Comments: It is to be noted by all concerned that the 'Phantom' libretto is being played out in Lord Webby's real life. Notice as you go through the libretto how Phantom is betrayed after being the one who should be recognised. Compare how Raoul is his rival to that of Michael Crawford's rival, Antonio Banderas. Has Lord Webber forgotten -- all that the phantom asks???

Comments: Hi, My name is Katy Cutter. I agree with you and loved your article in the LA Times. I Think Michael Crawford should be the Phanatom in the Movie. I also hope he gives the lead to Sarah Brightman.
Antonio is too young of a kid for this role...hadn't the Phanatom haunted the theater for years???KT

Comments: Mr. Crawford was exceptional in the role of the Phantom, and I can not imagine any other actor playing this role in a film version of this classic, expecially Antonio Banderas. I believe that Mr. Crawford could bring a bigger draw to the box office as the star of this movie: many people who did not have the chance, or who could not afford the price of a broadway show, could now experience the music of the night. It would be a huge mistake in my opinion to have Banderas in this role - he took away from my enjoyment of the film version of Evita. Please let Mr. Crawford take on this role - a role that he has made such an enjoyable performance for millions around the world!

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber....has he gone mad? Michael Crawford is a genius. It has been said several times that the only one that would make the role of the Phantom work was indeed Michael Crawford. His voice is the only I know of that is so hypnotic to portray realistically the emotion-the flesh and blood Erik, that any one but Mr. Crawford would callously butcher without mercy-I just don't believe that any one would want to cast aside this incredibly gifted man from the role he was so obviously born to play (well, that and Frank Spencer). I fear that this movie will do very poorly if it has not the original cast. The phans are despairing! Andrew Lloyd Webber has the power of casting, and he neglects to consider the ones that will really make this film count. We, the phans, will be the ones that will bring triumph to this film. Look what we did for the musical in it's theatrical form! Andrew, "I advise you to comply, my intstructions should be clear; remember there are worse things than a shattered chandelier!" That is all for now, though I have much to say. Much, which I can hopefully voice in a more aesthetically pleasing way than violence toward certain asinine people in charge of important choices. A book or movie perhaps...."Phor the Phans"... -Kat

Comments: All I can say on this matter is that if they did not cast Michael Crawford as Erik, they would be ruining the musical. He is the *only* one who could possibly play the role with such fervor and passion as displayed in the original London version of the musical. He *is* the true Phantom, and no one shall convince me otherwise.

Comments: We read our Bergen Record newspaper yesterday and learned about the phantom movie website. Thank you one and all for having this website. We want to vote for having Michael Crawford be the Phantom (the only real Phantom!!) in the movie. His interpretation of this role is beyond what any other person can imagine. He created the mystique about the Phantom. The sold-out theatres around the world definitely prove that he must be the movie Phantom. Please include our 2 votes and prayers that A.L.W. will reconsider. Surely anyone can close his/her eyes and hear the difference of Michael Crawford's voice and Antonio Banderas' voice. Antonio is a fantastic actor - The Mask of Zorro surely was one of his many successes. But the world heard him sing a song from the Phantom at A.L.W.'s birthday salute, and clearly, Antonio Banderas is NOT the Phantom. Thank you for this website and this mission! Comments: I first met the Phantom when I was 13. It wasn't Micael Crawford, but Brad Little. Afterwards me and my phantom obsessed handbell group couldn't stop singing. Later I bought the Origional London Cast Recording w/ MC and SB. From that day to now there has not been one day when I haven't listened to it. Michael is one of the greatest, no, the greatest Phantom that has ever sung. When I first heard about a Phantom movie, I thought, "not a bad Idea. I would really like to see Crawford in this role." Then I read about Antiono or Travolta in the role. I mean I have nothing against Antiono or John, but come on! No one but Michael can bring that phantomness to the Phantom. NO ONE! Of anyone person in the world Michael is the only logical choice. If movie makers cast anyone besides Michael, it will be their darkest hour.

Comments: "Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is the face in the mask?" Christine, let's hope it's Crawford!!!

Angel of Music, guide, and guardian, please be Michael Crawford!
I am only 14, and have seen Phantom only once, three days ago. I saw it with the very handsome, talented, and expressive Hugh Panaro. But everyone who is a fan (myself included) has the Original Cast Recording (OCR) and Crawford lights up the house with his voice! The OCR is what we fans want to hear when we go to the theater. And you can only get that quality with Crawford! Antonio Banderas?! That is actually a SCARY thought!

I AM the movie generation. My friends and I go out and see movies all the time. Doesn't WB want us to see Phantom? I do believe they want profits. But, without Crawford, I won't be recommending. Even if a current Phantom actor is put on the screen, it won't be the same. If you keep the story (which you MUST!) then you have to keep the legend. Crawford is the legend. Age doesn't matter. If it does, good-bye to Tom Hanks, my personal favorite movie actor. Good bye Jack Nicholson, good-bye Hollywood! So if age is your arguement, than all is lost for the movie world. I swear none of my friends will see it. Nor will my best friend in another town, being in love with the play, and Crawford. If it isn't Crawford, it isn't Phantom.

Broadway, LA, and all the other big theaters, will laugh in your face as people flock to the play to see REAL, quality actors imitating Crawford's fabulous acting. No Crawford? No problem. But don't expect to see anyone in the theaters. So please. Think before you act. Or the only thing you will hear outside your WB offices is the famous line of the Phantom, sung by Phantom himself. The sweet music will be over. There will be no fans. And so, be prepared to hear:
"It's over now, the music of the night." ~Lauren~

Comments: I have had the pleasure of seeing "Phantom of the Opera" twice in my life (so far!). Once in London and once in San Francisco. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom. However, I did catch him on PBS's "An evening with Michael Crawford". I must say, even without the costumes and sets, just the passion he put forth when he performed Phantom songs sent chills all over my body. I was truly stunned. His voice, his passion in the role, as well as the number of performances in which he's honed it to perfection, make him the ONLY one truly qualified to convey this characters poor tortured soul. Phantom IS Michael Crawford. Michael Crawford IS Phantom. Anyone else in that role would be a joke as well as a waste of celluloid. And I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that Antonio Banderas is being considered for the role. One question: Are you insane?? Michael Crawfords performance will go down in HISTORY. He will ALWAYS be remembered. You mention Antonio Whats-his-name 10 years from now and everyone will say, "Who?" Look at how many people have visited this web site. That's a portion of how many people are NOT going to attend the movie if Michael's not in it. Your setting yourselves up for a colossal bomb. The people who would go to see Phantom on the big screen are the same people who have seen it in the theatre. We know who Mr. Crawford is. You can't feed us tofu and tell us it's chocolate. Don't make this mistake. There is only one Phantom. Michael Crawford.

Comments: I have seen the Phantom on stage twice, unfortunately not with Michael, but have listened to him over and over on the sound track CD, and when it wears out I will purchase another. I have seen Michael perform and captivate the audience on stage in Tampa. He was made for the part of the Phantom, just as Clayton Moore was for the Lone Ranger, whom the world also loved. Michael made the Phantom a success on stage for ALW and would do nothing less for the Movie. Antonio is no Phantom nor will he ever be.

Comments: ILove Phantom of the Opera & have seen it 3 times on Broadway. Unfortunately never with Michael Crawford, but I adore him & he is the only TRUE phantom in my eyes. It would be an artistic sin if they do not cast him in the role as the Phantom. As for Antonio Bandaras playing the lead, that would be the ultimate sin & a flop, did you hear him in Evita, I had to turn off the CD. I hope our influence as "the audience" has some persuasion over Hollywood in casting him. After all, we pay their salaries by viewing the movies, don't we? Without us the show mustn't go on.

Comments: Read an article in the San Jose Mercury News dated July 11, 1999. Using Diane Flogerzis Web site we would like to voice our opinion too. We have seen Phantom in London, L.A. and San Francisco. We've seen Robert Gullioume, Davis Gaines, Michael D'Ambrosio, forgive if the spelling is not correct. Back in 1990, we heard that Michael Crawford was to perform a few short months at The Ahmanson in Los Angeles. We'll we rushed to get the first available tickets for a wednesday evening performance. Fantastic seats!!!! Anyway, hopped on a plane after work in San Fransico about 6:00-6:30. Arrived in LAX 7:35, rented a car, drove to the Ahmanson, had dinner saw the most incredible performance in our lives. We were so moved by the sensual and flawless performance we can't even imagine anyone else in the role. We just hope that all of the people involved in eventully making the Phantom think about all the other re-makes or theater to screen and some of the worst casting ever. The Avengers, terrible casting, what were they thinking? The Wild, Wild West, please, there are some things you just should not touch. The World has waited to see this on the big screen and the poor people who didn't have the opportunity to see him perform will get to in the movie. Do the right thing, cast Banderas in another role, I'm sure he wouldn't be dissappointed.

I would think Andrew Lloyd Weber would feel the same. Instead we are getting a pretty face instead of a talented actor and accomplished singer. My only regret was that Michael Crawford was no longer in the starring role. After becoming infatuated with the show, I discovered Michael. I saw what I was missing. I saw him on talk shows, bought his CDs and discovered what a treasure he is. I saw him perform "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" in Baltimore soon thereafter, and fell in love with him. He was witty, funny, intelligent and brilliant. His voice is magnificent, his presence overpowering. He is the greatest. Antonio is a fine man, but the "Phantom" role is one for Michael. Thank you.

Comments: I have been long awaiting the production of the Phantom movie. I have been in love with the Phantom of the Opera since it was released, and one of my fondest memories was when my parents flew me to LA to see it--with Michael Crawford and Steve Barton (he was a stand-in!) in it. I've been appalled at the men considered for the part, however. I mean, have we forgotten that this is a MUSICAL? I am, of course, partial to Michael Crawford. He definitely has a voice and has added something to the play that I have not seen in any of the other phantoms the 4 other times I've seen the play. He also has much experience with the big screen and is still capable of playing the role. I thought Antonio Banderas did well in Evita, and I enjoy seeing him in action movies. However, I am appalled that he is being considered for Phantom. I don't think his breathy, half-talking the songs can be pulled off in that show. Not to mention his singing on the ALW Birthday Celebration made me feel sick! Please don't take such a powerful musical with potential to revive musicals on the big screen and turn it into a disaster. Cast Michael Crawford.

Comments: *****************Dear Jayne, Antonio hasn't been cast yet, but with all the publicity he's been receiving for openly "going" for the role, one would sure think he has. According to WB however, no one has been actually "signed" as of yet. Thank you for your wonderful entry to the guest book. It is so apparent that the role IS the man, and the man IS Michael Crawford!************** I was appauled to hear that Antonio Bandaras has been cast as the Phantom. Whilst I believe this was done due to his huge box office lure after Zorro and also his brillant portrayal of Armand in Interview with a Vampire, does ALW and the bean counters in Warner Bros not realise that this part is not for him. I first saw POTO in November last year in N.Y and was blown away. Immediately I bought the original cast recording and have been totally mesmerized by Michael Crawfords' voice ever since. I don't think a day has gone by when I have not listened to it. The love I now have for POTO has led me to see it a further 6 times and I have surfed into countless sites on the Net trying to gleam further information. Perhaps ALW and Warner are under the mistaken impression that due to the delays in production Michael Crawford is now too old for the film audiences they hope to appeal to? If that is the case I would like to point out that I am only 25 and I'm sure like most female fans find him very attractive. Perhaps they think he would not be enough of a pull at the box office? If that is the case perhaps they should be reminded that when you think of POTO automatically you think of Michael. I would give anything, go anywhere for that matter, to see him play this role again on stage, to see him weave the magic. Somehow I doubt that I will be going to the cinema 7 times to see this sham of a movie. Warner Bros and the Really Useful Company would do well to remember who their audience is. This is not a Kevin Williamson script, does not need to be directed by the likes of Joel Shumacher in a Batman genre. This is a love story which I believe Cameron Mackintosh described once as "Hyper Romantic". Whilst I understand that the overall aim of both W.B and the RUG company is to make money, surely they realise that to do that is to give audiences what they want. After this long wait for the movie, could they not reward the loyal fans who have returned countless times to see that stage version. It would lead to the film being an even greater success, a classic. Yours, J.B.Ross

Comments: i cannot concieve of anyone other than michael crawford and sarah brightman starring in this movie. i am from a small community in upstate new york and did not have access to any performances of the play when these two were in it and have dreamed of being able to view their performances when i first heard of the movie. i am so disappointed that now i may never have the chance to realize that dream. i saw an interview with alw when he stated that the first time he heard mr. crawford singing, he said to a companion, "i have found my phantom." has he forgotten his first impression, which is the shared impression of fans of this musical the world over. the movie of hello, dolly lacked in my opinion by not affording people the chance to see carol channing reprise her starring role which would have probably given the movie a greater audience. i notice that alw brought back original cast members from cats for the film version. i must admit that i enjoyed antonio banderas' performance in evita, but i do not believe that he can bring as much to the phantom role as could m. crawford. as far as bringing in a hollywood name, do not feel this is neccessary-people who love the phantom will go to see THE PHANTOM, which is m.crawford. the play itself will draw fans, but ifeel only by having its original star present, and most fans will probably avoid the movie with anyone else in the lead role, choosing to sty home and play there cd's and imagine the movie that might have been. i hope that acion can be taken to ensure a movie that mrwebber and the fans alike can be proud of.!!

Comments: I'm so glad I was lead to your website and this wonderful campaign to bring Michael Crawford to the big screen. My family and I have seen Phantom several times in both London and New York and it is our favorite A.L. Webber production. To think of putting any other person in the movie role of this movie would be insane. To even consider A. Bandaras in the role is impossible. It makes you wonder if any of the movie people have even seen or HEARD Michael sing??? Obviously not! Michael IS "the Phantom" and it is because of his singing and original performance that this show was made a hit and brought so many people back again and again to see this wonderful production. I am really sorry that Andrew Lloyd Webber would even consider anyone else playing this part. Perhaps Mr. Webber needs to sit quietly by himself and listen to his music and words coming from his own heart - the voice he will hear will be Michaels! I don't think I would even consider going to any movie that showcases some hollywood star in the role. Several years ago this same thing happened to Ann Rice when Hollywood got ahold of her popular Vampire book and Tom Cruise was put in the main role. Tom Cruise was the complete opposite of the main character and many of the devoted fans of this movie revolted - it was a poor choice by producers to think that they could stick some Hollywood leading man into a part that was not suited for him, only to try and make money off it. Now the same is being considered for "Phantom". Mr. Webber needs to stick to his art and not sell his soul for the glitz and glitter of Hollywood! My vote is for Michael Crawford anytime - he IS and always will be "The Phantom".

Comments: Dear TMCPMC, I totally agree with you all, and I think this is a wonderful thing you are doing. I never got to see "Phantom of the Opera" with Michael Crawford playing the role of the Phantom. But I fell in love with "POTO" listening to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman when I was only 13 years old. I am now 19 and "POTO" is still my all time favorite musical. Michael is the essence of the Phantom. No one can portray Andrew Lloyd Webber's work and imagination of the character of the Phatom the way Michael can. I watch a video called "Hey Mr. Producer! The World Of Cameron Mackintosh", which ALW was a part of himself. It had three performances from "POTO". "The Phantom of the Opera", "Music of the Night", and "All I ask of You". The Phantom was played by Colm Wilkinson, and Christine was played by Lisa Vroman. It's not that Mr. Wilkinson wasn't talented; it's just that he wasn't the Phantom. And his portrayal just wasn't enough for me. I wanted to hear Michael Crawfords captivating voice coming out from under that mask. I also feel the same way about Christine Daae and Sarah Brightman. Sarah IS Christine. Her angelic voice, her timid yet strong manner, and even right down to her big, beautiful, doe-like eyes. She is the spirit of Christine. To have two actors other than Michael and Sarah portray the Phantom and Christine become immortalized in something that rightfully belongs to them is unimaginable. I hope that this campaign is successful, and things turn out the way they were meant to be. I will do whatever I can to help you. Let me know how I can be of service to you. Comments: Michael Crawford is to the Phantom what Colm Wilkinson is to Jean Valjean in Les Mis. Having worn out the soundtrack of Phantom with Crawford, when I saw Wilkinson as the Phantom in Toronto, I was somewhat disappointed. Not to say Wilkinson wasn't good, but he just wasn't the Phantom. Likewise, Banderas may be able to sing the part, but he just isn't the Phantom. I don't believe age has anything to do with the performance or appeal of Crawford. Having recently seen Wilkinson recreate Valjean in Toronto, his age certainly did not compromise his performance to packed houses. I think it would be a grave mistake and an injustice to cast anyone other than Michael Crawford in the movie version of Phantom.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the original and best choice to play the phantom giving an academy award winning performance. If they want "bankable" stars, let them fill the roles of Raoul, Christine and the managers; however, I feel Michael alone will make the movie a huge financial success. If they want a movie star like Antonio Banderas who cannot sing, why not instead choose Ricky Martin to play Raoul -- at least he can sing, act and has a worldwide young female following who would see this movie multiple times.

Comments: I learned about your web site in the Sunday edition of the Baltimore Sun Newspaper published July 11, 1999. I was so pleased to read the article, and only hope that your efforts are fruitful. Michael Crawford is indeed The Phantom just as Yul Bryner was The King in The King and I. An article in Parade Magazine published about a year ago indicated that the reason Michael would not be chosen was his age. That's nonsense. I did see the PBS special which included Antonio Banderas singing with Sarah Brightman. I was sickened when I heard him. Michael not only has the voice for the part, but the sense of the character that no one else can duplicate. I attended an ALW concert that featured Michael Crawford. I sat in the front row. Even in a tuxedo when he sang the songs from Phantom, you were mesmerized. My husband and I saw Phantom of the Opera twice in London, but never with Michael Crawford. After seeing him in concert, my husband said that if Michael Crawford ever performs the role again, he would travel anywhere to see him! That is really saying something! Good luck with your efforts! I hope that those involved with the casting are listening to the theatre going public, and not just those looking for a "new name". Michael Crawford would be the draw for the film. Without him, I would not watch the movie.

I mean Antonio was excellent in Evita, but Phantom is a totally different story, and they better not mess up the movie by giving the part of Phantom to him. Michael Crawford on the other hand, is definitely the man to choose! Come on, its HIS PART!!!! He created and gave life to Andrew Lloyd Webber's character. If you don't meet our demands for casting Michael Crawford as the Phantom in the movie, like others have said "Box 5 won't be the only seat empty during the show" SO BEWARE!!! and chose wisely...the better man, MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!!!!!

I cannot say how much I love the production each time, but - the original cast album always supplies my vision of the real "Man in the Mask". Michael Crawfore IS the Phantom . Please , please see that he lives forever in that role.

Comments: I recently read an article in the Miami Herald about this and to my amazement, I guess I'm not the only Phantom fanatic out there. I've never had the pleasure and the honor of experiencing Michael Crawford as the Phantom, but my first introduction to the Phantom was through the Musical's cd; which are the original recordings of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. I know after seeing the Phantom many times, that what Mr. Crawford brings to this Music is not only his expertise as an actor, but this magnificent feeling that envelopes you with this true interpretation and understanding what love, pain, fear and devotion the phantom felt for Christine and the Music he so strongly believed in. Yesterday, I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Sarah Brightman in concert at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami. She was spectacular and of course she sang The Music of the Night among many other of my favorites. It reminded me of the musical and how much I have missed seeing it again. Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber might not have known it when he created this musical that he was going to create a legacy and what better way of passing this on to generations to come, but to create a spectacular piece of film that would provide us all with the magical feeling he has managed to intill in all the eternal fans. Antonio Banderas is a good actor. But no one can replace Michael Crawford. I saw Antonio Banderas recently in the Andrew Lloyd Weber's 50th Birthday Celebration and I am one to tell you immediately there is no comparison what so ever. If he were to cast Banderas as the Phantom he would probably loose all the originality and feeling we all hunger for and receive when Crawford portrays the phantom. Basically what it all boils down to is that Mr. Michael Crawford is the Man!

Comments: I think Michael Crawford is the BEST Pantom ever. No one can ever surpass the emotion and talent he has, especially not Antonio Banderas. I love Andrew Lloyd Weber and consider him a genius but casting Antonio Banders as the Phantom is, forgive me, complete stupidity. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are an unsurpassable pair and I cannot see her at her full potential with A.B. He was wonderul in Evita, but as the Phantom! I wouldn't even see the movie. If A.L.W. really wants A.B. in his movie he should have Madonna play Christine because they would do much better than Sarah and A.B. I'm glad there are other people who were as upset as I am about this.

Comments: I would dearly love to see Michael Crawford star in the movie production of "Phantom". Movie technology could enhance any feature that Michael may be concerned about at a young age of 57. If he truly chooses not to star, then any of the actors from the Toronto production would be more appropriate than Mr. Banderas. He is a fine latino actor. But Phantom is located in Pais, France! I have heard him perform with Sarah Brightman and to hear him say "zee phantom of zee opera" sends cold chills down my spine and I shudder in disbelief. Please consider casting Mr. Crawford as Phantom(Eric). The original is always the best!!

While I doubt that Mr. Crawford was doing the role then, we have heard him sing, and are convinced that Mr. Crawford is "The Phantom". Anything else would be second best. There is no other option when it comes to the overwhelming portrayal Crawford has given to the character of the phantom. Even people who do not frequent the theater know that Michael Crawford and Phantom are two words spoken as one. I hope the studio realizes its unfortunate blunder. Assuming anyone other than the charasmatic Michael Crawford could fill such a role will cost them money at the box office. MICHAEL IS THE ONE AND ONLY CHOICE. Thank you for listening.

Comments: I read your article in the San Jose Mercury News and was immediately intrigued. The first time I saw "Phantom" was 1996 in San Franisco and I went back 6 more times, much to the dismay of my husband. The actor that played the Phantom was very, very good, however it wasn't until I purchased the soundtrack that I realized that I hadn't even heard the magic yet. I saw "Evita" and was pleasantly surprised with the performance of Antonio Banderas, but there is in no way, shape, or form, any comparison between him and Michael Crawford. Crawford's voice is hypnotic and sensual. Casting anybody else in the role of the Phantom is sheer blasphemy. The movie would forever immortalize "Phantom" and it's just not right to do so without using the man who MADE the Phantom. Think about it, Bela Lugosi=Dracula, Boris Karloff=Frankenstein, Michael Crawford=The Phantom of the Opera. Anything less, would be an injustice to this beautiful, romantic, haunting love story.

Comments: How can I express the disappointment my friends, family and I felt when we heard the announcement of the casting of the Phantom. Many of us have seen the Phantom more than once starring Michael Crawford, often times having to travel hundreds of miles to do so. We are not fanatics, harboring school girl crushes on the man, but genuine fans of great entertainment, and we know perfection when we see it. Those who have followed Crawford in the role have either failed miserably at trying to make the role "their own" or have proved to be nothing but a cheap substitute of the real thing. The Phantom of the Opera starring Crawford is the only Phantom we care to see. If your intent is to make a quick buck off a mediocre movie, Phantom is destined to a short lived and disappointing box office, followed by being just one of the hundreds of films sitting in the bargain bin at the video store. However, the right choice on your part, in choosing Crawford as the Phantom, could make this a classic memorable movie, duplicating and exceeding the success Crawford created in the theater, pleasing not only the many fans who know the potential of this great work, but the hundreds of thousands that were unable to witness the performance in the theater, who deserve to see everything the Phantom of the Opera is meant to be.

Comments: The instant popularity of "The Phantom of the Opera" was due to the beautiful music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and those original cast members that sang the music. Crawford's voice struck me as being so unique and extremely fitting for the role, and there can be no other person that is more appropriate for the role of the Phantom than he. To have a Hollywood movie star play the role in a film version simply for a box-office draw is ludicrous and highly outrageous. Michael Crawford is the voice we want to hear, for he helped bring the show a large portion of it's fame.

Even though Colm Wilkenson was the first I saw play Phantom, Michael Crawford has always been the Phantom to me. I was lucky enough to see him in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber when it came to Buffalo in 1992 and it was such an incredible experience. I believe that the only way the movie will have true success is if Michael is in the starring role. That is the only way it will become a classic. I know I would be standing in line to buy tickets!! If W.B. did choose Antonio Banderas it would be just another movie (kind of like Evita was just another movie!). Not everyone was fortunate enough to actually see Michael play the Phantom on stage. I have been waiting for this movie for a very long time, with the hope that I would finally see Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I can't imagine it any other way!

Though Audrey Heburn did a fine performance, I still believe the movie role should have gone to Julie Andrews. The Orignal text, in which Webber took the play from was written by Gaston Leroux, in France. The story takes place in the Paris Opera House. I have nothing aginst Banderas, he has done great things for other movies but after seeing him sing "Phantom" with Brightman on a PBS special. I knew it was not right for him to play the part. ( THE Phantom of THE Opera) Why won't Warner Bros. look at some of the wonderful understudies of Crawford or allow Crawford to help select the right person. How else could someone like myself, who was not able to see Michael Crawford on stage, get to see the original Phantom in the role he created, if not in a film version. To Mr. Lloyd Webber: Remember how many people paid to see Titanic over and over again at the theaters, and how many purchased the video. Comments: I have not seen Michael's performance in Phantom. I did see the touring company and it was wonderful. I wish I could have seen it starring Michael. I am also a big fan of all the Lloyd Webber musicals. Michael Crawford should star in the movie. I can't imagine it without him.

Comments: Found this web site through the article in the LA Times. My note is that having seen the Phantom once with Davis Gaines, once with someone else, and once with Michael Crawford (all in L.A by the way), Michael Crawford clearly defines himself as the Phantom. The movement of his hands and his passion for the character of the Phantom will never be defined by anyone else. Others may be good but none will ever clearly define themselves as the Phantom as Michael Crawford has.

Comments: I think your slogan says it all: The role IS the man. No one but Michael Crawford can play this part. Period.

Comments: I love the Phantom of the Opera music. I love Micheal Crawford singing it. If anyone elses sings the songs it just dosent sound right. If I had a choice of who the Phantom should be it would be Micheal Crawford! No one else.

Comments: Quite a few years ago another stage success "The Petrified Forest" was being transformed into a film version. The studio wanted a big name for one of the key roles. But there was tremendous pressure put on the studio from many sources to cast a relative unknown in the role. This actor was getting great reviews but the studio had never heard of him..... wanted to go with an established screen star. In the end, the studio bowed to the public pressure and cast the New York rising star. The character of Duke Mantee became one of the legendary great characters of the cinema and Humphrey Bogart was on his way!!! Think this lesson might be lost on ALW or WB????

Comments: I saw Michael Crawford on Broadway in The Phantom (and gladly paid a scalper $150 for the tickets), and can't imagine anyone else playing this role...at least not anyone else I'd pay to go a movie theater to see. ALW should maintain the integrity of this play and it's players by casting the true "Phantom"...Michael Crawford in the movie.
