Comments: Michael's the ONE and ONLY Phantom! I saw the play in Los Angeles at least 35 times! I have my stubs and my book was autographed by the Phantom himself. I was also very lucky to see Mr. Crawford at a CD signing venue in the circle at the Music Center. Why can't they just take copies of the play and put it into video? Entertainment rights? I've been waiting ever since the last concert to have it on videotape. I even have the videotape from the Tony Awards years back. My biggest souvenir. Come on Mr. Lloyd Webber, get really smart and sign Michael Crawford. By the way, I found this website while looking at the Calendar section of Sunday's Los Angeles Times.

Comments: The Phantom of the Opera, with Michael Crawford, was by far the best play I have ever seen. Along with the costumes, story and songs, the set and Michael Crawford singing the most wonderful songs that were written for this play, how could anyone ever think of anyone else to act in that part. Michael Crawford was made for that part and it showed. I saw the play with two other performers and no way, was the play as good. How can anyone say the Mr. Crawford is too old to play the part, as his face is covered, but he is truly beautiful to look at, but regardless of that, he can sing and does he do it fantastic. He is the ONLY one to be casted in that part for the movie!!!!!!

Comments: I just read the article in the Los Angeles Times, Calendar section, dated June 27, 1999. I can not believe that anyone would think of casting Antonio Banderas as the role of the Phantom. There is only one Phantom, Michael Crawford. His perfomance was spectacular, the best ever. Casting anyone but him would be a big mistake. I know I would not pay to see the movie with any other actor. I have seen the musical many times, a few with other men playing the Phantom. I must say they were very disappointing. Why be disappointed again.

Comments: There is no other person that could be the Phantom, but Michael Crawford. I would not go to the movie unless it was he in the part. There is no one else that can do justice to the music. I have the video, Celebration, on which Antonio Bandaris sings the part of the phantom. In no way is he any comparison to Michael Crawford. Please do not cast anyone else but him.

Comments: I have seen "Phantom of the Opera" with three different actors in the leading role. Michael Crawford was the only actor who truly made the role come alive...no one else quite fills the cape and mask the way Crawford did. After seeing and hearing Antonio Banderas' appalling singing on PBS recently, all I can say is that Warner Bros. and Andrew Lloyd Webber are out of their collective minds if they think Banderas is the man for the role. I look forward to the day when I can pay my hard earned money (over and over again I might add) to see Michael Crawford reprise his rightful role as the Phantom in my local cinema. I can guarantee that I, my family, friends and co-workers are all looking forward to that day...it would be a shame to loose out on all that money because some dim-witted executives think the flavor of the month can do a better job than the man who gave the Phantom his soul.

Comments: I saw Phantom with Michael Crawford. Later I saw it with Robert G. (what's his name?) and it was a pleasant experience. However, 'a pleasant experience' does not start to compare to the total indescribable thrill of Michael Crawford. There is no other Phantom and I won't see any other. Is Hollywood going to screw up again? For example: Chorus Line was wonderful on stage but the movie was blah; saw Evita three times on stage, but not even once for the movie as I don't care for Madonna, etc. Saw the article in the L.A. Times. What can I do to help?

Comments: I am very dedicated to this cause after reading an article in people magaizine caught my eye. They wanted *ANTONIO BANDERAS* to play the phantom. I was appalled. In my mind there is one Phantom: MICHAEL CRAWFORD! To hell with anyone else who says he's too old, or sh** like that. I know that if MIchae wants to do it, he will. So if this is being sent to Warner Bros. or The Really Useful group, I hope you listen up to all that we have to say.

Comments: I cannot imagine another person besides Michael Crawford in the title role. While "Phantom" ran in Los Angeles, my husband and I went to see it three times -- and only to see the phenomenal performance of Mr. Crawford! It is the first play which has ever moved me to tears -- and it did so all three times. Although I was sad to hear when Mr. Crawford gave his last performance, I had heard that it was because he was preparing for the film version!! I have been waiting impatiently, wondering why it never began filming. Then I heard that the movie would be delayed for a while. It has been a long time, but I never dreamed someone would even consider not starring Mr. Crawford him in the role that he made famous! Mr. Webber, your music is beautiful, but Mr. Crawford is the who who interpreted it and brought it to life -- he is the ONLY Phantom the public wishes to see in the movie version. Ticket sales for his world-wide performances should assure you that people will flock to see him reprise HIS ROLE!

Comments: Once again hollywood doesn't have the nerve to make the right casting choice, but rather a choice that might offer a slightly higher chance of making that big opening weekend. No offence to Banderas (I was very impressed with him in 'Evita'), but what movie, in which he had the lead, was a hudge blockbuster? None that I can recall. But I am not here to bash Banderas -- he could probably play and sing the role, though it would be a much different experience. My primary beef with this casting possibility is that the Phantom must be an older character with a voice that would fit in the Paris Opera House. Crawford has that voice and Banderas does not!Everyone knows what a shame it was that Richard Burton was not in the film version of 'Camelot.' Can you imagine 'My Fair Lady' without Rex Harrison? Crawford does not have the film background that these two did, however no one has been identified with a role more so than Crawford as the Phantom. The short term investment might be a little bit safer with Banderas, but since the film will be how Andrew Loyyd Webber's musical will be seen in years to come, it should star the actor whom he called, "The Phantom of the Opera," Michael Crawford.Beside this casting, my only wish would be to work on the crew of this potentially awsome stage to film transfer.

Comments: I have been a fan of Michael Crawford, through his uncomparable work in The Phantom of the Opera, for quite some time now. Unfortunately, when he was here in Los Angeles, I was too young and did not have the opportunity to see him. However, it has been my wish for as long as I can remember (and that wish gets stronger all the time) to see him in that role (since I didn't get the opportunity). What better way than to immortalize his already legendary performance as the Phantom in a movie version of that exquisite musical! When I learned that Antonio Banderas would be considered for that role, I was shocked. He has done wonderful work in the past, but this is one role consideration that I just don't understand. The understanding is that Andrew Lloyd Webber wants a "box office" draw for the role. First of all, why would you cast a young, good-looking actor in a role where his attractive face would only be disfigured by heavy makeup and then covered by a mask? My suggestion regarding this would be, if ALW MUST have his box office draw and Banderas MUST be in the film, make him Raul, but NOT the Phantom. This would be a compromise that would make both the studio and the fans happy. Michael Crawford is still willing and able to play this role, and no other person could be fathomed by the consumer (who gives the studios their income) to play that role in the movie version. Michael Crawford IS the Phantom of the Opera. Why lose all that money in such a huge endeavor as to make a movie version of this elaborate musical (and paying such a high price for a movie star) if no one will want to go see it BECAUSE of that severely miscast movie star? I DID have the opportunity to witness Crawford perfom a rather large set of music from the Phantom of the Opera in his concert tour last year, and that performance in itself - without costumes, sets, makeup, or anything - was absolutely mesmerizing. He has had the opportunity to capture perfectly every aspect of that tragic character: his voice, his movement, his acting. He made that role, and the entire world fell in love with him in that role, and I guarantee that if he is not in the movie, fans will not pay to watch someone else, who has not had one tenth of the singing experience or classical training as all the others who have tried to follow Crawford on the stage (and still failed to live up to Crawford's excelence) make a mockery of the role. In short, may I echo the voices of the rest of your primary consumers out there in saying that Michael Crawford is the only person who can do this role. Do the musical and the people who love it justice and cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom in the movie version instead of Antonio Banderas.

Comments: Just read about your website in the Sun. LA TIMES (6/27). Brought chills up and down my spine to know there are so many like-thinkers out there! I saw Michael Crawford twice and would walk over hot coals to do it again! Phantom = Crawford = Phantom and if ALW and team ignore that fact they'll pay at the box-office. Not a "threat" or a boycott, just reality. Who wants to see Phantom without the phenomenon that is Michael Crawford starring? Who do you think of when 007 comes to mind? or Moses? or The Godfather? or Rhett Butler? and on and on. Remember last year's "Les Miserables"? It bombed because nobody wanted to see the STORY, they all wanted to see and hear the MUSIC, preserved on film for all time. It will be the same with Phantom, if anyone but MC is cast. Try as I might (and I won't) Antonio Banderas in mask and cape will just be a singing Zorro, it would be impossible suspending disbelief, which is another reason I wouldn't bother to go. Anyway, thank you for your effort and I hope collectively we can positively influence the producers

Comments: I would like to express my feelings on someone besides Michael Crawford playing the role of Phantom in the movie. When you talk about the musical "Phantom of the Opera", you think of Michael Crawford. He has become so closely connected to the role that he has defined by his tremendous performance that it would be incredulous to believe that anybody else would be considered for the role. It is like other famous musical that have been so defined by the actor that played the role. When you think of Zorba the Greek, you think of Anthony Quinn and no one alse. The same thing can be said for "The Music Man" and Robert Preston. Also, the musical "The King and I" and Yul Brenner. I had the priviledge of seeing Mr. Crawford perform in Phantom three times and I saw Davis Gaines in the play once. While Mr. Gaines has a beautiful voice, I found myself comparing him to Mr. Crawford. While each man put a different interpretation on role, Mr. Crawford's performance is the one that moved me and touched my very soul. I have seen many plays in my life, including many of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's plays, Phantom is byfar my favorite of them all. If you must have Antonio Banderas in the movie, how about having him play the role of Raoul? This role seems more like his type of role. My feeling is that if you want this movie to be successful, have Michael play the role of the Phantom and Antonio Banderas play Raoul. This would satisfy the theatre going people and the movie going people and make the movie the success it can be. Sincerely, Lisa Gruenwald

When I heard several years ago that the studios thought Michael Crawford was too old I couldn't believe it. Whoever decided the phantom was young? Is Sean Connery too old? To cast anyone else in HIS role as the "phantom" would be a terrible injustice not only to Michael but also to all of his fans throughout the world that have supported him and lined the pockets of Sir Andrew. Antonio Banderas's voice is way too WEAK for this dynamic part. If the film is ultimately made with Banderas, it will be for two reasons only -- MONEY and GREED!!!!!!!!!

Comments: I can imagine no other person to play the Phantom except Michael Crawford. I have seen the stage show 4 times and Michael Crawford is by far the best. When I heard that the studios were thinking about casting Mr. Banderras the Phantom, I felt betrayed and outraged. Although Mr. Banderras is a good actor, I do not believe that he will be able to play the role with as much passion as Michael Crawford can. I have seen Mr. Banderras singing the part of the Phantom at Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday bash and it did not any feelings of compassion within me as Michael Crawford's did. Michael Crawford has had years to develop the role. He IS the Phantom. There is No other. If Mr. Banderras is casted in the role, not only will I boycott the film, but I will convince all of my friends and family to not pay to watch the film. If Mr. Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros. are casting because of the Box Office draw of Mr. Banderras, I believe the studio will have made a grave error in judgement. There will be a public backlash against the movie, causing the loss of millions of dollars for the studio. The public wants to see the BEST Phantom movie possible. Michael Crawford will make that happen. People want to see Michael Crawford.

Comments: Casting Antonio Banderas as the Phantom would be a major Hollywood mistake. The man is a caricature of all of the Latin film lovers since Rudolph Valentino. His persona exudes a sexuality based on a self-assurance in his attraction to women. His every gesture reeks of male vanity. This is not the sensuality of Erik, who has repressed all feelings toward women until he meets Christine. He has only known rejection. And his "power over her" derives from their mutual love of music. That power can only be demonstrated by his magnificent voice. It must be a voice that can enchant and seduce by sound and word. The thin, reedy voice of Banderas and his poor enunciation of the English lyrics would never be accepted by audiences accostomed to hearing Michael Crawford sing the music. If Mr. Crawford is not cast as the Phantom, they might just as well forget about making the film. It will be a bomb!!

Comments: How many movies have been mediocre or flops because of mis-casting? ALW and Warner Bros.-stick to the story line of POTO: the WHOLE POINT OF THE PHANTOM IS THAT HE HAS A BEAUTIFUL, HEAVENLY, EMOTIONALLY CHARGED, CAPTIVATING VOICE (LIKE MICHAEL CRAWFORD'S, need I say!!)with which to make a young soprano fall in love with him. Because of his disfigurement he must use his BEST ASSET to charm Christine. THE VOICE MAKES THE PHANTOM!! You cannot put an actor who TRIES to sing in that role!! Even with training, that would ruin the phantom character. How can ALW keep his professional integrity in tact and allow some studio execs to ruin the character he created by casting a non-operatically trained singer (who is also a GREAT ACTOR!) to play the phantom???!!!! ALW is a creative and smart man! His original decision to cast Michael Crawford should carry over to the movie version of POTO!! He CHOSE the BEST MAN IN THE BEGINNING!! Yes, others have played the POTO. I have seen many others, but NOONE COMPARES TO MICHAEL CRAWFORD!! Please do not deprive the world of seeing the best actor/singer as the Phantom. Michael Crawford touches his audience emotionally and spiritually. Michael will be appearing near Hollywood,in Cerritos, CA Aug 13,14 (the same venue where he taped his highly rated PBS special). Maybe we should implore all execs involved in this casting decision to attend this new concert. After listening and watching Michael's concert (and seeing the great audience reaction to him), they couldn't possibly cast any other actor as the Phantom. If they do cast someone else they should be fired or asked to resign their positions for making such a stupid decision!!

Comments: I am a longtime fan of the Phantom of the Opera. I am very glad to see Phantom being turned into a on screen movie. I am very upset though to hear that Michael Crawford might not be in it. Michael Crawford id the TRUE phantom. He originated the role and should get to be the first person to play the role on screen. Michael Crawford is a very talented man and the best choice for the role. The effect of the movie would not be the same if some well known Hollywood star were to take the role!!! Michael Crawford is the best choice!!!!!! Phantom Rules!!!

Comments: To ALL whom it may concern: I am very concerned about the rumors of casting of the Phantom in the proposed movie "The Phantom of the Opera." No one but Michael Crawford can do justice to this role - his voice is connected the world over to the beautiful music. I recently attended his concert in Atlantic City, NJ, in which he sang pieces from Phantom. It is sheer magic the way he transforms himself into the Phantom in front of your eyes, without benefit of costume or makeup. Also, his voice 'grows stronger yet.' Please give us Michael Crawford's 'Music of the Night' to cherish for the next fifty or more years!!!! I have never been one to make someone look good by tearing someone else down. Decide for yourself - if you saw the 50th Birthday program for Andrew Lloyd Webber - who should NOT play the Phantom?

Comments: I love the Phantom of the Opera and, after seeing it at Pantages theater, I had confirmed for myself that no one ever could or will play the Phantom beter than Michael Crawford. His voice has that perfect unique blend of music and mystery. In the Original Recording of Phantom, Michael Crawford weaves in the pain, longing and sadness of his character with his wonderful voice. He is the Perfect Phantom and a major aspect to this movie's success.

If Antonio Bandareas wants to be in the film, I suggest he take on the role of Raul, the film is certainly big enough for both of them, but no one, except Michael is fit to wear the mask.

Comments: I've already sent a note but felt compelled to add a P.S. I saw the comments about Banderas as Raoul and could possibly accept him as Raoul (if economics proves to be more important than artistic integrity) with one MAJOR RESERVATION. The opera house is in Paris NOT South America. As demonstrated in the PBS ALW special he is not capable of working beyond a thick, distracting accent. It was ok for Evita BUT NOT THE PHANTOM. Please, even those of us in the midwest who can't get to Broadway are insulted by this. We are not deaf. We may not be able to pay for Broadway, but we do go to movies and buy them more than once!

He could not hit half of the notes, was flat and emotionless. We just watched the video of Michael Crawford in concert.THE MAN STILL HAS IT! He defines the role and we would not pay to see anyone else in this part. Any one else would be an insult to art and a farce.

Comments: I would just like to say that without Michael a Phantom Movie would be nothing. He has the perfect voice for the Phantom. If he didn't, why would he have been chosen as the first Phantom? He is a brilliant stage personality, and it seems as if, when he performs it, he becomes Erik. As a hugh phan I must say that Michael is the choice for this, a big Hollywood name would be in it for the money, not the integrity of tackling such a brilliant musical genius. Please, this plea is for all the phans that will agree with me...choose Michael..for all or sakes!

Michael was not my first Phantom, and, perhaps not my ultimate favorite....but he is the ONLY person who can or should make the movie. This is a great opportunity to make a movie that WILL live forever. Please don't put a pretty face (i.e., Tom Cruse in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE) or a young, light voice AND pretty face (ANTONIO BANDARAS). THIS must be made with integrity. Come on Lloyd Weber, you remember integrity...it worked in your favorite (South Pacific). It will work with POTO ONLY if Michael is the Phantom....WHY ELSE WAS HE CHOSEN IN THE FIRST PLACE? Not only does the man deserve it, he has the sensitivity, MATURITY, and tenderness to do it. Don't turn what has touched millions @$75.00+ a pop, into another empty emotion.

Comments: The movie makers are sadly mistaken if they think that they can put a movie hunk in a Phantom movie and give it wider appeal. The movie's greatest audience will be the same one who loved it on stage, and Michael Crawford Is our Phantom. If they must have Banderas, let him play Raoul! He can play Christine, for all I care, but he is not the Phantom. Crawford fans have waited a very long time to see him in this movie, and it would be really ugly to cheat us in this way!

Any one else who would try to recreate this in a movie would lose pathetically and the movie would be a disaster. At the moment I believe that Antonio Banderas is being offered the role. If he gets it then the image will be shatered - I really do not believe (after seeing him in "action" on ALW's fiftieth Birthday celebrations) that he can get the emotion which is required for the role. Michael Crawford can, and apparantly also expresses a wish to play the part. Just because ALW likes Banderas after working with him in Evita, he should really consider having the ORIGINAL actor playing the part. I hope that this will happen, from Nicholas Blake

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber was right when he picked Michael Crawford to play the Phantom in the musicial, Phantom of the Opera. He was also wise in 1990 when he told Michael and all of us that Michael would star as the Phantom in the movie version. Time has passed and Michael (The Angel of Music) is STILL singing the music of Phantom. Some say he is singing it better now than when he performed in the musical. How could Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber even consider anyone else to play the Phantom. Antonio Banderas' singing does not have the emotional impact needed for the role that Michael's singing has proven to deliver. To cast anyone else to destroy the movie's chances for financial success. Michael Crawford is the only man to play the Phantom. He was the first choice and continues to be the only logical choice. If Lord Webber is seriously considering the bottom line, he will cast Michael Crawford in the movie as the Phantom of the Opera and no one else.

I will be VERY, VERY dissapointed if Michael Crawford is not cast in the movie version of Phantom. Comments: I would like to urge you to cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom in your movie. Michael deserves to have the world see his performance that is famous because of his talents. History deserves to have benefitted from preserving his appearance in this role on film. I never had to opportunity to see Mr. Crawford in this role. Another actor played this part in Chicago when I saw it. But his soundtrack is a classic. We own 2 double CDs and 2 "Highlights" CDs in our family of four. I would be so distressed if Michael Crawford were not cast, that I would not even be interested in seeing the movie. If he is, I can't imagine how many times my family will see it! I have heard tht Michael's age is a factor. As I see it, the Phantom is ageless and a younger man, no matter how large a box office draw, would just not be right. I urge you to take my thoughts into consideration with the countless others who wish to see this movie made with the ONLY Phantom, Michael Crawford.

I've never seen him as Phantom but I have the CD and no other man has such a enchanting and enticing voice as Mr. Crawfords'. I have also seen Evita, both on stage and screen, and agree that Antonio Bandaras was a wonderful choice for the role of Che. But I cannot imagine anyone in the title role of the film version of "Phantom" other than Michael Crawford. Comments: I am a new fan of POTO. I was introduced to it by a friend who recommended that I see it at the Curran theater with Fran D'Ambrosia. The whole production completely blew me away! I immediately ran out and purchased the CD soundtrack. I must admit that I was a little pessmistic about this Crawford and Brightman cast. Since I had only heard one Phantom I was really biased. But when I heard Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, I knew that THIS was the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Michael Crawford was unbelievable. I am more than a little ashamed that I believed that no one could surpass the production I saw. When I heard Antonio Banderas sing the Phantom with Sarah Brightman for ALW 50th B-Day, and I was absolutely horrified!!! There were moments I was unsure as to whether he actually knew the lines, his accent was THAT bad. And his voice completely lacked the power and the passion that Michael Crawford epitomizes! So you can imagine the anguish my family and I suffered when we found out that Antonio Banderas was being considered for the role. Micheal Crawford is the ONLY Phantom. And if he plays the role I know that would be something that EVERYONE would enjoy. I only wish I had seen the orginial cast, and since I can't I know that the movie WITH Michael Crawford would be the ONLY way to fill the void

How could they have forgotten the millions who went absolutely mad for the Beatles and all their long- haired counterparts? How could they forget the millions of dollars in records and merchandise sold to the most affluent teenagers in the history of mankind? How could they not know that we have not vanished off the face of the earth but merely paused to raise our children and our stock portfolios? Disposable income is not a problem for this generation! How can they not know we are all more romantic than ever and quite willing to fall in love all over again, this time with Michael Crawford? It is only our "vanguard" that has already done so! Comments: To Mr. Lucchesi of the Really Useful Film Company and to Mr. Di Bonaventura of Warner Bros.: I believe Mr. Michael Crawford would be wonderful starring in a movie of "The Phantom of the Opera." His voice is perfect for the role; his age is perfect for the role; his graceful acting is perfect for the role. His voice is instantly recognizable as the Phantom's voice and, in fact, it is used constantly to advertise ALL Phantom productions. I understand if your goal is to have a blockbuster movie that will make a lot of money. You must start listening to the fans and realize Michael Crawford would cause that to happen. All you would have to do is advertise it "with the original Phantom of the Opera," and people would flock to it. On the other hand, I can see a big flop coming with anyone else in the part. It's up to you: do you use Michael Crawford and have a hit or someone else and have a disaster? I hope you choose to immortalize Mr. Crawford's rendition of this love story.
