Comments: I believe that Michael Crawford IS the "Phantom." I truly believe it would make more sense to cast your stars in the roles of Raoul and Christine. At least then they would be seen by the audience that they would allegedly bring to the film. What good would it be to cast someone more famous than Michael, just to disguise he looks, and possibly dub his voice!

Comments: The need for a "Hollywood name" should not overshadow the fact that, of all the Phantoms there have ever been, only one actor has personified the role more than anyone...Michael Crawford. Even today, years after finishing his masterful run, he is still recognized the world over as the original and best Phantom. The casting of anyone else in a role that seems destined to be played by someone so blatantly obvious as Mr. Crawford would truly be a shame, and would only further the perception of Hollywood as a town more concerned with names than making memorable movies. To the producers...do what is right...cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom, and let his voice carry the Music of the Night to a new generation of fans.

Comments: Like so many people on this campaign,I too am angry and sickened to learn that Michael Crawford is not being considered (by both WB and RUG) to reprise his signature role in the Phantom movie. WB and RUG need to learn that not all movies will be hugely successful and make a ton of money with big box-office stars. (I can name a lot of WB movies that REALLY prove this). I know that what you phans are doing will convince the money-greedy execs. to get their heads out of their butts and cast the man that will make the movie one of the most successful ever: Michael Crawford, THE Phantom of the Opera.

Comments: Like many others, I thought this casting decision was a no-brainer. I live in the "boonies" so when I recently joined the internet, I didn't know efforts were being made to do something. It's heartening to see so many others as angry about this movie casting as I am. I have sent letters to Warners, Really Useful Company (NY), and Really Useful Films (CA). I would like to send you a copy. I am new to the Internet, so I don't know how to do this just yet. If you could e-mail an address, or tell me how to send it any other way, I'll mail a copy. The letter is 2 pages (typed) long. The letter sent to you by RUG sounds like a PR form letter. Please let me know if there is anything else we can do. Thanks for all your efforts. More letters to major magazines, like the recent letter (June 9th) in "People" would help tell more people about this mess.

Comments: Everyone says ALW is only intrested in money. I do not believe this. Why, might you ask. JUst because the movie has a "big" name, does not mean it is going to sell. I have told friends, not necessarily Michael Crawford fans, but Phantom phans, about this whole situation. These people have stopped me and said that they will boycott the movie if Michael Crawford does not play Erik. One girl even told me she would have all of her friends boycott the movie, too. millions of people own the soundtrack, and listen to, not a man "acting" as the phantom, but a man that would make one double check to make sure that the real Erik was actually dead. Why, when this situation make a perfect equation, did Warner Brothers and others decide to put in an unneeded variable in to unbalance many people's lives? Only a true fool would decide to pay to see an unartistic interpretation of a story that was origianlly presented as a work of art.

Comments: The Phantom of the Opera, the way Andrew Lloyd Webber saw it, is a wonderful story with an extremely complex character at its center. Full of passion, beauty and the pain of love and loss, it needs an actor of incredible sensitivity in the title role. Michael Crawford has proven himself in that role in three of the world's major theater markets, consistently packing the house and bringing people to tears. He is the one who should be chosen to give the Phantom an eternal life on film, as he did on the stage. This movie made with someone else could be very good. Putting Michael Crawford in the title role would make it magnificent.

Comments: If anyone other than Michael Crawford is cast as the Phantom, then I will be utterly convinced that Sir Lloyd Webber is only interested in money and not the artistical integrity of his work. To produce any work of art - be it a painting, play, or musical - for material gain alone cheapens its worth, and no TRUE artist would ever stoop to such lows (unless, perhaps, they were financially hard-up, and somehow I don't think that Lord Lloyd Webber is).

Comments: If they are determined to make a film version of "Phantom," they must cast Michael Crawford in the title role. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas, but this role belongs to Michael Crawford. I believe that if he is given the chance to play this role that he was born to play, he will win an academy award and that Warner Bros. and RUG will have a very special film on their hands. It will not be a throw away as the film versions of so many musicals have been. I always cry when Yul Brynner dies at the end of "The King and I." (A film by the way, made several years before I was born). Please, please, Warner Bros., let me and my children and grandchildren have the chance to thrill at and weep for Crawford's phantom.

My thoughts on the movie is debateable-- but now that it seems that there is no stopping it.. I might as well take a side. I will not see Antonio... or any other Hollywood name. I only saw Phantom once- jus' once at San Francisco. And I am planning to see it again, I have only heard Michael on my CD. He has a brillant voice... which cries out to me every time I play it. I do not have to see M.C. to realize he is the only Phantom out there who should portray Erik in the flim. Doesn't Warner Brothers have any clue to what the public wants to see? Those who haven't seen M.C. or Phantom'-- but has heard the CD would most likey want to see the fello who sings those notes! Antonio? Comments: now, i know that theater goers will hate me for saying this, but, when you make a movie out of a play, it tends to be the "official" version. this is due to the fact that movies are cheaper, and more accessible, and also have larger distribution and advertisement. its because of this that michael crawford must be the Phantom of the Opera in the movie!!! i mean, michael is just the one and only, the first, the original. his power to move people with his acting as well as his voice is unparalleled by any of the other actors who have portrayed the phantom. just listening to the original cast recording, you dont even need to see him, you can just visualize the scenes because of his vocal expression and ability to really emphesis feeling in his singing. this is why michael must be the phantom in the movie, cause in many hearts, he *is* the official phantom. and also, this movie is going to be seen by millions of people around the world who probably will never get the chance to attend a theater production of "Phantom" and therefore, whatever this movie turns out to be, that will be they're ultimite impression on "Phantom of the Opera." So i say, lets do it right!! Leave to a professional whos devoted most of his career to making "Phantom of the Opera" the great show it is today (i am refurring to michael crawford, just in case you were wondering) sincerely, Rayne Knights:)

It is an acknowledged fact that most people (i.e. the people who will actually go to see the movie) feel VERY strongly about this, The notion that he is "too old" for the part is total rubbish- some things improve with time, Miachael is a great example of that (behind the mask, who can tell anyway?). They need to consider who the real fans of the Phantom are, and they are not the teenagers (although I grant that some teenagers may be fans)! We, the true fans of "THE" Phantom, would be less inclined to see the movie multiple times, buy the video, and rave about anyone less than Michael Crawford, and anyone else would be less, period. Who says the Phantom needs to be any younger that fiftyish? Who says the audience would have less sympathy for an older man in love with Christina? Comments: I have been trying to avoid this issue for months now, but it's time to make my voice heard. Though I don't think that necessarily Michael Crawford should play the Pahntom in the movie, any actor who has protrayed the Pahntom on stage could do a great job. I realize that Hollywood is all about money, but why not cast a big name as the handsome aristocrat Raoul. A name like DiCaprio or such would be sure to bring people to the movie, and at the same time the many, many Phantom fans and anyone who has an appreciation for live theatre would be satisfied seeing a musical actor in the movie as well. Why not go with such an idea to please everyone? I myself am involved with theatre and casting someone who does not have a significan theatrical background always proves unsuccessful. There IS a huge difference between acting on stage and acting in a movie. Please reconsider this decision.

Disappointed in Warner Brothers,
Barbara

Comments: I'd like to begin by saying that I do not usually write letters. I just keep my thought to myself, but this time it is different. Something has to be said. I am writing this as a potential customer (a movie goer). It pertains to the rumors concerning the upcoming movie "The Phantom of the Opera." I had the opportunity to see "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. Unfortunately, we had just missed Sarah Brightman, but Michael Crawford was the Phantom. It is a role he has created and brought to life, something amazing to see. Hidden under layers of makeup, behind a mask and cape, his movements created a feeling I just can't describe. I've seen "The Phantom of the Opera" since, and nothing against the wonderful actors in that role, it just isn't the same. Michael Crawford is the Phantom. Every now and then I would read along the lines of a Phantom movie. I so looked forward to it, hoping that I could just one more time see Michael Crawford in this remarkable role and hear him sing those wonderful songs ("The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Music of the Night"). Now I keep seeing that the role of the Phantom may be going to John Travolta or Antonio Bandares. Nothing against either of these men, but why would anyone want to replace an actor that has won awards (Tony, Los Angeles Drama Critics Award, among others) for a role. A role that he has played more that 1,300 times. Let me repeat myself, Michael Crawford is the Phantom. As I said, I have seen "The Phantom of the Opera" numerous times and nothing compares to when I saw it with Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom. I look forward to seeing it again later this summer and fall in local productions. I'm sorry but if anyone other that Mr. Crawford is awarded the role of the Phantom, you can count me among those that will not be in attendance. Also, is Hollywood ready for yet another remake with pretty faces. I'll wait for it to be televised. The latest thing I've read is that Mr. Crawford is too old or his name is not well know enough. Since when is 57 old? Please don't tell my 78-year-old mother. As for Mr. Crawford not being well know enough, you could have fooled me. I couldn't tell with the success of his current CD/album "On Eagle's Wings," his recent PBS special (hailed by many stations as "the most successful pledge drive") and a current concert tour. We (my mother and I) are traveling to New York to see Mr. Crawford during the concert tour, and when I tell anyone that we are seeing "Broadway's original Phantom, Michael Crawford" everyone knows exactly who I mean. NOTE: I am not a young kid, I am forty years old and this is my first concert in many, many years. I believe this will be my mother's first concert! Let me end by saying that if the role of the Phantom is awarded to Michael Crawford, you will have a hit on your hands. I would bet money on it. Remember millions paid enormous amounts of money to see him in London, on the Broadway stage both in New York and Los Angeles. Sincerely, Joann L. Quinn (sorry about the length)

Comments: I encourage ALW and members of RUG and Warner Bros. to go see Michael Crawford in concert. When he sings the songs from Phantom of the Opera, he *becomes* the Phantom. You can actually feel another presence in the room, and that presence is Erik. I have loved the story of Phantom since I first read Gaston Leroux's haunting book. Never did I dream it would be brought to life so passionately, so vividly as when Michael Crawford first breathed life into Erik on stage. That is the performance that should be immortalized through this movie. Warner Bros. has a chance ro make a run of the mill, ho- hum movie with fly-by-night actors....or they have an opportunity to create a classic film, about a classic story, sold brilliantly by the creative energy and talent of Michael Crawford. He *IS* the Phantom................. Betty O'Brien

Comments: Recently, I sent a personal letter to Andrew, stating all the right reasons for the casting of Crawford in the film, which seem to be shared and are stated very well in the introduction to this very website. Moreover, I believe there are even MORE reasons NOT to have anyone ELSE in the role. Having taken this musical to heart, and to a certain extent even performed some myself, I will say to anyone who will listen that, without Michael Crawford, it just won't BE the Phantom of the Opera. The role was originally written with him in mind, after all. Matt "Red Death" deMille

Comments: Definitively he is the best. In my humble opinion, Michael was born destined to this role. It would be a cruel mistake not to place he in the film, for several reasons: 1- Michael Crawford possesses the experience as the phantom that the other ones do not. When I say other ones, I refer to all the other ones, since Michael is the original. All those that later came to represent the phantom, with certainty they had him as example and inspiration. 2- It is a great opportunity for Michael to win the Oscar, that we know he deserves. 3- His performance with Sarah Brightman is perfect. Together they get to transmit what the public wants to feel. 4- Those who see and hear Michael Crawford, mainly as the phantom, understands the true meaning of " Angel of Music " 5- He is the best, independent of your point of view.

Comments: This webpage is superior in its focus, and its gentle influence is felt through out the world. Like the haunting songs generated by the mastercraftsman, Michael Crawford, this page will go down in the annels of the internet, as a true voice for the little people out in "the dark" who pay for tickets and are discriminating in their choice of entertainment. We all will not accept second-best, a youth-obsessed society's decision to conform to the mediocre in movie media. We want Mr. Crawford, he can handle the hard work, has made movies before, is no novice, and holds no candle to anyone else. This webpage is a solitary candle burning, the light of which will succeed in reaching its goal. Either Mr. Crawford, or NO MOVIE! That's all, no if, ands or buts.

Comments: Michael Crawford and Erik's soul are inextricably linked. No one understands Erik nearly as well. Michael is an experienced film actor as well as a stage actor; he has the skills, the talent, the voice, and the soul. His performance is comparable to Yul Brynner's as the King and Rex Harrison's as Henry Higgins. It would be a travesty to cast anyone else as the Phantom. I sincerely hope that those in the decision-making process will allow his legendary performance to live forever on film.

It takes a performance like Michael Crawfords to bring a fictional character like Erik to life. Warner brothers, when you read this take into consideration that MC was the only thing that Frank Rich liked about POTO!! I would hate to read what Frank Rich would say about Antonio!! MIchael Crawford is the Angel of music and the only person alive who could ever play the Phantom to the point that he did. He is truly the Phantom and always will be! Nancy PS--Need anything, Di? I too will boycott the movie if anyone else is in the starring role. I have written to RUG and Warners in the past, and received a reply from Warners that no decisions had been made at that time. Studio propaganda? When you look at EVITA and the controversy surrounding Madonna, that I feel had an impact on ticket sales. Do you suppose the powers that be would make another dumb mistake in casting the title role? Let's hope not. Keep up the good work Diane. Beautiful artwork on your title GIF. Judy

Comments: Hello Diane, All the work you're doing is incredible, and I can only hope and pray that it will come to fruition in the only way that will be pleasing to the public who WILL be the people who place (or don't place) rear-ends in seats: The casting of Michael Crawford in the movie role! I was one of the fortunate ones who was able to see him in the role of Phantom while he was in Los Angeles. I'll never forget it. Many of my family members, who'd never before even seen a stage musical (aside from my H.S. and Jr. College ones) saw the musical from 1-3 times! (And I have a very frugal family!) People were willing to spend OBSCENE amounts of money to see Michael portray this man, most, not knowing anything about his past career or even what he looked like presently. They went because they'd heard the OCR, or someone else said it was so wonderful they MUST. It was THAT good. If people could spend $75 on theatre tickets for such a length of time as they did to see this virtually unknown actor (in the U.S.) why on earth would the "powers that be" think that the SAME public wouldn't see him for the price of $7 theater tickets! It's absurd! MORE people would go! They'd be lining around the block! I personally think it would rival Titanic's success. (I saw Titanic 3 times... I'd see POTO with Michael in the role many more!) I can't understand the mentality out there where people are saying that Michael's "not well-known enough." NO ONE here in Los Angeles really knew who he was! But his acting, his sublime creation of this tortured soul Erik, brought them in droves to the theatre to see POTO time and time again! I remember the first time he did an interview "unmasked" for Good Morning America and then A.M. Los Angeles, and everyone was talking about "now we get to SEE what he really looks like!" Michael DID IT ALL without people even knowing! That's how sublime he is as an actor. That's how wonderful he was in that role! I've never before (or since) seen theatre tickets for a closing performance auctioned off for $25,000.00! But Michael DID it! If anyone besides Michael gets this role, it will be a truly sad day for me. As the mother of two young children who already ADORE musical theatre and good voices (Michael's included) I want them to be able to witness Michael on the screen as Phantom. They were too young to see him at the time he did it on stage. The thought that they might not at all now is sad to me. Michael created the Phantom. They each borrowed something from eachother.... Michael has a part of Erik's soul. As Polly Warfield so aptly put it in her review from "Dramalogue" : "Phantom was waiting for the actor." And the Actor IS Michael Crawford! Cathy C.

Comments: Michael Crawford brought the Phantom to life, with grace, poise, and singing ability only he can do the work justice. It is a shame hollywood cannot make the correct choice. They did it twice when Yul Brenner and Rex Harrison were given the parts they made famous. It is a pity that they cannot learn from these triumphs and allow Mr. Crawford to recreate his masterpiece for the screen. He has the gentle touch, by a miastro's hand.....a musician's heart, and all the pain which the character requires. If only hollywood were grownup enough to choose correctly, not for the money, but for art!

Comments: Diane, I was told to come here and express my feelings about this POTO movie that WB is going to make. Well here I go. I don't want to be rude or cruel I just want to make my opinion, as a POTO fan, known. I want to see Michael Crawford in the role of Phantom and I am willing to do whatever it takes to see that he does. Everyone knows that he IS Phantom. There is no replacing him. He is the one that inspired my love for it. Yes, I am a Michael Crawford fan but even people who are not still know that he is the only one who can play that role and make it come to life. I say if they want big stars to help sell the movie let them put the BIG names in the parts of Raul and Christine. Well, I hope that all of this protesting and letter writing works. Because I would sure hate to have to boycott the movie but if I have to I will. Thanks for reading this. A Very Serious Phan, Becki

The pity, love and understandng that we all felt for Erik was due to his way of playing him.( Not to mention that wonderful voice that charmed us all!!) It would be a very big mistake on ALW and Warner Bros. not to have Michael do the movie. In our minds he will always be Erik. They can search from now until the end of the world and never find anyone more suited to play the lead!!! I would never see the movie with anyone else in the part. I refer, of course, to Michael Crawford. To bring in new, younger fans, concentrate your efforts on finding "stars" to play Christine and Raoul, people who have youth, beauty, popularity and whose voices could be dubbed with no aesthetic loss. This will please everyone and be sure to be a commercial success as well.

Comments: Hello, I understand you are forwarding your guest book to some pretty powerful people, So I thought they might be interested in the effect this man has on a normal, intelligent, demographically correct married mother of two. Here is my personal review of the first two concerts of this genius who is turning me into a musical camp follower! .........."PREPARE TO FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN".......... It's been a long wait for all of us, longest of all for Michael Crawford, but finally our "Angel of Music" is back on tour, raising us all up on angels wings, and with his voice, which is more glorious than ever. His range and power are awesome. Every note is a perfect polished gem. He holds nothing back, giving one expert rendition of song after another, telling it's story, living it's emotions, sharing, creating it's experience for all of us. Texas was full of smoke. Houston was like a steam bath. Dallas was less humid but buggy. Add stage lights. Try to imagine what the temperature on that stage must have been. Michael took no notice, pausing only occasionally for a sip or two of water. ( Take your time, Michael. The longer we are in your presence, the happier we are! We are glad you're being careful. ) He thanked the audience for coming, with a warm and funny moment, down on his knees. As if we would miss being there for anything less than the second coming! Some of us were in face masks, most of us were drenched with perspiration, but, you betcha!, we were there. Once he appeared and began his "Michael Magic", all discomfort was forgotten. There was only ourselves and this amazing, Amazing man! This concert is so personal. Some moments I felt almost alone with him, other moments it seemed I was within just a small circle of friends. Then a song would end and the waves of applause from the thousands of people in back of us would be a wake up call, ...until the next song began. Michael is the ultimate professional. He knows no matter how things seem to go in rehearsal, one never knows how the audience will react to a story or a bit of business. Therefore those of us who are fortunate enough to see the concert more than once ( and aren't we gleefully greedy where this man is concerned) will be able to watch him take a performance, which in Houston was already a blue white diamond, and polish it to unparalled perfection as the tour progresses. The process is wonderful to behold. Just one night later, Dallas was even funnier. And more beautiful. In Houston I laughed, sighed, and, yes, cried. At Dallas, from the third row, center!, I tried to make a mental recording of a concert I never want to forget. You will want to too. When it ends, you won't want to go home. You will stand and applaud and call out until your hands and throat are sore, just as we did in both Houston and Dallas, with thousands of people, established fans and new, everyone wanting more from our marvelous Michael Crawford. We are told that Michael leaves quickly, as soon as he is off stage. I hope he is aware of the noisy demonstrations of love and appreciation he generates, of his triumph each time he definately "Leaves em screaming for more!" With Love, Audrey Aucott

Comments: I have been a great Phantom fan for quite a while and too, was waiting with anticipation for when it might possibly be made it into a movie. When I found out that it was going to be made, my joy was quickly absolved in my horror at the thought of John Travolta playing the role of the Phantom!! I am a HUGE fan of Travolta, but certain roles can and should only be played by just the right actor. It would be like Al Pacino playing John Travolta's role in Grease. Yes, he is a wonderful actor, but couldn't possibly capture the character that everyone has fallen in love with. The only person that I believe would do justice to the role, would be the one and the only, Michael Crawford. I fear that if Michael Crawford wasn't used, there would be quite a rebellion by Phantom fans across the world. The role is one that requires such a great ability to act beyond just your face, and the music demands that it be sung by someone with such expression in his voice that is so rarely found. Please consider the choice you are making, and listen to the public, they are usually right. Michael Crawford has proven himself and continues to do so in everything he does. It can only be right to have him play the role he so deserves, but more so it is only fair to the role and all those who worked so hard on Phantom to have it played by the BEST possible person. Thank you for your time and I hope to see your wise use of judgment in this matter. Sincerely, Melinda

I would really not want to see the Phantom be played by John Travolta or anyone like that. I think that we should stick with the original (and the best) Phantom, Michael Crawford. He's really the only one out there that fits the part. I think that the movie would be ruined with someone else playing the part. I also think that if someone other that Michael Crawford does play the part, the film would be protested by a majority of the Phantom fans who would most likely be the leading profit for the movie anyway.

Comments: Oh good grief! The age issue is utter nonsense and as was mentioned below is a mere and petty excuse to cover up Warner's money-lusting! I highly doubt ALW said this at all! How could a man who recently finished a huge and highly physically demanding Las Vegas stage show be too old for this scaled-down stunt-doubled movie role? I can testify to his amazing abilities as I just returned from seeing him perform his concert live in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. And you wanna talk about appeal? OH wow! He was incredible and that voice and body is stronger than ever!!! He has more strength, stamina, and energy that most 30 year-olds have!! And yes, folks, the man has incredible sex appeal from all ages! Put him on the big screen and you wanna talk about major heartthrob!! He already is without it! Think about it folks, Crawford is part of the original equation that produced the original successful formula. Take Crawford out of the equation and you have no formula! This may sound shallow but Michael is better looking at 56 then most Hollywood "Hunks" are at their prime! He has the appeal and he has already set the standard for the Phantom. If you've heard of Phantom, you've heard of Michael! I for one wouldn't want to be Banderas about now! Talk about pressure and shoes to fill! If he does have to do it, I wish the poor man luck! My best wishes to all of you and most of all, to Michael-- the one and only Phantom of the Opera!! Love, Caroline

Comments: Diane, best of luck in this effort to persuade the makers of the proposed film of "Phantom of the Opera" to cast Michael Crawford in the lead role. I have written previously on my feelings on the subject; now I would like to address separately one other aspect of the issue: it has been suggested that Michael Crawford is "too old" to play the role. This is ludicrous--the original character in the book was close to Crawford's age. Frankly, if there is worry about sex appeal, those who are casting the film should take a look at the females of all ages who are flocking to Michael Crawford's concerts. It's a pity that they don't know the ages of the fans who take part in the numerous internet boards and mailing lists devoted to MC--they range from teens to senior citizens, all of whom are charmed by the actor's wit, boyish good looks and lively personality as well as by his singing ability. Those girls and women will be thronging the theaters to see the Phantom film starring Crawford--and hurrying back again and again!

Comments: A "Hollywood name" in the lead role of the "Phantom of the Opera" film will not insure a great movie. Like a multitude of other theater and movie fans, I am appalled that Travolta or Antonio Banderas or any other current movie heartthrob might be chosen to play Erik. There is only one person who should star in the film and that is Michael Crawford, the actor/singer who brought this character to brilliant life on the London, Broadway and Los Angeles stages. Can anyone who saw him as the Phantom on stage or has seen Crawford's interpretation of the Phantom in his recent PBS special or his current U.S. concert tour picture a performance half as good by some mere movie "hunk"? Do we want to hear that beautiful music sung by the glorious voice of Michael Crawford or rewritten for a mediocre singer? Many of us will boycott the film if it is butchered by Hollywood instead of being made into the great classic which it could be--one which would bring us back to the movie theaters time after time. I hope that Warner Bros. and Lord Lloyd Webber will come to their senses and hasten to cast Michael Crawford in the role he was born to play.

Comments: I am appalled to read that Warner Bros and/or Andrew Lloyd Webber could be considering someone other than Michael Crawford for the screen role of The Phantom. With the recent track records of both (Warners has had a string of dud movies, many of them with Hollywood stars in the lead; Mr. Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard was considered a financial failure and he didn't even bring Whistle Down the Wind to Broadway) you would think that they would not want to tinker with perfection. Michael Crawford made this role his own, and he is the actor most people think of when they think of The Phantom of the Opera. Why would anyone want to put a virtual non-singer (a phrase which describes both John Travolta and Antonio Banderas) in a demanding singing role? The only reason why Banderas was ok in Evita was because he was Everyman. He didn't have to sound good; he had to sound like a bartender, a peasant, a man on the street. There is no way Banderas can sing like an angel, which is necessary if Hollywood is not going to completely change the story. If Warners makes this movie with some Hollywood pretty boy instead of Crawford, they will have a very expensive dud on their hands and Andrew Lloyd Webber will have the knowledge that he really screwed up his best chance at conquering another medium. I fully intend to boycott this movie and future projects from Andrew Lloyd Webber unless we are given a Phantom movie starring Michael Crawford. And I will tell everyone I know, who thinks of me as a Phantom expert, that it will not be a movie worth seeing.

I would love to see him as the Phantom in a movie, especially since I wasn't privileged enough to see him perform the role on Broadway. As far as I'm concerned, Michael IS Erik, and I don't understand how ALW, RUG, and Warner Bros. could even think about casting an actor for the role who is totally unqualified for it(not to mention unworthy)! It makes me soooo angry!! John Travolta is not the Phantom, and neither is Antonio Banderas! Just the thought of either one of them wearing Erik's mask makes me sick to my stomach! What is ALW thinking?! Does he need to have a chandelier fall on his head to knock some sense into him?! I know one thing for sure- I will not pay a penny to see any Phantom movie starring an unqualified actor as the Phantom. The bottom line is: I want to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom, and if not Michael, than one of the other stage Phantoms, who are also deserving of the role!!! The following article appeared in the May 25th issue of People magazine(of this year) on p.47: "How badly does Antonio Banderas want to play the Phantom in the film version of ALW's POTO? Well, last month he flew to London and sang 2 ALW songs(including Phantom's Music of the Night) at the Royal Albert Hall for the composer's 50th-birthday celebration. Lunching w/ALW's publicist Peter Brown the day of the event, Banderas confided that he'd never sung live onstage before........Banderas is ALW's choice to play the Phantom, though nothing will be final until a director is selected." This article infuriated me when I read it! That's all. Keep up the good work, Diane!

Comments: I have just returned from Las Vegas where I saw Michael Crawford perform for the first time in person. How anyone could even imagine that Antionio Banderas (or anyone for that matter) could sing this music better than Michael Crawford is beyond me. I am still numb with awe. The Phantom, after all, was only a voice when Christine first became enchanted. And Michael Crawford IS the VOICE!

Comments: There can only be one logical choice to play the Phantom in the movie... Michael Crawford, the man who originated the role, the man who *is* the Phantom. There have been comments about Michael's age. This is just an excuse for the shortsightedness of those in control. The Phantom is ageless. Recent comments attributed to Michael have indicated his willingness to provide the singing voice for whoever does the role. What a travesty! To put that voice in the mouth of a lesser talent would be a service to no one. To the powers that be... please, come to your senses before it's too late. Make this a movie to be proud of by casting the man who deserves the role.
