I recently heard him trying to sing with Sarah Brightman on PBS. He is not the one to play the Phantom. He just doesn't cut it. Most people interested in the movie want Michael Crawford cast as the Phantom. After, he is the Phantom. |

Michael Crawford is the only man who can Star in the movie version of "The Phantom of the Opera", he is the only man who can perfectly play the Phantom. I have seen so many productions of the musical and they only bring tears to my eyes for one reason, they depress me. The musical has never been the same since it lost Michael Crawford, he portrays the part like no other man can. I am shocked and appaled that Antonio Banderas may be chosen to play the Phantom. I will protest in every way I legally can. This site has my full support. I can now say that if the movie is filmed starring Antonio Banderas I will never again see a movie produced by the Warner Brothers company. To whoever reads this, don't let them win, Michael should star in the movie, his fans will agree, and we will be triumphant. |

John Travolta and Antonio Banderas are fine actors but are not THE Phantom. That role will always belong to Mr. Crawford. (I am also a Superman fan and also find it incomprehensible that the same Warner Brothers would cast Nicholas Cage in that title role.) Good luck. |

He is so special to watch when he performs, and I don't believe there is anyone who would not be absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to see him in the role of the 'Phantom' on film -- it would be an experience of a life time for everyone. His portrayal of the Phantom is pure magic and it must be captured forever! Thank you, Lisa Murphy Burlingame CA |

I think that Mr. Banderas is a very gifted actor, however, I think that it would be wrong for him to be cast in this role over Michael Crawford, who originated the role of Phantom on stage in London. Mr. Crawford IS the Phantom and no one could give the role what he has already done. I am asking you to please cast Mr. Crawford as the Phantom, as it wouldn't be the same without him! |

Michael IS the Phantom and having someone such as Antonio Banderas take over the role is just ludicrous. Did you happen catch in ALW's birthday celebration? He does not have the persona nor the voice for this roll--it was laughable! It MUST be Michael! |

I have not seen Michael Crawford on stage in this role but I have the CD and cassette of him singing with the original London cast. He is magical! I saw Michael's PBS special with Dale Kristian and couldn't help thinking I missed out when I saw others play the phantom on stage. I love the musical but Michael takes the acting and singing to a higher plane...hauntingly heavenly!! His acting skill in this role was by far the best. If Michael Crawford is allowed to play the phantom in the movie version I can forsee an Academy Award nomination for him and the movie! Why would Warner Bros. and ALW jeopardize the success of the movie by putting someone else in the role? They must be crazy! LET THE MOVIE SCRIPT FOLLOW THE BROADWAY MUSICAL EXACTLY... USE THE ORIGINAL CAST!!! MC IS THE ONLY PHANTOM!!! |

While Antonio's voice was fine for Evita, and John Travolta is an accomplished actor neither is my idea of a worthy "phantom". Last summer during a Michael Crawford concert broadcast on a PBS (KCET Los Angeles) fundraising drive calls came from women from 17 to 70. The seventeen year old referred to Mr. Crawford as her "Angel of Music". When Michael hovers over the leading lady during the "Phantom of the Opera" duet we all grow weak at the knees. Andrew's problem is he is not a female so he cannot possibly know what his female audience craves and I can assure you that women have been the ones buying the tickets to "Phantom" in California. We want Michael. This part requires a strong singer not some "body". Yours truly. Robin L. Daskin |

We listen to the original soundtract everyday! We are going to Toronto and London this Spring and Summer just to see it again, and again. However, we recently saw a PBS special with Antonio Bandares (sp) singing the role and were TOTALLY disappointed. While he has a fine voice, it was NOTHING compared to what we have come to love. | Name: Susan Stubbs Website: Referred by: Yahoo! From: Philadelphia Time: 1999-03-18 19:34:19 Comments: While I do admire Antonio's work in several movies, he should NOT be cast as the phantom. I saw him in Evita and he did well, but his voice and stage presence are not suited for the phantom - AT ALL! This movie, if made well, could introduce breath-taking music and a beautiful story to many people who can't afford broadway tickets. I strongly feel that everyone should have a chance to appreciate this wonderful musical if they can't experience it live. However, as a movie it must be done with respect to the broadway show. Miscasting someone with a weak voice just to have a Hollywood name in the movie is near-sighted, shallow and disrespectful to a legendary, amazing broadway show. |

Until I read that they were considering casting Antonio Banderas in the role of the Phantom. Are they crazy???? Michael Crawford was *born* to play this, and choosing anyone less would be a disaster. Yes, this musical has a compelling story, but it's a musical (emphasis on music). If they get someone who can carry a tune, but no more, it will be worthless. I hope Hollywood realizes that they may draw in a few more people initially by choosing a movie actor, but it will flop when the first few that see it say it sucks. |
| Name: David & Laura Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: NYC Time: 1999-03-17 23:13:37 Comments: Why can't Warner Bros. and ALW learn from the history of the Broadway stage-to-movie process? Stick with the original Broadway cast of a musical when they make the movie version and they will have the same or greater success!! The cult-like following of POTO will be brought to the masses of people who do not attend theatre due to geography or budget concerns. Note: Dale Kristian as Christine would be great if Sarah Brightman cannot star in the movie. POTO's popularity is unprecedented! If Hollywood follows the stage version with Michael Crawford, the movie will make millions. Fans will see the movie numerous times and buy the video! Why would Hollywood sabatoge their own project right from the beginning? Give the public what they want and they will spend their money!! That is Business 101 in case Hollywood has forgotten!! |

I saw his PBS concert (with Dale Kristian) and he convinced me! He is the ONLY one for the movie role of Phantom! I went crazy when he sang the songs! He is a sexy, powerful and emotionally sensitive man!! You cannot deny him the movie role he created on stage! I wish he would do the stage show again! I would love to see him! The movie version if done in a romantic, musical way would be great with him! I would see the movie many times and definitely buy the video!! Without Michael-NO!! |

We then attended one of his sold out concerts where Michael and Dale Kristian sang songs from Phantom of the Opera. There was no comparison! Michael Crawford's performance evoked a sensual, passionate feeling in all those around us at his concert. The way he sang with Dale Kristian made you actually feel HIS emotions AS the Phantom. He had us all in tears and my girlfriend with goosebumps all over her body! He's fantastic! Men of the world should unite for the good of our personal lives! Give our women what they want! They want Michael Crawford! We would love to see Michael Crawford in the stage version but if we cannot, you MUST allow us to see the romantic movie version starring Michael. He IS the only singer/actor to play the role. HE IS THE SEXY, BIG NAME DRAW the movie needs! Michael Crawford IS the POTO. When we spend our money, if my woman is happy, I am happy. Everyday my girlfiend listens to the London original cast CD of POTO (with Michael Crawford, of course). She gets a loving feeling within her and a smile on her face for hours afterwards. Don't deny her (and my) happiness! Cast Micahel Crawford as the POTO!! |

His performance gave me butterflies in my stomach. I am not the only one who shares these feelings. I have discussed this musical with many of my friends and acquaintances of various ages. The feelings are unanimous. Michael Crawford stirs powerful emotions in women of all ages with his wonderfully haunting voice and acting skills. My grand-daughters told me he took their breath away when they saw him in "Phantom of the Opera"!Why would you NOT cast a man who has that affect on women, young and old, alike? We discussed the fact that, "men just don't get it" regarding Michael Crawford in this role and the wonderful feelings he leaves with his viewers. Why not let the general public see and hear what we, who have seen the stage production, have already experienced: Michael Crawford in his senuous, passionate role of the "Phantom of the Opera"? No other Hollywood big name could fill Michael Crawford's shoes in this role. I won't see the movie without Michael. |

Being an on-line petition organizer for something myself, I think that you are all doing a wonderful thing here, and I totally support you. Michael IS the Phantom, and the part should be his. Not to say that there haven't been other good Phantoms on stage (Ciaren Sheehan was excellent in Toronto and is now Raul on Broadway) but Michael was the original and deserves the part much more than Antonio Banderas does. The Raoul part has the most beautiful song in the musical so Banderis might consider it. |

You do not seem to realize that the reason there is commercial call for Phantom to be made into a movie is because we were so moved by Michael Crawford's performance. HE is why the public wants a movie. HE is who we want in it. You will not be giving the public what they want with anyone else. What then, would be the point of making the movie at all? Surely by now you must know that we are not few in number. Those same hundreds of thousands of phans who wanted a motion picture are now the ones in this campaign against signing anyone but Michael Crawford. Please, please believe us when we say that we will boycott Warner Bros. and The Really Useful Group, and believe us too when we say we are doing all we can to make this outrage public. No doubt over the last several months you have seen evidence of this. We care very strongly about this, enough to do anything we can to ensure that we'll have what we want. I do not really understand why Michael Crawford was not really considered. The things I've heard don't seem to make any sense. It is not possible that by now you would not know for a fact that if Mr. Crawford is not cast, that the movie will flop. Please, do your job and give us what we want. He lacks the quality, range, emotion, soul, understanding, maturity and personality needed to portray the Phantom of the Opera. My husband, who dislikes that particular musical, (overkill on my part probably) remarked on how poorly the man sings. Did anyone but us note that his voice CRACKED at least twice. When you try to duplicate a successful musical on the big screen do it with class. Use as many of the original stage performers as possible. That's what the public expects and deserves. At the very least hire people who are trained to sing! If the two original principle theater stars are unavailable, use the performers who replaced them on Broadway. Should Warner Bros. and A. L. Webber decide to remain hard-headed and refuse to accept the fact that they will make a bad mistake creatively by using Antonio B. or even John Travolta; they will be dooming the movie to financial failure as well. All the make-up and special effects in the world cannot overcome someone's inability to portray their character. Read the original novel gentlemen, everyone else has. How does your choice for Eric compare to the original character?(re-read the previous 2 sentences) The BOTTOM LINE.....if you're not going to do it right, don't do it at all. Sincerely, Ruth Anna Klyver |

I believe that not only will it be the best choice but also the most profitable. Michael Crawford is the only actor that can pull off the role of the Phantom with great power and emphisis. And trust me i've seen alot of other Phantoms try to imitate what Michael Crawford can do with his eyes closed. I thank you for time in reading this letter and hope you will take my consideration in hand. Yours truely, A loyal Phantom Phan (no pun intended) |

I would encourage the boycotting of the film if Michael is not cast in the lead!!!! Carole |

In addition to a weak voice, no range, and crude phrasing, I couldn't understand 95 percent of what he was saying due to his thick accent. Contrast this with Michael Crawford's crystal clear diction and you could cry just thinking about how Antonio would mangle those beautiful POTO lyrics. Seems to me the "angel of music" would lose his powers of seduction if nobody could understand what the heck he was saying. What a disaster the film would be with an amateurish Antonio in the lead role! It would not only be bad, it would be laughably bad. Save yourselves this humiliation, Andrew and Warner Bros. Give the paying public what we want--the only true "angel of music," the man whose voice can truly mesmerize an audience--Michael Crawford! |

Honour the ALW pledge and give the part to Michael. Everyone knows he is the PHANTOM. You only have to listen to "Music of the Night" to know that!!!!! Stop all the fuss and give MC the part. You will make hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of people very, very, happy. Just think of the Revenue a video version of the "Phantom of the Opera" could achieve! It's wonderful--great music and fantastic performers--with one exception. Antonio Banderas was so bad it was pitiful! Talk about your thorn among roses or sticking out like a sore thumb. The man has a weak voice, no range, and absolutely no sense of phrasing. The thought that ALW may entrust his POTO masterpiece to this totally unsuitable performer almost makes me nauseous. He must have lost his mind, and the inmates who are running the asylum at Warner Bros. must really be idiots if they are going along with this! Fortunately, my ears could recover from this insult by watching Michael's concert again immediately after the ALW show. The contrast was staggering--from the ridiculous to the sublime. From incompetence to brilliance. Please, please, please, Andrew and Warner Bros. Give us, the paying public, what we want and what will guarantee you a huge success. Give us Michael Crawford in the movie of "Phantom of the Opera!" |

Before I knew about this on-line campaign for Michael, I was outraged that Warner Bros would reneg upon their commitment to Michael and fans of the musical, and was not going to see the movie. I would think that Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber would want to preserve the integrity of his work as well. To pass this opportunity to capture Michael's performance on film is a travesty. Michael is truly a household name and world wide star in his own right. He has enjoyed success on film, stage and television for decades. "On Eagles Wings" and his accompanying concert was a critical and commercial success. I firmly believe the only reason Warners wants to cast Antonio Banderas or John Travolta is because they are commercially "hot" with young moviegoers. Money, not quality, is the bottom line. I wouldn't be surprised if they won't remix some of the songs to have a hip hop beat and release them a singles. Spanning all age groups, Michael IS the phantom, just as Carol Channing is Dolly Levy and Ethel Merman is Gypsy. It may be unfair, but in my eyes without Michael, it will be a bomb and not commerically successful. Much more money would be made with Michael in the role. I am casting my full support behind this effort. Thank you for this opportunity. |

Michael brings us back in touch with the hearts that we swore at 18, we'd never lose...the soulful, intense, feeling heart; the heart that time relentlessly tries to harden. We've all felt like "faces on parade", hiding so the world can never find us, but if we're lucky enough, we may find a few souls that see us for who we are and allow us to be what we are, and when you find that one something that touches your heart like none other, it will stay with you and become a part of you forever...that's what Michael did for us. And believe me, the cheer that went up here at the campaign could be heard echoing all throughout the corridors of the web!!! So, here goes: DARYL H. MILLER, Times Staff Writer...... "Phantom of the Opera" fans will be interested to see Antonio Banderas attempt its title role, in addition to re-creating his Che from the movie version of "Evita." While his gravelly pop voice is well-suited to Che's sardonic commentary, it is a long way from the honeyed bel canto required for the Phantom's hypnotic songs--and that could pose a problem if he's tapped to make the "Phantom" movie, as has long been rumored......... We would like to thank Mr. Miller for making our day and having extraordinary taste in Phantoms!!!!!! |

A video of Michael Crawford as the phantom in the movie version of the stage play would be one of my most prized possessions. Michael made me love the poor man. He. turned a horror story into a believable love story. The book was written long ago and the ending cannot be changed, but if I were Christine, I would have stayed with this phantom because Michael Crawford is behind the mask. I love the Three Tenors, and when I knew I would be going to see them I prayed very hard for nine months that it would not rain and they would be in good voice and not sick. I was a wreck. But this thing about Michael is driving me crazy. I is all so unnecessary. Why is Lloyd-Webber doing this to Michael and all of us. Money? Michael has made him tons of money and only Michael can give him an Academy Award. |

I am of the young generation who likes Broadway shows and Michael. Antonio Banderas (YUCK,GAG,SPUTTER!!!!)is the worst singer ever. He was bad in EVITA and he's still bad. And I think it's prejudice that Andrew and Hollywood won't let Michael star in the Phantom movie just because I quoate, "he's too old". That's sick. He's a very fine 57 year old gentleman and is hardly old. He still has his youthfullness, and is kind, gentle, and calming and hardly any of that Leonardo or Banderas junk.
