Comments: I cannot believe that anyone other than Michael Crawford is being considered for the role of the Phantom. I fell in love with the original cast recording some years ago when I borrowed it from the local library. I soon purchased my very own copy of the ORIGINAL cast recording. That incredible voice did not have a face for me until I saw Michael Crawford sing "The Music of the Night" at the Tony Awards some years later. Those of you who are responsible for this catastrophy of casting cannot really expect us to believe that Michael Crawford is not a big enough name to star in the role. Take a look at this guestbook. I enjoyed Antonio Banderas as Zorro very much (despite the fact that I really enjoyed Guy Williams in the role). Banderas was wonderful as Zorro because, get this, Zorro needs a Spanish accent and does not sing! Banderas might do very well in the role of Raoul. He is very talented and charming. I am ever at a loss for Hollywood's ability to cater to the least common denominator. Why must this casting choice rest on mass appeal rather than overall quality? Why would you assume that you should stick a "familar name" in such a role as the phantom? Please just cast Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom. We (I'm relatively sure I speak for quite a few folks) will be extremely grateful.

He got my bodily fluids going in the theatre and now why not in the movies. I can't wait. All of the little old ladies floating out of the movies. All I have to say is that he is a roooooooooooooooooooottttttttttttttttttttttttt.

Comments: I'll try to explain. It is very important to cast Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom for the movie. Many of us from the X-generation were lured into stage musicals by the mystic of Phantom of the Opera. But it is Michael Crawford who captured our hearts and opened up a whole new, fascinating world for us.

Comments: I myself have never been fortunate enough to see "Phantom" performed on stage (though I'll finally have the opportunity this spring in Buffalo, NY), let alone see the "great" Michael Crawford in the part of the phantom. I do however have the original soundtrack and as far as I am concerned Michael IS the Phantom. Since I first heard of the possibility of a movie I have held my breath hoping that this would at last be my chance to see Michael in the roll that belongs to him and him alone. I cannot accept another in the roll. Though I love the musical I for one will not see the movie if another is cast in the part. Please, Warner Brothers listen to the thousands upon thousands of "Phantom" fans world wide and cast Michael Crawford as your phantom. Give us all the chance to fullfill our dream of seeing the only true Phantom of the Opera. Believe me you won't be sorry. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas, but as the Phantom? Sorry, I just can't picture it. How can so many fans opinions mean nothing. After all aren't we the ones who can make or break a film. You would have a guaranteed hit on your hands. Please give me the opportunity to see the man born to play the part, in the movie version. I promise I would definately see it more than once. Hoping to see my dream come true, sincerely, Deb Szymanski

Comments: I am in love with "The Phantom of the Opera" and would love to have a home version of the musical some day- as long as Michael Crawford is cast as the Phantom. He is quite talented and does a wonderful job as the Phantom..so why deny him the motion picture role as the Phantom? I myself have exposed quite a few people to "Phantom" through the R.U.Group soundtrack and they love Mr. Crawford's voice. Unfortunately, they can't see the musical in person- so at least let them see him in the movie theater.

Comments: THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE HOW WONDERFUL MICHAEL IS PLAYING THE PHANTOM. WHY IS THERE A QUESTION ABOUT HIM PLAYING THE ROLE IN THE MOVIE. THE MASK MADE HIM LOOK OLDER THAN HE IS EVEN NOW. AND THAT FABULOUS VOICE IS ERIK 'S AS MUCH AS IT IS MICHAEL' S. PLEASE DO NOT BETRAY US. CAST MICHAEL AS ERIK. I am seventeen years old and I LOVE MICHAEL. I so want to see him play the phantom in the movie. My mother bought his recording of the originial play and I have grown up listening to his beautiful voice singing those songs. I want to see him as the phantom. Comments: Michael Crawford has proven himself an excellent suitor to carry the role of "The Phantom". To turn your back on him would be a betrayal, not only of his excellent service, but of the millions of fans. We want the best in a Phantom movie. We want the man who has come to symbolize the role. Anything less mocks us and the rest of the movie/musical world. Please consider Michael Crawford as the lead in the film version of the "The Phantom of the Opera".

There was also an article in the Chicago Tribune a few weeks ago. But neither the TV show nor the newspaper article mentioned this website. The word must get out somehow that this website exists. Comments: I have written to Warner Brothers. I have written to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now, I'm here, singing the praises of the only true Phantom, Michael Crawford. Antonio Banderas as the Phantom? I don't think so! When I first heard that he was being considered, I thought it was a cruel (and not so funny) joke. Then I saw that clip on ET last night from ALW's 50th birthday party (held last year...though you'd never know it the way ET presented it as "news"). ET said that he "brought down the house". Sorry ET, it was Sarah Brightman who brought down the house. Antonio, on the other hand, sounded more like Ricky Ricardo than the Phantom. (No offense to the late, great Desi Arnaz...he was wonderful and his accent was a big part of HIS charm!) Let's face it, who is going to believe that someone hiding out in the bowels of the Paris Opera House is going to have a Spanish accent? I don't think so! And, Banderas's voice is SO WEAK. Didn't anyone learn anything from Evita? (At least the accent worked there). I have never been lucky enogh to see Michael as the Phantom, but I listen to the original soundtrack all the time and the man's voice and delivery always brings me to tears. I have seen Phantom a number of times, and am seeing it again in Toronto in April. Every "good" Phantom I have seen/heard seems to have modeled their performance after Michael Crawford. He DOES set the standard! I have been lucky enough to see him in concert. Every time he sings something from Phantom, the crowd erupts into cheers and there is a STANDING OVATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CONCERT. He brought me to tears again! He can act, and SING, rings around anyone else that might be considered for the role. MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!

Comments: Hi, I have followed this campaign with interest. Michael Crawford is the ONLY choice for Phantom. He made the part his own and the fact that he has spent the majority of the past few years in the States, added to the response by the American public, shows that the arguement that he would not be a big enough name is ridiculous. I have been a big fan of his since my childhood. I went to see him in 1983 in Barnum, and got the Phantom Soundtrack as soon as it came out. Unfortunatley I did not get the chance to see him perform Phantom live, and feel very upset and angry that the chance to see this on film would be denied. As far as Antinio Banderas goes, I'd like to draw everyone's attention to the birthday celebrations of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Mr Banderas sang "the Phantom of the Opera" with Sarah Brightman, he was an embarrasment, he was drowned out by Sarah, and showed that he does not have the correct command of the part. Phantom, the character is not a "musical singer's part" it is for someone with a stronger operatic vocal range, which is why Michael got the part in the first place. I hope that justice is done and if this film goes ahead it does so with the only person EVERYONE wants to see. What is the point of having a "heart-throb" in the role when he will be covered in difiguring laytex anyway!!?? Thankyou for letting me have my say, good luck with the campaign! much love, Kate. xxx

Comments: Last night on Entertainment Tonight they showed Lord Lloyd-Webber's birthday party celebration which was completely ruined, as far as I am concerned, by Antonio Bandaras singing Music of the Night. This feeling is supported by myself, Lynn Derczo, Debbi Gutierrez, Marie Morrison, Pat and Frank Suriani, Betty Heilbrun, Nancy and Dickson Alley, Nellie Hazzard, Charles and Kate Hazzard, and a lot of my other friends. There was Lord Lloyd Webber looking as happy as can be. If Sarah Brightman was there as Christine, why not Michael Crawford. Unbelievable. Lynne

WARNER has to be kidding to cast him at POTO. What a thin, ineffective voice, he could hardly be heard above Sarah and appeared to be so forcing and straining his voice, it was apparent that he could never do it on stage...he'd never stay the course. Since it is usually money that drives these people, why would they take such a foolhardy step as to cast such a hopeless substitute when they could have the best. I mean, DUH!!!!! Carole Brookfield

Comments: I saw on Entertainment Tonight a party that was given to Andrew Lloyd Webber. On stage were various artists singing the most popular songs from Webber's various plays, Glenn Close from Sunset Blvd., Donnie Osmond from Joseph & Amazing, Sarah Brightman singing from Phantom and much to my surprise Antonio Banderas singing from Phantom as well. WHERE WAS MICHAEL CRAWFORD????? Sarah sounded wonderful. On the other hand you could not hear Antonio sing any part of the song. When Sarah's part ended is when you heard Antonio. His voice WAS NOT DEEP ENOUGH and hearing the song with his slight accent did little justice to the song. I do not have anything against Antonio Banderas. I do believe to keep the original play as it was first presented over ten years ago, to bring joy to thousands of many people there is no other Phantom but MICHAEL CRAWFORD. Warner Bros. do not make a big mistake! Michael CRAWFORD is the one and only Phantom.

Comments: It is unthinkable that any other actor could portray The Phantom of the Opera other than Michael Crawford. It's like putting Kathie Lee Gifford in place of Sarah Brightman. Our image of the phantom is ONLY of Michael Crawford. Oh, and by the way, we have heard clips of the "wanna-be" mediterranean Antonio.........negative!!!! I am in full support of the action being taken. We just hope that Andrew Lloyd Webber would consider the sacredness of this film rather than the short-lived financial and notoriety that might come from a "hollywood" actor.

Comments: My feelings and deepest thoughts on this issue would take up much too much of your time. I am twenty-five years old and have been inspired by Michael Crawford for the past eleven years. Just like all of you, I can remember the first time I listened to that cast recording and the never-ending shivers that followed. I bought every album that came out. Every song he sang, I could apply to an experience in my life. I have a big heart and felt a kinship with Michael that I could not explain, and still cannot explain. He is not just a wonderful singer, he is a kind, generous, passionate individual who happens to have talent to boot. We are all frustrated and disappointed beyond belief over the whole movie casting. I, for the first time, felt defeated after I saw the clips on Entertainment Tonight of Banderas singing at Webber's birthday bash. I knew at that moment that the battle might be lost. But, I couldn't help but have this sense of pride, a pride which we all must feel that we care so much about something that we would do something that no one else has ever done. The battle is not over but I know, no matter what the outcome, that I just didn't sit by and do nothing. I said my peace and my heart can be lighter because of it. Thank you so very much for all that your organization does. I feel like you are my family, because I know if I saw any of you on the street, we could look in each other's eyes and know each other. Best of luck and I will keep informed. Matt Walkenbach

I know several people agree that they don't wish to see anyone else in this role. I agree,Eric would never have been so endearing if it were not for the passion, understanding, and depth of emotion poured into the character by Michael Crawford. Comments: Ok, I am totally against the whole idea of a Phantom of the Opera movie, because personally I think that the whole magic of the play will be totally ruined. Except on one condition, now if Michael Crawford was to be the Phantom, then it would be another story. Considering he is the Phantom, since he originated the role. I personally would rather see people who played the roles in the plays be in the movie than any big Hollywood name. I believe that they put their heart and soul into the roles they play, and that is exactly why everyone loves the play so much. The only reason why I am against the idea of the movie, is because I personally think that the whole storyline would be changed, to portray Erik in a whole diffrent light, where he would be a bad guy.

Comments: I think Andrew Lloyd Webber is crazy if he doesn't want the world's greatest Phantom, Michael Crawford, to appear in the movie. I have nothing against Antonio Banderas, he was an excellent Zorro, but only Michael can be in this movie. If Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton, all reprise the roles from Broadway, the movie will be a masterpiece, and will take home a number of Oscars. And I think these people are doing a wonderful job and have put in an enormous amount of effort in trying to get the man with the world's greatest voice, to star in what could be the greatest musical movie since The Sound of Music. So, in conclusion, Michael Crawford has now given a message about this movie idea to ALW: "I gave you my music .... made your song take wing .... and now, how you've repaid me: denied me and betrayed me!" Vote for Michael Crawford!

Comments: I agree that michael Crawford should play the role of the Phantom in the movie. He has something special that no other actor could have and this specific role needs the special touch. I feel that placing a top Hollywood actor in the role would spoil the illusion as the audience will be going to see the movie because of the leading man and not to appreciate the story behind it all. However great the american actor may be we all still know that Mr.Crawford is the best and will do the movie justice. I just want to say that there are a lot of people who will back Michael all the way and it would be a shame to lose support from so many Phantom of the Opera fans. I hope they think through this carefully and choose the best option as it will make the movie a huge success.

Michael Crawford, indeed, should receive his Tony winning role back. I heard others actors sing from The Phantom of the Opera, but none captured my heart as Michael Crawford does. His emotion when acting as the ghost, Erik, is breath taking. Mr. Crawford was destined to star as the Phantom on stage. And, after receiving such praise and attention for his performance he should slip his mask back on and become the ghost again. Many people who have not an interest in musical theater can only associate major roles with major characters. When I saw Michael Crawford this summer on his tour I told many of my friends how I enjoyed the concert. They didn't quite recognize the name of the performer, so I told them that he played the Phantom. Now, that made sense to them. Michael Crawford will always be known as the Phantom. All the reason for him to play " his " role so many will get a chance to see the man known as the Phantom of the Opera.

Comments: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE have THE PHANTOM made into a movie/video,--with MR. MICHAEL CRAWFORD. I absolutely LOVE the story of THE PHANTOM; I have seen the production, but never with Michael Crawford as THE PHANTOM. Due to a very tight income, as well as mobility difficulties, I have been unable to travel to : London; New York; Broadway,--as much as I would LOVE TO. THE PHANTJM REIGNS SUPREME!!!! -- Please make this world a much better place by having THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA filmed, so that people like me (and believe me; there are MANY of us) CAN experience the stage production in all itsbeauty.--- Thank You,--Jaime.

Comments: Whats the status of this Phantom movie anyway? I heard that Antonio Banderas had definatly been cast? I may be wrong..? ************************************* Hi James! Actually there are two rumors on this. The first broke in The Daily Variety January 18th edition. It stated that Shekhar Kapur was in talks with Webber to direct the film as an upcoming project, but only if Webber "can abide Kapur's desire to interpret his cherished musical by taking creative liberties." The stars are rumored to be Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Then just a few days later, while Webber was rumored to be in the Los Angeles Area, The London Daily Telegraph Newspaper, January 23 edition announced that Webber had put the movie on hold and the next project would be bringing Aspects of Love to the big screen. The truth more than likely lies with both of these stories at this point. As far as Banderas actually being signed, the ONLY people who have ever announced this or have confirmed that he signed have been HIS people. RUG keeps saying that he is the frontrunner, and from what we understand, Warner Bros. has stopped taking calls. Lucky for the campaign, by postponing the movie "Phantom" it gives us time to reach more people and to do our best to convince Lord Lloyd-Webber that this is not the film version that people want to see. This movie needs to be filmed with integrity and it needs to star the ORIGINAL Phantom, Tony Award winning Michael Crawford. Hope this helped! Thank you for signing our guestbook.

He is the phantom. My husband and I watched him on PBS and were amazed at how he almost physically changed when he stepped into the role of the phantom. No one now or ever could do it better.

I even wrote to him for awhile and recieved letters back. There is no doubt in my mind that Michael is 'The Phantom' and I think that he should therefore be in the video. I think that ALW has it in his head to anyone that is not English or an original inn videos like the casting for Joseph video for example Donny Osmond???? enough said I think. Love Tanith

Why do producers feel that because they have a "big name" in the lead, their show will be a bigger success. I saw Michael Crawford in Barnum and am fully convinced that he is the only man for the part.

Comments: I believe that a sequel would only spell disaster for POTO. Not only do I think it would not do very well at the theater, I feel that the bad publicity could possibly hurt the musical now playing around the world (example-someone might not have any interest in seeing the first one if the second unimpressed them). I feel the only way to capture that magic that has been felt by theatergoers around the world is to put an actor in a role that he fully is capable of doing and fully understands. I think that there is only one man for that job...Michael Crawford. I know that he would do it in a heartbeat. That role spoke to him as no other has and possibly ever will. You can see it in his face in interviews (example-Bravo Profiles on the Bravo channel). The man was born for this part. I know that when "Evita" came out, several people voiced the same doubts we all are voicing now, and I admit that I did enjoy the movie version of "Evita".The difference is is that Madonna was cast not because of past acting achievements, but because she looked the part and could sing well enough. I do believe that a singer should be cast in a musical, not an actor. That is why Yul Brynner was cast in "The King and I". I love Audrey Hepburn, but look what happened when she was cast in "My Fair Lady" instead of the original Julie Andrews. Her voice had to be dubbed and she was very upset. I would love to see the sequel to POTO, but only with the worthiest of people, and I just don't believe that Antonio Banderas has earned that priveledge-acting and certainly vocally-as of yet. I would love to talk to fellow "PHANS". Please e-mail me if there are any Phantom Phan chat rooms we can all discuss the movie in. Thanks!! :)

He gave me a great gift in the music that I found through him. We both are great fans. I have cd's and video's of Mr. Crawford's and watch for him all the time. I guess it was love at second sight. It was a surprise to discover that this was the same man who played Cornelius in Hello Dolly. He is the best of this century.

Comments: I am so pleased to find a page like this. Ever since I had heard that they were making a movie of POTO, I thought that Michael Crawford should be cast. It deeply saddens me that they would even consider casting someone else in this role. He should have been the first and only person considered. I know many fans (and Phans) of the show that would never even think twice about going to see the movie if someone else were to be cast in what we think of being 'his' role. This movie will not benefit from a big-name movie star who cannot accurately portray the Phantom. It can, however, benefit from having someone who knows the role and has the emotional intensity and singing ability to make this movie work--After all, the Phantom is supposed to have "the voice of an angel"--Please cast someone, namely Michael Crawford, who can live up to that standard. Thank you.

Comments: I was fortunate enough to have seen Phantom here in LA 16 times. (mortgaged the house) (G) I saw Michael Crawford in it several times as well as all the other actors who performed the part. Altho I greatly enjoyed the others, there was just noone like Michael Crawford who could play the Phantom like he could. And I don't believe there is anyone who could play it as well as he could in the movie version either. Years ago Warner Bros..... you took out an ad in the Hollywood Reporter announcing the making of LOTD... I am STILL waiting. At that time there was no question as to who would play the part of the Phantom. So what has changed? I am deeply saddened that you would consider any one else. If he's not available right now, well we've waited this long...... we can wait abit longer to get the very BEST... and that would be Michael Cawford and noone else. Please don't make the fatal mistake of casting anyone else. It would be very sad to see this magnificent story on film go down the tubes due to your error. Sadly.. I fear that's what would happen as *I* for one would NOT see it without Michael in it. Please think carefully before doing something so devastating. Thanking you in advance for making a wise choice and HUGS!!!!! Munchie

She and my father had gone to see POTO in L.A., and came back raving (well, my mother moreso than my dad). Comments: My husband and I both agree that you should cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom, not only for the name recognition, but because he is the one and ONLY TRUE Phantom. We think that WB would be making a HUGE mistake to cast anyone other than Michael in this part. Michael Crawford, in essence, defined this role. To be fair, after reading the letter that WB sent, we understand that there can be complications within the process of casting, etc. Therefore, if Michael Crawford is NOT able to play the role (for reasons unknown to anyone), then why isn't another stage actor cast? A good example would be Davis Gaines, who has played the Phantom in over 13,000 performances throughout the US. Please don't get us wrong. We truly believe in our hearts that Michael is meant for the role -- even Andrew Lloyd Webber knows that, why else would he have made that special call to Michael when he was first casting the parts in the Original London Production? Who is WB to say otherwise? We also agree with a person who wrote in to Entertainment Weekly. The movie is big enough for both Michael and Antonio. Why not re-evaluate? Then WB would have the best of both worlds -- a HUGE Broadway name as well as a HUGE Hollywood name. Imagine the revenue that they would rake in then? (Not that I particularly care about that aspect, but that seems to be the focus for the Executives -- go figure). Besides, can anyone imagine a Spanish Phantom? Sounds a little strange to us..... I got the original soundtrack and I've listened to it a thousand times, and I think that it is fair that the original cast should play the roles in the film. Recently I've listened Antonio Banderas on the radio singing the main title, 'The Phantom Of The Opera', and it's not the same by far. Comments: Hello,   I would like to add my voice to the campaign to have Michael Crawford star as the Phantom in a movie.  I saw the Phantom with another actor playing the part of the Phantom.  Then I had the privilege of seeing Michael sing the parts.  There was no comparison!  I know that many people were never able to see Michael Crawford play the part of the Phantom.  This would be a very special way that millions of people could see the play the way that it was meant to be.   With Disney's quality of movie work and Michael Crawford's acting and singing it would be a smash hit.  Everyone would come out a winner.  Disney would make millions (so would Michael Crawford) and the general public would be treated to a spectacle beyond compare.  Maybe we could even get the youth of today interested in some quality music. (Of course you realize that I am not that old!)  Wouldn't the world be a better place with some good music?   I would be one of the first in line to see this movie!  To think that where ever you sat in the theatre you would have a good seat.  What a wonderful thing. If this ever comes to pass you will make millions very happy.   Sincerely, Nancy Haley

Comments: Dearest Phantom Phans ,
Today marks the first day that I step out from the shadows to voice my oppinion . For two years now I have been a phan of 'The Phantom of the Opera' and for two years I have always thought of 'Michael Crawford' as the PHANTOM .
Michael Crawford puts something into the part of the PHANTOM that no HOLLYWOOD studmuffin could ever duplicate in his lifetime . To put someone else in the roll of the PHANTOM would be suicide to the show it's self .
Although Mr. Travolta and Mr. Banderas are two very gifted actor/singers . . . . I could never see them as THE PHANTOM . They fall short of : the POWER , the ENERGY , the CHARISMA , and the SOUL that Michael Crawford gives HIS character .
I'm sorry but if Mr. Travolta or Mr. Banderas were playing the role , I'd expect the phantom at any moment to breakout into 'Greaselightning' or pull a 'semi-automatic rifle' from behind the organ and waste Raoul .
I'd rather spend MY MONEY (i have a choice you know) to see MICHAEL CRAWFORD AS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA .
I'm not afraid to say it . I am only 16 and Michael Crawford is very appealing to me and my friends .

Love , Light & Energy to you all
Emma
