Comments: We all know that life is never perfect, but occasionally there is a sublime moment that brings us very close to perfection. At those times, we wish we could grasp the moment and hold onto it forever. Andrew, you created something that has given multitudes of people moments like that, and Michael Crawford helped you do it. Your collaboration on "Phantom of the Opera" touched more people in a more personal way than I believe you realize. Your music and Michael's performance left audiences speechless and in tears, moved beyond oral expression to a purely emotional response. Now you, Andrew and Warner Bros., have the opportunity and, in fact, the privilege of being able to capture one of those fleeting moments of near perfection on film so that the whole world will have the opportunity to share the awesome experience that only theatergoers have known so far. But please remember as you prepare to make this film that the public doesn't want a "new" or "different" Phantom. Of course film is a distinct medium, but please be as faithful to the original play and score as you can possibly be. There can also be no question that Michael Crawford should play the title role. His contributions to the "Phantom" mystique are as important as any of its other elements. His is the performance the public has been eagerly awaiting for 13 years, and the only one that guarantees this film the chance to go beyond mere success into the realm of phenomenon like the stage production. Don't risk a masterpiece by placing it in incompetent hands. We deeply want this film to be made, but we want it to be as wonderful as we know it can be. Better no film at all than a second-rate production. Give your public the real show and the real star, and we will reward you beyond your wildest imagination!

Comments: Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, when you first started working on The Phantom of The Opera you said you wanted it to be your "South Pacific". That is to say, your masterpiece. You achieved that, sir. It is a masterpiece. It is -your- masterpiece... you composed beautiful music, you were faithful to many aspects of Leroux's fantastic story... but most of all, you chose the right people. You chose Michael Crawford to be your Erik. It was, like George Perry said, "a brilliant casting coup". After all, you chose a man whose performance became one of the most acclaimed, celebrated and awarded performances of theatre history... you were strong enough to stick to your choices and request that the original cast went to Broadway... to more awards... to more recognition... then Michael Crawford went to LA... and the rest is history... a star, an era, a character was born.

I live in Brazil, sir. In a country with no tradition in musical theatre at all. But people here know about the existence of The Phantom of The Opera, your masterpiece. Some only by reputation, some because they were lucky enough to be able to travel, like me, but, more than anything, because most of those people own a soundtrack... a CD that sold 12 million copies... the Original London Cast of your musical. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. So most of people here in Brazil relate your masterpiece to Michael Crawford, and sir, let me tell you, it's the first impression that stays... how many times friends of mine did not come to me to tell me how much they loved his performance, and that by comparison the other Phantoms were weak... I saw your masterpiece 4 times, sir, and NONE of them compared to the powerful and unforgettable performance of Michael Crawford.

And now, sir, you want to transform The Phantom of The Opera in a movie. Brazil is a great movie audience... I was thrilled with the idea, so were my friends... the play I loved so much, that touched my life so deeply, accessible to so many people who weren't lucky enough to see it on stage... the chance to finally -see- what they all -heard- for so long! And then... the disappointment, the frustration, the anger... you want to cast Antonio Banderas. A man who can't sing, a man who's not acquainted with the role... because his name means money, because his name sells, maybe because he's "more famous"... I don't know... but sir, this is not right... you have in your hands the chance to make art and history again! Michael Crawford is there, right before your eyes... a choice that all relate to the role, that doesn't need dubbing or music changes, that has touched so many lives with his performance and that now has the chance to become a movie legend. We have a saying here in Brazil... "you don't change players in a team that's winning". Michael Crawfordis a choice that guarantees success... Antonio Banderas is a risky and sad choice... sad because it could be a failure. A failure because I know many people won't see it because they -know- Antonio Banderas does not belong in this history... and that, sir, would be sad... to watch your masterpiece perish in hands that can't handle its power, the responsibility.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, your casting Michael Crawford to be your original Phantom was a surprise. But it worked. You were right. You were wise. You were perfect. How can you risk to be remembered for ruining your own work? Casting Antonio Banderas is wrong, sir, and I hope is not too late to open your eyes.

It's the audience that saw your play, that bought your 12 million CDs, that gave you all the money and recognition, that asks for that.

You can't go wrong with Michael Crawford. You knew it then... you should know it now.

Humbly,

Claudia Hemsi

The man is arrogant and IS NOT respective of Michael Crawford fans. Deleting old music and adding new music is not the way to keep Phantom phans. Comments: I am so bummed. After catching up with the web site's recent news, and especially the USA TODAY article with Mr. Banderas clucking about being cast as Erik in the POTO movie, I also feel grief. What could become a major motion picture classic, and if Mr. B. is correct in his assumption, could easily cross that fine line called the "arts" and become a major embarrassment for those greedy Hollywood Boys. Mr. Crawford is the Phantom, Mr. Banderas can be anyone else he wants to be! Why not Raoul, the cute one??? I'm sure the studio will give you top billing, as B does come before C. Oy. This is a no-brainer. Antonio, dahling, you will never see the "white smoke" coming from the chimney of this campaign, ever. And to my brothers and sisters in this campaign, just remember, "that which doth not kill us, will make us stronger" :)

Comments: I just finished reading the recent news and am totally aghast!! I can't believe ALW is selling out for the latest flavor (or hunk) of the month. Please Mr. Lloyd Webber do not change one bit of your musical. If Mr. Banderas cannot sing the music as originally written he should not be given the part at all. I saw your 50th Birthday Celebration and Mr. Banderas definitely cannot sing the "Phantom" compositions. I also have waited for years to see the movie of "Phantom of the Opera" with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in their wonderful roles preserved for eternity. One hope remains in that Mr. Banderas admits that he does not yet have a definite contract to appear in the movie. Please give the fans of this musical what we all fell in love with----the original stars in an unaltered version of your masterpiece!!

Comments: *WARNER BROS.* If Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kapur are truly currently reworking the script and music from “The Phantom of the Opera” musical as a movie vehicle for Antonio Banderas I would like to make my personal intentions clear. You have a problem. If you have taken note the address to this web site is www.phantommovie.com. Does this worry you people? It should, because with this address will come many, many more visitors after this film is released than ever came before. People interested in the movie will read the history here and it is going to raise some eyebrows. Recorded here are all the feelings; hurt, anger, frustration, disbelief, betrayal and so much more. If you do accept this package that Lord Lloyd-Webber is rumored to be working on, the minute you sign Banderas the press will be back to this web site for quotes and info. We have made many media contacts throughout the course of this campaign who will want our opinion and we will not be hesitating in voicing it. In addition to this, the media members who have stayed politically correct before the fact are going to have a field day at this web site finding quotes to use to beat up on your movie and Banderas if it and he are not up to par. Has it escaped your notice that already the media is bringing up Michael Crawford in recent Banderas interviews? It has already started and he is going to continue to be asked these questions. I personally believe that if you use Antonio Banderas he is going to be widely criticized. The accent that he is not mentioning in recent interviews is going to get widely discussed. Many will not get past it and he will be unable to enunciate much of the lyrics properly. If Webber removes the difficult songs to aid Banderas the critics will tear him, Kapur and Banderas apart. Banderas can sing, but he is not by any stretch of the imagination at any level where he should be attempting Phantom and certainly not “Music of the Night.” His voice will be compared to Michael Crawford’s and all of you are setting this man up for some serious criticism and scrutiny from fans, critics and the media. He seems pretty sure of himself, but no amount of ego will sell him on something that he does not have. None of this will make me happy or bring me personal satisfaction. All I wanted from the day I started my first personal web page was the movie I was promised in 1990. I waited patiently for eight long years. I wanted my friends, family and everyone else to experience the play and the actor that I experienced. When I walked into the Ahmanson in 1989 I had absolutely no idea who Michael Crawford was. By the time I left the theatre that day I learned for the first time what it was like to be overwhelmed by an actor’s performance. It is that performance that won a myriad of awards including a Tony and it is that performance that was promised to all of us and to me for years. If you do make this picture with Banderas I *will* grieve for what we all will have lost. But this campaign's history will stay in place for all to see. You have trouble coming. People do have voices, we have proven it and we are going to continue to use every avenue available to let everyone know how fans felt. I personally will tell every human being I can reach that any Phantom film with Antonio Banderas portraying the Phantom is an unacceptable imitation and a mockery of the play and performance I love. Please think everything through carefully before you put this possible package into production. There is a reason that people went to these lengths to fight this hard for something they believe in. Maybe you should explore this thoroughly before making any decisions.

Comments: I said it before and I'll say it again: Banderas can't hold a candle to the musical genius of Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom!! So why then, Andrew Lloyd Webber, are you even considering putting Banderas in the role that not only is he unqualified for and underserving of, but that will prevent you from making this movie musical into the masterpiece it should be??!! Why are you determined to sacrifice the artistic integrity of your work for the sake of money and a Hollywood name??!! I just don't understand why you're doing this, and it really upsets me! PLEASE reconsider and cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom in this film, and for God sakes, PLEASE don't alter the musical to suit the needs of Hollywood or Banderas!! Keep your musical masterpiece intact and give the mask back to Michael! With Michael Crawford as the Phantom, this film could be a blockbuster, but with Banderas as the Phantom, it'll just be a blockbuster bomb! The role IS the man, and the man is Michael Crawford!!

The way he portrayed Eric was without a doubt extremely sensual. I really cannot get my head around this, it is driving me nuts. For crying out loud it should be obvious to them, that they cannot possibly find anyone else who could give this performance what Micheal crawford gave to it. Michael crawford is one of the most wonderful and talented actors of our time. I swear if this movie is made without Michael crawford, i will stand outside the cinema, and pay people not to go in there. I just can't bear it. what else can i say, except PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't let this awful thing happen it would be one of the greatest tragedies of our time. WE MUST NOT GIVE UP. Loree

Comments: It sickens me to think that ALW would allow anyone except for Michael Crawford to play the role of the Phantom in the movie. ALW was a man we had trusted all these years! Trusted to control his own creations and be sure that they were not turned into anything that would degrade the characters themselves!! Now there is talk that the MUSIC is changing, the characters are changing, and the man behind the mask will not be the one the fans want? Where is the trust now? How can ALW sleep nights knowing that he has disappointed millions of fans that have supported him for so long? Granted, I am but one man...but my heart binds me to things which I can not let go. And, Michael as the Phantom is one of these things. I was not able to see him play the Phantom on stage, many people were never given that opportunity. But now they could have that chance! You have the opportunity to let everyone who has come to know him as the Phantom from the recording come to know him on the silver screen. Don't let is down. Don't sell us out for a "superstar" like Mr. Banderas. Sure, his presence in a movie might sell (although it didn't work for 13th warrior, did it?), however it doesn't make it right. And, I guarantee that if you cast Michael Crawford as the character HE created, you will see that it will sell...and sell BIG! Don't let us down...or you will be sorry. No, that's not a threat...it's a promise. A promise that POTO will fail if you don't give its BIGGEST fans what they want. Original characters, original music, original story...and no Hollywood influences...we have enough of those all ready. It's about time for something REAL, not Hollywood glamorized. Please, Andrew...don't lose sight of yourself and what you stood for years ago. Stand up for what you know is right. Give Michael the part that God made him for. Give the fans the movie that they want, with the original songs they have come to know and love. Be a man...stand up to Hollywood when no one else does. Only then can you say that you, too, are a Superstar.

Comments: Well...THIS is a fine kettle of fish! Of COURSE Mr. Webber is backing this fallacy. You DON'T change or rewrite a classic to suit you and your needs. Romeo and Juliet did die. Old Yeller did get rabies and was shot. Bambi's mom caught a bullet and Rhett Butler DID tell Scarlet he didn't give a damn! There are as many examples of this as there are people who can think. We ALL have stories whose ending we would change...both in real life and in the world of books. As much as I respect the theater I respect even more the written word. I may not like the story. I may not agree with it. I will, however, fight for anyone's right to create it, put it to paper and print it! NO ONE has a right to change the printed word. Doing so is like stealing a thought or idea. What he (Mr.Webber) is backing and what he is doing are morally and ethically wrong! We might as well "edit" everything then...become like other countries who choose to overlook the ugly underbelly of where they live. We all know what Mr. Webber is. That was determined long ago...as the old saying goes, "we KNOW what you are...we are just haggling over your price!" He is backing this because it is the only POSSIBLE way he could begin to have any validation for what he is planning. The Phantom of the Opera is a classic. Forget for a moment about Mr. Crawford. Webber is DEFACING a piece of classic literature! He is doing it for money. He needs (in his mind) a hot little body, a young body, a face (can't have the mask too ugly or too large 'cause we have to DEPEND on the face to be the draw...TALENT certainly isn't). It appears Mr. Banderas is the direction he is looking...But people, if Antonio Banderas were as popular/hot/needed as HE thinks he is...then Hollywood would build a shrine! He is an actor and that is ALL he is. Everyone is on the "who is the best of the century" kick...Mr. Banderas wouldn't be in the top...what...25/30%? 40/50%? Each and every day sees new talent...new, flash in the pan, shooting stars. They come and they go. HE is great in his own mind. Webber has been part of the theater for so long his Lordship has truly gone to his head. So he has a title...so do a LOT of Brits! And they have talent, grace and class...and enough sense not to rewrite a classic. It is a heinous thought. Base and corrupt. I grew up with the musicals of Andrew Webber. I have laughed, cried and sang many of his beautiful, heart touching music. How would he feel if someone came along and decided to change it, make it better...heavy metal? Twisted Sister or Megadeath sing Andrew Lloyd Webber...the way Webber REALLY intended it to be done!? Now THAT would be a desecration wouldn't it? Truly a rape of a classic. Too bad Mr. Webber cannot see HE is doing the same thing...

Comments: ...all this talk by Antonio of "changes" and "artistic liberties" only PROVES that he is unfit to wear the Phantom's mask. If he were the right actor for the job, they wouldn't have to change the (admittedly) difficult music. While I've thought that the libretto is a little sophmoric at points, for the most part, the complexity and color of the music itself doesn't need to be changed. This only means that the powers-that-be don't want to embarrass Mr. Banderas by making him bite off more than he can chew...they are lowering the bar that was established by Michael Crawford, so that Antonio won't lose face. Guess what...he's already lost it. If he were HALF the singer that he believes himself to be, they wouldn't have to make these changes to spare him the humiliation of being compared unfavorably to Michael Crawford. He's already lost the comparison in singing, and he's very quickly loosing it in the class department. In his own language, he has most definitely not proven himself to be a caballero, or gentleman, because if he really were a gentleman, he never would have forced himself into this role in the first place. Apparantly, self awareness of his capabilities is not his strong suit. While I can only admire his belief in himself, I will never accept him as the Phantom, Michael Crawford's rightful role.

In order to preserve the Phantom spirit, no other than Michael can play the role. He is the ONLY one to play the role because his portrayel of the phantom made such an impact on so many of us that we would find it impossible to embrace anyone else in his place!! Comments: Well, I'm signing this because I am aware as to how worthwhile this cause is. I'm almost 20 years old & I'm in love with everything Phantom of the Opera. I have seen it numerous times & I find it appalling that YOU, Warner Brothers & Andrew Lloyd Webber, would even consider insulting my intelligence, along with the millions of people that make up the movie going audience, by thinking that because you make the movie and put an actor with a "big name" in it, that we would settle for anything less than perfection in the role. Michael Crawford created and shaped this wonderful role. He performs this role with emotion and is simply amazing in it. Every man that has since preformed this role is measured to what he did with it. I can promise you that I will not see the movie in any shape or form unless Michael Crawford is in the movie as The Phantom of the Opera. And I will appeal to everyone I know and everyone that I don't know to do the same. It is that simple. The choice is obvious. If Michael Crawford is in the movie it is a guaranteed blockbuster, if he is not, then it will be a disaster beyond your imagination!!! Play it safe, play it smart. Michael Crawford is the only choice. Thank you.

Comments: I just got the email regarding the Miami Herald interview Antonio Banderas gave for Oct. 17th and I am absolutely undone! For Mr. Banderas to state that he's going to do the Phantom movie regardless of what M.C.'s fans think and then - in the same breath - say that he respects us is absolutely ludicrous. It's very obvious that Mr. Banderas wants what he wants and does not respect anyone else...not the Phans and CERTAINLY NOT Michael!! My heart is broken. I will never see the film if Banderas plays Erik. I mourn for Michael and I mourn for us, the loyal Phans. How can ALW even consider rewriting such a masterpiece to fit the meager talents of someone so obviously miscast?! Is this the "dumbing down" of our beloved Phantom?

Comments: a suggestion....if I may. I have heard that Antonio Banderas is going to play the part of Phantom. Now, I think Antonio is a very fine actor and singer. (If you've ever seen the film version of Evita, then you know that the real star of the movie is Antonio. And not, Madonna.) But, when we are discussing who should play the role of Phantom. In a movie or in a play. Then, I'm sorry, but it must be Michael Crawford. He is indeed synonymous with Phantom. Even those who don't know the whole story, know Michael. And know his voice. And, if Michael is cast in the role of Phantom. I have already thought of a way to still utilize Antonio's talent. The role of Raoul is open. Which, in itself, is a very fine role. Hey, who ends with girl? Another thing that Antonio is quite good at.

If it is going to be made, for heaven sakes at least have the decency to find real musiciains and not Banderas. Hes an actor, and a decent one but I have heard rumors he will be our Erik! I think not! Not my Erik! I and many people I know have refused to see Banderas in this role, in theatres or on video. Comments: Years ago (I was 14), when I first bought the recording of Phantom of the Opera, I did so on a whim. I was told it was a wonderful musical, so I went out and bought it. I enjoyed the beginning, but it wasn't until the Phantom sung his very first note that I was hooked. This man had the perfect voice for the Phantom. I could hear every emotion wrenched from his soul and I cried with him, got angry with him, and completely lost my heart to him. Nearly 9 1/2 years later, I am still in love with Michael Crawford's Phantom. I daresay this experience has happened to others. That ethereal voice has the capability to completely enchant you, to pull you along with it, and there are many that have felt that pull. Unfortunately, many of us have also never had the chance to see this remarkable performance live (myself included) and have been dying at the chance to see him in the movie. The part was offered to him years ago, so why they are considering another actor, and one who isn't a singer, is completely beyond me. Michael Crawford has the voice of the Angel of Music, he *is* the Angel of Music. When he puts on that costume and make-up, he isn't just a man portraying the Phantom, he *becomes* the Phantom, to the very core of his being. He is absolutely extraordinary, even in the small clips I have seen and the very early Music of the Night video left me breathless. It is for all of these reasons that Michael Crawford has to be the Phantom in the movie. As the slogan goes, "The Role IS the Man"...

Comments: I hope I am writing to the correct person. If not, I would appreciate your passing this note forward to the appropriate person, because I feel what strongly about this topic. It is said that it is a wise man who knows his limitations and that being true Mr. Banderas requires some self reflection. As a long time Andrew Lloyd Webber AND Phantom of the Opera fan I am appalled at the implication that the anemic, stalking, almost caricature performance of Mr. Banderas' at the the 50th Birthday self promotion would appease, let alone please, even the most casual theatre or movie observer. Having long been aware of the masterpiece of creation that marked Michael Crawford's emergence from British comedy and slapstick to a once in a lifetime protrayal of what should have been a hated and despised character, but is instead is a benchmark of romantic tragedy, I wonder how Hollywood is going to explain this dreadful choice of "hot actor" over the possibility of cinematic treasure. Mr. Banderas stands to do more than offend Michael Crawford's dissappointed fans--he needs to prepare himself for the company of overly optimistic, miscast, superstars who turned thriving and beloved theatre productions into laboring messes on the screen. Better to let the legend lie than try to rework it to Mr. Banderas' talents. I am saddened at the thought.

Comments: I was never fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford play the Phantom on stage, I've therefore been looking forward to the film version. Now I find that Antonio Banderas is the favourite to play the part and I can't tell you how disappointed I feel. I want to see the performance that won so many awards and rave reviews, the performance I've listened to on the Original Cast Album. I've never heard anybody sing the Phantom music as well as Michael, and as far as I'm concerned, if Michael Crawford is not in the film I, for one, will NEVER watch it. I've also stopped buying Andrew Lloyd Webber CDs/videos and watching Antonio Banderas films (I used to be a fan of both), but they no longer give me any enjoyment, only remind me of my disappointment. Michael Crawford's performance should be preserved on film for those of us who didn't get the chance to see it on stage and for future generations to enjoy.

Comments: "But his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound. In that night there was music in my mind. And through music my soul began to soar. And I heard as I never heard before." I feel that these lyrics from Phantom accurately describe my emotions from when I heard the soundtrack for the first time. For the past eight years of my life, I have had the privilege of hearing Michael Crawford's voice depict both the Phantom's agony and ecstasy over his Christine. Not to be able to see Crawford in his signature role would be a grievous error on Webber's part and a slap in the face to everyone who loves the Phantom and Crawford. I sign this guestbook in the hope that someday I will be able to finally visually experience Crawford's interpretation of the Phantom. BMR

I HAD THE ENORMOUS PLEASURE TO ATTEND THE OPERA WITH MY TWO DAUGHTERS WHO ARE AVID PHANTOM FANS, AND THE OPERA STRUCK ME VERY DEEP, I WAS VERY EMOTIONAL AND MOVED WHEN I LEFT THE THEATRE. THIS IS BECAUSE MR CRAWFORD HAS THE UNIQUE AND MAGICAL CHARISMA THAT NO OTHER PERFORMER HAS OBTAIN DURING THE HISTORY OF THE OPERA. IT WOULD BE AN INJUSTICE TO THOSE AVID PHANTOM GOERS WHOM APRRECIATE A RELIQUE.

Comments: The whole idea of Antonio Banderas in the title role of The Phantom of The Opera is ludicrous. His performance during the Andrew Lloyd Webber 50th birthday celebration at the Royal Albert Hall only further convinced me that he is NOT right for the role. His voice lacks depth, emotion, power, and his movements and acting appeared wooden and confused-not exactly a good portrayal of the "Angel of Music" or Christine's teacher. Michael Crawford should be the only one considered for the role. He is able to bring the Phantom to life even when not in costume. His haunting voice, expressive movements and magnetism captivated millions of Phantom fans and continues to do so today. It would be sacrilegious to compare a performance like Banderas' to one of Michael Crawford's. There is no comparison. Cast Michael Crawford, or sell out a beautiful and well-loved musical as well as a chance for a legendary performance.

Comments: I can think of some choice words in at least five languages, but since this is a family destination, I'll spare everyone's eyes. Having said that, first off...once again AB is tooting his own horn. (boy could I say something crude to go with that!) As usual it's his word and his alone that is saying this project is a go...the old if you can't impress them with true facts, baffle them with b-s. And if it is true...if they are changing songs and so on, then it's going to be just as bad as the film version of Evita (I can say that unequivocally, having seen the great Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin along with the rest of the original B-way cast...what a difference real acting and singing makes!). How stupid do they think we are??? Do they think we're going to take this garbage without a fight? Do they think we'll put up with our beloved show being diced and sliced by idiots that don't understand the heart and soul of the work? Do they think we'll let them get away with this? I say raise a big stink...if it goes the way they want it to go (down the hole) fine...we warned them. And when it bombs, we'll be there saying loud and proud "WE TOLD YOU NOT TO MESS WITH WHAT MADE IT A SUCCESS IN THE FIRST PLACE." What I don't understand is why on earth would they cast someone in the lead role who's singing can't even make the chorus of the stage production? WHY??? Why cast someone who doesn't understand what the role is about? Why cast someone who can't enunciate the essential elements of the score? Why cast someone who is SO WRONG for the part. They have their gold mine, their savior, their ANGEL right under their noses, under contract to the record division. What is wrong with those idiots??? I'm not taking this...I love this show, and Michael Crawford's performance too much to put up with this. I'm fighting this wannabe phantom tooth and nail until someone in the right place listens and understands that only Michael Crawford can and should play this role on film. We are talking about a special property that needs special handling and a special actor in the leading role. Besides...I don't think that AB's last film was all that much of a hit anyway. Can somebody please tell me the last movie that AB opened on his own that did a bazillion dollars the way they think Phantom will do with him in the lead? I don't think he's done any big box office on his own without another heavy hitter leading man/lady in the film. Antonio...fuerrate...leave this role to Michael Crawford.

Michael Crawford is one of the leading talents in the world today and without him in the film, it would probably become another piece of ho-hum hollywood fluff. Comments: The Phantom lives inside of Michael Crawford, consumes every part of him. His facial expressions become Erik's when he sings those songs, his body becomes an instrument of seduction and his voice reaches the innermost depths of the soul. His mode of expression has brought many to tears because of its beauty. There are many who could play the part but only Michael becomes it and that is something truly special. To rob those who have never seen Phantom of the opportunity to see it the way it was meant to be done is a heinous crime. I sincerely hope that you realize how many lives this story has touched and how many more could be captured by it if the right person plays the part. Think on it.

Comments: The Phantom was French, had a marvelous tenor voice, and was about 50 years old. In no way does Antonio Banderas meet this criteria. Don't get me wrong, I think he was wonderful as Che. But the Phantom is completely out of his range (literally). Michael Crawford has more than proved his ability to act and sing the Phantom role, he's been in movies before so he won't have problems adjusting to the different medium, and he has a big enough name that he should have no problems drawing an audience. The Phantom movie is going to be a big deal, especially among Phantom fans. They're going to want to see a name associated with the role, or at least a name associated with musical theatre. Antonio Banderas is a great actor, just not right for the Phantom role.

These people may have the ability to bring money into that box office and if that's all you care to consider, so be it, however it has nothing to do with real talent that either Madonna nor Antonio possess. Not to cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom is a HUGE MISTAKE. He is the Phantom and will always and forever be what the public wants to see as the Phantom. So it may seem I will have the wonderful memory of his performance on the Broadway Stage and never enjoy Phantom again.

His performance at Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th Birthday was awful! He lacks the voice and the passion to perform the Phantom. Michael Crawford on the other hand is the right age, has a beautiful voice, and possesses the rare ability to portray Erik to the fullest! Comments: Well, well well. Here I am again, trying once more to feel I am making a dent in the asinine choice of the powers that be. Phantom, Michael Crawford, and musical theatre are the relaxing, enjoyable, consistant things in my life. I thought no matter what's going to hell in my life, the government, this country, or the world, I could always go home and listen to Michael Crawford sing The Music of the Night to me. But lately, I've only been able to hear "It's over now, the music of the night." I am not pleased, to say the least, with the desisions of Lloyd Webber. A man we, the phans, have supported, and paid, and trusted, and respected to make the right choices, to appease the omnipotent value of music. But, the phans are dissapointed, and that's not good. After all, we learned from the best about what to do when we don't get our way...it's a good job there aren't any large light fixtures where Andrew sleeps...well, well, well. Maybe I'll look into that. All I know, is that my happiness has become a thing of frustration. I know it is likewise for other devout phans. My phriends, we will get our way. If we don't, it will be in the name of money. Andrew thinks that casting Antonio (gag me, please) will send more money to the box office, and happiness to moviegoers. Yeah, sure. I see that happening right after my cat speaks French to me. WHO'S GOING TO GO TO THIS MOVIE, ANYWAY? THE PHANS! THE PHANS WILL BE THE ONES TO MATTER! IF THEY ARE UPSET, THEY WILL NOT SEE THIS MOVIE! IF THEY DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE IT WILL BE A FLOP! REMEMBER JEEVES? JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR? NOW, IF LLOYD WEBBER COMES TO HIS SENSES AND COMPLIES TO THE PHANS, THIS MOVIE WILL NO DOUBT BE A HIT, AND HE MIGHT BE ALLOWED TO LIVE PAST THE PREMIRE! "SHOULD THESE DEMANDS BE IGNORED, A DISASTER BEYOND YOUR IMAGINATION WILL OCCUR!" I think that this is inevitable. Happy phans will equal $$$$$$$$. Unhappy phans may result in some very dark hours. Lord forbid that something happens to all the respect Phantom has had us build for Andrew Lloyd Webber! I am not the only one who feels this. Millions do. If that is doubted, take a look at the quotes of those who saw Mr. Crawford in action. Take a look at the records Michael Crawford's last week in Phantom made. Anyone remember the mad dash for tickets? Anyone remember why? Why? Why do we care? Why doesn't Warner Bros. have compassion? Why can I not listen to Phantom without bitter tears? Why do I find myself relating to the end of the first act, "You WILL curse the day you did not do...." ? Why does the end of the play leave me feeling that He is right. "IT'S OVER NOW, THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!" -KAT

Although, I have not seen Michael Crawford as the Phantom, I have heard him sing "music of the night" when he toured Australia, and for me it was one of the best performances I heard of that song. Comments: Michael Crawford has been very popular in Australia for years.

Here are just some examples of this -

1. Known to Aussie audiences since the days of Hello Dolly, his name became known in houselholds across the country in the '70's as the lovable Frank Spencer - to this day whenever this show is repeated it draws large TV audiences.

2.Which comes to the next comment, his Frank Spencer in the late '70's and into the '80's was the most impersonated character on Aussie variety shows.

3.Leading on to Phantom - the question Aussies ask when news of Phantom first reached our shores wasn't "Who is MC?" but rather "Is it the same MC of Some Mothers fame".

4.I attended Phantom in Oz numerous times over the seven and half years it was here, each time I overheard others in the audience say "if ony we could have seen the original - Michael Crawford"

5.When I tell people I'm a fan of MC, I've never had to say who he is - rather I get the reponse - hasn't he got a great voice.

6. An hour long interview he did with Ray Martin shown on prime time early evening TV became the most watched program on Aussie TV for 1993.

7.Ray Martin later did a special on ten "top blokes and superstars" from interviews which as well as MC, included such stars as Tom Cruise, Patrick Swazye, Sylvestor Stallone, Anthony Warlow (Aussie Phantom). MC was voted the most popular of the lot.

8. Michael's records have won awards here for number of sales from pre- orders alone before being released. His records always stay in the charts for months.

9.As to concerts, they are always sellouts (and with little publicilty) so the recent sell out concert is no suprise. Last year extra concerts were added on and concerts sold out within hours. Public demand was that great, in one city the one advertised concert was extend to four.

10. Thousands have turned out for the rare few record signings he has done in our country, which make the nightly news for the public turn outs.

So in answer to the question "Is Michael Crawford popular in Australia?"

It's definatley a big YES. We want to see him on the big screen as THE phantom.

With apologies for this long post.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the one and only performer who could ever convey the true essence of the Phantom. His very soul is in every song that he sings from this beloved story. As it says in the song, "I am the mask you wear - it's me they hear. I hear only Michael Crawford. Antonio Bandanderas is one hunk of a man, but he does not possess the vocal skills nor the true soul of the Phantom. The Phantom wears a mask, remember? There is only one Phantom and his name is Michael Crawford.

Comments: Mr. Crawford himself even said that he would consider the role in the movie if approached. I think that it won't be a great movie without his wonderful voice and qualities that made him the Phantom. I would definitely boycott if he didn't play the role.

Comments: I have been a huge Michael Crawford fan since seeing him as the original Phantom on Broadway. Having someone else in the role of the Phantom in the movie version would be a terrible injustice. No one could perform the role as eloquently as Michael Crawford. Please let the audiences see "Phantom of the Opera" as it was intended and in all its glory with Michael Crawford as the Phantom.

Comments: Michael Crawford should be the ONLY actor, playing the part of the Phantom, cast in a movie about the Phantom of the Opera. Thank you for this very informative web site.

Comments: I'm back from NY where the campaign had a table at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS on sunday. We raised over $900 to fight AIDS by selling candy with our campaign buttons attached. We also handed out fliers and had petitions for our campaign and I have to tell you those New Yorkers want Michael. We had people lining up to sign our petitions. People would walk by and say "I don't sign petitions" then see what it was and say "OH, I'll sign that". The general reaction of people was "Well of course, who else would be the Phantom" We also got a lot of "HOllywood's nuts". People were absolutely astounded that anyone else would even be considered. I told one woman they were talking about Antonio Banderas and she grabbed the petition out of my hand and said she wished she could sign it 20 times. She brought her friends back later so they could sign. We had Broadway cast memebers including some from POTO and a little boy who was in Les Miserables sign. We had men and women signing, we had teenagers who said they had heard so much about Michael Crawford's performance and were devastated to have missed it sign in the hopes they could finally get to see it. We had people from around the world including Germany, South Africa, Scotland, Singapore and Australia sign. I don't understand why Hollywood can't grasp the simple fact that the people know Michael Crawford is the phantom and they want Michael Crawford as the movie phantom and not a Hollywood star. None of my friends will go to the movie if they make it with anyone else because they know they will be getting cheated. Doesn't it dawn on Hollywood that this was such an incredible performance that people are still talking about it and willing to fight for it 10 years later. Doesn't that tell them anything.

Comments: I am a huge fan of Phantom of the Opera and I really want to see Michael Crawford play the role in which he made famous.I've heard the rumors that Antonio Banderas is going to play the Phantom. I love him but I definitely would not go see the movie with him in the role. He just doesn't have the voice for the part. So please Warner Brothers make us fans happy everyone I've talked to wants MIchael Crawford. Thank you

Comments: Having just discovered this site and organization, I want to voice my sincere and enthusiatic support for Michael Crawford as the only performer who should be cast in the title role of a film version of the Phantom of the Opera. I also would like to join the campaign and to receive any e-mail notices you send to your members. And of course I wish to add my own comments to any material that you send to Warner Brothers or Andrew Lloyd Webber. My suggestion to Warner Brothers is as follows: Like all other participants in this campaign, I am shocked that Warner Brothers would even consider casting anyone other than Michael Crawford in a role he created, and I will certainly not attend any showing of a film of The Phantom of the Opera that does not feature Mr. Crawford in a role that he has earned the right to immortalize on celluloid. Audiences, too, have a right to enjoy such a unique experience and to not be fobbed with second best--or worse. However I would like to propose a constructive, creative solution to the issue, one which I think should have occurred to someone at Warner Brothers by now. If the producers wish to cast someone like Antonio Banderas in the film, whether to enhance or to draw on his romantic movie star appeal they should cast him in the part of Raoul, which is after all the romantic role and one that is far more appropriate to his age and abilities: he is really too young to be convincing in the role of Eric, the phantom. As his fine singing at the recent Andrew Lloyd Webber concert showed, his voice, too, is more suited to the lyricism of Raoul's music, wherein his accent would also be less of an impediment than in the more intensely melodramatic role of the phantom. In short, this would be by far the better vehicle for a performer like Banderas, and it would allow Warner Brothers the maximum box office insurance by appealing to fans of both Mr. Banderas and Mr. Crawford. At the same time the studio would also gain prestige by giving Mr. Crawford the role he made famous and which he alone deserves. Therefore the most pragmatic would be the most ideal and everyone would benefit. This need not, indeed should not, become an "either-or" issue, but rather a "both-and" solution: both Michael Crawford and Antonio Banderas (or whoever is ultimately cast as Raoul) in the only casting arrangement that will guarantee a great and successful picture. Please listen to reason (and imagination!); otherwise the film may end up like so many recent musical films in which inept casting has led to box office duds. As a Ph.D. graduate in Theatre, I know how shortsighted casting of a production can ruin everything, and I also know how instrumental the casting of a performer of Michael Crawford's talent and experience is often the decisive factor in the success of a musical, as it definitely was in The Phantom of the Opera. This shown by the fact, attested to by Hal Prince, that every subsequent performer of this role onstage had to try to imitate Mr. Crawford's original interpretation as closely as possible. Audience's would not accept any departures. Warner Brothers has the opportunity to have the original, and have it forever, on film. Why settle for less--for another Michael Crawford imitator--when they can have the real thing?

Comments: I think it's terrible that ALW won't put Michael Crawford in the movie. When I saw Antonio Banderas sing at his birthday celebrations I was horrified!!! He can't sing to save his life. Does ALW want this movie to fail, because if the 'REAL' phantom isn't in it there will thousands who won't be going to see it, myself and my family and friends included. Come on Andrew, wake up and see that Michael is the right man for the job, after all he made the Phantom what it is today.

Comments: I can't help but think that discussing anyone else as the Phantom would have to be a joke. Michael Crawford created and shaped the role of the Phantom. Every other man who has played that role has to try to live up to the expectations that the audience has after hearing Crawford as the Phantom. It seems that Hollywood is out to make a buck yet again. But casting anyone other than Michael Crawford in this diverse and highly anticipated role would only be digging this just as highly anticipated movie a very deep grave. And it is simply because when one hears the title, "The Phantom of the Opera", one thinks the Phantom and when one thinks that it is only natural to think MICHAEL CRAWFORD. Wake up Hollywood. Think your audience. Think Michael Crawford. I wouldn't think of it any other way. And I wouldn't pay to see the movie any other way!!!

Comments: To Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros: I just want to post one more message begging you to start production on the Phantom of the Opera film. The audience for this movie has been building since 1986. Millions of people have seen the stage production all over the world and most of them want a permanent record of the show to have for their very own. They would flock to the film and buy the video, the soundtrack, and almost anything else associated with it. Untold riches await you when this film is released. The only thing that can cause it to fail is if the title character is played by an unqualified actor. That's why the Phantom must be Michael Crawford or no one. Michael Crawford's performance is legendary and it's the one the public wants to see. It's the best known Phantom interpretation of all due to the media frenzy it created, and also because of the mammoth sale of the cast recording and Michael's own record sales and his concert and TV appearances. Michael Crawford is the definitive Phantom and his is THE voice of the Phantom to millions. Again...Michael Crawford for Phantom or NO movie at all! Please get the film made soon and let the excitement begin!!

Comments: Mr. Crawford deserves the role of the Phantom. If they do not chose him, I will never watch a Warner Brothers movie ever again. It would be intresting if Jonathan Pryce played the role, but Micheal has my vote. Great website. This is coming from a 13 year old Phantom of the Opera fan. I have liked the phantom since I was five years old. Again, great website. P.S. I saw your ad in Vareity

Comments: Micheal Crawford has embodied the emotion, passion, and intensity in all of us. This is what makes his performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" such a thill to the millions who have seen his performances. Micheal is also a wonderful human being himself- there are many stories among fans and fellow performers of his good-nature and tireless energy. Having Micheal Crawford in a movie version of "Phantom" will not only guarantee its sucess, it will also expose a new generation to his marvelous ability and widen his popularity around the world to those who do not have easy access to the theatre. I know, because I have been one of those who have been blessed by his talent. I have been truly touched by his music. Please consider a "Phantom of the Opera" movie with the original Phantom, Micheal Crawford. Thank you.

Comments: How could a person want to hear anyone other than Michael Crawford sing the role of the Phantom? He is the most incredible singer I have ever heard play this part. I listen to him sing the music over and over again and everytime it sends chills down my spine. What passion and power.
