Comments: I totally agree that Michael Crawford should be the Phantom! I personally have never seen it, but I do have the CD, and the first time I listened to it, I cried three times. And Michael Crawford was singing everytime. And that was in 7th grade. Now I'm in 8th, but I am constently driving my friends nuts about how Michael Crawford should be the phantom. I think if Warner Bros. were smart, they'd cast Michael right off the bat. He'd draw such a large crowd with his name only.

Comments: I never had the privilege of seeing Michael Crawford perform as the Phantom, but I do have the cd soundtrack to the play. I listen to it very often, and I am in awe every time I hear him sing. He evokes so much emotion into each note, and I can visualize the play being performed in my mind with such amazing brilliance. I have seen The Phantom of the Opera performed twice, and while I did enjoy the singing and the acting, to me it just was not as powerful as I envision Michael Crawford's performance to be. Also, as I stated, the singing was enjoyable, but it was also incomparable to the quality of Mr. Crawford's talent. I would DEFINITLY go to see a movie version of this phenomenal play - IF Michael Crawford was offered the role as "The Phantom"! WHO - ELSE - BUT - MICHAEL - CRAWFORD - COULD - PLAY - THIS - PART?!?!

Comments: Back with another idea: What about casting Banderas as Raoul? He would be in, they would have their "big star", and everybody would be happy!!! He's in perfect age, he looks good, he gets the girl at the end... :-((( The longer I think about it, the better I like it!

Comments: Also for me Michael Crawford is the one and only Actor I could imagine to play the role in a one-to-one on the screen. Banderas is a brillant actor, but he's much to young to do the phantom and I think would miss the deep emotions between heart and hate Crawford performed. By now I only heard the CD's bcose I never made it to London to see him live on stage and so my only hope to "get the feeling" was to see him in the movie!

Comments: Michael Crawford is a wonderful Phantom. Ever since I first heard his voice on the London recording of the show, I knew that he "was" the role. After that I have has the (dubious) pleasure of seeing Ian Jon Bourg as the Phantom and let me tell you, there is no way he can ever measure up to Michael Crawford. Now I hear they want to cast Antonio Banderas in the role of the Phantom. Why, at least Ian Jon Bourg could ACT! Banderas can't do even that! They went from a man who could both SING and ACT (Michael Crawford) to a man who could ACT (Ian Jon Bourg) to .... well, a NOTHING (Banderas)!!!! All I can say is: AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: I just want to add my support in the campaign for Michael crawford for the phantom movie. I unfortunately missed Michael when he done the stage production, i became a fan after i heard the soundtrack of the stage show. I fell in love straight away with Michaels voice, and was so pleased when i heard that a movie was to be made. Now i feel really gutted, how could they even consider replacing Michael is beyond me. For me Michael is the Phantom and always will be, and like a lot of people i would never go and see it unless Michael is casted.

Comments: I agree that it is appalling that anyone other than Michael Crawford is being considered for this role. He is the soul of the Phantom and willing to play this role and it should be given to him before he loses interest. The less than mediocre performance by Antonio Banderas at ALW's 50th Birthday Party should wake anybody up to the fact that he cannot sing and cannot do justice to this role. Make this film a "classic" - not a comedy!

Comments: As it has been said many times, many ways: Michael Crawford is the ONE, the ONLY, the ORIGINAL--"THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA"!!! He should be the one doing the movie. After all, he created and originated the role that many of his successors are doing! As one of them said along those lines, the other actors' are doing Michael Crawford's show. He went through the whole process first, he created it. Michael Crawford should be the one to do the movie! I share the opinion of many of those that if it is not Michael Crawford, I will not pay one red cent, dime, nickel, quarter, dollar to see the movie! Enough said.

Comments: When I heard that "they" were thinking of casting Mr "Zorro" Antonio Whatever, just for the box office draw, I thought it was such a shame. Doesn't years of a Broadway run, not to mention his incredible talent count for anything? I suppose he'll join the ranks of Julie Andrews, Patti LuPone, Carol Channing and so many others who were not "good enough" to do the movie of their stage production. Most likely, the movie will suck anyway...they always do!

Comments: This is to say that Michael Crawford has not only my support, but also the support of my mother who is probably the biggest MC fan I know. To us there is only one Phantom of the Opera and that is MC and no one else. To have someone else play the Phantom would be demeaning and would not be credible. Thank you.

Comments: I also wish to convey my support of Michael Crawford to play the Phantom in the movie. It's a bit ridiculous and insulting to suggest that anyone else should do so. No one else can give the role the passion that Michael does. No one knows the role better than Michael. Why not go with the best? Do things right, Andrew, and you'll never regret it! With Michael, the Phantom film will go down in cinema history along side 2001 and Ben Hur. It will be of the same caliber of Casablanca. Casting anyone else will dilute the energy that your story has. Thank you for your time and attention. Carmen Jackson

Comments: Actually, I was led to this Web site by the woman who created it. I'm astounded by the overwhelming response to her campaign! I have never seen Crawford as the "Phantom," but I have heard the soundtrack, as well as the gushing praise of his performance in the role. Unfortunately, I DID see Senor Banderas in "Evita" -- that is, before the movie put me to sleep -- and from his performance, I would surmise that he does not possess the vocal range and fortitude for such a role as the Phantom. Based strictly on Mr. Crawford's track record and his history of playing the Phantom, I'd have to cast my vote in his favor. Besides...1,700-plus guestbook signing fans can't be wrong!

Comments: I would personally much rather see Michael Crawford in "The Phantom." Ever since I first heard the soundtrack of "Phantom," I fell in love. Michael Crawford is the only one that I would pay over ten dollars to see. Mr. Crawford is such an inspiration to me that anyone else playing "Phantom" would just seem wrong. If I had to pick one idol in the music profession, it would be Mr. Crawford, hands down. As a seventeen year old female who seeks to one day have a musical career, I think that Michael Crawford as "The Phantom" would be a dream come true. I think that the world will indeed loose something if Michael Crawford was never cast as the Phantom. It is my sincere desire to see Michael Crawford play the Phantom. I only wish that I could have been in my future brother-in law's shoes when he was at Michael Crawford's last performance in LA. I hope to be able to witness for myself the power of Mr. Crawford as the notorious "Phantom of the Opera." I however do not wish any of this if this is not something that Mr. Crawford does not want to do. I think that if Mr. Crawford would rather see someone else play his role, than so be it. No matter how much I would like to see Mr. Crawford himself play the Phantom, I would rather have him do it because it is what he wants to do. I do hope to see Mr. Crawford perform as the Phantom.

Comments: I've signed this before, but signing again can't hurt. Michael Crawford is is synonymous with the Phantom character, and casting Banderas in his stead would be cheapening the whole story. Banderas was wonderful as Che, I'll admit; but he lacks the sensitivity and passion that Mr. Crawford epitomizes. Banderas seems to merely be being typecasted, which is wrong to begin with, much less if they're not suited for the role. If ever you read this, Lord Lloyd-Webber: The overwhelming response to this ought to tell you ^something^. And if ever Mr. Crawford reads this: In the hearts and minds of millions, you were, are, and always will be the one, ^true^ Phantom.

Comments: There's no question about it -- the movie of _The Phantom of the Opera_ *has* to have Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Considering what he did with and for the role to make it all but legendary, how can anyone else be cast in that role? How Antonio Banderas ended up as Che in "Evita" I doubt I'll ever figure out, but even that's not as ludicrous as the idea of him as the Phantom. When will people realize that he's an actor, not a singer, and simply can't measure up to such multi-talented actor/singers as those in the original _Evita_ and _The Phantom of the Opera_? Even if the proposed Phantom *was* an excellent actor and singer, Michael Crawford would still be the best choice for the role. Yes, a flashy star would lure more crowds, but in the long run casting someone who is all but guaranteed to play the role wonderfully is better.

Comments: We had the honor and privilege of experiencing three outstanding performances of Michael Crawford in Phantom of the Opera in Los Angeles. We saw another performance as well, without Mr. Crawford. It was good but it wasn't the same. His voice, his emotion, his interpretation and characterization are superior. We have enjoyed his cd's and other live concerts. We are never disappointed. We were disappointed, however, when we watched Antonio Banderas recently on PBS; his singing and his performance of Music of the Night was uninspired and unconvincing. The film version of Phantom of the Opera will last forever in the motion picture archives. This film deserves the best, and the best is Michael Crawford. He own the role, he is the Phantom, and the world automatically recognizes Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Why settle for less?

Comments: I have seen POTO 14 times. Many of those performances were with Michael Crawford. I have also seen Davis Gaines, Robert Guilliame (sp?), and Ron Barton (?). Quite simply, Michael Crawford is the Phantom. His performance must be preserved on film. It was special. I saw Antonio Banderas in Evita. His singing was OK for that limited situation. Many in the audience giggled from embarrassment because of his limited abilities. Plus anyone who saw the recent 50th birthday celebration for ALW cannot seriously consider him for the role. Likewise, POTO is along way from Grease. I haven't heard John Travolta sing lately. There is probably a reason for that. if he had been much of a singer, we probably would have heard him during his long period of acting inactivity. Unless Crawford's health precluded the possibility of his participation, this decision is a no-brainer.

Many people I know, wouldn't even go to see the movie if M. Crawford doesn't get the role. How can ALW think Antonio Banderas would create the energy that Crawford can give the audience? That's more politics than art.

I've listened to the Original London Cast Performance and it never ceases to move me to goosebumps. Michael Crawford's voice portrays an element of passion that takes the listener on a voyage of emotions. I would thouroughly enjoy seeing Mr. Crawford as the Phantom in a movie. Comments: This should be addressed to Warner Bros and Really Useful Productions................ After viewing and RE-viewing the PBS special for Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday special (3/99), I am even more convinced that casting Antonio Banderas as the phantom would be a monumental mistake. I like Antonio Banderas but he is completely wrong for the role. His voice is VERY weak and not capable of handling the challenging role. He is also way too young to be considered a convincing character. Antonio's SPANISH accent is a MAJOR hindrance as well. It interfers with his singing and is not appropriate for a story that supposedly takes place in Italy. In my opinion, the movie should be done correctly or not done at all. That means casting Michael Crawford in the pivotal role. There were tens of thousands of people who saw Michael Crawford perform in Los Angeles, New York City and London, and many more that literally flew to those cities to see the musical. I WOULD NOT go see the film if less capable actors were cast in the movie. You people know deep down that there is no other choice. Forget about demographics and think about story for a second--though the target demographics who are knowledgeable about this musical would vote for Michael Crawford hands down--it is a poignent love story about a man haunted by his past as well as his love for Christine. There are multidimensional emotions that need to be conveyed while the story is playing out. Michael Crawford achieves them LIVE without the benefit of a camera crew. You are sitting 40 rows away from the stage and you see and feel the torment and confusion that he is going through. Can there be any doubt who should really be playing the phantom????? (Michael Crawford, in case you forgot!)

Comments: I cannot imagine why Hollywood would ignore the obvious. We fans of the Phantom of the Opera have eagerly awaited a possible movie--so that those of us who missed seeing Michael Crawford on stage would get the chance to see his acclaimed performance immortalized on film. I certainly don't understand the possible casting of Antonio Banderas. If Hollywood is hoping to attract the 20 something demographic, they are making a major mistake--20-something fans of the "Phantom" are also fans of Michaels--The rest of us are tired of this excuse for poor casting and project development. Warner Brothers and Andrew Lloyd Webber risk undermining the existing fan base in an effort to attract an audience that is not known for consistency. Don't sacrifice the quality of a major work and take such a great risk. Michael is the best possible choice for the role.

Comments: There is no better Phantom than Michael! Bandaras is not a musical star, just a pretty face, and that isn't required for this role. What is needed is an exciting voice and gobs of sex appeal, which is M.C. Let's have Sarah Brightman as Christine also. Do it right, Warner Bros.

I have been waiting and wondering about the movie ever since I heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber was considering making a movie. Keep up the good work.

Comments: I was looking forward to the movie version of the Phantom of the Opera with Michael Crawford as the "Phantom". I was very disappointed when I found out that ALW was casting Antonio Banderas. I saw the ALW 50th birthday celebration on KCET with Banderas singing the phantom song and he just does not have the powerful, mesmerizing voice that Michael Crawford projects. If ALW and Warner Bros. want a classic movie, they should cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom, and Sarah Brightman as Christine. The POTO is musical theatre; and musicals draw a certain group of audience. If Warner Bros. want an actor that can draw the other audiences then they can cast Banderas as Raoul. This way they will not disappoint the many many phantom fans who were looking forward to the movie version of the POTO with Michael Crawford as Erik. Michael Crawford is the "Phantom".

Comments: In regards to the casting of Michael Crawford in the movie version of Phantom, I would like to say that I saw two performances of Phantom in Los Angeles. One starred Michael Crawford and one didn't (I can't remember the actor's name. That's how unremarkable he was.) The differences in the two actors' performances was so great that I decided I would never attend a performance of the Phantom that did not feature Mr. Crawford. I sincerely hope that Mr. Webber has the good sense to go with Mr. Crawford. He IS the Phantom!

Comments: Recently saw ALW's 50th birthday celebration on public TV. Antonio Banderas sang The Phantom of the Opera. I assume this is to introduce us to the new phantom. Mr. Banderas is a fine singer, but his voice can't be compared to Michael Crawford's. Crawford's voice is full. He sings with emotion--acting the part with his voice as well as his body language. Banderas is also too young, slight of build and intense without actually acting the part. Crawford moves the listener emotionally. I've seen four performances of the Phantom with four different phantom's. None have been able to create the emotional response required for the telling of this story. If Crawford doesn't get this part, it will be a sin. You can tell ALW so for me. Thank you.

Comments: I think that it is disgusting how Hollywood try to capitalise on the magic of theatre, and they always fail. The one thing that would ensure this does not happen to Phantom, is if they cast it correctly, which means using Michael Crawford. I hope that the morons in Hollywood realise this before they ruin yet another great piece of theatre.

Comments: Hi. My name is Sarah Gray. I have been a fan of "The Phantom of the Opera" since I was 3 years old. I am now 16 and this play has made a dramatic impact on my life. I have adored Michael Crawford and admired him for everytime that he steps up on that stage and gives the always ethereal and heart-stopping performances as the tormented and love-stricken Phantom. I think that it would be foolish to cast anyone else in this role. Michael Crawford may have done it a thousand times over, but he IS the Phantom. Yes, Antonio Banderas is very talented, but I think that he would be better suited as the young lover Raoul. Let Michael Crawford have the spotlight as the Phantom, he deserves it because he is without a doubt one of the most talented men to ever grace the stage. Sincerely, Sarah A. Gray

Comments: I have seen Phantom about 30 times, in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Orlando. I have seen probably 10 different leads, and have always considered Michael Crawford the yardstick by which all others are measured. The role of the Phantom is pivotal to the success of the play (and I think the same will be true for the movie, though perhaps to a lesser extent, depending on how true to the play the movie is). Perhaps most people don't realize that, but I do, and I imagine anyone who has seen Michael and others as the Phantom would agree. I STRONGLY support your effort to promote Michael Crawford as the Phantom. The movie will only be made once, and it deserves the best Phantom. And Michael Crawford deserves to have his performance captured for posterity.

Comments: I learned of the "Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign" in the L.A. Times. We were fortunate enough to see Michael, THE PHANTOM, on opening night at the Ahmanson. Antonio Banderas is a real cutie, but his voice is TOO WEAK to carry the Phantom role, he just IS NOT a trained singer. Please don't BLOW your one chance to DO IT RIGHT. For the movie to SUCCEED, Michael Crawfor MUST play the PHANTOM. Please do not repeat your "EVITA" movie mistake.

Comments: We were fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford perform at the Ahmanson. After observing Tony Banderas' feeble attempt at "Music of The Night" with Sarah Brightman for ALW's 50th anniversary on PBS, we are convinced that only Michael Crawford can play the role of the phantom. We were embarrased for Banderas.

Comments: Have seen "Phantom of the Opera" 3 times. Twice with Grant Norman and once with Brad Little. Norman missed a note..( I should say THE note..."soar") in MOTN the first time I saw him. The next time he was better.. but still lacked...something. Brad Little? Please. He was pathetic and that is being kind. I had the immense pleasure last year of seeing Michael Crawford live during his tour. I also was even more immensely pleased to have front row and dead-center seats. A late bithday present. I was less than 10 feet from him..and I can only say that his voice is at least 5 times better live. I hadn't believed he could possibly sound any better, but? To hear him live? Puts the original cast recording of "Phantom" to shame! My mouth fell open and stayed there for most of the show in awe. Even my husband was impressed and went out the next morning and bought Michael's newest CD. To imagine him in that part, on film to have forever? Well, what more could any TRUE Phantom fan wish for? There is NO ONE else that should be cast in that part. I'd certainly go see the movie with Michael in it.. buy it and perhaps an extra for when I wore that tape out! If...and I do say if. If Lord Lloyd-Weber truly cares at all about what the people who made this musical so sucessful really want? He'll give it to us! And that means Michael Cawford in this role! Why make the film a poor shadow of what it could be? Why not give your best to create your best? Surely, that makes sense. I have all of Michael's albums.. I have the tape of his show. I have another tape of his and I also have the premier collection video with Michael doing "MOTN". I believe I have put my money where my mouth is. And if Michael tours this way again? I'll buy tickets in a moment! Well worth it!
