twice more th go and see Phantom of the Opera and even though I think both Anthony Warlow and Rob Guest both did amight performance I think Michael Crawfords voice as the Phantom is 100% and the feelings he puts into his performance from his opening line of "Insolent boy" to his last line of "Its over now the music of the night" will never be repeated by anyone else.

Comments: Just had to share this cute story--Last week, I was at my brother's house, and after dinner we were sitting in their living room. My sister-in-law had a copy of The Complete Phantom of the Opera, sitting on her coffeetable. My 4 year old nephew, Andy, who loves books, began turning the pages. We started to tell him how deformed and sad the Phantom was, when he came to the page where Michael is having his makeup applied. The first photo shows him without his makeup, to which Andy replied, "He's not scary, he's a good looking guy"!!!

He is the best phantom and should be in the movie. Age is not a factor - voice and presence are factors. I don't expect that we would bother to see the movie in the theatre without Michael Crawford.

Comments: I was in love with the Phantom of the Opera ever since my tour bus drove past the Paris Opera House, and our guide started playing "The Phantom of the Opera". I though that was the coolest song I have ever heard. That was 2 or 3 years ago, I'm 15 now, and I still am obsessed about the Phantom! My mom finally got me the soundtrack about a year ago, with Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I played it endlessly, memorized every word, and longed to see Michael Crawford in London. But I had no way of getting there anytime soon. Well, this fall the traveling US "Phantom of the Opera" came to our city. I was so syked, and me and my mom got $15 tickets. I knew Micheal wasn't going to be in it, but I thought that this would be my only chance to see it! Well, I saw it and was dissapointed. The Phantom's voice was different, he looked different, and didn't even seem like a Phantom at all. To tell you the truth, I didn't really even enjoy it. All because I expected to hear Micheal Crawford's enchanting voice singing. Now I want to see the London cast as bad as ever. I want to hear Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and all of that wonderful cast which I have singing on my tape. Then I found this page, and heard about the Phantom Movie, and now I finally have hope of seeing Crawford! To make this long story short, I am dying to see this movie, but if Michael isn't in it (and Sarah too), I will not bother seeing it. The Phantom isn't the Phantom without Michael. Long Live Michael Crawford, the only true Erik!

Comments: A noble cause indeed. Creating a movie version of "Phantom" wothout Mr. Crawford would be akin to remaking the Indiana Jones trilogy without Harrison Ford or "Gone With the Wind" wothout Clark Gable. If you remove the man who defined the character so firmly, you lose the character's soul.

Comments: I have very strong feelings about Michael Craawford playing the phantom in the movie. I saw Michael live in concert three times in Pittsburgh which is about an hour from Wheeling, WV . Each time he was singing the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Which also he performed many songs from the Phantom. He can command the attention of an audience like no performer I have seen in years. His voice is beautiful and truly trained, I cannot see anyone else playing the part in the movie. In an interview with Larry King on CNN he told Mr. King that Sir Webber asked him to play the part in the movie. Now they decide aman with no singing ability will do the part. I have no objection to Mr. Banderas as a movie star, but as the Phantom he can do no justice to the part, On Sir Webber's 50th birthday celebration broadcast on PBS TV I was shocked that Mr. Banderas sang as the Phantom and everyone was there from his other shows but Michael Crawford, If that was not a slap in the face I don't know what was. Sorry , but my feelings are very strong and Michael is the only one I could watch in a movie of the Phantom. I did see the show on stage but not with Mr. Crawford playing the part of the Phantom, I enjoyed it very much, but was comparing the Phantom's voice and movements to Michael Crawfords. There is no comparison, I think they will be making a big mistake if Michael does not get to do the movie. I and my friends will not be going to see it !! Thank you for letting me voice my opinion, this has been bothering me for sometime. As far as I am concerned no one else can take his place.

Comments: I would like to voice my support for the inclusion of Michael Crawford in the proposed Warner Bros. movie, as the title role of the Phantom. He captures the raw undilluted petrol of human emotion, and audiences are both consumed and captivated by his artistic and flawless portrayal of this disfugured genius. The first name that comes to mind whenever anybody mentions the musical, is Michael Crawford. The name sells the musical, and would almost certainly sell the movie. So isn't it time that these studios put their money where their financial returns almost certainly lie? I dream of a future where modern cultural icons are in the hands of visionaries and not businessmen. Thank you for your time. Regards Jason Turner

Comments: Hi Jana, I just have to address your post right below and I am writing this as an individual and a fan. It very much concerns me that the portrayal of the Phantom will be the PERFECT record left behind for everyone in the future, there is only going to be one shot at "Phantom" becoming a movie classic and if they ruin this one we may never see another movie musical. I have viewed many other actors in the role as the Phantom, I did also see Davis Gaines three times, never, not once have I ever left the theatre after seeing someone else and not wished it was Michael Crawford back up on that stage once again. Passion, love, sensuality, anger, he displayed all the emotions and absolutely to the edge.
Lord Lloyd-Webber PLEASE, do the right thing by this play, your fans and the future audience...... cast MICHAEL CRAWFORD, do it SOON!!! Time is slipping by....... Don't change the score, rewrite the libretto or anything else from the original play that is so loved by your fans..... Record this beloved play to be cherished forever, stay with the winner it already is..... Use the man who brought the heart and soul to your Phantom. MICHAEL CRAWFORD.
Sincerely,
Your fan who still cannot give up.....

Comments: I continue to review this site frequently. (ps: please add another line to How did you find us? such as, I am a frequent flyer!). I read how many believe they have seen great phantoms, but think Mr Crawford should receive the part because he originated the role in three different cities and stole top awards in all, London, Broadway, Los Angeles. I have actually seen an outstanding performance by Davis Gaines and he was outstanding because he refused to imitate the Master. Unfortunately no matter how outstanding Mr Gaines performed (he did some acts better), he did not surpass Mr Crawford. He came damn close. What I am basing my judgement upon is the sexiest scene that either performers did not try to replicate or performed poorly. The scene was when Mr Crawford gondolaed into his lair, alights with Christine, hurls his hat offstage, continues the same arc to rake his fingers through his hair, then slide his hands seductively down his body. Every bloody time he did so, the females would gasp, and the males would take notes. I know Mr Crawford discovered that ploy during rehearsal when he thought he might have flipped his wig. He checked to make sure it still was intact and the choreographer told him to keep the move. The musical is extremely difficult to emulate. Even the Master has some problems. On the recording, there is the pathetically endearing and frustrating chortle Mr Crawford ejaculates just before sending the chandelier crashing to the stage. In all the performances I saw, he never did as well as the recording. Cats may now be a memory (at least Broadway's), but it has its memory recorded in a live cast performance which beats the what-ever-happened-to Universal's animated version. The Phantom of the Opera should have the same respect. Give us, Lord Lloyd Webber, a memory we can be proud to see many times. Give us Mr Crawford.

I am really looking forward to the movie version of Phantom. I am a die-heart fan of all musicals and want more to come out on video. I hope to see Micheal Crawford as the Phantom, because I have the c.d with him as the Phantom and I love it. When I saw Phantom in New York, we had a different man as the Phantom and the experience was different. Comments: I seriously agree...I have yet to even see this play...though I am sure it won't be half as good without MC as the Phantom. I've only listened to the CD and as Granny said that's exactly how I feel. He is the phantom when he's singing that part. At least to me he is, for I have heard many of the other recordings of others and no one can come close to what he's able to do with it. I dunno how old the people who come here are but I'm only 17 and I'm hoping very much that MC gets the part in a film...because I want my children(I think ahead a lot) and my children's children etc. TO be able to not only hear but see such an absolutly breathtaking movie.(as it would be if MC played Phantom) This is why I'm here and while I will be until people realize what I have. and I realize it's not that all the other actors are bad artists...quite the contrary. Though if you put an average drawing next to a beautiful painting it will naturally look less exquisite. You get the idea. That's how I feel with MC as the Phantom. No one else could ever be as tall as he with that part. They can only try to copy it...and that is why they sound so bad in that role to me. I've heard the original and thus have been very spoiled...I don't want to hear anything else. -Aura "Sore wa himitsu desu."

If he wasn't great AB wouldn't be great either. MC the only POTO for me!!! His voice soars and becomes the very soul of Erik, and even after only hearing the CD, I could picture every move, especially in MOTN. If he could do that by voice alone, I believe no one could EVER portray the Angel of Music so effectively and gorgeously than MC, on or off screen.

If MC isn't in the movie, I will only go because I love the story and to inform the rest of you if AB ruined it. Hopefully our protests will get somewhere. If you ask me, I think ALW might have some sort of grudge against MC or something, otherwise, why wouldn't he cast him? After all, the reveiws for MC were above oustanding!

Comments: It looks like ALW is putting together a package, - script, director, actors (and maybe a new song or two for an Oscar bid) - to present to the money men, "The Men in Green" at the studio who must give the final OK. I don't know who has final say on the project, but I think WB would be insane to have given it to a "composer" in an age when the movie musical is all but dead and burried. I imagine WB has the "yea" or "nay" option over the package. With a "NEY" at that point ALW can do the whole thing over or scrap it entirely. I am willing to bet that if WB finds ALW difficult, that they can bury the entire project as well. When Terry Semel was the head honcho, I think he thought any package at all would be fine as long as it included a big star and since AB was under a 3 film contract - well, why not? Such were the creative considerations of Mr. Semel, who gave the world such spectacular trash as "Sphere." I still maintain the highest hopes that Mr. Alan Horn is both a pratical man and a man of artistic vision. I hope that he saw MC as the Phantom and remembers the effect he had on audiences. I hope he has noticed the devotion of this group and many other MC people and how special that devotion all is. I hope Mr. Horn has been informed of the 13 million people who have the Original Cast Album. I hope he is aware of the misguided perception ALW has of his own masterwork, as we have just seen it come to light.

"Christine of the Opera" indeed! :) Sure, ALW set out to make her the central character, a young woman influenced by 3 men. But the public already knew the story. It was the Phantom they came to see and, thanks to Michael Crawford, it was the Phantom they came to love. Christine is not the tragic figure here. She is not the source of the high romance. Belittle the Phantom role and and you might as well make a wedding shower the highlight of the show. How dull!

If WB goes ahead with this project, this remade mess of mass stupidity, WB had better remember that another Phantom lurks over at Universal. If they persist in this folly, and distroy this unique musical, they will find themselves competing with that rat infested epic - and loosing into the bargain! As my best friend has often said to me - the two most common things in the universe are Hydrogen and stupidity. Best Wishes, Audrey Aucott

Comments: As I see it, AB has a few problems. His own lack of a recent box office success makes his hold on the Phantom role less secure, since that was the excuse the studios gave for wanting him in the first place. The second problem is the increased public awareness of the campaign and fan support for Michael in the role. The third problem is the increase in Michael's publicity and the public's awareness of him due to his book. Given all this, AB has to make himself seem to be in a stronger position. Don't get discouraged, and keep plugging for the best!!

Comments: Antonio Banderas is absolutely wonderful in "The Mask of Zorro!" Antonio would make a good Raoul in "The Phantom of the Opera." But only Michael Crawford can truly be the Phantom, Erik. It is only right that the man who performed this role 1300 times on stage should thrill movie audiences with this same performance. But Mr. Banderas could woo the beautiful Christine and win her in the end. Please help this come true. Thank you and God bless!

Comments: As a long time fan of POTO, I wholeheartedly concur with the thousands of "Phans" that there is but one choice for the role of the Phantom in the movie adaptation, and the reason is one that has been well articulated by many: THE VOICE! I have only twice seen touring productions of POTO but have heard the original cast recording countless times. There is nothing so moving as hearing Michael Crawford's voice making the passionate plea to "Christine" to help him "make the music of the night." There is no other voice that can emote the devastation and heartbreak as when Crawford as the "Phantom," after hearing "Raoul" and "Christine" pledge their love to each other in "All I Ask of You," sings, "He was bound to love you when he heard you sing." His voice soars, it bellows, it cries, all of which not only captures "Christine's" heart but all of the listeners of the original recording, as well. Those who have seen Crawford on stage can speak of his visual portrayal and persona of the "Phantom," and now through this website the rest of us can view his live performances at the Tonys and the various television appearances. I have seen his PBS concert and last year's appearance of "Regis & Cathy Lee" and have seen the reaction of the uninitiated listener become moved to tears and inspired by his voice. (I highly recommend all "phans" view these video clips.) We all know and understand that movies, as a visual medium, allow us to see and experience every aspect of a location, and situation in a screenplay. And I'm sure that the production company of this movie will spare no expense in creating the lavish interiors, the extravagant costumes, and the visual effects that we would come to expect. We also know that movies also allow us to view our favorite celebrities and actors under close magnification so that we may "savor each sensation" of their beauty and handsome looks. Such is the way of movie casting. But as all POTO fans know the character of the Phantom is not portrayed or alluded to as a handsome figure - mysterious, perhaps, but not outwardly chiseled and having "rugged good looks." Antonio Banderas is unquestionably handsome and would have a certain charisma and appeal to many loyal but uninitiated fans of his. As for his voice, it has charm and flair but it is hollow and lacks a certain passion that only MC possesses. One only has to listen to find the beauty and passion in Crawford's voice that embodies the soul and persona of the "Phantom." In his voice we are moved to fear him, and loathe him, and yet we also are moved to feel compassion, empathy, and pity for him. As mentioned by other writers to this website, the "Phantom" is ageless. He is a man of mystery behind the mask. To suggest to Phantom fans that this movie would draw millions of people longing to "see" Banderas in this role is to suggest that we can trivialize the character for the sake of the potential box office draw. We would rather "hear" Michael Crawford deliver that inspired vocalized beauty, the beauty that the "Phantom" embodies, for Crawford is the consummate "Phantom." Deep in his soul he embodies the "Phantom." His voice "takes us where we long to be." When Warner Brothers, RUG, and ALW understand this they will make a great movie, not just a good adaptation of a great stage musical.

Comments: Go easy on the boycott threats -- they rarely work. I'd prefer Crawford as the Phantom, but I'll see the movie, regardless. I just hope the movie does the play credit, unlike the movie version of A Chorus Line, which was awful. I had heard that ALW was considering Antonio Banderras for the role, since Crawford was "too old" for the part. Now, that's the worst excuse I've ever heard. The scarred and masked Phantom is ageless. If they need the Banderras name, why not use him as Raoul? In any case, how long do we have to wait before production begins?

A younger actor who can't sing would be of no consequence since the phantom is masked throughout the whole show anyway. The voice of the phantom is what counts and I hope whoever films the movie will see that this is the most important thing.

Comments: The Phantom is a Classic which deserves to be placed on screen in the same fashion as how it is presented in real life Broadway style. If anyone should be used for the role of the Phantom then let it be the one and only GREAT ONE...not a Hollywood name...it didn't work for the Batman movies it only gave them a horrid name. Do not allow this to happen to such a legend of the theatre.

Comments: Though I have seen the musical several times, I have never had the pleasure of seeing the role of the Phantom performed by Michael Crawford. And it is his voice that I thrilled to on the cast recording, his soaringly romantic interpretation that interested me in the story to begin with. I like Antonio Banderas, and he has a good voice -- but not a great one. The Phantom is supposed to be a man whose voice, whose every enunciation, is of such supreme beauty and longing that it stuns and seduces everyone who hears it. It can't be a pleasant pop sound that strains at the high notes -- it has to be a strong, classically-trained voice, capable of the demands of operatic grandeur, but also ethereal, delicate, and strikingly romantic. According to the story, it has to make Christine fall under the Phantom's spell with its own power alone. I don't believe Banderas or Travolta can cut this. Crawford can. He already has. Note to site maintainers: I was made aware of this site by its Feb 18 mention in USA Today -- I hope I am not the only one!

Comments: Someone just mentioned how great Michael Crawford is on the original soundtrack. Having seen him last year in concert, I wanted to point out that he sings those songs better now then on the original soundtrack! This man's voice improves with age. I heard people at one of his concerts saying that they got more out of him singing those few songs in concert then they did seeing the entire play with someone else. You can see him turn into the phantom right before your eyes, without a mask or prop of any kind. I never had the privilege of seeing Mr. Crawford in Phantom of the Opera. I can only hope that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Brothers come to their senses and cast him in the movie version.

Comments: The Phantom wears a mask throughout most of the musical. So it makes no difference whether the part is played by a young man or an older one. What does matter is his VOICE! And the voice of the Phantom is only Michael Crawford!!! If Warner Brothers is so intent on casting Antonio Bandaras in the role, then they obviously don't want the movie to make a profit. I, for one, will not pay money to see it!

Comments: Michael Crawford IS the Phantom..The only Phantom. He should be the Phantom in the movie and it would be an extremely egrigious error to cast anyone else. No offense to Antonio Banderas. He may be a very nice person, but his singing, etc. as Che in Evita was not impressive. I would hope that ALW remembers this, and takes proper action to ensure the legacy of the Phantom role. If Mr. Webber does not see this error, then I suggest a boycott of ALL ALW's productions.

I know that the only thing that is going to get pushed is your career out the door, so do the smart thing, no the right thing give Michael(the phantom)crawford what he has worked hard for, for 10 years he deserves it and you know it, your just thinking about money, well I don't want to spoil your fun but if you allow antonio to play the Phantom you won't make any money cause like I said nobody want's to see antonio play the Phantom

Comments: I have been enjoying exploring this website and have to commend all on it's truthfulness and manner in which the information is presented to as to give visitors a well-rounded education in the casting of the Phantom. I have been involved in the theatre as a musician and know how important it is to maintain the success and integrity of a production. It is the original actors/actresses, who bring to a character something from their own experience, who are then able to bring a character to life and make the character believeable and real to the audience. As an actor/actress creates a character from experiences in his/her own life, it gives the character heart and a soul and real emotions to which the audience can relate. After visiting the Phantommovie site it is obvious why Michael Crawford is the one who would maintain the integrity and success of POTO. Also, his diverse experience on the stage, and in movies and TV,would serve him well as he makes the transition from the stage to the screen with POTO. I invite all vistors to explore this website fully and to make an entry in the guest books.
