It will just be a knock-off of the "real" design. As with all "copies", one knows and is never really satisfied. |

I have never seen him in this role - but when I listen to his interpretations of the songs and how other individuals sing them - these people must be stone death to not realize the magnatude that Michael brings to this role. Not only his singing ability, but the emotion he conveys with his voice as well as Michael already being identified with the role can not be brushed over. I am sure that these "people" will see the light and sign Michael in this role. If not, the movie should never be made! |

I could accept their logic and reasoning if there was some sense to what they are trying to do. They work on a profit margin but what they must realize is that a "drawing" name is not what necessarily makes the profit. A proven individual who is not only talented but is already identified with the role would work better. This person is already introduced as the Phantom of the Opera where ever he goes - so of course - i am talking about Michael Crawford the one and only Phantom. I hope soon their eyes are opened and see what Michael could do for them, and his phans! |

I agree with a statement made on this site that ultimately it is the preservation of a role, a performance so perfectly cast that to even consider anyone else in the part is tantamount to heresy. Ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I have stated that under no circumstances will I see POTO if Michael Crawford is not in it. The difference is that any other actor would just be playing a part. Michael has been able to connect with the soul of the character to the point that, when he was onstage, he WAS the Phantom. There was no separating the two. Antonio Banderas is a fine actor and a creditable singer in the right role (Che was tailor-made for him and he was phenomenal.) However, I HAVE seen the video of Sir ALW's 50th Birthday Celebration and, as enthralled as I was with Antonio's performance as Che, I was just as HORRIFIED when he began singing the music from POTO. He can't even PRONOUNCE the word correctly. I have NO desire to see The PHAM-tom of the Opera. I could handle him in the role of Raoul (which would make more sense.) But he does NOT have the control over his voice NECESSARY for the Phantom, nor does he have the ability to express his emotions through his voice. Michael has a powerful voice...but he also has the ability to be powerful through subtlety. Antonio does NOT have that ability and he never will. Frankly, I am greatly offended that Warner Brothers is so callously disregarding the viewpoint of the people who are the most likely to actually go to the movie theatre to see the musical. If they think that Antonio will draw them in solely on his name, they will get the teenyboppers and Antonio fans, and that will probably be it. There are way too many TRUE fans of POTO who KNOW what it should really sound like and feel like. I will say this...if anyone but Michael Crawford is in the role of the Phantom, then not only will I not see the movie, I will never watch another ALW production again. I am strongly questioning his artistic judgement. |

You gave the world a gift years ago..by sharing your outstanding talents in the stage version of the POTO..there has not been any other Phantom that has portrayed Erik quite like you..your voice, body/hand movements..every fiber of your being.. showed us that you felt love and compassion for Erik..that love/compassion for Erik was felt by the many audiences that saw you perform as the POTO..No other Phantom has achieved the Awards that you have as the POTO..nor as any other Phantom left such a Impression on people's minds and hearts..Hopefully, next year, we can present you with a Special Birthday Gift.. the ROLE OF PHANTOM IN THE MOVIE VERSION of POTO... |

If you put another "famous" actor (like A. Banderas) to the part, there will maybe be a lot of people on the cinemas the first week, but then... When those people tell their friends that the film isnīt good? It will be a fiasko! Please, donīt think just about money, think of making a good movie instead!!! |

I personally, have nothing against Mr. Bandares. His acting is wonderful and he is probably a nice person. But, I have, unfortunately, heard him sing Phantom of the Opera with the beautiful and talented Sarah Brightman. He can sing Evita well, but not Phantom. The role requires a certain etiquette and mannerism that Mr. Bandares does not have. Michael Crawford, on the other hand, is perfect. I have never seen anyone do a better job of playing this character, in all the performances I've seen (and I've seen many), and therefore, why would you get anyone else? I'm sure by now, Sir that you have received countless letters proclaiming the same thing, and I'm sure it must get tiring to read. So, to close, I will just say this: Listen to the fans. The fans bring in the money and choose if the movie will be a flop or a great success. I can say the movie will have some success if Mr. Bandares is cast in the role of Erik, but if you want all of the Phantom fans from around the world flocking to see this movie (which can be a great movie), you will listen to the ones who will see it - the fans. I can assure you, the movie will have much less triumph if you cast Mr. Bandares and not Michael Crawford in the role of Erik. Please listen to us. We are the ones who have loved the musical for years and continue to listen to it. We have loved the idea of a movie for a long time, but not if it turns out the direction it seems to be headed in. Thank you for taking the time to read this. A Phantom Fan of Many Years, Tiara Rea |

I am not usually a big fan of musicals but this one when I heard it first was something special that I've come back to listen to again and again, the only thing I attribute to this is the haunting voice of Michael Crawford. | Name: Marilynn Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Atlanta, Georgia Time: 2000-01-09 17:33:54 Comments: Dear Sir: In light of the recent announcement concerning the achievement of Phantom of the Opera, please keep the momentum going and preserve this great work by making the movie or video. POTO was a success because its story touched people with all the different emotions that were inherent in the characters' lives. People could relate to the plight of the Phantom because of the struggles people face daily. It was a success because the music was powerful and the words meaningful. Music is a universal language and the songs in POTO spoke vividly of pain, sorrow, love, and desire. It was a success because the original cast breathed life into each character. They drew from their own experiences, not from previous cast members', and were therefore able to make each character real and credible to the audience. They gave the characters a heart and soul to which the audience could relate. This was especially true in the case of the Phantom, as played by Michael Crawford. Since the Phantom's face is masked, gestures and voice are all important in order for there to be communication between the Phantom, other characters, and the audience. Michael Crawford's gestures and voice achieved this communication. Other actors have attempted to copy his actions and voice inflections with varying degrees of success , but none have been able to become the Phantom as Micahel Crawford is able. Please don't let this achievement of POTO go unnoticed or unrewarded. It was the public that ultimately decided on the success of POTO through their patronage. We await anxiously the movie or video version of the uncut and unaltered stage production with Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Thank you, |

Iīm very glad you started this petition because Iīm a great fan of Michael Crawford and I think that he has to be in the movie. Why do I think that Michael Crawford should get the role in the movie? Well, thatīs clear for me. For I am very young, I never had the possibility to see Michael Crawford act, but I listened to the records of my mother, and the first time I heard his voice, I knew that there would never be another man who could sing like that. I really do adore him. He should get the role because he is the Phantom. Maybe there are other actors who can play this role, but thereīs no one who can do it like Michael Crawford. I have really heard many other people in the role of the Phantom, but no one did fascinate me as Michael Crawford did. His voice is absolutely fantastic and his playing is so touching. The movie "Phantom of the Opera" without Michael Crawford cannot be as good as it would be with him. Thereīs only one Phantom in the world, and this Phantom is Michael Crawford. To here the wonderful notes of Andrew Lloyd Webber without the wonderful voice of Michael Crawford is impossible. Thereīs no other Phantom except Michael Crawford. I hope that this you will be successful with this petition and that we can soon welcome the movie with the fantastic Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom. Yours, Teresa |

Meadows Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 2000-01-09 14:29:40 Comments: To Whom it May Concern: Hello! I am an avid Phantom of the Opera fan, and as such I have to say there is only one true Phantom--Michael Crawford. One need only look at the man in the role on Broadway and as he toured around the country to see this is true. Look at his mannerisms--the way he handles himself--and you'll see Erik himself come alive. Why would anyone even consider casting anyone else as Erik? Also, if it's a matter of economics, consider this... yes, Warner Bros. and Andrew Lloyd Webber could cast a "big-name" celebrity as the Phantom, but what if he doesn't work for the part? Does name alone carry movies? As a graduate student working toward her PhD in Theatre, I most certainly say big names do not make good movies, nor do they guarantee great acting. Yes, usually big names will mean an initial draw at the box office, but they do not guarantee the public will keep coming to see a movie. On the contrary, if a movie is a flop, it's a flop, regardless of who stars in it. If the producers at Warner Brothers really want to cast the right person for the Phantom, and they are really concerned about keeping the artistic integrity of the character intact, I would first suggest they read the book by Gaston Leroux. There you will find a large part of Erik's character. Then, if they really want to find out who is the man behind the mask, they need only look at Andrew Lloyd Webber's characterization of Erik, or read the book "Phantom" by Susan Kay. There is the essential part of Erik, his heart, his soul, his identity. Or, to save time, simply buy the music video "Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Premiere Collection Encore," and watch Michael Crawford in the "Music of the Night" video. You need look no further to find Erik. Again, I sincerely believe that if the wrong casting decision is made here, the future of the movie is in jeopardy. Look at the countless adaptations that have been made of "The Phantom of the Opera." Really, the only one that does the character justice at all is the Lon Chaney version. The others are all cheap "horror" flicks done specifically to shock. That was not Gaston Leroux's intention when he created Erik, and to date, it is only Andrew Lloyd Webber who has read the novel and cast it in its true light. The world simply doesn't need another bad "Phantom of the Opera" movie. It's seen enough already. Of all the people who have played the Phantom, Michael Crawford is the most well known. Warner Brothers would not be casting a no-name by casting him. On the contrary, Crawford's popularity has soared since his portrayal of Erik. That should tell Warner Brothers all they need to know. And, to top it all off, Michael Crawford has a beautiful voice, which is essential for the Phantom. Erik is, after all, the master of music... why wouldn't the actor who portrays him be the master of music as well? I encourage whomever is in charge of this endeavor to seriously consider exactly what repercussions lay in wait after this decision is made. Is it better to cast someone with a big name, enjoy a few weeks of good draws at the box office, only to have the movie declared a flop? Or is it better to cast someone who knows Erik, has already developed the character of Erik and actually epitomizes him, and have the movie be a steady, consistant draw? I think the answer is obvious. Thank you very much for listening. Sincerely, Becky Lee Meadows |

His expressive voice is better now than it was ten years ago. His enunciation is flawless; all of the haunting lyrics are clear and understandable. He is the right age for the character. It was his voice and body movements that so well revealed the passion and pain of the Phantom and moved audiences to tears. Subsequent actors have only copied the model that he set. His voice is forever associated with the character of the Phantom worldwide. It was his performance that made the stage musical the enormous success that it has proved to be. And his is the performance that should be preserved on the screen. |

He performs the role very well. I feel that to have a Hollywood actor portray the Phantom, would totally ruin the effect of the play. | Name: TMCPMC Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 2000-01-05 02:14:50 Comments: This posted here from our message board for our next mailing. Thank you Jane for the wonderful post. TMCPMC andrew lloyd webber's music is beautiful but I don't think it's easy to sing. I saw Cats in washington once and I don't know what that girl did, but Memory sank like a rock. There was no feeling behind it and it just died. I've seen Music of the Night done both in concert and on stage that left me cold. I felt nothing. That's not good. The producer of Annie (the tv version, not that dreadful movie) said that if an action picture is off 5% you lose a million viewers. If a musical is off 5% you lose the whole audience. I think this is especially true of Phantom. I've seen Phantom a lot and been involved with numerous bus trips and that show varies more than any other show I have ever seen. It is totally dependent on the ability of the actor playing the phantom to touch the emotions. My reactions to that show have ranged from being in tears and wanting to see it again immediately, to rooting for Raoul, to wishing she'd dump both of them and go become a star, to hoping someone would flood the lair, drown all 3 of them and let me go to dinner. I've never seen another show with such a spread of reactions (and I've seen a lot of shows). The first time someone said they rooted for Raoul I Thought they were nuts. Then I saw a "bad" phantom and knew what they meant. We used to joke on the bus trips about the "chandelier show". You could always tell how good the phantom was by listening to what people were talking about on the way home. If they talked about the chandelier it was a bad phantom, if they were talking about the show it was a good phantom, if they wanted to know when the next bus trip was, it was Michael Crawford. A performance like his is so rare and so exciting that people who saw it are still talking about it. There were other good phantoms and I"m sure there are actors in Hollywood who MIGHT be adequate, but frankly I've seen Hollywood ruin too many fabulous musicals with poor casting of "name stars" to sit back and trust them. I saw Camelot with Julie Andrews and Richard Burton. saw Richard Kiley in Man of La Mancha, I saw Angela Lansbury in Mame. I know what those movies could and should have been. Thank god Meredith Willson had the guts to fight for Robert Preston in Music Man and smeone had the guts to fight for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl. Warner's didn't want her either. Phantom can be a great show but I'm tired of sending people to it who come back and tell me they are disappointed. They say the music was good and the chandelier was really neat but why people would see it more than once they have no idea (of course neither does ALW). I'm fighting because I am sick and tired of watching Hollywood take great musicals and make lousy movies out of them. I'm fighting because I don't want to see the "chandelier show". I'm fighting because I don't want to hear from one more person that they are disappointed and don't know what the fuss is about. And most of all I'm fighting because I don't want to be disappointed. I don't want adequate or even good when I know I could have great. |

They have both said that they would rather do concerts and recordings, and that way, if ALW sees how successful they are together, maybe he'll reconsider!! A video would be great too--like he did with CATS. That gave Elaine Paige a chance to recreate her role of Grizabella. ******************************* Hi Caryn, Michael Crawford has stated many times through the past year he would love to do the film if asked. We have several video clips and interviews on our web site you can view and read with him saying just that. This campaign's focus is and should remain solely on the issue of the possible upcoming movie version of the play, "The Phantom of the Opera." It would be wonderful to see them reunite in concert, but even more in the possible film of "Phantom." We have been told that there will be no chance for a video to be filmed or to be released while Warner Bros. holds the rights to "Phantom." So, campaigning for a video isn't really an option at the moment. We agree most fans would rather see a video of the show, or even the movie if it would hold true to the integrity of the play. "They" are only talking movie at this point so "we" are only campaigning concerning the film version. The best we can all keep doing is to continue to make our voices heard in letters and petitions and through the media whenever the opportunity arises. We thank you for your support! TMCPMC |

I just wanted to tell you that I agree with you completely about Sarah Brightman for the role of Christine. Not only is she the original, but she has the voice, talent and International popularity to bring great rewards to a possible film vehicle for the stage play. I also believe she looks youthful enough to still be able to pull it off; I am NOT buying into Lord Lloyd-Webber's propaganda that it is critical to cast a seventeen year old in the role. The unfortunate part of this story is we have heard that Sarah Brightman is no longer interested in accepting the role of Christine in the film. (Wouldn't we love to change her mind??!!!) I am intriqued however by your desire to start a site of your own addressing this issue. Nick, if you do would you please come back and give us the link? I will be one of the first to run over and sign your petition. Thank you so much for signing our guestbook in support for the originals in the film. All my best, Diane P.S. The role was not all but written for Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote it for her, his wife at the time and she was wonderful in it. It is a tragedy that the film was not completed in 1990 when it was ready to go with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman cast in the lead roles. We all lost something very precious when ALW called a halt to production. He lost too, didn't he? His work would have lived forever through those two, seen as it was meant to be, by the people who breathed the life into their now legendary roles. A very bad decision in retrospect, and from the looks of this and other sites on the net a very unpopular choice too. |

I have a debatable subject I have not yet seen anyone post. It is a quote from the book, which the play and movies are based upon: "The voice without a body went on singing; and certainly Roul had never in his life heard anything more absolutely and heroically sweet, more gloriously incidious, more delicate, more powerful, in short, more irresistibly triumphant."-Gaston Leroux. Out of curiousity, does THAT sound like John Travolta to you? Well, I may only be 13, but I listen to the original casting on CD practicly every day, and I know that Michael Crawford is the only man on this earth that could have a voice as powerful and beautiful as Gaston described. If they cannot let Michael Crawford be the Phantom, then I am against this movie all the way. Scince the play was created 13yrs ago, I never did get the chance to see it, and I don't want to pay 50 dollars out of my savings to see the play without mc in it. I would love to see a movie about it. I have read the book, I know all the songs by heart, and I don't want to lose my privelage of seeing Mr. Crawford, who has the most beautiful and unforgettable voice, get what he and his fans have always deserved, to see him in a major motion picture. Please send this letter to WB and ALW, they have to hear that even younger people are protesting to have some pretty boy with a high voice who couldn't hold a note if his life depended on it to play the complicated and beautiful part of the phantom. My friends, who think I am weird for liking the music all agree that no one can top Mr. Crawford's voice and that Andrew Lloyed Webber is not only betraying himself, but the person that made the play famous, Michael Crawford. It is a travesty that someone could be so cold. A huge fan, Katie |

I've seen plenty of movie versions where they have done exactly that, the 1989 movie with the guy who plays Freddie Krueger as the Phantom, and all the movie versions have sickened me because they ruined a very beautiful story, and ruined the character of the Phantom. The second thing they should do, is give Michalel Crawford a role he created, loves, and would dearly love to do on film. I think he's bankable, to use Hollywood terminology. If they can't be true to the story, or give Crawford the role, I'd prefer they didn't make this movie. |
