For those few who are there to see this it is an awesome experience. I can remember getting goosebumps watching Secretariat win the Belmont by 30 lengths and knowing that I was in the presence of greatness. Michael Jordan did it in Basketball, Muhammad Ali in boxing. Torvill and Dean took ice dancing from a boring sport to a whole exciting new level. And Michael Crawford did it in Phantom of the Opera. There are a lot of wonderful shows with great actors; but that performance goes beyond that into legend. One of the NY reviewers wrote that Crawford's performance in Phantom of the Opera was one of those rare events that you would tell your grandchildren "I was there". Secretariat's feat is preserved forever on tape. So is Michael Jordan and Torvill and Dean. To not preserve Crawford's performance would be a crime. Hollywood may dwell in mediocrity, theater people like Andrew Lloyd Webber never should. Jane |

I heard rumors that Antonio Banderas was to play the Phantom, I was in a plane at the time returning from Los Angeles. If I could have gotten the door open I would have jumped. THE only person to play this role is Michael Crawford. Studio Execs need to learn more about what makes a movie entertaining beyond the dollar signs. If you want to have a young sexy male lead, that's what Raoul is for. if you want perfection in this production that what Crawford is for. The whole concept of story telling is slowly becoming lost in todays film makers. All they want to see is the money, that is not the reason to make a film. If anyone else does this part, it will be a great film thanks to Mr. Webers genius. but Crawford is what will make a great film into a SPECTACULAR film. Thanks for listening. R J Bolivar. |

ONLY Michael can play the Phantom and DO IT RIGHT! My daughter's goal was to have a 4.0 grade point average because we told her if she made it, we would take her to New York to see The Phantom of the Opera. She almost made it, but not quite. She was sick and therefore one of her classes was a "B" not the "A" she needed. Therefore her grade point average at the end of her senior year was a 3.8. She and I love anything that is Michael Crawford and/or Andrew Lloyd Webber. |

I have the PBS concert on tape, I have the wonderful memory of seeing him in concert, I have bits of his Phantom on tape but nothing will ever make up for not seeing it in person. A filmed version, faithful to the original, is the only thing that will come close but without Michael there is no point in doing it. I get upset at the thought of anyone else getting to do the part on film. The one comfort I took from not seeing it in person was that we were promised the film with Michael and I feel betrayed that it hasn't happened. These people may get an audience the first week with a "name" but the word of mouth will be "it would have been so much better with Michael Crawford." We just have to keep at it and hope they finally listen. Thanks to you Di for everything. Pat T |

After I 1st saw POTO in Toronto in May '95 and then went home and bought the tape of the London cast, I will NEVER forget my first reaction to hearing Michael's voice. It mirrored the reactions I've had of him when I first saw him in EFX and then his concerts in Radio City and Pittsburgh. I was stunned, breathless, awed...At Radio City I was literally holding my breath and gripping my chair as I watched him come out and heard him sing "The Phantom of The Opera" live for the first time. Although we do have his concert tape, it would be a crime if his entire performance of the Phantom is not preserved for future generations to enjoy long after if/when the show makes its final performance on the stage. | Name: Diane Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Palmdale, Ca Time: 1999-06-04 07:18:49 Comments: You know Pat, he does sing it even better today. We are all very fortunate that he had the opportunity that came with the PBS concert, at least these songs are now recorded for all time and we have something of his Phantom left to us. They are wonderful, but for me it is not enough. There is so much more that is missing, like, the rest of the performance. Everything about the Phantom that Michael Crawford brought to the stage, all the gestures and the anguish, the anger and the beauty. The scene in the angel, the "Music of the Night" where he first seduces his Christine. The red death, the graveyard, and the one that is very difficult to talk about, the intensely personal and poignant scene on the bench. So much is missing. He created this role and he developed the Phantom into the character that audiences so love even today. As mesmerizing as it is now to watch and hear him sing "Music of the Night" in concert, for me it is still not the same as it was in his lair on stage singing his heart out to his love. He didn't just act the part, he DANCED it, every move was graceful and balletic and I have never seen anyone else who carried an audience with them as did this man, they went WILD I can assure you! More than one husband was dragged unwillingly to a day at the theatre, and then stopped on the way out to buy a T-shirt. This performance deserves to be captured in its entirety and I am still boiling mad that we (I) waited for NINE YEARS only to be told that now they want to use some box office idol to bring in the unknowing moviegoer and make their fast money on a "big" name star. They really are missing it though and are way off target, they have an opportunity here to market the ORIGINAL Phantom. Someone who is already world famous for his voice and this role, and has won every single accolade that can be offered to an actor for a stage performance. My god they should be falling all over themselves trying to ensure they sign him! And talk about a built in audience!! Even the darn memorabilia is already in place. The suits don't have a clue. And if they do use Banderas, the critics and the fans will tear him apart. I don't care if he takes classical singing lessons for the next five years; he STILL will be compared to Michael Crawford. You know what, no matter who they use the actor will be compared, and it is going to be a VERY tough act to follow. Thanks Pat for the supportive post. We'll just keep on until there is some kind of a resolution. Jesh, let's hope it doesn't take another nine years. Di |

They are currently running it on one of the movie channels. I have watched this movie many times in my life; this is the very first time I cried. It wasn't because of the ending, sad though it is.... It was because I am so grateful that this performance was captured so that even after his death, everyone will be able to see Yul Brynner in this, his greatest legendary work. The same exact thing was promised to Michael Crawford and to all of us, and it may never ever come to pass. I still can't believe it, even after over an entire year of hard work and struggle you would have thought I would have worked through these feelings and had begun the process of acceptance. I haven't. I keep going back to that magical day in October of 1989 and the performance when I first saw Michael Crawford as the Phantom. He stole my heart and changed the way that I now view the art of acting forever. I have been to many, many plays in my lifetime and have always supported the theatre and movie musicals. I taught ballet and even was fortunate to have been hired to do some work with ABT. The matinee I attended was supposed to be just another day at the theatre, instead I left the Ahmanson on my knees. Of all the wonderful performances that have been left to us as legacies, there is one that is missing and if things don't change their course it will be lost to us forever. No, it won't affect world hunger, war or the Aids epidemic. But something very precious and special will be never be shared with all those who take a few moments out of their lives to escape for just a little while to a world that is as wonderful as the actor who shares himself unselfishly with his audience. That is what Michael Crawford did as the Phantom, and for what he brought to all of those fortunate enough to have viewed his legendary work from the audience, I will always be grateful. We all took away with us the very same wealth of emotions that he so bravely and generously displayed on stage. I pray daily that he will be given back his opportunity to record it for everyone else. I am now off to weed the yard, do some laundry, clean my home and do all those other things that we as mere "normal" mortals do for our families and ourselves when were not here "crusading." Everyone have a nice day. Diane |

I have seen the on-stage production of Phantom three times and go to see it every time it comes to the Boston area. Twice it started Michael Crawford and although the other performer was wonderful, he did not capture the feelings and emotions of the phantom as well as Mr. Crawford. He is the Phantom and there is not denying that. We are actually driving all the way to NY this summer to see the production again and bringing my 10 year old stepdaughter. She cannot wait. We are sad that Michael Crawford will not be the Phantom at this particular production. Whatever you can do to get Warner Brothers to cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom I suggest you keep doing. He is the ONLY person that could ever play that role for a movie! Michele |

| Name: Amy Chasse Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Connecticut Time: 1999-06-02 20:28:47 Comments: Greetings! I visited this web-site a while ago, but never posted a message. Have been conversing lately with Victor Faughan and must say, he is truly a wonderful guy - made me realize that this is the true Michael Crawford website that I should be visiting - I'd like to participate in the task of having Michael cast as the Phantom, once more! Honestly it seems impossible that anyone else could be considered - Michael was the original Phantom, the true Phantom. Here's a perfect example of why he should be cast: I recently saw Michael perform at Foxwoods Casino last weekend - a truly wonderful performance I might add, but anyway - some people at work asked what my plans were for the holiday weekend - I told them that Friday evening (the 28th) I'd be seeing Michael Crawford. Some actually didn't know who he was, but as soon as I said, "You know, the original Phantom of the Opera" - they instantly knew, no more questions about who he was or what he did. Here's another reason why he should be cast - I've now seen Phantom of the Opera on Broadway 5 times - each time, I always compare the Phantom to our dear Michael. Can't help it, and I feel bad too because the men who I've seen do the role of the Phantom are very good, but no one is Michael, no one ever will be. Now, here's the ironic thing, I never saw Michael as the Phantom, but heard him on the Original Cast Recording - and immediately fell in love with that voice - the only voice of the Phantom. I know that deep in my heart. So if that's not a sign, I don't know what is! I also wanted to take this opportunity to say Hello! to Diane and the rest of the true Phantom (and Michael Crawford) fans here at this website. Victor tells me Diane that you're a great lady - and since I think he's great, it must be true. Victor also mentioned that you once posted a picture of him on the website - any chances of seeing it once more? So now that I've posted this little greeting, I must ask - is this the right place for this greeting, or does it need to go onto the message board? I'm hoping someone will let me know so I can actually feel a little productive! :-) Glad to be part of this - actually, not glad, but honored. Sincerely, Amy Chasse |

THE ACTORS JUST CAN'T SEEM TO FILL CRAWFORD'S HAUNTING VOCALS AND EERIE DESPERATION AND LONELINESS. HIS IS A VOICE UNLIKE ANY OTHER I'VE EVER HEARD. IT IS SURPRISINGLY DISARMING AND ALMOST OTHERWORLDLY...DISTINCT, UNIQUE AND TREMENDOUSLY POWERFUL. CRAWFORD (AS HEARD ON THE CD) WAS THE PHANTOM. I CAN PICTURE NO OTHER VOICE OR CHARACTER THAT WOULD DO THIS FILM JUSTICE. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE LIKE ME THAT HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A CHANCE TO SEE CRAWFORD IN HIS ROLE. THIS WOULD BE OUR CHANCE. IT'S JUST A SMART MOVE. |

Otherwise, release the film rights so another option can be considered. But above all don't ruin this one. To Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber: Stand up for your own artistic integrity, and cast this film right. This version lasts. To Antonio Bandaras: Don't make a bad career choice. Any attempt to live up to a classic performance (Michael's) with this much fan support is doomed to failure. To the Campaign: Keep up the fight. It's not over until the fat lady sings (or in this case, Michael Crawford)! To Michael Crawford: Thank you for the wonderful performance that we all want to see immortalized on film. |

From: Springfield, OR Time: 1999-05-31 21:53:08 Comments: I guess I first fell in love with POTO about 2 months ago, when we were playing an arrangement for band. Our oboe player brought in the original cast recording, and played "Music of the Night" for us. I heard the usual teenage remarks around me, the "What is this crap?" and "Why can't we just play?". Not me. I just kept thinking to myself, "Who IS this guy? He's AMAZING!" I asked her who it was, and she told me that it was Michael Crawford. That night, I got a copy of the CD for myself. I don't think a night has gone by that I haven't listened to it. When I first heard about ALW making a movie of "Phantom", my first thoughts turned to Mr. Crawford, and my conviction that he was a sure thing for the lead. And then I heard about Travolta. And El Antonio. What is up with this?!? Shouldn't it be obvious that the only guy who can play the role is none other than MC? That's what half of my band class and I believe. I think old age is getting to ALW. If he has one sensible thought left in his head, it should be that Antonio Banderas does not make a good Phantom. As my generation so kindly puts it: "DUH!" |

I mean standing up for our man! Michael Crawford is so handsome, and probably one of the nicest guys. He has a voice that ould make angels jealious. He is the perfect Phantom. Ture he has come along way from the bumbler Frank Spencer, and might not have as much expericence in the film buisness like Antonio. But he has dedicated his life to music, and knows how to sing pretty darn well, so that makes him the best Phantom there is (not including the real one). Also 'we need a big name', that is stupid. Who can't call Michael Crawford a big name. Look at all these people here to chear him on. Look at how many people have come here to express to the world about Michael Crawford's incredible talent. How can Warner Brothers (or anyone else) look at this page and claim Michael Crawford isn't a house-hold word! Now, there is no reason to put Andrew Lloyd Webber down. Without him there would be no Phantom, and we might not know who Michael Crawford is. Now that would be a lose! Besides if you go and look at the quotes, Andrew is semi-chearing Michael on himself. As for Sarah Brightman, she should be Christine. But if Andrew thinks she is too old maybe they have someone better in mind. (Personally Sarah is the one of the closest things to Christine there is. But maybe there might be someone better) And I (personally) would love to see Steve Barton take his place as Raoul once more. He is goergous. He makes Raoul seem half decent! (And that in it's self is amazing) I have to say good-bye now. Great page. And keep saying "Michael Crawford for Phantom!" |

I ask this because to date he has missed the London and Broadway anniversary shows, and ALW's birthday show. I would love to hear him sing with Sarah again, and these would have been 3 perfect opportunities to reunite with her. Also, is Michael's agent, Mort Viner doing anything to get the role for Michael?? It shouldn't be up to the audience to get him this role--that's what he's paying him to do!!!**************************** Hi Caryn, As recently as the weekend of May 15th Michael Crawford told the Atlantic City Press, "It's something I would like to do because I created the role and have a great love for it." He also told Howie Mandell the same on his television show. Why he did not attend the Birthday Celebration must be for reasons related to last years concert tour, but it really IS a shame, we would have loved to see him reunite with Sarah Brightman just as yourself and it was an opportunity missed. Whatever his management is doing one thing is for certain, they are not road blocking this campaign. I am not certain if an actor CAN politic for a role for himself, maybe the fans are the only ones who are able to speak up as we have been doing. I do not know all the workings of Hollywood or what goes on behind closed doors, I'll just pray that if Mr. Viner does find himself behind one of them....... He says all the right things and wins for us all a classic film. Thank you for visiting and signing your support. Diane |

I am sorry but Antonio Banderas as the character is just not a good decision. So he is a nice looking leading man and could draw in alot of money but for what. All of the teenage girls it pulls in will never understand the story line they'll just want to see Mr Banderas. I, myself and am only 23 and was first introduced to Phantom at the age of ten when I read the novel. I saw Micheal Crawford as the Phantom and after that realized that he was Erik. To me it looked like he understood the years of pain and suffering that Erik had endured and was just wanting to be loved. In my opinion if Mr Banderas is chosen to play Erik in the movie I assure you that I will never pay the money to see it. It is almost sacreligious not to have Micheal Crawford play the part. Although, I like him as an actor, he is no singer!!! And singing is the whole point of the role. Michael Crawford has an incredible voice and it will be a real shame if they don't reconsider him for the role. He should play the Phantom, after all he's the one who made the role famous. He is the reason for the sucess of the musical for all these years. Anyone who has seen Phantom knows and loves Michael Crawford!!! I hope that Warner Bros. realizes the terrible mistake that they are making by casting Antonio bandares instead of Michael Crawford. |

How could anyone even conceive that there could ever be another person so right for the role of the phantom. Surely anyone with an ounce of common sense would realize this is the only way this musical would ever be a success. |

The most important aspect of this movie is the music. I beg you to choose the man who can make the world stand still when he sings. (P.S. The last time I checked, the Phantom wears a mask...)P.P.S. Did the names on the screen draw people to see the Titanic or the Phantom Menace? If your movie is good, and gets great reviews people will go see it. |

| Name: Mary Ann Workman Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Downers Grove, ILl Time: 1999-05-17 19:33:52 Comments: Hopefully, Mr. Andrew Lloyd Weber will realize that if Michael Crawford plays the part of the Phantom, it will become a classic one day. You can tell just by his TV concert how he puts his heart and soul into the part when he sings the songs from the Phantom. To Antonio and John Travolta it is just another part, but to Michael he really puts feeling into the Phantom. If they hire one of the two above you might as well ask Arnold Schwartzeager to play the part also. They mention the age factor, but the Phantom wears the mask most of the time anyway. And whats wrong with the way Michael looks anyway? He looks great! I heard Antonio sing a part of the Phantom on Channel 11 and if he got the part, I would not go to see it, not even to be curious. Mr. Andrew Lloyd Weber should listen to the voice of people. We are the ones who will pay to go see the Phantom and if so many of us vote for Michael how much more proof does he need. Besides, Mr. Weber himself picked Michael for the stage performance and it was a tremendous success, so how can he doubt to pick Michael for the movie? |

After viewing Sir Andrew Lloyd Webbers birthday concert i cant believe he could even consider Antonio Banderas although nice to look at he cant even approach the vocal skills and feel of the character. Please make the right choice and choose Mr. Crawford immortalize his triumph for future lovers of the Lloyd Webber masterpiece thanks, liz |

I was so moved, so enthralled, I'll never forget it. I can still remember things like Michael Crawford's hands, the way he walked, and stood. I can hear his voice moving all through that theater. I can hear that agony in his voice, the crying, the dispair. I can remember the anger as he leaned from the statue of the angel, again, I could see his hands. He was so regal, so haunting. I also went and saw Phantom of the Opera again, here in my hometown, last year, with two other actors playing the role of the Phantom and Christine. I have no memory of them. Not one. I remember the sets, but only because they were the same as were backing up Michael Crawford over ten years ago. Twelve years later, and I still remember Michael Crawford's hands. Yeah, put Crawford in this movie if you want it to work for years and years and years. Randi |

The audience was a mix of young and old and they all agreed why anyone else other than Mr. Crawford would be considered for the Phantom in the movie production is ridiculous. His is the only name (like Yul Brynner "King and I" and Rex Harrison "My Fair Lady" who brought their roles to the movie screen) that comes to mind when thinking of the Phantom. The original songs are perfect as long as the perfect singer/actor for the role sings them...MICHAEL CRAWFORD. Why can't Antonio play Raoul? A POTO movie needs Michael's sexy, sensual, deep emotional style and haunting presence,(not to mention the best voice anyone's ever heard) for those songs! His acting style/singing voice makes me quiver and brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to the Original London Cast recording. Nobody else can do that to many, many fans! I will boycott everything involved with the POTO movie, including ad sponsors-hit them also where it counts-IF MICHAEL CRAWFORD DOES NOT REPRISE HIS WELL-DESERVED, TONY AWARD WINNING ROLE!!
