I will NEVER see this movie if it stars Antonio Banderas. Andrew Lloyd Webber has compromised his own artistic genious for the sake of the almighty dollar, sacrificed loyalty to the fans who have supported him all these years, and back handed a wonderful, talented and much loved artist, who brought so much of himself to Lord Webber's beautiful play Phantom of the Opera, and created the Phantom so loved by theatre audiences today. We have been mailing letters to The Really Useful Group and Warner Bros. for months, they are not listening to the fans, and I for one will no longer support them. In the case of the treatment of Michael Crawford, I will never forgive Andrew Lloyd Webber, and I just wonder how he is able to sleep nights. Yes, you have the right to use a box office draw in this movie, and I have the right to keep my memories intact of the greatest actor I was ever privileged to see in my lifetime. It was an honor to sit in the Ahmanson Theatre and view the performance of this man who is destined to become a legend. We have been e-mailing the media for months, trying to get the word out about how the fans feel. I guess it just isn't a big enough story, upset fans. What a shame, so many have put so much into this. The little guy has no voice, it is being proven right now, and Hollywood could care less about producing classic films with the best possible cast and making movies to be proud of. Yes, you'll suck in the unknowing moviegoer, you'll make your money, but in the end, we all lose. Thank God that someone had more class and smarts when they filmed "The King and I" with Yul Brynner, his performance will live forever for us all. It is a tragedy that Michael Crawford is not being afforded the same opportunity, and his Phantom will be lost to history and to all those who never had the opportunity to see him in the role. By the way, you may see money from this movie without Michael Crawford, (maybe) but it won't be from me! |

His powerful yet soothing voice has touched me, especially as the role of the Phantom. I have never seen him perform the role in person, but I can still, through his voice, feel the dispair, anger, love and various other emotions of the Phantom. When I think of the Phantom of the Opera I immediately think of Michael Crawford, THE Phantom. No one else brings such strength to the role. I agree that should he be cast, he would have a chance at an Academy Award as millions would feel the torment and deep sadness within the Phantom's soul through Michael's portrayl. In an era of bad casting choices, I hope the right one will be made for the Phantom movie. |

I will unbelievably disappointed if he is not cast in the movie version. Not just because I have never had the pleasure of seeing him perform the Phantom and this will be my only chance, but also because I think the Phantom of the Opera is a spellbinding, magical creation. It would be disgrace and disservice to cast any one but the best!!! That would of course be..Michael Crawford!! This is a fantastic website. I will do what ever I can..and if we all pull together..maybe we can make a difference!!! |

Everytime he performs (in concert, CD, TV, etc.) he is selling the Phantom Movie for Warners, et al. He's been selling it on his own for 8-10 years now. He has brought the audience to their front door and they thank him by stabbing him in the back. They seem to expect us to have been oblivious to this whole thing. Yea right! They are unnecessarily creating such a backlash and an animosity towards this movie, that it may never be made. Talent, dedication, and hard work should be rewarded! Give Michael back his mask that he so deservedly earned. Pat Donovan |

Any "executive" feeling that Michael Crawford does not have the appeal to draw an audience needs to watch the PBS special (that tape is now for sale in video stores, by the way) or talk to the thousands of people buying tickets to attend his live concerts. I am writing letters to both places, and I will pass the word. Thanks for having a place to "sound off" about this!! |

I cannot believe that Warner Brothers and Mr. Webber can be so blind and so culturally ignorant that they choose simply by the fame of a name rather than by the knowledge and the love Crawford has for the character he created. There is no way that Mr. Banderas can come close to matching the love and the passion that Crawford brings to this role and without that passion, the movie is better off not being made at all. |

This Ranger was played by an actor named Clayton Moore and was very popular for many years. Some time later, Hollywood, in it's infinite stupidity, chose to offend the Gods by Legally restraining Mr. Moore from wearin' the Mask so they could make a movie with a Slick, good lookin' Hollywood Actor. Bad Idea Dudes. Bad Karma! It turned out the Horses could deliver the lines better than "Cowboy Slick" and all his part was dubbed. It didn't help! The film was a Texas size flop and the good lookin' imposter was lost in obscurity. Some lessons are never learned. Now we have a bunch of fellas who want to take the mask away from the best damn actor, either side of the Mississippi, Hell, either side of the Pond, and use the Vampire fella, son of slick. It don't make sense. I want to see Michael Crawford's Phantom. The youngster that did it in Austin was fine...But we Texans, we like the best. We denand the best. And just now the best is Michael Crawford. I Thank You Kindly, Audie, Texas Rose |

| Name: Emily Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: USA Time: 1998-06-20 00:09:21 Comments: I find it more than a little alarming that a man with the evident genius Andrew Lloyd Webber has demonstrated in his composing could allow himself to be swayed into casting a tone-deaf man with no acting ability (I speak, of course, of Antonio Banderas) at the request of his flavour-of-the-month wife, who to my understanding has little or no musical training and who is more at home in a stable than in the theatre. We know for fact that while Mr. Banderas is arguably an attractive man, his redeeming screen qualities stop at his physical appearance. As evidenced by his mediocre-at-best performance in "Evita," Mr. Banderas is so obsessed with his own looks that he is incapable of completing a scene without turning around and flashing the camera a thoroughly uncalled-for and utterly inappropriate "come-hither" look, as if to say, "I'm so sexy I turn *myself* on." He further demonstrated in "Evita" that he has absolutely no vocal talent. It would seem, then, a foolhardy choice to select a good-looking but talentless man to play a character whose two claims to fame are his hideous physical deformities and his seductive voice. We don't need Mr. Banderas' good looks for this role -- his famous face would, in fact, be hidden behind a mask and several layers of makeup anyway -- and we desperately need to avoid the kind of vocal butchery he is likely to inflict on the songs we have grown to know and love over the years. Watching Antonio Banderas play the Phantom would have the same effect on my future theatrical experiences that surviving a rape would have on my future sexual experiences: I could never really enjoy it again without reliving the horror of that one violent attack. Wake up, Andrew. Madeleine is a great equestrian and is no doubt a wonderful wife and mother as well, but a casting agent she is not. You wouldn't hire a veterinarian to deliver one of your children. Why allow this horsewoman to cast one of your musicals -- particularly when she was in no way involved with the creation of that musical? You once gave Sarah Brightman -- and the world -- a beautiful gift. Don't take the demise of your marriage out on the rest of us by letting your latest wife destroy that beautiful gift out of jealousy or ignorance. Phantom doesn't just belong to Sarah. It belongs to the world. To trash it with the addition of a mediocre Hollywood glitz machine would be the artistic and moral equivalent of castrating Michelangelo's David. Such an act would be a crime against humanity. Please ... avoid the embarrassment of another "Jesus Christ Superstar." Abandon Banderas and bring back Michael Crawford. He is and always will be the one true Phantom. To deprive us of the opportunity to see him recreate that role on film would be unforgivable. |

He is the quintessential Phantom and , as anyone who has seen his concert tour this year can tell you, he is as completely in touch with and involved with the character as ever. I would like to do whatever I can, especially in terms of letter writing, to help further this campaign to encourage WB to cast Michael. | Name: Brooke Neely Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Missouri Time: 1998-06-19 20:08:24 Comments: These Hollywood types who are trying to hire musically talentless pretty boys need to realize one simple fact- You will not be able to see anyone's face beneath the makeup. No one will see the show because they've got the hots for Antonio. The sensuality of the character must be expressed through music and body language. MC has proven that he can do this. He's obviously got the role down pat, he's in great shape now, and he has really earned the role through his many perfomances (1400). MC is an a sex symbol and very poular with the teen crowd. There's no reason NOT to give him the role. |

Frandkly, I have seen the Phantom three times, never with Mr. Crawford, and I loved it each time, but I want to see him in the movie. Michael Crawford has the talent and the presence to carry off this role on the big screen. It's time Hollywood started catering to the middle aged audience and stopped pushing these 20 and 30 something actors at us. As a woman of 48, Michael Crawford definitely appeals to me more than John Travolta (ugh please!) or Antonio Banderas. This happened when Michael was the Phantom. If anyone can bring people to the screen he could. He played the role in LA NY and London. Think about the Phantom. He is suppose to be the angel of music, and lets face it no ones voice is as soft or more like an angels then Crawfrods. Travolta does not have the right build and sorry but the Phantom was not mexican so bandares would never do. Think even more about the Phantom..... He is suppose to have a hypnotic voice.... Michael has this as proven by his role in EFX... in Vegas. This show made excellent use of that hypnotic tone and he gathered large crowds every night. He has also done radio, which means that his voice must be special....radio takes a certain quality of voice that you can not get anywhere else.... Michael has this quality. Just think.. "Phantom of the Opera" the movie starring the origional Phantom of the Opera..... Think of the number of people he alone would draw to movie screens just in Europe and the US. For he is extremly popualr in the Us as well, as can be told by his number of sell out performances...... Please Vote Michael as THE PHANTOM...... Johnny |

MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS IN MY OPINION THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT , THIS WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE TO BE IN BECAUSE OF HIS MUSIC AND HIS VOICE. IF MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS NOT PLAYING THE LEAD ROLE IN THE MOVIE I WONT SPEND A DIME ON IT. |

Ask almost anyone who they think of when they think of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and one of two people are usually immediately thought of... Andrew Lloyd Webber, or Michael Crawford. Without either of these phenoms, the Phantom would not be the EVENT that it is today. Michael IS the Phantom...Andrew is his creator...at the end of the day, to make a good Phantom film, it's going to have to be all or nothing. I want it all. I want Michael's Phantom on the screen! Good luck to him and to Warner Bros. Without MC, the show won't hold any staying power, much like the recent Les Mis flop at the box office. Don't get me wrong...I liked it, but it just couldn't hold the track. Long live the ORIGINAL ALW PHANTOM. |

Being an actress myself, I always look for emotion, energy, and communication with the audience, and Michael Crawford has all of these qualities. I strongly urge Warner Brothers to reconsider having Michael Crawford in the role of Phantom because it was the emotion that he put into the character that made the musical so successful. |

Everyone knows his talents and knows what he deserves. Anyone that has seen him knows that he is "THE PHANTOM", and there can be no other. Forget John Travolta and Antonio Banderas. I would like to say this, If Michael Crawford does not receive the part of the "Phantom", I will not waste my money. I will also tell my friends and family not to waste their money. Between all of us "TRUE PHANTOM PHANS" Your movie will not make a penny. If you are smart, you will cast Michael. I feel quite sure that if you donot cast Michael Crawford, at every theater around the country, you will have picketers. |

Warner Bros doesn't need to put a hunk like Antonio Banderas in the film. They should read the book. Antonio's good looks would be wasted on the film since Eric is disfigured since birth. And while he may have a great voice, it won't match Michael's. And as your web page says, it will be similar to Yul Brynner playing the King and I. I was fortunate to see him on Broadway before he passed away. He played the role with such a passion that no other actor can match. |

He is the original, and no other great actor can take that away from him. There is no Phantom without Michael - and his voice and artistic abilities qualify him as the best and only choice always. I hope Hollywood listens to the voice of the people. I love Michael! We all love him! (and this is coming from a younger audience- I'm only 29) |
| Name: Sherry Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Kansas City Time: 1998-06-17 23:15:00 Comments: Okay, Warner Brothers and RUG, you have three choices: a phantom with a ridiculous dimple (Travolta), a phantom with a thick Spanish accent (Banderas), or a phantom with a beautiful singing voice (Crawford). Why is this a difficult choice to make? Wake up, Hollywood, and learn from your many past mistakes concerning movie musicals. The role of the Phantom belongs to Michael Crawford. He earned it the hard way by originally creating the role and staying with it for more than 1,300 performances. I also seem to remember that Crawford won rave reviews from the tough theater critics, not to mention awards for his performance. If Hollywood wants to immortalize the Phantom of the Opera, then don't give us a cheap imitation to remember; give us the real thing--Michael Crawford. |

However, I refuse to keep silent about the proposed Phantom of the Opera movie. The rumored casting of Antonio Banderas has left me shaking my head in disbelief. I was hoping we were past the days of Hollywood using their latest starlet to sell a film, regardless of whether said starlet was suitable for the role. AB is NOT suited for the role of the Phantom. The entire plot of the show revolves around the fact that Erik, the phantom, has enchanted Christine with his voice. She calls him her "Angel of Music." There is only one performer I have seen with enough depth, maturity and passion, coupled with a voice that brings chills and tears with equal ease. That performer is MICHAEL CRAWFORD. He is NOT too old. Actually, he's just the right age for the role. Even now, he can truly bring Erik to life using nothing more than his voice and the grace of his movements across an empty stage. I hope and pray that the powers-that-be at WB come to their senses before they ruin yet another movie. It would be a travesty if the greatest performance in the history of theater were not, in some small way, preserved for future generations. Angel Angie |

Michael Crawford is, without a doubt, my favorite musician of all times. His unique voice and emotion-evoking performances are what helped make this musical so loved in the first place. It seems to me that people who are going to be paying to see this movie are those who are familiar with and enjoyed the musical. They will mostly be going for the music; not for the "hot Hollywood actor" of the times. As a 17 year old girl, one who, if anyone, would appreciate the "hotness" of actor Antonio Banderas, I can honestly say that, without a doubt, I would rather spend money on hearing Michael's voice than seeing Antonio's face. That is my opinion. Thanks again for all of your time and work. Good luck! |

I guess warner brothers doesn't really understand what they are dealing with here. This isn't a movie that they can just ruin. It is an idea, and a concept. If Antonio Banderas sung the role of Erik, he might pull it off after excessive vocal training and years of preparation. But he could never be the phantom. |

Since then I have had the great honor seeing EFX with Michael and his recent concert at MGM where I got the wonderful dream come true opportunity to meet him. He is such a great man who truly gives back to the community and is a role model for all ages. I would like nothing more than to see Michael cast as Phantom since it is of course HIS ROLE. He made the phantom and NO ONE can do it even nearly as wonderful. His voice, his movements..just watching him perform makes it obvious that he is the man for the part. I was shocked when I heard that Warner bros was interested in casting Travolta. This is an outrage! Although I beleive Madonna did a good job in Evita, I truly beleive that the film would have done better both among the academy members and the audiences worldwide, if a lesser known and mainly theater-based actor was used. Anyone who truly knows and understands the phantom |

Aucott Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Texas Time: 1998-06-15 12:53:26 Comments: Hello, I remenber going to two movies back in the 60's which had wonderful casts of important, well known film stars. I remember that each film also starred the same delightful young man whose charm and talent I was unable to forget. In each film I was so captivated, I could hardly wait for the film action to return to him. "The films were "Hello Dolly" and "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". The Young man was not part of the British Rock Invasion. If he had been, ( There was some resemblence to Peter "Hermen" Noome), he would have become an instant star. But Michael Crawford had chosen the High Road of show business, Musical Theater and Broadway. Therefore, inspite of a long and remarkable career, and overwhelming popularity in Great Britain and Australia, he is an icon in the U.S. mostly among theater lovers. And for us, he is the one and only "Phantom of the Opera". His Phantom electrified the wilting Broadway of 1988 and, very properly, he won the "Tony" that year. I rediscovered him myself when I watched the "Tonys" that night and heard that voice and experienced that most compelling of characters which Michael Crawford had created. I have been a dedicated fan ever since and like his many thousands of devoted fans, I have been looking forward to his recreation of Erik, the Phantom, in the film version of the musical. I can therefore be counted among the horrified fans who have seen the names of other, far less talented actors mentioned in connection with the role. I realize this is all part of the on going Hollywood Game, but I have to go on record saying, not casting Michael Crawford in the role he was born to play would be the greatest single mistake Hollywood has ever made. Michael Crawford is a genius. He is the greatest all around preformer of this or any other century. To not record the magnificense of his portrayal on film for posterity, would be a great tragedy indeed. Sincerely, Audrey Aucott |

I fell in love with the musical and especially Michael Crawford's voice. He is VERY talented, has a broad range, and knows how to convey emotion into his voice extremely well. You don't have to SEE him, to tell what emotions he's feeling.. to hear his anger, his love, his tears. Who cares that Michael Crawford isn't a big hollywood name. He's a big name in the phantom of the opera world. You won't be able to tell what he looks like under the makeup so who cares if he's not some well-known actor? I heard anywhere from John Travota to Antonio Banderes being considered as the Phantom. Yeah, they are both good actors and Antonio is especially pleasing to look at, HOWEVER unless they hire a completely disfigured person, we won't see what they really look like so who cares :) Looks are not everything and neither is a name.. Go with the man who made the phantom who he is! Michael Crawford is the only choice. |
