Please just get the movie cast and filmed so we can all quit worrying about it. You make your decision and then we'll decide whether to go and see it. To be perfectly clear, if you make it with someone less of an actor than Michael Crawford I will not be seeing it. Just thought I would let you know. Summer Montero |

We waited long enough now and some of us would like to see this movie before we die. I thought Mr. Crawford had a contract to play the Phantom in the movie. Whatever happened with that I don't know but they are making a terrible mistake now. Michael Crawford is famous as the Phantom and he is obviously what the fans are expecting. It looks like Hollywood just doesn't get it and they could make a lot of money on Mr. Crawford's performance. Aren't they gambling when they decide to use an actor who is yet untried in this role? Can his voice compete? And the final question, will Antonio Banderas's career withstand the blow if he fails? Looks like he will have a lot of fans mad at him already. Maybe he better think it over. |

Please use Michael Crawford. Don't ruin it by putting someone else in the role. If you need an example, look at what happened to MAME when they used Lucille Ball instead of Angela Lansbury. HELP! Thank You. P.S. Lisa Vroman from the San Francisco production would be a super Christine. |

To cast anyone else as the Phantom in the movie version would be to profane the role. If anything, Warner Bros.' consideration of other actors shows how poorly Hollywood is gauging public interest at the moment (as if movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact aren't proof enough). The way I see it, much of the show's success was from Michael Crawford. |

It would be a crime against art to cast anyone else but Crawford in the movie. This movie is the only way for people in my situation, and others who did not have the chance to see him perform, to see why there is so much contriversy over who plays a role in a movie. I saw Antonio Banderas sing at Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday and it was quite comical. He had to vibrate his head so that his vioce would libretto, he didn't get the words right, and on top of that his vioce couldn't compare to that of Michael Crawford's. The casting of this role, I believe, will be what makes or breaks the movie. Michael=makes and Antonio=breaks. |

Since then I have tried to spread my enthusiasm to friends and family, and their reactions to his unparalleled talent were just as immense as were mine those wonderful days in music class. It is my belief that Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and Michael Crawford's voice were made to be together, and this movie should be no exception. It would be a crime against culture to deprive our society of what would surely be one of the greatest preformances Michael Crawford has ever given, and indeed the greatest show introduced to our theater-going society since... well, ever, really. |

I think the powers that be at the movie studios don't realize what a powerful box office draw it would be to have him perform his signature role on film -- especially for those of us who weren't fortunate to see him perform on Broadway. Antonio Banderas may be a bigger name and he did a creditable job in Evita, but he is handicapped by his "name recognition" and his accent. If he were cast as the Phantom, I think I would sit in the movie theatre and think to myself: "Look, Antonio kidnapped Christine." Talk about killing the magic of movie illusion! Just by being himself, Antonio also would draw too much attention from the story and the music. Isn't the actor supposed to support the show -- not the other way around? Let Antonio be Raoul -- there's a part he can put his stamp on without interferring with the storyline. Let Michael be the Phantom again, and let all of us movie goers benefit from his deep understanding of the show and the character. |

(you may edit if you feel necessary , but I needed to speak the truth) I'm seriously POed that the movie biz thinks we (the younger generation) need some A-list studmuffin to enjoy musical theatre . Yes ! the name 'Michael Crawford' does ring a bell to most . I can give you the names of at least 15 teens who own and LOVE their POTO Original London Cast Recordings . Why ? Two words . . . MICHAEL CRAWFORD If you are now saying to yourselves 'They haven't even given ANTONIO BANDERAS a chance !' . Well , we viewed , we listed and we didn't enjoy a single moment . Phantom needs to be filmed now and it needs to be filmed with Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Anyone else in the role will relegate it to the all to long list of forgetable and in many cases just plain awful film adaptations of great broadway musicals. If in doubt perhaps he should rent The Wiz and try to picture 35 year old Diana Ross as a fifteen year old girl. It didn't work then and it doesn't work now. I've heard some nonsense that Michael is too old to play the part. What rubbish! First of all the Phantom is supposed to be older and secondly he's completly in makeup so who could tell? It's the singing voice that carries the role and Michael Crawford has the market cornered. His name as top billing will guarantee a winner. What more could anyone want (except Sarah Brightman, my favorite, who is, sadly, too old to play Christine anymore)? |

But I suppose the average movie-goer doesn't appreciate talent, but rather sex-appeal, which is why I go to the theatre, not the movies!! |

Answer:He couldn't and probably didn't want to embaress himself by trying. Or maybe he should have tried then WB and ALW would realise Michael is the only one for the role. |

I became a fan when i heard the soundtrack of the original show. I fell in love with Michaels voice immediately, and i know that if a movie is made starring Michael, i feel everyone who goes to to see it, will live with a special moment in their lives they will never forget. Michael is a wonderful actor. Please lets show the world what Andrew lloyd webbers Phantom is about, and who better to show them than the man who made the phantom so internationally famous. MR MICHAEL CRAWFORD. Please i beseach you. MICHAEL FOR PHANTOM. Hopefully Loree |

It was truly brilliant, moving and unforgettable. Since then I have seen others perform the role, but, to my mind, none achieved the depth of Crawford's performance. He truly found the Phantom's soul. His is the performance that should be memorialized for generations to come. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. |

His singing ability is so great and his acting ability speaks for itself. His longevity in that role on Broadway should be evidence enough. Thanks for the sincere consideration |

Personally I think that Crawford should play the Phantom in the upcoming movie, but if Banderas is allowed to perform in the role of the Phantom, then Crawford's voice should be dubbed over Banderas's. No offense to Mr. Banderasor to Mr. Crawford, of course. Thank you, Rebecca |

Only Michael Crawford could play the lead in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I saw him perform 10 times, no one else can sing and move like Michael. It would be a tragedy if ony one other than Michael played the PHANTOM. Antonio Banderas is a good actor, but he is no Michael Crawford. |

He is noted for his good looks and so is Raoul. Michael Crawford although just as adorable is the Phantom; please use the best actor for the film: Michael Crawford! |
| Name: Heresrosey Website: Referred by: AOL From: Texas Time: 1999-04-07 11:08:40 Comments: I have been here before and have made my thoughts clear regarding the Phantom of the Opera movie. Recently, I watched a rerun of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday celebration. Of course, I agree with everyone else that Antonio Bandaras'attempts at singing as the Phantom were completely lacking. What intrigued me, however, was listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber's comments about preserving musical theatre and also speaking of a sequel to Phantom. A song, intended for the sequel, "The Heart Is Slow To Learn" evoked feelings and lyrics that a sequel would indeed bring Cristine back to the Phantom. I found this to be quite interesting as it opens the possibility that perhaps Lord Webber may have Michael Crawford in mind during this embryonic stage of a second Phantom musical. I would be interested in others' opinions regarding this possibility. Please feel free to email me at Heresrosey@aol.com. |

I also have seen two other phantoms after him and all I can say is there is no Phantom without Michael Crawford. If you want a hit movie, then cast Michael Crawford. If you just want to make a Phantom of the Opera movie, then you can cast Banderas. As I said before, there is no other Phantom. It's Michael Crawford or don't even bother. |

I listen to his CDs over and over for hours. His emotion and vocal clarity are incredible. To do a movie version of Phantom of the Opera without Michael Crawford as the phantom would be utterly pointless. Cheers to whomever began this campaign. |

To break this tradition will be letting down millions of fans who flocked to admire his essence as the one true Phantom. Replacing him in the film not only will make the film a disaster, it will foce millions of fans to refuse to see it. I am in full support of the campaign to keep the Phantom the same and please everyone, which I am sure Mr. Webber wants to do. |

Figueroa Website: College of the Holy Cross Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Worcester, Massachusetts Time: 1999-04-05 01:31:28 Comments: In my 15 years as a performer there have been very few actors that have won me over and inspired me. Michael Crawford is one of them. His work, aside from "The Phantom of the Opera," has been magnificent. In all his performances I truly get a feel for what he is doing as he adds three dimensions to the character. He defines all that he plays. His acting is incredible and his singing is that of an angel. As the Phantom he has made the largest impact on me as well as millions of other fans. I have seen multiple performances of "The Phantom of the Opera," in various places. All of which included "Phantoms" played by great actors like, Colm Wilkinson,Thomas James O'Leary,Franc D'Ambrosio, and Mark Jacoby, to name a few. None of these men compare to the performance of Michael Crawford, which I was lucky to see. He IS indeed the Phantom. There is no one else that could give justice to that role except for Mr. Crawford. ALl that I am saying is that to give the role to another actor would be a travesty. Antonio Banderas can hold a note, but nothing like Mr. Crawford. Antonio's singing is weak and without emotion. He cannot possibly carry the difficult notes with proper feeling and emotion successfully as the role of Phantom requires. Having seen him in "Evita" as well as his Phantom performance with Sarah Brightman, he is in no way capable of performing as the Phantom. He does not have it in him. Antonio just cannot sing well. Michael Crawford, with his magnificent voice, is the only actor made for this role, for it was he that made the Phantom a legend. If it is money that we are looking at, Michael has made the show what it is today and has brought in millions of dollars between his early performances and cd sales. Can we say the same of Antonio w/ Evita CD sales. No we cannot. Michael is definately the only possible money-maker for this movie. Put Antonio in it, people may go, but they'll leave w/ a bad taste in their mouth and without the understanding of what the show is really about. They will leave without being consumed by the legend of the Phantom. Not only will the ovie suffer but also the broadway production, for if people hate the movie because of Antonio after paying $8.oo to see it, there is no way that that same customer will shell out $75.00 to see it live. He will kill the legend, and that is the sad truth. So, I beg that when making a decision as to who will play the Phantom of the Opera, I strongly urge you to choose the true man behind the mask, Mr. Michael Crawford. Thank You, Pedro A. Michael devoted a number of years to Phantom and made the role his - influencing how Eric is portrayed in the show - the body language and passion that Michael displayed in the role can be seen in others who have carried on in the role. If ALW wants a "big" name in the show, he couldn't choose any better than Michael Crawford. |

Just like Sean Connery is THE original James Bond, to Peter Reckell, THE original Bo Brady (Soap opera: Days of our Lives). The person who originated the role, should do it always. What about a campaign to cast Sarah Brightman in the movie, the ex-Mrs. ALW. |

Unfortunately, we were never able to see him perform Phantom live, but have seen the show several times. Watching ALW's 50th Celebration was truly illuminating - Mr. Banderas was a great Zorro and did well in Evita, but cannot perform Phantom up to the standard of MC. (The Spanish accent just doesn't get it!) I hadn't heard JT was being considered, but although he is a good actor, we don't beieve he is vocally ready for such a role. Michael Crawford was and still is the best Phantom ever!! |
