Comments: I loved the musical the Phantom of the opera. I was priviliged to see it in London and I had the chance to see Michael Crawford perform. I just saw both video clips and honestly I believe Michael is the better phantom. I mean Antonio can't even pronounce some of the words right. The Phantom is a very difficult role to play, and I don´t think A. Banderas is up to it. I think the phantom should be the person who played the original, which in this case is Michael Crawford. He seems to have made such a magnificent connection with the phantom that no other person can ever take his role. Michael has such an angelical, and powerful voice that which according the original story, the phantom had "the voice of an angel."  I wish this campaign success in reaching the goal of putting Micheal Crawford in the spotlight for the new movie.

Comments: I don't feel anyone can do justice to the part, only Michael Crawford. His voice is so beautiful, not just as the Phantom, but others, such as "I Dreamed a Dream", and "Bring Him Home" can bring tears to my eyes.I'm not a kid, I'm a 68 year old woman who knows a magnificent voice when I hear it. Michael is the ONLY choice for the Phantom !!!

Comments: The Phantom of Opera is one of my fave. And plus its soundtracks.... the All I ask Of you.... Gee, through that song, a guy became so close to me and got me falling into him... He likes the movie, so do I.... He even played the role Raoul in his high school theater event during his high school life... He said that "All I ask of you" song would be his wedding song... Somehow, we develop an intimate yet undefined relationship.... that is because he has a girl friend that happened to be my mother's student.... The Phantom of Opera is really a memorable one.... How I wish I had the privilege to see this in theater.... Hoping you could throw this up to the producer of this piece and conduct live/ theater in our country, especially here in Zamboanga City.. Thank you very much... at least there's a guest site about phantom of opera....Phantom Of Opera has already been part of my life.

Comments: I don't understand why there has ever been any question of who should play the Phantom. I don't see any signs that Michael has "aged" or "slowed down" in any way. He's still as gorgeous and agile as he ever was. Besides, if the Phantom's face is covered anyway...why change the person playing him. Especially since no one else could ever sing like Michael. I agree with others that Antonio should be cast in the part of Raoul.

Comments: I would like to voice my support for casting Michael Crawford as the title role in the Phantom of the Opera movie. He embodies the role in such a way that no one else could ever dare dream. Everytime I listen to the CD of the orginal London cast brings me to tears (which unfortunately my last trip to Broadway in February of 2000 did not evoke such emotion). I will flat out refuse to go to the film if Michael Crawford is not casted as Phantom. Further I will talk everyone I know and encounter in person and over email not to go see it unless he is casted.

Comments: Although I never saw Michael as the Phantom (I saw the opera 3 times with Scott Davies in Bristol), I have the music CD and desperately would like to have a version I could watch on television, I hope to god Hollywood doesn't get hold of it because they would totally ruin it, whatever they do and how ever hard they try. Any movie or video should have Michael in it though as the most famous, and probably best, Phantom. All the very best Michael.

Comments: I have seen the Phantom in Toronto,Canada, six times where Colm Wilkinson preformed in four of those shows. Phantom was also in Rochester,New York with an off broadway cast. I have heard Mr. Crawford sing the Phantom and saw little clips of his show on T.V. and a tape that we have. Mr. Crawford sends chills down my spine when he sings, like that of Mr. Wilkinson. I do not think anyone else would be suited for such a role. He is the ORIGINAL Phantom and should be cast as such. There is no other than the true Opera Ghost!

Comments: Hello, I think Mr. Bandares is a wonderful actor (especially in Zorro) and that he deserves to be in big movies. However, I mean no disrespect to him but he cannot sing as half as good as Michael Crawford! In the book, which I suppose the play is based on, the phantom is like a human corpse(not tan and cute), he is supposed to have no accent (unlike Bandares), and is supposed to have a voice so hypnotic and heroicly sweet that no one could resist but following it! I am in no way saying that Michael Crawford looks like a human corpse, but he doesn't exactly have tan skin and he is getting older (which might I also add is part of the desccription). It would be wrong and unfitting to make Antonio Bandares the Phantom!!!! GET A CLUE!!!!!

Comments: I strongly believe that no one else can play the part of the Phantom except that man who created it -- Michael Crawford! To me, he IS the Phantom and no one else can compare to the role he originated. He deserves to play the Phantom in the movie version. Without him, the move will be a big bomb! He is truely a very gifted performer and he just amazes me everytime I see him perform. He just does not sing a song, he FEELS the song and that is what makes him a great performer. His music has truely touched my heart and soul. A message to the powers that be -- please reconsider your decision and cast Michael in the role that he was destined to play. I promise that you will not regret it!!!

Within those 14 years, I have also been a huge fan of Michael Crawford. The songs he has sung have helped through some very troubled times. I can not decribe in words the impact he has had on me. ever since I heard that a Phantom movie was to be made (How long ago was this?) I have hoped Michael would be placed in the staring role. He is the man. Plain and simple.

Comments: I loved the research performed by Maggie Birge regarding information regarding GONE WITH THE WIND. I also enjoyed the rendition in the Recent News of the website. I believe a producer will want to make faithful movie adaptations of the classis. To answer the question of "David O. Selznick, where are you when we need you!" He is being ostricised for reporting history as accepted during his prime. The special OSCAR award in his memory will no longer be presented. I am not condoning nor condemning. I am just making the point that legends are only in the minds of the beholders. We make legends. We destroy legends. I know Mr Selznick was in a quandry to cast Scarlet because he sought perfection. It was a conundrum until the miraculous Viven Leigh appeared. I would like to see Lord Lloyd Webber put his money where his signature is. I would also like to see people who think they can cast better to keep the classics' integrity to read the classics. Never does Gaston Leroux age the Phantom. He implies that Erik has been around. He does describe Erik of mature chronological age. Age should not be a factor for Phantom. Talent should be a factor. The frustration, compassion, despair, and (yes) love are best performed by no other than Mr Crawford. Mr Banderas plays a character with the same emotion from alpha to omega. I performed poorly in my first acting class when I emoted an angry scene with anger. (Silly me! I tried to emote what the character SHOULD have felt, but when I started at the height of anger, I had nothing more to offer. And that is how Mr Banderas played Che. He started angry and had nothing to build upon. He therefore left many legitimate theatre buffs feeling flat.) Unlike real life, the actors do not have the time to demonstrate the normal human progression of emotional makeup. So the actor must underplay, then rapidly build an emotion unlike normal situations. I have seen Mr Crawford perform the Phantom and do exactly that. The audience is awed how he fluctuates between emotions. He transmits all the emotions in less than three hours (including intermission) what it takes Gaston Leroux pages to describe. And he does it well.

Yes. I support the Phantom Movie campaign 100%. Not only do I think you are correct in your endeavors, you are doing something only others talk about.

You have the courage of your convictions, and that I totally respect. It's easy to run at the mouth for those who condemn, but when those who take action to make change...well, they are the leaders and they are the ones I respect. Followers bore me.

Hollywood needs to be told...and you people are doing it. And, if in my little way, make a difference by getting the word out there..I say great...but when Michael Crawford IS cast in the film, it won't be me who made the difference, it will be you.

Hang in there. It's gonna happen!

Best,

V.J.

Comments: When I heard Mr. Crawford would not be in the "Phantom" movie, I was outraged. Saying that he does not have enough "draw" for moviegoers is absurd. All I can say is that there is no phantom without Michael Crawford. It is unthinkable. Warner Bros: Remember when the producers of "My Fair Lady" said Julie Andrews didn't have the boxoffice draw? They cast Audrey Hepburn instead and Julie Andrews won the Oscar that year for "Mary Poppins." You make that mistake and you deserve the consequences. Give me a break: John Travolta?? Next, they'll be casting Danny DeVito! How about Kermit? We want Michael.

Comments: There is absolutely no way that Warner Bros. can cast anyone other than Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom for the movie! I just listened to the soundtrack today, and I cried so hard when it was over. Michael Crawford puts so much energy, love, and passion into his work. Though I've never seen him perform live, I have seen some of his work on the screen, and even seeing him on your tv gives you the wonderful feeling of a live performance. There are only a few actors who can do that. I've heard rumors that Hollywood actors such as Antonio Banderas were up for the role. Now, I loved Antonio in Evita, but it takes a truly well-trained singer with a spectacular range (such as Michael Crawford)to perform the challenging role of the Phantom. I'm really glad that you guyz are doing this!!!!! Thanks!! Let's keep our fingers crossed that Michael does sign on! And...wouldn't that be cool if Sarah Brightman signed on too? :-)

I also find it hard to believe that Warner Bros. wants to make Antonio (an Agentinian) into a paris oprea house ghost I mean honestly how much farther can you get from authentic!! The book describes the phantoms voice as one that when he sung people wanted to know who was making such lovely music and that is the same effect that Michael is STILL having on audiences today! I believe in order to make WB convinced of their decision they need to put a random audience together comprised of multiple age groups and show them Antonio as Phantom and Michael and get the opinions so they know their crowd. I truely believe Michael deserves to be immortalized in the film of the role he made his own!

His voice is amazing, he manages to sound pleasing while constantly maintaining that haunted and bitter emotion which comes across so clearly. He, and he alone can bring the Phantom to life. I looked around and several people where standing at the door. At the end of the piece, a fellow nurse got up and left the ward in tears. The people standing so quietly at the door? You see, I'm a nurse in a state hospital and very little gets through to most of my clients. I had to play it twice more before they would go to bed. If he can touch their hearts?

This is a direct quote: "All I want from people are respect and through the music I earn it." Well, Lord Webber, you are a fool if you choose to not listen to the people. "A NEW PHANTOM MOVIE, THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE, WILL NEVER BE DENIED!!!" In my heart Crawford is the Phantom, always will no matter what and I say to all you other phans out there, that don't let this movie take away a piece of that chain that has crossed the world. Remember Crawford always and keep the faith that ALW will be smart this time. Also, in the new release of JOSEPH, Donnie Osmond was the original and Webber said "I cast him because of all the Joseph's I heard, he is the upmost very best." If Donnie can make it, so can Michael!!!

Comments: I do hope this gets to the proper individuals. I first have to say, I have loved theatre all my life that is why I have two college degrees in it and why I feel so strongly about this issue. But most importantly, I have loved, respected, and admired Michael Crawford since the very begining of his career. To Warner Brothers, I say don't be so "turned off" by a "stage actor" need I remind you that Mr. Crawford held his own against John Lennon, Oliver Reed, Zero Mostel, Buster Keaton, and Barbara Streisand, just to name a few. Second, if it wasn't for the stage, we would have never known actors like Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda, ALL had stage careers BEFORE HOLLYWOOD took notice. And these are just three examples, there are more. It drives me crazy how people in this business "settle" for whom ever will bring in the most money and NOT who is right for the part. I long for the days like in the Golden era of Hollywood when ART and TALENT reign and NOT $$$$$. And to those who read this, we can talk all we want, but the ONLY way Hollywood and the powers that be listen,is to that almighty $$$$. Sad, huh! Now, to Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, I have a few things to say. First, I have loved your musicals ever since Joseph was first released, and I have defended you to friends and associates, who just pass your musicals and your music as boring and predictable. I understand the need to prove yourself, Tim Rice, your former collaborator won several Oscars and other awards for his musical movies and I understand that you want to follow. But what I don't understand is why you never learn, for example, you hire Patti Lupone, who quits her television show, tells her she has the London and Broadway openings and because the SHOW is too long and the sets are to big, you close the show down, dismiss her and hire Glenn Close. Eventhough that is a limited run on her part. You ditch a friendship that brought you TONY AWARDS for EVITA, for some Hollywood actress. What did that bring you? Some LIMITED and TEMPORARY press? The show still closed early and even though she won the TONY, you got nothing else out of it. And in the end you lost money and a friendship. Second, you give Barbara Streisand songs from your musical, thinking that she would make videos and tour the heck out of the songs, but in the end she didn't come through for you. You should have given the songs to Sarah Brightman to debut, She would have done a better job and she makes ALL of your songs sound 1 trillion times better than anyone else. Third, And hiring Antonio Banderis to do Che wasn't so hot either. At least with Mandy Patinkin, you can UNDERSTAND him!!! And you felt some passion, with Antonio Bandaris, I kept thinking that a mirror wasn't to far from him so he could check to see if he was cute on screen. Don't Lord Lloyd Webber have these three strikes and your out. Reaching for that Brass ring may not always bring you that pot of gold, it more than likely tarnishes. I have the initial press release from Variety that stated that Michael Crawford AND Sarah Brightman will be doing the movie. I hope you stay to that promise. But to those you agree with me, I had a dream that Andrew in his mind to please us, will release a video of a production of POTO with Michael and Sarah and THEN release the MOVIE with Antonio and his wife Melanie Griffith. And in Andrew's mind we would be satisfied with that. I can safely say, I would not, and I would definately stop singing his music and stop defending him. Another thought is where does that wonderful impresario of POTO think of all this? I am speaking of Cameron Mackintosh? I know he would agree the ONLY people who are acceptable to do the movie is Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. That is why he is more succesful that Andrew Lloyd Webber, he doesn't forget his friends nor does he through talent away for some quick Hollywood name. In other words, TALENT instead of $$$$, there is hope!!!

Comments: There comes a time in life when a person must take a stand and a line in the sand be drawn. Today is the day and now is the time for me. My cousin just told me about this and I came here to see for myself. Other than this is totally impressive it is a really pathetic day when a person discovers that a person they have admired for most of their life has stabbed through the heart a great actor (I saw him twice as the Phantom) and the man who deserves to do this film. What happened and what did Michael Crawford do to have this taken away from him? I heard he was making the film. Sir Webber you are making the biggest mistake of your life and if you think that word of mouth can't hurt this film if you actually have the bad judgement to hire someone else guess again. I will be telling my friends. I have no doubts they will tell theirs. This may not make right the wrong that has been done to Michael Crawford but I will maybe feel better. Michael if you ever read this I am behind you and YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE PHANTOM. Sincerely, Mary Massari

If a large contingency approaches Warner Brothers with its concern, Warner Brothers may listen. Movie campaigners are needful, but money speaks louder than movie campaigners. Comments: Michael Crawford is the best singer I've ever heard. If I were to give an award to the most talented man in all of history he would be my first choice. As an actor he soars to new heights, the emotions he puts into his work just puts tears in your eyes. The way his arms move, and the way his body sways just adds to the mystery of the man behind the white mask. Clearly the perfect voice is the ideal pick for the movie. Hollywood has butched up enough things, let's not make the best musical of all time go along with some of the 'R' rated junk that Hollywood has formed. No, Phantom of the Opera is the most incredible thing to be put into words. If you are going to give it to Hollywood at least give the man that deserves the part the part. If you are really a 'phan' of the phantom you'll have to agree. Thanks, Jenny

Besides...no-one has the same evil laugh. so what? if they cast that crap actor antonio banderas...HA! i would NOT pay to see him! he cannot even sing....we've seen evita! all they want to do is involve a younger audience to make MONEY. here, take my £10. only if u cast michael crawford. i speak for my generation. get your researchers working harder WB!! we don't want CRAP. we want a soppy love story that'll scare us, thrill us.... mike crawford is the only 1 who can do that!!! get with it. michael crawford IN!!!!!! one love, av phun...te raa! Comments: Banderas Up Against the Ropes That's the title of the NY Post's 1/24/00 article about this weekend's box office returns, where "Play It to the Bone" came in No. 9. I'm reprinting some of the article, not to knock Banderas but to point out that he is not the draw that ALW and/or WB may think he is. "Antonio, Antonio, wherefore art thou, Antonio? Heartthrob no more, Antonio Banderas has endured a brutal past 12 months, enough to deflate even the most modest Latin lover. First there was 'The 13th Warrior,'(Banderas' big summer action flick...thirteen is not his lucky number) then 'Crazy in Alabama,' (his directorial review...met with respectful reviews and no audience interest) and now 'Play It to the Bone.' Not since Lucy kicked Desi out of the house has there been such a showbiz diappointment. Like the sexually confused character he plays in Ron Shelton's boxing comedy opposite Woody Harrelson, Banderas is up against the ropes. 'Play It to the Bone' debuted in ninth place this weekend, knocked out by bad reviews and worse word of mouth following a brief Christmas release at one Hollywood theater." My thoughts: If AB is not a box office draw in a small- or medium-budget film because of bad reviews and bad word of mouth, however in the world can it be hoped that he can carry a huge-budget musical? The likelihood that he will get good reviews in POTO is slim considering the reaction to his performance at the ALW birthday party. The word of mouth among the worldwide audience of POTO fans will be poisonous. This casting will doom the Phantom movie. I pray that ALW will come to his senses. If not, let's hope someone in the business end of RUG will do some arithmetic and give him a sense of the bottom line. With this rumored casting, that bottom line will be one color only: red.

Comments: Though I have never seen Michael Crawford as Phantom, I have fell in love with him and his voice through the Phantom soundtrack. I have seen the road show version twice, and so far no one has replaced him in my heart or mind. I was slightly amused at first when I heard the possibility of Antonio Banderas becoming the Phantom. I did not think it was serious, but now I see that it is a possibility. I beleive it would do Andrew Lloyd Weber's beautiful musical a great disservice. I cringed when I heard Antonio Banderas singing the Phantom's part on Lloyd Weber's birthday show. He does not have the vocal range to do the part justice. The view of some who beleive that Michael would not be a big enough draw is ludicrous. There have been many movies made with unknowns that have been successful. Michael is not unknown, and as you see, he has many loyal fans who would pay huge sums of money to see him and go back many times. I personally would not see the movie if anyone else is cast in the role.I hope that you would change your minds, because Michael Crawford will always be Phantom not only to me but many others.

Comments: I am a sensible, level headed person with one exception- the Phantom. Where he is concerned, I can accept none of these pale immitations presented in countless Phantom movies. Here, with Lloyd Webber, I thought I might finally have an opportunity to capture the beauty, depth, and passion that make the story more than a penny horror flick. However, to trade Crawford's ability to draw crowds by pure talent for a shallow Hollywood face would ruin the film for me and countless others. All the executive's need do is look at the history of the story. How many other versions were made (and failed completely) before Lloyd Webber's fantasic team was gathered-led by Crawford? I for one cannot and will not support any version with John Travolta, Antonio Banderes, or *any other* shooting star.
