Michael Crawford's performance is forever embedded in our minds and hearts. We never tire of his music on CD's at home or in the car. The personal apperances we've seen remind us of the love we have for the broadway play. The movie without Mr. Crawford would just be another remake and not "The Phantom"! Sincerely. |

He has got the singing, acting, and gestures down. He has proved himself to be the best before and he can do it again. His countless awards are evidence of this. The Phantom Of The Opera would not be the same without the original phantom. |

Antonio Banderas, won't go saying anything about his acting skills because he is good in his job, but a part like Phantom needs more than a name and a face. Michael Crawford, an experienced singer and actor who has done over 1,300 performances in Phantom should be considered before any Hollywood star, because of his talent and expertise and knowledge of the part. Crawford created the part from very little and he knows perhaps most about the part than anyone else. So please, people, think of what you cast, voices should come before faces! |

Even though he's 57 years old, I'm sure that he would be as great as he was in 1986. It's only right. I probably wouldn't boycott the movie if Michael Crawford didn't star in it, only because I'm obsessed with Phantom of the Opera ! I would tell my friends not to see it if he didn't star in it. Sarah Brightman should probably play Christine too, so the don't let madonna or Barbra Strisand to play her. They would star in it just for the publicity, but Sarah would do it because she IS Christine Daae. |

This role was created by Mr. Crawford. It was through Michael Crawford's expertise that the character came to life. This man's extraordinary vocal abities truely qualifies him to undertake this role again. Unlike the suggested lead at this time. If Michael Crawford in the end, is not selected, then millions of POTO fans will boycott this film. It is quite simple. No tickets purchased equals a flop! Which, I am sure it will be, with the "liberties" that will be taken not only from the original actor being left out, to the director's whims of artistic change. Perhaps we fans will never know why this decision was reached by Warner's and ALW...but you will feel our distain for this unforgivable act of STUPIDITY! |

I don't want this wonderful story to be too Hollywood. If WB thinks that Bandaras is right for the role they are overestimating his talent. They are marketing the movie to the younger age group, obviously. Those who have taste and appreciation for art would rather spend their time and money on real talent. |

His performance was exquisite, beconing emotion from the entire audience as he proceeded through the complicated plot of the play. Please seriously consider and re-consider whom best fits this part and who will draw the largest audience. Many people have missed the opportunity to see him play this renowned role, and should be willing to pay to see it. If he IS cast in this role, I know I WILL see it in the theater and would be in line to purchase my videotape copy whenever it is released. Don't let this opportunity slip away to permanently immemorialize this great actor in the role designed for him. |

| Name: Stanton Selby Website: The Altar of Ainge Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Vermont Time: 1999-01-20 08:08:04 Comments: I am in full support of your efforts to have Michael Crawford play the lead in the Phantom Movie. The idea of Banderas or anyone else of that ilk playing the part is farcical. It would perhaps be a bit different if they had picked some other actor who had previously played the part to be the Phantom (though Crawford will always remain the obvious choice), but seeing Antonio Banderas' name associated with this project makes me laugh first, then it makes me mad that the producers believe that we will just flock to this movie like sheep because we have some zealous loyalty toward Andrew Lloyd Weber. I assure you, Warner Brothers, we do not. To the studio, I say if you make an awful movie production of this great musical (which is a given if you choose the role based on how popular the actor is in Hollywood right now), we will stay away from this movie. There will be a great cry in all of "Warner Brother's-dom," such as there has never been seen or ever will be again. There will be weeping and knashing of teeth by the studio executives because they will have wasted millions of dollars on rubbish-- the most odorous and contemptuous film ever offered before the public (including the Pauly Shore filmography!). Frankly, I hope the total failure of this movie to garner more than $10 in box office receipts bankrupts the whole studio. May Warner Brothers studio executives spend their next lives as slug excrement if they dare to disgrace the name of "Phantom of the Opera" by casting anyone but Michael Crawford in the lead role. |

Every mention of "Phantom of the Opera" to musical fans and non-musical fans who have seen the play or simply heard the recording always brings an immediate positive comment on Michael Crawford. It almost seems that POTO is remembered for Michael Crawford rather than the other way around. A movie would provide an opportunity for those who missed the original play because of their locale or their age to experience this performance which has become so well regarded. If a movie is made, there simply is no reason to consider using any other performer in the lead role and hoping they will be able to perform when the audiences who know this kind of music have already expressed both in the theaters and in the record stores that Michael Crawford is indeed the voice of the Phantom. |

What ever happened to making movies simply for the art of making movies? The story of Phantom is a magical, beautiful story that can't be told by your average Joe Schmoe with a $10 million dollar salary just because he has a pretty face. The people who are going to see this movie eight or nine times (You know, like people saw Titanic) are going to be those who love it in its stage form. But we'll only do that if there's a Phantom we like. And we're very numerous. |

| Name: Jan Bachman Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 1999-01-13 12:36:55 Comments: I have been a performing musician (trumpet player) for musicals going on 30 years now. I have played for the known and the unknown and think I understand the way the character and the right actor bonds. In the 70 some odd musicals I have been involved with over the years I could probably count ten where there was a marriage of all actors and their characters. Rarely did I see a new person take over an established role and change it from the originator's characterization. What that means is we often get a warmed over rendition of the originator's work. Once in a while it actually is a melding that takes place after a period of time. Usually it makes you wish the originator had never left. If Mr. Crawford feels he does not want to take himself out of the running and the producers feel they do want a hit rather than a miss, the logical thing is to give the part to its originator. The originator always does the most mining of the character. That originator should, if they are very competent, understand the character best. I teach students aged 11 to 14 in a public school when I am not playing. These children know when they have been touched by a real performance or been exposed to a copy. They rarely like musicals when they enter my classes, and rarely dislike them when they leave. They create their own characters and learn how to portray honesty. I feel Mr. Crawford, since he is willing and still interested should play the role of the Phantom in any movie. Few people will believe anyone else in the role at this point unless it was a whole new characterization. Thank you for your time. |

Michael was the very first Phantom and as such created this role from scratch - all other Phantom's have been copies of his original. Although I never saw him play the part on stage I have the original cast recording and am positive that he is the man for the role in the film. I saw Dave Willets play the part on stage and, although he was brilliant, I really do want to see Michael playing it in the film to see how he really did it. I have seen Michael on stage in Barnum and he was marvellous - I just know he would bring to the film everything it needs. Keep up the good work and I do hope you are successful. |

And of course, would never be able to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Who else could BE THE Phantom, but Michael Crawford? I don't think having anyone else play the part, would bring enough people out to come see it as a movie. Unless Michael Crawford was in it, it would not draw a crowd, and I most certainly would not go see the movie with anyone but Michael playing the Phantom. It just wouldn't be the same. I think on Broadway, other people could come along and play the part, but not so in the movie. I hope this gets passed along to the people who decide this. I have been wondering why it's been taking so long to get this movie going with Michael Crawford as the PHANTOM! |

We have never seen Michael. We have seen some very able Phantoms -yet we both still feel we have NEVER seen the show at its best, with Michael Crawford. We still find ourselves comparing each Phantom with Michael's Original Cast Recording and the times we have been priviledged to see Michael in concert. There is not one that even comes close. Antonio Banderas simply does not have the voice to carry this role. And let's face it The Phantom IS his voice since he is hidden under layers of latex anyway. Banderas as Raoul is a better choice. The role does not call for as great a vocal range or the face obscuring makeup that will upset those who come specifically to see him anyway. MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE PHANTOM. NO OTHER PERSON IS ACCEPTABLE IN THIS ROLE. |

I Live in Wellington New Zealand and I have just read an interview with Melanie Griffith about how she doesn't want to get pregnant to Antonio Bandreas because she "is not to keen on following him around all his locations for the filming of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA".!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Can someone PLEASE put my mind at rest and tell me that this is not true. The article also said that co-stars had not being chosen yet. |

First of all...he originated the role and second of all, time wouldn't have to be wasted trying to train someone else to be as good as him. This is a great page, and I sincerely hope that Michael does get chosen to reprise his role as the Phantom. |

However, the phantom is arguably THE most important character in the musical. How can this role be toyed with and gambled on by using an actor who is untested for the role? Crawford has proved, beyond a doubt, that HE can play the phantom. |

Crawford IS the Phantom - no one else could play the role like he can. Casting someone else would be like putting Ellen Digenerus (sp) in the role of Mary Poppins. Do what you know to be the right thing - cast Crawford in HIS role. The box office will thank you for it! |

That's Michael Crawford. Michael IS the Phantom! To cast anyone else in that role would be a disservice to the play as well as the public. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see Michael in the play know the extent of his talent and how he, literally, turns himself into the character. Those unfortunate people who didn't see him should be given the opportunity to experience this amazing performance through the movie version. It is something they won't soon forget. I saw Michael in the play twice and have attended his concerts in New York and New Jersey. Each time he sings his songs from Phantom the audience just goes wild. There is only one Michael Crawford and only one person who can play the Phantom. They are one and the same! |

Get someone with a voice, it is a movie with sound. This musical is about music not good looks. |
| Name: Tracy Gaulton Website: Referred by: Net Search From: New Jersey Time: 1999-01-08 15:28:03 Comments: I am a 30 year old mother of two, who has seen many Broadway shows (including Phantom) over the years. I enjoyed Phantom, thought the staging and costumes were amazing, and the music was beautiful. Unfortunately, I did not get to see it while Michael Crawford was still performing. Then I heard a CD of the show that included Crawford. I didn't understand why the music hadn't seemed so great when I was in the theater, hearing it in person. Then I saw Michael Crawford perform some of the songs from Phantom in a concert, and I was moved to tears (not a common thing for me). The last movie I saw was A Bug's Life, before that was The Little Mermaid re-release, and before that, Muppet Treasure Island. I can't remember the last "grown-up" movie I saw that wasn't rented and watched at home. If, indeed, Antonio Banderas (or some other "hot" star) plays the Phantom when Crawford is available and willing to take on the role, I will be waiting until it's out on videotape before I see it. But if someone (anyone!?!) has the sense to have the best man for the job do the job, I will be willing, no happy, even excited, to hire a babysitter ($12-$15) and spend $15 on tickets to see the movie in a theater. I just can't believe anyone with ears that work would pass on Crawford if he wants to be the Phantom again. |

Even now, on his concert tour, he still shows the same unsurpassed emotion through both his voice, and his character. There could never be a singer or actor that could match or even come close to his ability to make his audience believe that he REALLY IS the Phantom. Why wouldn't he be the ONLY choice for the movie?? It wouldn't be the same without him, and I, as well as everyone else I know, wouldn't waste my time or money on a poor imitiation of the real thing!! |

If Hollywood needs a "big star's name" to draw an audience (they seem to think that they do) let Banderas play Raul!! |

No comparison! Crawford & Brightman cannot be matched by ANYONE! I can only say that I'm fortunate to have witnessed the two best performers/voices one could hope to experience in a lifetime! A movie will never duplicate that, whether or not Crawford & Brightman are cast in it. |
| Name: Lynn Merusi Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: New Jersey Time: 1999-01-07 11:25:59 Comments: First of all I would like to say that I read about your campaign in the Star Ledger newspaper which was not an option to chose from in your How did you find us? question. Well now on to the campaign issue... I have often found Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals to be the most magnificnt melodious pieces of works there are. When he opens a broadway play he casts the best and utterly most perfect person for those roles. They bring the magic of their talent and voices to the stage. Owning any original musical score will tell you that. When the original actor/actress must move on and a replacement steps in then it becomes second best. Given the fact that Mr. Crawford's talents do not end with his unbelievable voice I would hope that the movie industry would certainly consider him a prospective choice. I have found him to be witty, charming, funny, dramatic, and well capable of handling the movie role of the Phantom, the role that he perfected! I also felt that Patti Lupone would have been the choice for Evita. I understand box office draw and all and feel it is probably more political and money-making in nature to have a current movie star in this part as in Evita, but think how much better the overall message would be to present to the people who loved the original play and score the best performance on a movie level. That would mean casting Michael Crawford in the leading part. Antonio Banderas is a great actor but for this part there is only one Phantom..... Please Warner Brothers choose the only man that can wear that mask to perfection : Michael Crawford! |

I saw your NOvember ad in the "Variety" publication. Firstly, allow me to compliment you on your advertisement. You can't imagine my surpise to open it up and see it there! This is a first class and very read publication in LA and I applaud your efforts greatly! My family and I also have grieved the announcements that Antonio Banderas seems to been signed to the role. We had the honor (for an honor it was)to live Michael Crawford's performance as the Phantom several times in LA. As most of you would agree, I can't even fathom him not doing the movie. It is most disturbing. |

Let Antoneo play Raoul. He doesn' t have the maturity or compassion for such a role. Michael defined the role and has such a rare sensitivity in his singing voice that you can't help but feel for the Phantom. He is the reason for the millions of sales of the C.D. You already have a world wide audience. When people hear the phantom sing they want to hear the voice they hear on the C. D. Let's have the real phantom and create a movie that will be a classic. |
