Comments: Michael Crawford created and perfected the character of the Phantom during his 1300 performances. No one else should have the opportunity to film this musical version. It's Michael's, and he has waited an awfully long time to have his performance made into a movie so everyone has the chance to see and hear him. When one thinks of the "Phantom," it's Michael Crawford's name who is always mentioned. Please, Warner Brothers, reconsider.

Comments: I was here before a long time ago, but I am sorry to see things have not changed. People, I read these posts and I want to cry. Sob. Very hard. Then I want to wring some necks. Reading these posts is emotionally harder than watching the Phantom!!! What are we going to do?! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO??????!!!! Obviously, ALW is NOT listening, and WB is not listening, and nobody has any new news. I can't find anything...except a nasty new rumor that the contract has been *officially* signed by Antonio Banderas. Oh no no no no no....somebody e-mail me with news I can trust!! PLEASE, OH PLEASE THEY HAVE TO GIVE US MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!!!!

Comments: So many people have commented eloquently why Michael Crawford deserves to be the Phantom over Hollywood hopefuls who can't fill the bill. I can only reinterate what they have said. The role of the Phantom belongs to the man who originated it, created the character and is, in a large proportion, responsible for the musical's great success. Michael Crawford gave a beautifully emotionally moving performance that won awards such as the Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk and others. He won a legion of dedicated fans and many more admirers all over the world. He has proven on his concert tour this year that he can still sing the music with the same passion and intensity he did originally, if not more because he has honed his abilities even more over time. He is the right age chronologically for the role and in this era of the mature hero on the movie screens he has this as a plus in his corner as well. In the long and short of it he is the perfect choice, why look to anyone else? He is interested in doing the role, and with the proper script, director and appropriate promotion he can and will make this the greatest musical movie of all times. What more can one say?

Comments: Other actors have played the role of the Phantom on the stage and done a good job, but I believe that there is only one appropriate choice for the film: Michael Crawford. He won't just do a good job, he will do a wonderful job. He originated the role, and his singing and acting abilities have only improved in the time that has passed since then. If one of the film actors rumored to have a lock on the film role is cast, Warner Brothers will lose the opportunity to bill their production as "The Phantom of the Opera, Starring the Original Phantom, Michael Crawford!"

Comments: How many times does ALW & WB have to be told who to cast in this role? Michael Crawford! I had heard years ago that Michael would be doing the movie and I have waited PATIENTLY for this to happen. Earlier this year, I was driving my car to work when the radio DJ reported that "someone else" was going to play the lead. I just about drove my car off the road! My first though was "What about Michael?" Then a search for POTO sites lead me here (By the way, this is a great website! I visit here often. I admire and respect what you are trying to accomplish here and hope you are successful.) I have been reading the info here for a while (and getting quite upset at times) but hadn't signed your guestbook, until now. I have sent letters and will send more shortly. I would love to see Michael in this movie. I worry that this may not happen and that is why I'm voicing my protest. The difference between Michael playing this role and someone else doing it is the difference between me being at the box office on opening day (and probably several more days) and my possibly not making it to the movie theater at all. If Hollywood handles this correctly, POTO could be so spectacular! I don't believe that casting a Hollywood "face" in the lead is the correct way to handle this movie. You have another choice for the Phantom - MICHAEL CRAWFORD! He can really SING like an Angel of Music. Some people have said it's like he has the soul of the Phantom. I believe it! I'm always impressed in his interviews by his passion and the connection he feels for this role. I hope and pray that you will listen to what people are trying to tell you. MICHAEL CRAWFORD FOR PHANTOM!!!!!

Comments: The Phantom of the Opera is a mind-blowing musical. Michael Crawford is a mind-blowing actor. Together, they can create a mind-blowing movie. The fact that anyone other than Mr. Crawford is being considered for the movie role, much less a couple of vocal feather weights, is mind-BOGGLING! Let me start with the two main knocks on Mr. Crawford. First, the insane idea that he is too old. Having read the book a couple of times, the fact that the Phantom is in his fifties is fairly obvious. Lo and behold, Michael Crawford fits the age critereon perfectly! Oh yes, and the other problem with Mr. Crawford, the notion that he is not sexy enough to generate box office appeal. Being male, I cannot judge his sex appeal, but as a subscribe to the Michael Crawford mailing list, I can say that the ladies like him. Also in with box office appeal is the thought that he will not be like by the teenage audience as much as a Bandaras or a Travolta. I'm 18, and I attend the University of Alabama, not exactly the musical theatre capital of the world. However, even there, there are numerous people who believe that only Michael Crawford can play the part in the movie. Incidentally, most of the people that were pro-Bandaras at first wanted to wretch when they heard him sing the title song from the show. Well now, if anyone is still unconvinced, I invite you to email me for a clip of Mr. Bandaras' singing, and then you will understand how the casting of Mr. Bandaras is a joke. The stage production makes money because people go and see it over and over time and again at prices that reach into the $70 range. If the movie is well done, how many people will go to see it at $6.50? If I like it, I will go and see it over and over and over until it closes, and when it does close, I'll be one of the first to own the video. Fair warning though, I will only like the movie if Michael Crawford is allowed to reprise his stage role. GIVE ME MICHAEL CRAWFORD, OR GIVE ME DEATH!

Comments: To those of you reading this that are involved in this campaign, you know the story, and there is no reason to read on. For those new to the website and the campaign, I am asking for your help. There are people that have worked many hours on this campaign. Alot of their own time and their own money. Please assist those of us that want Michael as the Phantom to make this a dream come true. Please help us to make Michael the one that wears the mask on the big screen. There is no other actor/singer that could perform this part. Michael Crawford is the Phantom and we are his phans. We will do anything in our power to get him this part. Please, write to the addresses on this page, call your friends and tell them about this page, give them the addresses. Do what you can! We cannot allow someone to play this part just because they are a big name. The name will not make the part, the man will make the part, and that man IS MICHAEL CRAWFORD!

Comments: The thought of a movie version of Phantom is a bit disappointing, due to the fact that it will talk away the "theatre atmospere". What's even more disappointing, however, is the fact that no known phantom has been considered for the lead role. Michael Crawford is, for most phans, the obvious choice, even though there are others (i.e Franc D'ambrosio). To cast a role like phantom with someone like Banderas or Travolta just to bring in the money is absurd. Please, bring in a true phantom for the phans who are so devoted.

Comments: Bravo to all of you who have put your heart and soul, not to mention time, into this campaign. To the powers that be, I am one of those Phantom Phans who cannot even imagine why you would be considering someone other than *the* Phantom, Michael Crawford. He is the one who gave life and breath to the Andrew Lloyd Webber interpretation of Gaston Leroux's timeless character and his name is synonymous with the Phantom. For those of us who love the story and the character, please, do right by the story and the generations to come. Make the Phantom movie something to be proud of by casting the only logical choice in the title role... Michael Crawford.

Comments: Michael Crawford! Nobody, but NOBODY else is the Phantom. Crawford created him, possesses him, respects him, embodies him (litereally!). WARNER BROTHERS!!! You've had a string of failures. You want to rescue your studio from the ditch? Figure the odds...if you let Mr. C recreate his legendary performance you will automatically start out ahead because film critics, Phantom fans, and worldwide musical fans will approve. Use ANYONE else, and you'll start off with those people against you and will have to overcome a deficit. It's like starting off down by three touchdowns at kickoff. Sure you can still win, but it will be a struggle and the odds are against you. A TV special on now is called "The Warner Bros Story: No Guts, No Glory". Show your guts! Do the right thing and let MC do the movie. Odds are you'll have a hit. Just do it!........................Sincerely, Wulfie

Comments: Although I never was able to see Michael Crawford in the production, Phantom of the Opera, I have seen him in concert when he would perform music from POTO. His charisma, his talent is awesome, and it was then I realized how extremely powerful he was as the Phantom. I always anticipated the time when I could finally see him in the movie. And when I heard that Antonio Banderas was heading up the list for POTO, the movie, I was dismayed. Banderas may be handsome, but that's all. He does NOT have the caliber of talent that Crawford has. The movie will be weak, to say the least. I hope that those who are in power will reconsider their shallow decision in order to present POTO as the wonderful piece of art that it is meant to be, by using the finest artists available (including Michael Crawford), instead of relying on cheap commercial gimmicks --- that is, pretty boy with no talent -- just watch Evita...you'll see!

Comments: First of all, Diane Flogerzi, let me say thanks to you for creating this website, and to those who have helped you expand the scope of the Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign so much in such a short time. Surely all of this hard work and devotion have not gone unnoticed by the decision makers at Warner Bors. Their silence doesn't mean they can ignore the fact that Michael Crawford has one of the most devoted fan followings of any performer active today...nor can Andrew Lloyd Webber or anyone involved in this film with him. They all may wish this campaign didn't exist because it threatens the wisdom of their decision making, but we are here, we are loyal, and we won't go away! Most of all, we hold the key to the success of the Phantom movie and they know it. To them I say: We're calling your bluff. Promises were made, not just to a certain actor, but to those who love and support him. If you break your promise to him, you break it to the countless thousands of people who have been waiting for the fulfillment of that promise. And we will not let you forget it! If Michael Crawford is not allowed to recreate his triumph as the Phantom of the Opera for the world to treasure for all time on film, there isn't a shred of honor left in Andrew Lloyd Webber, the executives of his companies, or anyone in the upper echelons of Warner Bros. When the critics heap ridicule on the film, the composer, the leading actor, and the studio...and the public stays away from the box office...don't feign surprise. You've had adequate warning and your arrogance will come back to haunt you. Once again, Diane, thanks so much. You have the undying gratitude of all Michael's fans. I've felt honored to be a small part of this.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the only one to play the Phantom. He originated the role and should play it. Mr. Banderas may be a talented actor, but he does not have the voice nor the charisma that Mr. Crawford has. The movie will definitely flop if anybody other than Mr. Crawford gets the role, as the movie "Evita" flopped. I urge Warner Brothers to definitely reconsider their plans.

I also know that from the first time I read the novel, "The Phantom of the Opera," I loved the fact that although Erik had the face of a monster, his voice was that of an angel's. I encourage careful consideration to be made as to who is cast as the Phantom-if he cannot sing as Erik sang, then I for one will not consider seeing the film.

Comments: I guess it's time to sign in. I've been in the group for quite a while now, I just never had the time to stop and leave a note. Michael really made an impression on me through his PBS concert. He really can touch your heart. Although I never saw Michael's Phantom in London, NY or LA. I know him like a know my brother. I did some research on both the Phantom and Michael, read everything I could get my hands on. Thirty year old books in library basement to whatever I could find on the Internet. Easter Sunday, I read a tiny snippet in the Sunday Record that ALW had offered AB the role in the POTO Movie. By chance, Evita was on that afternoon and I did not have to wait long to know this was a monumental mistake. To have that voice, be the voice of MOTN forever, on film. I was actually angry thinking about all the work Michael had done to enhance the image of a disfigured, homicidal sociopath into a Broadway heart-throb and checked himself out of the hospital to perform in pain when his understudy was injured. All that loyalty, win the Tony, keep the music alive and for what. So that alw could give his pseudomorph to that cutiepie, ******* ********. I was making phone calls and writing letter, some not too nice. For someone I had never met. It just wasn't right. There's no honor, art for art means nothing. It's just the almighty buck. Almost everyone else said, well that's just the way it is these days. Everyone except the people here. Here everyone knows it happens and everyone knows its wrong. This time we're telling other people. It's the same as voting. If you don't vote you lose your bitching rights for the next four year. Sometimes you have to dig your heels in and say enough. I feel good about this, whether it works or not, WE DID THE RIGHT THING. I think we're going to surprise alot of people.

Comments: There is a story here to be told. Next Monday on November 16th an ad will appear in Variety Magazine. It will support a man to be cast in a movie that was to be a record of his legendary performance and a gift to all to pass down through time. He, his fans and the world were promised this record and have been cheated due to the greediness, ugliness and politics of Hollywood. We were sold out by the story's creator, he in search of wealth and fame, abandoned loyalty, principles and art somewhere along the way. In 1990 we along with Michael Crawford were promised a movie, we waited for years and I feel personally betrayed by the man and playwright whom I have always loyally supported. I think back now in reflection of my own journey. Nine months ago, I was first told of the news that THE Phantom, my Phantom, was no longer being considered for this film. To say that I took the news badly at this point in time is a vast understatement. Those who know me best know that for all these months I have worked as hard as any person can for a cause that they believe in. And I believe in Michael Crawford. In all my life there has never been another performer whom I have seen that comes close to the performance I viewed of him as the Phantom that long ago Saturday matinee in October of 1990. It was an honor that I will never forget. The journey since April of this year to now has been long, difficult and at times even painful. I started my first small, initial web page with the help of my husband Steve, whom I love, adore and thank for all of his support and help in my efforts to accomplish my dream. Along the way I have been joined by many, many others whose dedication to this cause have been as strong, loyal and steadfast as my own. Together we have watched this web site grow, a true labor of love, heartfelt, honest, sincere and strong, a testament and reflection of the heart of the man himself whom we all support. Next Monday, our ad, paid for by his supporters, designed, written and conceived with love and dedication will call out to those within his industry that this man is the choice of the fans to star as the Phantom in the upcoming film, The Phantom of the Opera. What the ad accomplishes is not the only goal. What HAS happened is that now there will be a record for history that people were willing to give extra effort, energy, and personal time for the chance to have this man give the performance of his lifetime on film to the world, and to make their voices be heard. Michael, you may not get this opportunity, it may pass us all by. Just know that your fans support you and the legend of what you gave will never die. Your voice is there for all to hear and feel, your concerts are recorded for all time and you are cherished in the hearts of all those fortunate to kneel along your path. Next Monday when the Variety ad comes out to show the world how much you are supported, remember also how much you are loved, by all your fans, the members of this campaign, and by me. All my love to you, Diane

Comments: I do not think that any one else beside Michael Crawford would be suited to play the Phantom in the movie version. First of all, he is the original Phantom...and it would seem only just that he, as well as the rest of the original cast should be a part of it. Not only that, Michael knows what it takes to play the part, and puts all of his energy into it. In a recent interview he related how much singing "The Music of the Night" takes; it takes all the emotion possible to sing it....it is a great cry of love.....and in the end Micheal was left speechless for he could not continue, the emotions of the song had overwhelmed him at that point. Also, he knows his character ---he stated that he had a ritual everynight before going on the stage. The overture was just like the anthem to him and he would stand up and look at himself in the mirror and say "That is the man, and that is his music. Now I'm ready to go out and start......I feel terriffic compassion for Erik...and that cry that he makes in the end..." Micheal Crawfors knows that Phantom, and i do not think that anyone else is suitable for the role, not John Travolta, and certainly not Antonio Banderas if the rumours are true that he was also offered the role. Please, take some advice from those that frequently listen to "Phantom" -- I hope I am speaking for all "Phans" here when I say we all love this show and we do not want to see it wrecked! We really do not want to be a head ache to Andrew Lloyd Webber, we feel for his music very much and particularly for this show....when it goes on film we would like to see it presented at its best for those who are not familiar with Lloyd Webber's music or the story of the Phantom, and to do that would mean having as many as the original cast as possible in the show---particularly Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton. Thank you for reading this.

HE SAID HE ONCE BELONGED TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH BUT IS NOW AWAY FROM THAT. HOPEFULL, MICHAEL WILL COME BACK HOME. I THINK HE COULD BE A GREAT INSPIRATION AND ROLL MODEL FOR AT LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY THAT NEED SOMEONE TO LOOK UP TO.

Comments: I have just recently gotten obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera, and it is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman have truly formed the musical, making it the successful play it is. I support the idea of the movie, but only if the main characters are portrayed by the actors who appeared in the Broadway production. There is no other answer; if the movie is to succeed, that is the only way. I love your page!

Comments: I watched Michael Crawford last night on the Des O'Connor show. I have been watching Michael since his Frank Spencer days which I have always loved. I think he is a very nice man who has a wonderful warmth about him. Not to mention his fabulous voice - which I must confess surprised me the first time I heard it. I think I like him so much because his fame always seems to surprise him. I would love to have seen him do Phantom. I saw it in Toronto, Canada this summer - it was fabulous - I had tears in my eyes when I left the theatre. I am sure Michael was a wonderful Phantom and if he gets to do the picture I will be first in the queue to see it. Keep up the good work Michael. xoxo

I have followed Michael since his 'Frank Spencer' days back in 1974 and enjoyed seeing his career develop so extensively. He is a very talented man and has definitely improved with age. He looks really wonderful. I hope he will be touring in the UK soon. As for the Phantom, there can be no other!

How often are movie makers told BEFOREHAND exactly what their audience wants to see? How often do they get a chance to KNOW what will make any given movie a blockbuster???? To ignore the very people who MADE POTO the success that it is, would be foolish in the extreme! If Michael Crawford is not cast as the Phantom, this movie will quickly join the ranks of Movies That Should Never Have Been Made, and all the faithful phans will be left with is the dubious satisfaction of saying "I told you so". What a shame!!!!!!

Warner Bros are losing any sense they ever had.Why do they want to dispense of talent in favour of good looks, especially when so much make up will be involved with the character. Comments: I am not sure if I feel as strongly as others about this, but if Antonio Banderas or John Travolta play the Phantom in the upcoming film, I will most certainly not attend any showings of it or buy it on video. Everyone should have enough sense to select someone who has at least played the role before, and someone who can actually sing. The film would be a complete waste of time and money if a REAL Phantom did not play the role. Che is not the Phantom, and never will be. Tony is not the Phantom and never will be. Why can't people understand that. How on Earth is an out of tune Zorro going to make a good Erik? Travolta isn't suitable for the role either. I support my statements 100%. I will enfluence my friends and family not to see the film if a "Fake Phantom" is in it.

Comments: I must say that I am a little shocked. I had no idea that Banderas claimed he won the lead role, or that Travolta had done the same. My main concern is this; yes, Crawford is known all around the WORLD for his role as The Phantom. He brought the character of the Phantom to life. And I do agree that he should have the role for the supposed upcoming movie. I know that no one deserves it more than him. But does anyone know if he wants to do it? Has he ever stated his interest with the movie? I know that it would be absolutely wonderful if he did take his role, (if they could ever make a deal with Warner and ALW?) I honestly believe that no one should deserve it more than him. He brought a character to life that is known around the world. Why doesn't ALW or the Warner Bros. realize this????? As the saying goes: "..I'd advise THEM to comply, the warnings should be clear- Tell THEM there are worse things than a shattered chandelier!..." Very Truly Yours, Phantm99 (A fellow "O.G.")

Yes, according to very recent interviews Michael has given in the U.S. and abroad, he is still very interested in playing the role of Phantom. In fact, in one interview done a few months ago, he stated that he'd even sing the role for an actor that couldn't. We can't let that happen! Comments: I found you because someone at the Warner Bros. message board in the Suggestions area about the Michael Crawford debate, posted this URL. I would be deeply saddened if Warner chooses to cast anyone other than Mr. Crawford for this role. I searched long and hard for a video of his fine performance, and was told that the only thing that would be coming out, eventually, would be the movie version, in which he was slated for the lead. That was a year ago. When I began to search for information on the movie, I couldn't find anything from Really Useful except that it the movie was in the works. I do hope they don't make a BIG mistake on this one. It is the voice we go to hear. It's that simple. And it's that compelling. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts on this. Comments: I am a great fan of "Phantom" (obviously, or I wouldn't be taking the time to write this), and have seen the production in both Toronto and Broadway 5 times. When I heard of the plans of making a film version, like "Evita", I was thrilled. However, I feel to have Antonio Banderas play the role of the Phantom, would be a mistake. Antonio Banderas did do a fine job in Evita. But, the Phantom's role, is much more of an operatic role and requires a much more commanding voice than what Mr. Banderas would be able to offer. Michael Crawford, would obviously be most people's first choice (as well as mine), but I wouldn't rule out many other very talented MUSICIANS/Actors. Nevertheless, Antonio Banderas would not be on my list of people to portray the role of the Phantom. I strongly urge the rethinking of the casting of the title role in order to have a successful project. Many "Phantom" fans would be truly dissapointed if Mr. Michael Crawford is not cast in the title role. Isn't that what making film is all about? Making something that the general public wants to see? Thank you for taking the time to hear my point of view. Good luck on this most worthy of projects.

Comments: Both my family and myself have been fans of Michael Crawford for as long as I can remember. Living in Australia we grew up watching Frank Spencer in Some Mothers and then years later we couldn't believe our ears when we heard "Frank" singing with such an incredible voice! But now when we see Michael Crawford we don't see him as Frank Spencer - he IS the Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunatly, we never got to see him live as the Phantom in the Australia, and, although I have heard numerous performers play the role of the Phantom, never has anybody come close to Michael and the emotions he brings to the role. Just two weeks ago I saw Michael live in Concert. What can I say, he is incredible! He literally becomes the Phantom. It is the most amazing transformation. I urge everybody at Warner to at least watch & listen to Michael perform the role of the Phantom. It doesn't have to be whilst he was performing in the role - take his recent video "Michael Crawford in Concert" for example, it's as though he was back on stage in London on opening night! Watch his face, the emotions, the movements of his body. You won't be disappointed and you'll realise there is nobody else who is worthy enough to play the role of the Phantom Jenn (Australian's want Michael as the Phantom!!)

Comments: Andrew Lloyd Webber, RUG, Warner Bros. and whom ever else the "powers that be" are comprised of, are completely out of their minds to believe that true "Phantom" fans will accept anyone else in this role other than the man who first breathed life into Erik, Michael Crawford. This movie will NOT be a success without him! They want box office draw, HIRE THE ORIGINAL PHANTOM THAT EVERYONE KNOWS!!!! We're the people with the money.... We're the people who will buy (or NOT buy) the soundtracks, videos, etc. I'm angered by their *lack of respect* for this beautiful theatrical masterpiece! The person who can give this role the DIGNITY IT DESERVES for the big screen is Michael Crawford! Why in the world hire some "pretty face" that CAN'T sing (up to par!!) and cover him in makeup and a mask??? If Andrew Lloyd Webber does not end up doing the right thing by this movie, I'll have lost whatever shred of respect I may have once had for this man and his genius! (Shred, being the keyword!) Comments: God,Andrew must be an idiot if he can't see Michael doing this. The role is his and none other.I mean, this movie will probably be nice to see in a visual sense....but won't I be missing Michael!

Comments: We saw the Phantom in Los Angeles 3 times. Michael Crawford was the best by far! We would like to see it again in Norfolk,VA in April 1999. We will be taking our 2 boys (ages 6 & 8) who love the original score from Phantom sung by Michael Crawford.

Comments: Michael Crawford is the only Phantom, and Warner Bros. can't change that no matter who they cast
