Comments: Hello, Why does ALW insist on changing the hugely successful POTO stage version when doing the movie? We DO NOT WANT more dialogue!!!! New songs would be fine as long as Michael Crawford is chosen as the actor for the movie!!! I realize ALW wrote POTO for Sarah/Christine as the focus but the theatre-going audience and CD buying public HAVE AN AFFINITY FOR THE PHANTOM AND MICHAEL CRAWFORD'S ACTING/VOCAL ABILITIES!! HE MOVES EVERYONE WHO HEARS/SEES HIM!!! ALW cannot keep his head in the sand over this issue. MICHAEL'S PERFORMANCE IS SENSUAL, MOVING AND IMMORTAL!! IT MUST BE PRESERVED ON VIDEO!! The worldwide public will speak with our money when the movie is released-WE WILL NOT SEE IT IF MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS NOT THE PHANTOM AND THIS MIS-CASTING FIASCO ALLOWED TO CONTINUE!! ALW just found out POTO is the most successful musical of the century--MICHAEL CRAWFORD'S PERFORMANCE/VOICE IS A HUGE REASON FOR THE SUCCESS!!! IF A FORMULA ISN'T BROKE, WHY FIX IT??!! WHY CAN'T YOU SEE THAT!!?? WHY DO YOU MOCK THE PEOPLE WHO MADE YOUR MUSICALS SO SUCCESSFUL??!! Antonio B.'s last few movies were not blockbusters or hugely successful-doesn't that tell you all something?!! Maybe the boycott has began--on anything having to do with Antonio until he backs off and let Michael Crawford have the role he created and made his own!! A POTO Phan/Michael Crawford advocate. Please listen to the public-do not shut us out or we will do the same with your and WB future projects!!

Comments: If Michael Crawford is not selected for the movie version of the Phantom of the opera, it will be a gross mistake made by ALW and the producers of the movie. Antonio is no Phantom nor does he have the voice of one who haunts a theater in London where this all takes place. Antonio will definitely be out of place and character. There is only one phantom: Michael Crawford!!!

Comments: I first saw this magical play about 3 years ago and I fell in love with it. So I decided that someday I will be making the role of Christine at the Majestic Theater (where I first saw the "Phantom").By this time I had already graduated in English and was already learning classical and modern ballet. When we came back from NY to San Paul(Brazil- my home town)I immediately started to take singing classes with the best teacher of my country, who studied and performed together with Maria Callas for many years. Now I'm 18 and I'm a professional ballet dancer and opera singer that also knows by heart more than 10 broadway's musicals. In addiction to all this I happened to have a really white skin and long brown curlyed hair -luck or coincidence? As you can see, I would gladly work in any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's productions but, as a fan, I'd really be disapointed if Mr.Michael "Phantom" Crawford were replaced in such an important event as the shooting of a Phantom's movie.I truely respect Bandera's work, but I know that this movie wont be as sucessfull as expected if the Phantom himself is not in it. Everybody knows that entretainment industries such as The Really Usefull Group have most of their public based on the tourism. As a Brazilian, rich tourist I ask you to think carefully about everything I said. Sincerily and with love. Adriana Naccache e-mail: deanacc@yahoo.com

Comments: Dear whoever gets this! I truly hope that Michael Crawford gets to play the leading role in The Phantom of the Opera! He has proven to the world his genius in quite perfect to play the Phantom. He has inspired me in so many ways. I am only 13 and I have listened to him and the entire origianal London cast every night for the last year and several months. I saw The Phantom of the Opera 2 times, but I know just as much of it as any fan could possibly know. I love Michael Crawford and I always will! If there is gonna be a movie, Than Michael Crawford should play Phantom! Alariza Nevarez.

Comments: I agree entirely that Michale Crawford is the only person who should even be considered to play the title role. To often I have seen Hollywood place some "big name" person in a major role who just is not qualified to play the part (I personally believe that Madonna did an abominable job) If Crawford is cast, I'll guarentee that I'll see the move about a dozen times and take everyone I know with me each time, but if he doesn't play the Phantom, I highly doubt that I'll even consider seeing it at al.

Comments: I think it's time that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and the rest of the "Phantom" troup realize that Michael Crawford is and always be "The Phantom of the Opera". I never had the pleasure of seeing Michael onstage and I was looking forward to seeing the movie just so I could not only see him perform as the Phantom at long last but I could look forward to, eventually, owning it as well. I admit, Antonio Banderas was wonderful in "Evita" and would be excellent as Raoul if they are determined to have him in the Phantom movie, but he can never match Michael Crawford. If Michael plays the Phantom, I will be the first in line to see the movie.

Comments: I'm only 14 years old, but I love "Phantom of the Opera". In 8th grade (last year), we had to listen to the cd of "Phantom of the Opera" in music class, and I fell in love with Michael Crawford's voice right then and there. I borrowed the cd from my sister, who also fell in love with his voice when she heard it in that same class two years before (hey, maybe it's something genetic), and I listen to it practically every night. Michael Crawford has a beautiful voice, and, not only that, he portrays the Phantom so perfectly that I can't imagine anybody else filling the role of the Phantom the way he does. I was actually somewhat inspired by his voice. He took my apprecation of music to a whole new level. Because of him, I'm now taking voice lessons and getting into musical programs at school. I'm going to audition for Madrigals next year, and I keep dreaming about the day that I could be in a production of "Phantom of the Opera". To sum this all up, Michael Crawford's emotional portrayal of the Phantom is unsurpassed, and I can't imagine some other guy playing the part even half as well.

Comments: Comment on an excerpt from the Daily Mail 12/13/99 article:

"Dunaway was fired from the musical, allegedly for not being up to the vocal demands of the leading role of Norma Desmond, but won a f250,000 settlement amid much acrimony."

So Faye was fired "allegedly for not being up to the vocal demands of the leading role." Wait until he starts working with untrained, chain-smoking AB! He'll see what "not being up to the vocal demands" really means!! And I don't care what ALW might thinks, any movie that has the name "Phantom of the Opera" attached to it in conjunction with his own name is going to be compared to the original, and the more he changes it the more comparison and criticism there will be.

Comments: On GMA, Joel Segal reviewed, "Anna and The King." It only got a C+! He said he kept expecting the music from "The King & I" to play in certain spots and was so disappointed that it didn't. He picked it apart saying things like, "now this song should play here... but it didn't." (Not exact quotes, just the flavor of his conversation.) Now.... we can all very well imagine how the *new* Phantom will be raked over the coals if they change the music and don't use the original Phantom when he's available, more talented than ever, and willing! They're making such a huge mistake! We won't have to say much IF it happens. The media will tear them apart on our behalf! Cathy

Comments: We are posting this here for our next mailing to Warner Bros. and RUG. (Jane made us do it!)

I am feeling a bit irritated over this Daily Mail article for many reasons. Sooooooo, I am going to take a few items and kick it a bit.......

:Daily Mail Article -
by Alison Boshoff, Showbusiness Editor

:Everyone knows it is a huge hit – but the Phantom of the Opera was revealed yesterday to be the biggest of all time. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has taken almost f2billion worldwide since it was first performed 13 years ago, more than any other production on screen or stage.

Okay, if this property is so big and has taken in so much money....why is Warner Bros. treating this like it could fail before the fact? And if this many people saw it and it is so successful.......how in the world can any of the players expect that the fans are going to want to see an altered movie or an actor in the leading role who will never be able to live up to the original Phantom and the talented actors who followed him? Warner Bros. has the rights to an absolute treasure and they haven’t figured it out yet!

:He said yesterday that he was surprised by the news that the production had reached such a landmark.
“I had no idea that we were anywhere near that” he said. “I knew obviously that it was successful, but I didn’t know how much it had taken until some bright spark was looking out facts and figures for the Millennium and phoned around to find out how it was doing everywhere.

The same bright spark should also tell Lord Lloyd-Webber that it is the original interpretation of the play that brought people back to see the show over and over again.

:I would say it is one musical that I feel we got absolutely right from the start. The staging by Hal Prince was not changed at all from rehearsal.

If you got this right from the start... WHY ARE YOU SUPPOSEDLY CHANGING IT NOW???????? There can be only one reason that I can even fathom. Banderas. He can’t sing Phantom as the original AND YOU KNOW IT!!! You have to know it, I refuse to believe that you are now stone deaf and can no longer discern a voice that is not up to par with what is needed for the role of the Phantom. Michael Crawford was your first choice, you need to go back and think this through....... quickly would work for me.

:The Phantom also did amazing repeat business. There is a hard core of quite young women aged 15 or 16 who go back again and again, though I have no idea why.”

I AM COMPLETELY INSULTED BY THIS. Lord Lloyd-Webber, you seriously need to go take a good look at our guestbooks. The first time I saw Phantom I had just turned THIRTY. Darn it, there are many teens who return time and time again, but there are many seniors.....and men....and women of ALL AGES....and people from ALL walks of life. This is really a shallow, completely closeminded statement and you are not on track.

:Lord Lloyd-Webber, a Tory peer and one of Britain’s richest men, plans to bring Phantom to the screen next. There has been controversy over who should play the leading part on screen. John Travolta was reportedly offered the part, and now the favoured contender is Antonio Banderas, much to the disgust of the ‘Save the Phantom’ lobby group which wants the original Phantom, Michael Crawford, to have the part. Lloyd Webber expects the script to be finished in the next few weeks.

You better believe there is a controversy. We have been saying that Michael Crawford is a part of this story whether he is now cast or not. A huge photo of Michael Crawford was printed along with this article, he and this campaign are going to be brought up in the future along with news of the movie. Like it or not, we are around to stay. I CAN ONLY DREAM that the script will actually be finished in “the next few weeks” and Webber will get this mess into production. I am ready for closure and if he is going to ruin this thing, let’s get it over with.

:“We are going to cast Christine first,” he said. “Although everyone thinks about the Phantom he is on stage far less than she is, he is not on that much, it is more the illusion of it. What we need to find for Christine is someone who is gorgeous, an operatic singer, and aged around 17.

Andrew what are you thinking???????????????????????? Sounds to me you are justifying using your protégé. Why does Christine have to be this young? I always thought all she needed to be was INNOCENT. Untouched. I think you should be concentrating on QUALITY NOT AGE. And you better address the issue of the Phantom MUCH MORE CLOSELY. Whether you want to accept this or not, the fans care very deeply who will portray him.

:If Andrea Corr took some singing lessons she would be perfect. Catherine Zeta Jones would have been wonderful awhile ago when she was in the chorus of 42nd Street, but I think she might be a bit too sophisticated for us these days.”

Catherine Zeta Jones would be a FABULOUS choice. If they cast her they could use Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Antonio Banderas as Raoul. Talk about casting!!!! They cover all the bases with this one. I am certain she is a fine enough actress to pull off an innocent Christine. They should test her, she has a name and reteaming her with Banderas as Raoul would work in their favor.

:The multi-millionaire composer says that he is bewildered by some of the hostility he encounters, but puts it down to his poor public image.

OH MY GOSH. Would somebody hold me back here? HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE HOSTILITY????????
People have spent TWO YEARS CAMPAIGNING, BEEN IN NEWSPAPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, TAKEN OUT EIGHT TRADE ADS, WRITTEN THOUSANDS OF LETTERS TO HIM AND HE DOESN’T GET IT?????????????????????????????? My gosh, what does it take for him to get a clue? For heavens sake! Start caring a bit about other people and your fans! He thinks he has a poor public image now...... wait until he massacres “Phantom.” He is going to be despised by literally millions!!!!!!!

:“I do think that people don’t understand me at all, they don’t understand that I simply love musical theatre. The criticism comes from people who want to put me in a pigeon-hole. My next musical is about Northern Ireland and I am writing it with Ben Elton. If I was a terrible pompous unimaginative Tory I don’t suppose I would be doing it.

Sigh. IF you love musical theatre, please, we are begging you, show some integrity. Do this thing right, or don’t do it!!!!!!! Don’t ruin the play and destroy the memory of the performance so well loved the world over. Shelf this thing first. Please. But more than this, do it right! Give the world the record we will cherish. Michael Crawford was perfection as the Phantom. You knew this once, please go back to your original vision.

:People do miss the fact that because I love what I do so much, I genuinely do get despondent if something goes wrong. I was in a terrible depression over all the troubles with Faye Dunaway on Sunset Boulevard, I almost gave up theatre and writing completely, it made me so depressed. It was a terrible mess.”

A much, much “bigger mess” will await him if he does what the reports are saying he is about to do!

Comments: Support for Michael comes when you least expect it. I wore my "Box 5" campaign tee to the grocery store today. The young man who carried my groceries to the car commented that he liked my tee shirt. He looked like he was barely 15. I asked him if he was familiar with the POTO and if he was familiar with Michael Crawford's role as the Phantom. He said that even though he had never seen the play, he was very familiar with it and Michael's role. He even commented on Michael's new Christmas Album. When I mentioned to him what ALW and WB had in mind for the movie, he just groaned. I just don't understand why ALW and WB can't see what everyone else sees: Michael's appeal goes across the generations and the genders. It is Michael who will attract the audience and the repeat audiences. I know this is a bit winded, but I was so surprised at this young man's response to the campaign tee, that I wanted to share it with you. Beverly

"Campaign Ribbons"

I came to this site one night and when I left I said a prayer.
Give the mask to Michael Crawford, return him to the Phantom’s lair.

Lord, how could they cast another? They all know it’s so unfair.
They should share our strong misgivings, but money talks, so they don’t care.

All these months, our hearts still aching, reason shows no sign of wakeing.

We speak again and hope we’re read by the new management over there.
We want Michael, Michael only, Crawford in the Phantom’s lair.

We send letters by the hundred. We’re in papers everywhere.
Thousands call for Michael Crawford! How can they be unaware?

They want Banderas because of name recognition. So why not cast him as Raol and give Crawford the Phantom role. If you ask me this will work just fine. Banderas gets a big role and the studio gets it's bankable star. This would work well for the studio. RG

The play was still good but nothing like the original. Antonio Banderas as Phantom will be as big a flop as Madonna as Evita. I just saw Banderas singing with Sarah Brightman on PBS for the Weber 50th Birthday gala and he was terrible. The Phantom with a Mexican accent, my god what an obscenity. It's like putting a sombrero on the Mona Lisa. I hope Warner Brothers wakes up, they have an opportunity to create a classic, and not just another flop like Evita. Sincerely, Walter Brealey

After monthes of pestering my parents I got to see it for my birthday/Christmas in Toronto. I was totally blowen away. My mother was convinced I would hate it. That is my story. First I would like to say WHY BANDARES? He's a decent actor and all but the singing is not there. I play music every day at school so I know when something sounds out of tune to all you Hollywood types who might be reading this. If Lloyd Webber doesn't get out of the hole he's digging he'll say "Why didn't I listen to all the Crawford fans?" as soon as the "terror" of a bad film hits him hard. I want this movie to be made so I can watch it. I'll be going to college soon so chances are I'll won't see it for close to ten years. I can not wait that long.

Comments: I can't imagine anyone more talented and expressive who could bring to the movie version of Phantom more than Michael Crawford did in creating the stage personna. Warner Brothers definitely is misguided in believing anyone other than Michael Crawford is needed for a successful movie.

Comments: At the end of the nineteenth century and the begining of the twentieth century magnificent performances were lost and not preserved on film for future generations because film technology had not been fully developed, That is understandable. I find it ironic that now, at the end of the twentieth century, the technology exists to capture a once in a lifetime performance but filmakers don't have the foresight (brains, talent, whatever you want to call it) to realize the importance of the preservation of what has been acclaimed as one of the theatrical performances of this century. That is unbelievable!

Comments: They can't replace Michael Crawford with Antonio Banderas! oi, you, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! Michael Crawford IS the Phantom Of the Opera. His prescence (or indeed- lack of it) is vital! And if they do cast the afore mentioned hollywood glamour boy, I will (and everyone else I know will) certainly be boycotting Warner Bros. I'm not sure that Warner Bros. knows how widespread this is. I don't think that Sarah Brightman will be able to pull this off without Michael Crawford, his passion and vocal range is an absolute must.

I am a huge fan of Michael Crawford and strongly believe that Michael should be cast in the role of the Phantom in the up coming movie "The Phantom of the Opera," if Michael would like to be in the movie. I believe this for several reasons, but most importantly because Michael IS the Phantom, If it were not for his interpretation I do not believe the show would have been as successful as it was and still is. His voice and his presence is the essence of the play. The idea that the role would be offerd to anyone else is proposterous. As a member of the Michael Crawford International Fan Club I respect and admire the man behind the mask and believe he is a truely wonderful man and gifted actor. Sincerely, Kristen Diana Niles :)

Comments: Finally, someone who agrees with me. I have seen the phantom of the opera as many times as I've been able to, I've absolutely loved it, and who was the first phantom I ever heard? Of course it was Michael Crawford. It really doesn't seem like much of an issue to most people, but for those who really love the Phantom, it's really important that Michael Crawford be cast, and here's why: His voice and presence is the single most endearing part of the musical. Most "Phantom"-lovers are very attached to his voice and his powerful performance.. for many the Phantom means little without him. I know dozens of avid phantom-goers who are outraged that Michael Crawford will not be performing in the film version. I beg Andrew Lloyd Webber: People may go see it, but the Antonio Banderas fans are slight. He has little charisma, and very little charm. Michael is a born Phantom. Malia

Comments: This is a great site! I just love Michael Crawford, he's the best singer in the world. The very thought of him not staring in the role HE originated is shocking. Everyone who is 'a Phantom Phan' should know that Michael Crawford (or at least any other person whose played him on the stage) should be the lead in this wonderful production. And the other aspect that bothers me is, Antonio Banderos (or however you spell his name) is picked to be the Phantom. Don't get me wrong, Antonio is a great actor, and I enjoy his movies, but you have to face that he ISN'T the Phantom. I heard him sing on Andrew Lloyd Webber's fifty year anniversary, and he couldn't sing the part. I couldn't make out what the man was saying. So I hope that there is still a chance for the great Michael Crawford to be in this powerful role. It needs his soft touch. I'd like to close saying 'I LOVE YOU MICHAEL!'

I have been doing theatre for as long as I can remember and my cousin Todd does movies, we have both agreed that no TV actor could ever fully do the amazing job it takes to do a role like The Phantom. Mr. Crawford is clearly the only one who could ever play the role in the amazing way it needs to be played. Now, the movie, I don't believe, will ever be able to fully allow the viewer to begin to imagine the amazement the theatre viewer is allowed when at the real show. But, for those non-theatre delinquents it should be quite a thrill and I am quite thrilled at the prospect of having Phantom in my very own home. Sincerely, Heather Light

Comments: Hi, I don't usually put comments in guestbooks like this, but my cousin said I should and so I am. I would like to say that I don't understand why the people who are making this movie are considering using anyone other than Michael Crawford to play the role of Eric. I am a big fan of the book and I must say I am apalled that Andrew Weber is backing this new book about the phantom in New York! This is obviously some attempt to make it seem ok for them to cast a younger man as the main character. What a crock! You don't rewrite a book just to make it work for a movie. And who are these people to say they have any idea what the original was really meant to be? No one knows what that was meant to be...except the person who wrote it! And also...if they are going to change the musical around and take out the songs that made it great, put in unknown music, and add more words...what right do they have to call it the Phantom of the Opera? And why would they do that just so they could cast some so-so actor who can't sing? I mean...there are a lot of actors out there who can...heck Mel Gibson sings as good as Antonio Banderas! At least use a realistic argument about box office draw...Banderas is lame man. His movies are duds and not even John Travolta wants this role...you don't see anyone else clammoring for it either! And we know why! It's because these guys are dedicated actors who either know their limitations or respect the fact that Michael Crawford is the BEST...there is the old saying "it ain't over until the fat lady sings" well...the fat lady has finished, the votes are in and Michael Crawford has finished...and everyone with a lick of sense KNOWS they will never be THAT GOOD! Thank you for your time!

Comments: I received the "Phantom of the Opera" London cast album for Christmas a few years ago and fell in love with the musical. It was the way that Michael Crawford portrayed the character of the phantom that made listening to it so enjoyable. When I heard that Warner Brothers and Andrew Loydd Webber were going to make "Phantom" into a movie I was overjoyed with excitment. I saw "Phantom" on Broadway four times this past summer. Nothing can ever compare to this jewel that Andrew gave us. I also had the opportunity to see Mr. Crawford when he came to Baltimore for his concert tour. It was wonderful to hear him live and in person. Even though Michael Crawford was not dressed as the phantom, as soon as you saw him, the character was alive and well inside of him. It was wonderful to see him perform the phantom live. I also had the opportunity to see Mr. Bandares sing "Phantom of the Opera" as I watched Andrew Lloyd Webbers 50th birthday party. I respect Mr. Bandares for the many roles he has played in the movies over the years, but when I heard and watched him, the only thing I saw and heard was Mr. Bandares and not the phantom. Mr. Bandares has never performed the phantom on stage and has never formed the character out of nothing, as Michael Crawford has done. It would be a waist of everyone's time if Mr. Bandares was cast as the phantom. He would make an excellent Raoul. For me, "Phantom" will never be the same if Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Brothers take the role away from Michael Crawford. A few years back Andrew, you decided that Michael was going to play the role of the phantom in the movie version. Whatever happened since then, I have no idea, but I think you need to give us an explanation of why you have changed your mind and why you do not respect your fans. You never threw a 10th anniversary party for the fans of the "Phantom of the Opera" and now you want to deny us the honor of having the world's phantom cast in the movie. I guess I will never look at you or your company again in the same way and I guess I can no longer support the work that you do. I can not support anyone that would not take the feelings and opinions of the people that have made you who you are today. Remember, we might be just lowly people to you, but we are the ones that are going to keep you in the income bracket and the lifestyle that you are now. This goes for those at Warner Brothers as well. If you anger your fans, there is going to be many empty seats in your theaters, many albums and videos unsold and your new productions are going to fail, because no one is going to see them. This is especially risky when you are going to be opening "Whistle Down the Wind" agian. It will whistle alright, right out of the U.S. and into the garbage can, because if you can not show us the respect we deserve as your fans, then we can offer no respect to you and support your NEW or old works. I guess it is a sad break for all of us, but we will not be loosing any MONEY on this one, YOU WILL and WARNER BROTHERS. I hope you will take this into consideration before you make your final decison and pass "the point of no return."

Comments: I saw Michael Crawford after a show. He couldn't speak because he had laryngitis. I couldn't believe it because of the way he sang during the show. He was saving his voice for the evening show. This just goes to show how much the man gives to his art and his dedication to Erik. I went to dinner and wasted time around the city until the time the evening show let out. I talked to the audience. They all said he put on a great show and didn't believe me when I said he couldn't talk. I learned later that the man has broken bones, set himself on fire, among other physical problems while giving all for a role. If he gives all, so should Mr Webber give him all. It is only fair!

Comments: It is the end of the millenium and time to learn the lessons of our century. One of these is that original Broadway stars do better in film adaptations of their successes than movie-actor replacements do. We have lost so many great performances this way over the years. If Michael Crawford is not cast in the "Phantom" movie, it will be just another of this century's many artistic disappointments. He who will not learn from history is doomed to repeat it. May those with the power to change it, do so.

Comments: I have posted here before and decided it was time to do so again...once again I note with concern that there is more and more talk of this production of The Phantom of the Opera being made without Mr. Michael Crawford playing the role he immortalized on the stage. This is an insult not only to that man but to the people who have spent a LOT of time, effort and MONEY to see the Broadway performance of this breath taking work! I am talking about the the people who love the theater and know the theater! These are the people who will be bUying the tickets to the movie version! The people who have paid major money to see it on stage! They are more than willing to pay to see the original Phantom play the role he DEFINED...and if just half of them saw the MOVIE enough times to equal what they spent just to see one live show...WELL! THINK of the money! THINK of the numbers! Impressive any way you look at it! DO NOT make the mistake of pandering to us some lesser person! Just because someone sings a song does NOT make him a vocalist any more than saying a line in a "Tidy Bowl" commercial makes them an actor! You do not see other actors being bandied about as possibilities for the role of the Phantom doing concert tours or having Cd's in the top of several charts! You do not see them time and again doing not only Broadway, but SRO concerts across the country! Think about it. We want the best...Michael Crawford is the best. Deal with it and let us have what we want. you are NOT going to get our money ANY OTHER WAY!!!!!

Comments: Hello Everyone. Name's Steve and I'm from Liverpool, England. I have adored the music form Phantom for 10 years and last August I finally went to see the show at the Liverpool Empire just after H.M. Queen had reopened it after it's refurbishment (which included the widening of the stage) which enabled Phantom and Les Mis to be staged there for the first time. (Incidentely it was the first time H. M. Queen had seen Phantom as well!!) I just wanted to say how "spellbound" I was with it. The Chandalier going up at the beginning, the Phantom "appearing" all over the theatre. I can still remember a lot of it now and it's 4 months later. And the actor who played the Phantom "Scott Davies" was the understudy to the London Production. The way he cried was enough to make you break down in tears yourself. I would love to play the Phantom, but somehow I don't think that will happen (though I do have a good voice). The critics said that the Liverpool Production was better than the present London production!!! Anyway, enough from me. Just like to say I support your campaign, but please can you tell me do you think you can do anything to change Lord Lloyd Webber's mind? All power to your elbow anyway. You have my support (for what it's worth)

I am currently 29 years old and it is my wish to include my voice to those that would like Michael Crawford to portray once more the role that made him an unforgettable singer. In the 1980's He portrayed The Phantom, a tragic hero in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. That was an unforgettable performance. Michael made the character what it is now, a three dimensional being that radiates emotion, passion, and above all breathes life. Everybody else that has portrayed the Phantom in successive representations has found a role model in that firts portrayal by our beloved Michael. Not only that. He has a wonderful voice that has not aged a bit. I wonder, who else can bring to the big screen all the glory of the Phantom, than the man that gave him the image we all know? I personally think that even though there are many talented people with the qualitites to give some life to the character, only Michael could be able to lift Eric from the flat world of the big screen and transport him into our world not only with his talented acting but also by his incredible voice. Mr Webber... if you want to make this a MEMORABLE picture, allow Michael Crawford show his powerful talent talent on screen, and you will have a movie that will remembered for all time, truly a CLASSIC. Sincerely, Isabel Gonzalez

He definitely has the voice and the acting ability - no one can question that. He has done movies before so he won't have trouble adjusting to a different medium. He also has a big enough name that he can draw HUGE crowds to the box offices. This movie will be big deal, especially among musical theatre fans. They're going to want to see someone associated with the role of the Phantom or at least someone who is associated with musical theatre. Don't get me wrong, I think Antonio Banderas was marvelous as Che. But I don't think that the musical should be changed to accommodate Banderas' inferior vocal ability. Everyone knows that you find a star to fit the role, you don't change the role to fit the star.

I just wanted to write a short note letting whomever out there who's reading this know that the only man who can portray Erik with the sensitivity and depth necessary for the character is Michael Crawford. He doesn't just play the character; he becomes the character. No one, and I've seen a few try, can give themselves over to the role the way that Mr. Crawford is able to. It is a shame that he has not been given the honor he deserves to reprise the role on film. It's a shame for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as well, for it seems that he will only discover his folly too late, when his movie flops at the box-office (for I can't imagine myself or anyone I know who would want to see the movie without Michael). Can you imagine what "The King and I" would have been like without Yul Brynner? I can only hope that someone comes to their senses before it is too late; because what could have been a timeless classic will fade into the background as a laughable flop.

Comments: Kim Wood, Age 18, Evansville, IN, USA - I think Michael Crawford should play the role of the Phantom because only a classically trained singer could do justice to the role.

Comments: Anna Eason Flanagan, Age15, Just because Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music to the POTO,Michael Crawford MADE the Phantom character come alive and vivid, like you were actually back a hundred years in the Paris Opera house...

Comments: Hi, I would like to add my two cents worth to this Campaign. My husband and I have been involved for over a year in this drive to see Michael Crawford cast in the on-again, off-again movie version of The Phantom of the Opera Play. I believe this uncertainty concerning the movie has gone on long enough. It is time Lord Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros. get their combined act together and get this movie onto celluloid now. What better way to end this Century and bring in a new one than having the Opening Night of the most anticipated motion picture of all time "The Phantom of the Opera" starring Michael Crawford in his original World shattering role as "Erik". If you would like to have Michael Crawford Starring with Antonio Banderas, fine do that, Mr. Banderas would make a wonderful "Raoul". In closing, I would emphasize, that Warner Bros. demand from Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber the original contents of the "Rights" to a film version bought by Warner Bros., of the Phantom Play, be adhered to by Lord Lloyd Webber and nothing less. Thank you...

Comments: Michael Crawford deserves to be the Phantom. I'm only 13 and I've seen the POTO twice and I have original recording. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman will always be the Phantom and Christine. This campaign is fabulous!!! Keep up the great work and we'll have the entire original cast in this movie!!

Comments: I HOPE THAT MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE PHANTOM IN THE NEW MOVIE BECAUSE HE HAS A SPECTACULAR VOICE AND HE IS A MAGNIFICENT ACTOR.
