I just had this idea. Why not have Antonio play the role of the Phantom. Hell, why stop there? I am sure that Urkel guy is out of a job right now. I don't know if his show is still on, but I think it's time to see Urkel get some box office dollars. After all, Urkel fits the role of the Phantom just about as well as Mr. Banderas. Come to think of it, I haven't seen Roseanne Barr in any movies lately. What about John Goodman? They can put in a new, updated part into the movie. Yeah, they can have the Phantom (John Goodman) battle his weight problems. I mean, if you aren't gonna put Michael in the movie, you might as well use these suggestions. They make just about as much sense as putting Antonio in this movie. (Note: What you have just read is called SARCASM. This was said to make a point. Do NOT give Urkel's agent a call.) Oh, and before I leave my mark again, I need to say something. I love you Elizabeth. |

I certainly did. I nearly suffocated on me lunch when I found out they were serious. Like I wrote to the studio, if they are looking for a Hollywood name they might as well get Schwarzenegger to play the role. The effect will be the same, the movie will be a joke (does anyone else question the thinking in hiring an actor with a spanish accent to play a man living in Paris)? I have one last thing to say: if anyone else but Crawford gets the role, you won't see me in the theatre. |

Antonio is a fine actor, but the phantom didn't have a spanish accent!!!! There is no way he could pull it off. his accent is too strong. Michael started it in the theater and should finish it in the theatre!!!! |

I fell in love w/Phantom music first time I heard it on local radio. Bought the original cast album, played it forever was so intrigued I read the novel plus have seen almost every movie made. Only saw excerpts of M. Crawford performing. At age 6 I took my daughter to NY to see Phantom, orchestra, 3row from stage, center. If only Mr. Crawford had been in it. Even my 6hr. old said later that the new "Phantom" wasn't as strong a performer as Mr. Crawford. She likes J.Travota & saw Antonio B in Zorro but at 17yrs she says there's no way either could be the "Phantom". I wish us all luck in getting Warner Bros. to change their ..............minds. |

From watching and listening to recent interviews both state-side and in Australia, Michael's made it known that he *is* very interested in still doing the movie. He'd do it in a heart-beat. In fact, in one interview, he even said he'd sing the part for another actor if he had to. Let's just PRAY it doesn't come to that.*** To Whom It May Concern, I am all for seeing Michael Crawford performing the role of the Phantom in the movie....but have you considered that he might not want to do so? Perhaps he is more comfortable on the stage, or he is simply tired of playing the role of Erik....Not to discourage your work, because I feel that it's great! But these are some things that you might want to consider. |

It's unthinkable that anyone but Michael should be cast as the POTO in the movie. Imagine the King and I without Yul Bryner? The Movie moguls must be mad - they have a ready made, guaranteed success with MC in the role and an assured flop with anyone else. Michael .....or bust! |
| Name: Dori Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: CA Time: 1998-10-14 16:22:25 Comments: I saw Davis Gaines play the Phantom last weekend in Hollywood. I enjoyed the show but Michael Crawford he ain't! After he sang "Music of the Night", the audience applauded politely. When Michael sang it in concert at the Bowl in August, the crowd jumped to their feet and roared. And DG has a fine, trained voice. What hope is there for an amateur like Banderas? The whole idea of casting a non-singing actor in a role like the Phantom is ridiculous. It requires years of training to attain the range and tonal quality for such a role. The little bit of crooning that AB did in "Evita" does not qualify him to play Erik. It sounds like Warners is playing games with the fans of musical theatre and has already made plans for writing off their losses. If they mean the film to be a success, they will cast no one but Michael Crawford. |
| Name: Lucy Slaght Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Virginia Time: 1998-10-14 14:16:38 Comments: It would be an absolute disaster to have anyone else play the Phantom other than Michael Crawford. HE IS THE PHANTOM. His voice stays with you when the CD is over. When watching his concert video, you can see how engrossed he is in the songs (and the role itself). Why cast someone else who would not convey the same portrait of the Phantom as he would. There's no doubt in my mind that more people would go see the movie if Michael Crawford was in it. I know I won't go see it if he's not. And I would definitely not go see any other Warner Brothers movies. I sincerely hope that Warner Brothers wake up and stop considering anyone else for the role than Crawford!!! |

In his farewell address to L.A., he even mentioned when it would start filming. It's been suggested the film fell apart because of Andrew and Sarah Brightman's split. This is no reason for MC not to be in it. Also, despite the fact that he was verbally promised the role, he is the most well known Phantom, is at the top of his form, and sounds better than the other seven Phantoms that I've seen. I've written letters and distributed info on this He must be cast. ANYONE FOR PRESIDENT. MICHAEL CRAWFORD FOR PHANTOM. |
| Name: Diana Thornburg Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Kansas City, MO Time: 1998-10-13 05:04:56 Comments: Michael Crawford has a unqiue feel for Eric. He is the only individual with the quality and emotion for the part. In keeping with the true story, Eric was not a young man. Why place an unbelievable age bracket in the part? I saw a performace of phantom with someone else in the part, while the performance was good, I always heard Michael's voice overlaid on the perosn singing. I know this isn't fair to the individuals who give their all for the part, but after Michael Crawford, there is no other. |

To cast another actor would be ridiculous. John Travolta and Antonio Banderas are "good" actors however, I do not feel that they would do this role any justice. After someone else assumed the role I was offered free tickets by a friend to go see it. I refused them. I have seen video clips of other talented people performing the role. But in my opinion..noone can be Erik but Michael Crawford. Casting Banderas is, of course, ludicrous. I don't need to sign a petition to know that I wont be inflicting that movie on myself. Such a pity.. Michael Crawfords performance will have to remain only legend to all who never saw it. I feel very very lucky that I did. |

In the last few years since I "discovered" Michael Crawford, I have purchased every one of his albums (most on both CD and cassette), videos of many of his previous roles (Some Mothers, Barnum, etc.), spent $75 to see him live in concert this summer, bought his TV concert video, planning to buy a raffle ticket, and hopefully will spend many more $$$$ to see the "Phantom" film multiple times, buy the soundtrack (both CD and cassette) and the eventual movie video. Now let me see---that amounts to approx. $350 dollars already spent on this "unknown" actor/singer, with plans to spend at least $125 more. And you can multiply me by tens of thousands of other fans. However, if anyone other than Michael Crawford stars in the movie, I have spent my last dime for ANYTHING connected with "Phantom of the Opera". You can bank on that. (By the way, Warner Bros....who says big stars equal box office success? Remember what a huge, overbudgeted, star-laden film called "Cleopatra" did to 20th Century Fox? Got its top executives fired and almost bankrupted the studio. And in recent memory, how about "Waterworld," the dud to end all duds! Please don't make "Phantom" deja vu all over again!!). Forget artistic considerations. Just cast Michael Crawford to keep your balance sheets printed in BLACK ink. |

I have also sent e-mail to the address listed in that WB web site. My feelings are very strong that Antonio Banderas, John Travolta (or anyone but Michael Crawford, for that matter) should NOT be cast in this movie role. It seems so obvious that casting a known entity (and a CURRENT one---Michael C.'s concerts are sell-outs!!!) would be the only correct (and financial feasible) one!! Mr. Crawford's talents are known and are so appreciated by so many people---people who has expressed a desire to spend their hard-earned $$$ to see the complete Phanton film, if Michael Crawford is cast. These same people (most of them) have also expressed their decision (myself included) to never spend a penny to see Antonio B. or anyone else of lesser talent play that incredible role!! I sincerely hope that Warner Bros. listens to the paying public and casts Mr. Crawford as the Phantom! Annette |

Yes, we want someone who can carry the film and the starring role, but that someone is not necessarily a Hollywood "name". Casting Michael Crawford as the Phantom would serve to appease both sides of the fence: the diehard Phantom fans and the general public, who wish to be moved and entertained by a film. Michael Crawford is known by those who have not even seen any version of the stage show. Casting a Travolta or Banderas or whoever is the latest favorite would be a tragedy and would diminish the beauty, integrity, and power of the role. If they were good enough to do Phantom, they would have performed the role on stage, where true acting skills do not rely on fifty takes or manipulation of camera angles. |

Future generations deserve the chance to experience one of the greatest performances of this era! I can't imagine my children or grandchildren being deprived of that and thinking that Hollywood's version of "Erik" was a true portrayal of the soul of this character. It's an impossibility. That man lives and breathes inside of Michael Crawford. Without him in the movie you have nothing but an empty shell. I, for one, will NEVER waste my money to see that. If Warner Bros. wants to make money, which at the moment seems to be their only goal, they should understand that we are a rather phanatical group. If Michael stars in the movie, I will see it several times just like all the young girls saw "Titanic" over and over. (Michael is my Leonardo!) I will buy the video, the soundtrack album, and any books that are published regarding its production. If anyone not qualified for the role is cast, I will have nothing to do with it. Warner Bros. if you show us some integrity, we'll show you the profits! Please reconsider your unfortunate and, I assure you, unprofitable decision. |

My heart and mind have agreed....... there is only one Erik - MICHAEL CRAWFORD. If the movie is to be made, and I believe we should immortalise this wonderful emotional roller coaster ride, the lead roles should be once again returned to those who were entrusted to the very foundation of our love affair. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford have many thousands/millions of fans around the world simply by one production that will live forever. If it was a risky adventure back in 1986 to feature these two brilliant performers who still mesmerise us all, why is it a hard task for the power brokers of the movie world to realise it is what most POTO fans desire. We will be the paying public - we will be the ones who will put our hands in our pockets and collect all the new merchandise that will be on offer. How can one fail? Warner Brothers - here our plea. You try our patience - make your choice! You must listen to us! We will not go away! In 1990 you agreed Michael was to be an integral part of the movie then, why the change of heart? We know that he would grab the opportunity with glee and further enhance Erik than he could before on the stage. Listen ..... learn ...... and do the right thing by us all. |

I grew up with the Phantom through Gaston Leroux's original novel The Phantom of the Opera. I've seen Lon Chaney's silent film portrayal of the Phantom, a made for television mini- series some 10 years ago on The Phantom, and seen the butchered version of the tale which cast Robert England (whom I dearly love in the role of Freddy Krueger) as the Phantom. I also rediscovered the Phantom in Susan Kay's novel Phantom published a few years ago, in which the heart and soul of Eric had been captured so perfectly. But through all these variations and retellings of the original Phantom story, no author or actor has ever understood the pain and torment that made Eric who he was. And no one has brought the Phantom to LIFE as truly as Michael Crawford has. I would feel deeply cheated if Warner Bros. cast a big name star in the role of Phantom purely for profit's sake and turned a blind eye to the only actor who has given the Phantom the life we have come to know and love. If Michael Crawford is passed by for this role, I will simply not see this movie as it can not possibly live up to my expectations. No money will be garnered from me merely for profit's sake. Sorry Warner Bros. Do the right thing... |

Gentlemen, I have a little story to tell you: Once upon a time, about fifty years ago, God was getting ready to send a baby boy to a couple in England on Earth. He saw something very special in this baby. He called over one of his best angels, one with the purest, most beautiful voice in Heaven. He asked him to sing into the child's mouth; the angel did so. Pleased, God then placed His blessing on the the little one and sent him on his way to his destiny. Shortly thereafter, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford had a little boy. They named him Michael. If ever there was a performer on the face of this whole planet who was born for the role of a lifetime, it is Michael Crawford. 1300 live stage performances. Over twelve million copies of the original cast album sold worldwide, featuring Crawford's incomparable, Heaven-sent voice. Countless concert and television appearances the world over. He wasn't just the first Phantom of the Opera; he is, was, and will always be the DEFINITIVE Phantom of the Opera. Creator of a role he seemed specifically sent down from above to play. He was given the part he was destined for twelve years ago by the very man who now has conspired to rob him of it in the film version. He was promised the reprisal of the role in the film eight years ago. This is the most blatant and shocking betrayal of the trust of a professional performer and the fans that I have witnessed in some time. Shame on you, Andrew Lloyd Webber! May I remind you, sir, that "The Phantom of the Opera" was probably the biggest money-maker of your theatrical career. You owe its success (and a nice chunk of your personal fortune) to the man YOU HIRED to bring its central character to life. He did that in spades, over and over for you, around the world, 1300 TIMES. Let me say that again, Mr. Lloyd-Webber: ONE THOUSAND, THREE HUNDRED TIMES! He made that show for you. He immortalized that show for you. You owe him far better than this. What are your arguments against him? His age? Check the Leroux and Kay novels again, sir... you'll find that Erik was in the same age range as Crawford is now when the story took place. His bankability, his star quality? PUH-LEASE. Even people who are not well-acquainted with "Phantom" have at least some knowledge of who Michael Crawford is! The only logical choice for the role is Michael Crawford, and we all know it. Giving that part to anyone else would be like telling people to learn to accept that an elephant now looks like a goldfish. If you insist on sacrificing integrity and artistry for glitz and glamor (nothing personal, Antonio), then what you'll have is a big-budget, big production value, big-name movie...with no heart, and no soul. You steal this from Michael Crawford, and you might as well take the whole thing off life support; it's dead in the water without him. My hats are off to the founder of this website, and I support this effort with all my heart. |

Any actor can play this role. But there are special actors who have an inner ability to portray certain characters that reachout and touch the very soul of people all over the world. Lon Chaney was one. Michael Crawford is another. Antonio Banderas is a good actor, but he lacks that certain charisma to pull this off. Evita surely showed that putting a big star in a featured role didn't mean a thing. It didn't make the money its producers thoought it would. If I was directing and producing this picture(and Warners would be smart if they let me)Michael Crawford would have this role in a Manhattan minute. Ahhhhhhh dreams. Marc Harwood |

A film of Phantom that does not star Mr Crawford can only be made for the glory of a huge hollywood star and the money that would generate. A film using Mr Crawford is made for it's artistic value and for the preservation of a masterpiece. If you have absolutely no wish to preserve the value of this work then feel free to cast someone else. I will not watch it, and have no respect for anyone that would sell themselves that short. You have the opportunity to create a masterpiece, so create - don't destroy! |

It may not mean much to you, or be able to correct what's going on, but, here goes nothing. I idolize and admire Michael Crawford. To me, he has lived an amazing life and achieved so much, more than I could ever hope for. He has such an influence on his fans and their lives...so big it's scary and I cannot put it into words. Ever since I listened to the cassette from "Phantom of ther Opera" I've been different. As a, hopefully, aspiring singer/actress, I envy him and his success. But when I see him or listen to him, he makes me feel as if I can achieve anything as long as I want it bad enough. I can think of no other person right for the role of the "Phantom" besides our dear Michael Crawford. He is my Angel of Music, and Hollywood can't take that away from me, nor anyone else. He brought that role to life much more than a 1000 times and should be allowed to 'take it away' for a last, and final time. What I'm TRYING to say is that I support this site fully and I will do the best I can to help this campaign and win Michael the role he does best. Please, keep up the FANTASTIC work!! :) |

I am a fan of both Michael Crawford and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Please preserve the dignity of the piece by casting Michael as the Phantom. Having never had the priviledge of seeing Michael in the role of the Phantom during the years he was on the stage, I have eagerly awaited the movie. Now I hear that Antonio Banderas will play Erik. No. My dream of ever seeing Micheal in the role will be crushed. All the years of waiting, hoping and praying will be for naught unless someone stands up and says "this must not be." "We've passed the point of no return." So, to use Erik's (Michael's) line: MAKE YOUR CHOICE! I choose Michael Crawford. Thank you for your time. Bless you, Michael. Sincerely, Sabrina Gail |

Turel Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Pennsylvania Time: 1998-09-24 18:01:58 Comments: Have to admit I never knew who Michael Crawford was until about 1-1/2 years ago when my girlfriend kept talking about him. Since then I am "hooked" on his music and cannot imagine anyone else but Michael as the Phantom in the movie version. So many musicals have failed without the original cast being made into the movie, i.e. "Hello, Dolly" (it needed Carol Channing or an older woman in the Dolly role); the one that Audrey Hepburn did in place of Julie Andrews (and then Julie Andrews went on to do award-winning performances in "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins"--can you imagine what Julie would have done to the musical "My Fair Lady"). I think Warner Brothers would make a BIG mistake having anyone in the role of Phantom other than Michael Crawford. Age is NOT a factor as the Phantom's face is not shown and, having seen Michael in concert (both PBS and Radio City Music Hall), not only his voice but also his talent would enhance the film version of "The Phantom of the Opera". |

Anderson Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Clarksville, MD Time: 1998-09-24 13:17:27 Comments: I would like to begin by saying that Michael Crawford is The Phantom of the Opera. Sure the music is wonderful, but if he had not originated the roll this show may not be as famous as it is today, and we would probly not be having this discussion. The concern is that Michael is a stage actor, however he has been cast in many other movie musicals including "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," and "Hello, Dolly." He was supurb in both of these movies. I was one of the fortunate few who had the opportunity to see this amazing man in concert this summer. Each of his songs had me in tears because he puts so much power and emotion into what he sings. Another concern is that he is too old to be able to preform this part well, but I saw him during part of a very long, and obviously stressful road tour, and he was hardly the worse for the wear. Many other actors and actresses have sucessfuly made the switch from the stage to the screen such as Julie Andrews, Yul Brenner, Rex Harrison, Bette Midler, Helen Hunt, Nathan Lane, and Barbra Striesand and look where they are today. Michael Crawford is just as talented, if not more than any of these people. He has seven albums one of which to this date has sold more than two million albums. I'm sure that Antonio Banderes has a nice voice and people would walk out of the movie theater saying "That was nice," but with Michael Crawford in the role people would walk out saying "That was AMAZING, let's see it again, let's buy the soundtrack, and lets buy the video." |
