Comments: It is beyond me why there is such a controversy over who should play the Phantom in the film version. There is only one answer...Michael Crawford!! He may not have the box office draw that the other actors that have been suggested have, but I think they should just realize Michael is the most logical person for the role and give it to him. If they are concerned about his age, that's what make-up and stunt doubles are for. If the studios can convincingly recreate the most famous shipwreck in the world, make us believe that New York City is being blown up by aliens, or being stepped on by a huge fictional lizard, certainly they can take a 56 year old man and make him look 30-ish. It would be a huge mistake if they cast any other person in this role. It is HIS signature role!!

Comments: I would love to see a film version of this wonderful masterpiece but only if Michael Crawford could star. It would be ruined if anyone else even tried to fill his shoes as the Phantom. I totally support your campaign to stop the production of this movie if it is not to star Michael Crawford.

Comments: If Andrew Lloyd Webber chooses anyone other than Michael Crawford for the role of the Phantom in the new Phantom of the Opera movie, it would be the same as someone handing him a huge, flawless diamond and him saying, "No, thank you, I'll just take a chintzy chunk of cheap glass instead." I would like to encourage Mr. Lloyd Webber to take the beautiful, flawless diamond that he's being handed and run with it! Choosing anyone other than Michael for the role of the Phantom would guarantee that this new movie would be nothing more than a shallow, hyped-up, second-rate horror film and would bomb big-time at the box office.

Comments: I have sent letters by mail and FAX, so far, to Warner Brothers and Really Useful Group, I will keep on sending until our voices are heard AND HEEDED. #1, Michael Çrawford is NOT too old for the movie role. He is more youthful looking and acting than Antonio Banderas. #2, just how young does Warner's and RUG think the Phantom character is? He is certainly middle-aged; also the character is completely disquised by his disfigurement, so the whole performance hinges on how the actor sings and acts. Millions of people worldwide(and I'm not exagerating) know that Michael Crawford is the ONLY Phantom. Warner Bros' bottom line WILL suffer if they do not cast the right Phantom!

Comments: I just saw Michael Crawford in concert at Las Vegas for the first time. Unfortunately, I never saw him in phantom, but "WOW" what a singer and actor. In the concert, without a mask, makeup, or costume, he became the phantom right before our eyes. It would be the Hollywood blunder of the century to cast anyone other than Michael Crawford as Phantom.

Comments: I have been a fan of Micahel Crawford from the time he appeared as the Phantom. I've purchased all his CD's and some VHS videos. Planned my trip to the US and Las Vegas in October 1996 to watch his show. But sadly, he had a hip surgery at the time and some other performer replaced him. For me it was Michael Crawford or bust. Luckily, my reservation tickets were refunded. However, I still went to MGM Grand if only to buy the CD. Is there any word about his health? If Hollywood replaces him as the Phantom, I believe it will be a great disappointment to Michael's fans and a bigger disaster at the box office. Andrew Lloyd Webber should know how it is to lose money on a million dollar production. I hope whoever holds the key to the Phantom production will be enlightened and have a change of heart. One die-hard Michael Crawford fan.

Comments: Any Phantom movie without Michael in the title roll will be a failure at the box office. People are not stupid and this move has many of them very upset. I intend to write to both Warner and ALW to try and have them re-think their casting policy. I for one would never attend a Phantom movie if Michael Crawford is not ion the tile roll.

Comments: Diane, I just wanted to say how glad I was to meet you in Las Vegas this past week-end (wasn't Michael wonderful). I was shocked to hear about Lloyd Webber's comments. Considering he wanted Michael to star in the stage version, and to now have such a complete turnaround is really disappointing. If they really want Antonio Banderas in the film then cast him as Raoul (that part would fit him very well). If Andrew and Warners really want "star" names, then surround Michael with these "names", but the part of the Phantom should only be portrayed by the creator of the part, Michael Crawford. Diane, thank you for giving us an outlet to express our feelings, and best of luck to you.

Comments: Diane, You have a fabulous web site and I truly applaud your heartfelt efforts to have Michael Crawford cast as the Phantom in the POTO movie. (If there ever is one.) I haven't seen him perform, but I do think he has the voice that no other person could come close to. I fell in love with POTO when I saw it in San Francisco. From all that I have read and heard it sounds like MC is the best choice for the part. I listen to his CD all the time. It sends chills down my whole body. I think it would be too overwhelming to actually see him act and sing at the same time. I WANT THAT CHANCE! Diane, keep up the good work. I believe in you! IMY

Comments: I, like Dianne, cannot for the life of me believe that Andrew Weber, who has proven himself to be a musical visionary to this point, would even consider Antonio Banderas for the role that was brought to life by Michael Crawford. I read in the PARADE Magazine that Weber felt Michael was "too old" and not enought of a big star to carry off the role??? That is ridiculous!! Michael is the reason so many fans returned to the theater to watch this play, over and over!!!! Antonio is no where near sensitive or powerful enough to carry this role and I and many others, I'm sure will feel the same way. I, and my family will fervently boycott any production of this movie that does not star Michael Crawford. We also intend to pass by word of mouth, and the internet our intentions and to ask all our friends and everyone we meet to join us in this boycott effort. Thanks.....Terry 8-{)

Comments: Count me in as one more who would love a chance to see Michael Crawford's Phantom. I've seen 8 different Phantom actors & have my favorites, but I would still love to see the man who originated the role & it looks like film will be the only opportunity. As for Michael's ability, maybe we should fly ALW in to the US to see him on his tour, about which I have heard nothing but raves, or send him a copy of the PBS tape wherein he does magnificent justice to the songs from Phantom. As for Michael not being a big enough film star - that is a load of . . . . . He is not only an actor who has film experience (Hello Dolly) but he has also made his mark as a stage star, Las Vegas star and television star. He should play the Phantom. . .he's earned it. . . Phantom fans want to see it. . .and in the end, he is the actor who will do the best job in portraying the ALW Phantom on Screen!

Comments: After reading the article in PARADE today, I became more angry than ever at ALW and Warner Brothers. They must be out of their money-grubbing minds. I have seen the Phantom 6 times, but never with Michael. I have consoled myself that his unequaled performance would be preserved forever on film. As someone who is one year older than Michael, I was incensed that he is considered too old. At 56 he's younger than most people in their 30's. Even if he looked his age, his face is never seen. Those of us who have been following his career for the past few years know that his mesmerizing voice is more polished and powerful than ever. He would be an incredible movie Phantom. I traveled from Maine to Las Vegas to see him in EFX; I would go to the ends of the earth to see him in POTO. Keep up the good work, Diane. There are thousands of kindred spirits out here.

Comments: Diane, I applaude your efforts and all the people who have joined your cause. Just today in Personality Parade, it was stated "Michael Crawford, who originated the masked role, is considered too old at 56 and not a big enough star." I, for one, found this highly offensive. Age only means experience, especially for a man who has performed the role in London, New York, and Los Angeles. He has continuously striven to improve his performance. In my opinion, he is better now than ever. I would like to hear their definition of big star, as well. For anyone versed in Phantom, the name Michael is synonymous. If Michael is not an option, at least someone who has dedicated himself to the role time and time again on stage should be chosen. I don't dislike Antonio Banderas but I honestly believe he is not the one for the emotional/physical/vocal range of the Phantom. If he must be cast, he should be Raoul. There have been Spanish flavored versions of that character and he is a major lead as well. If that must be, I don't see a problem. However, I'm not sure if it should be on the big screen at all. The stage version will surely lose money -- cheaper at the movies. Also, Evita lacked the fire the stage version had. They need people from the theater. I believe it would be a better idea if Webber followed suit with the Anniversary version of Les Miserables. The original lead appeared as well as a cast from the past productions. Only the best and brightest. It was a great seller in the stores and the play was promoted. It was true to the theater. I highly recommend it. Good luck to you, Diane, and to all of your supporters.

Comments: are Warner Brothers out of their gourd? Movie's are littered with rotten musicals, most of which failed BECAUSE they cast a popular but incapable film star in the male role. Look at Hello Dolly or Paint Your Wagon or Man of La Mancha. The Impossible Dream was impossible. But when Hollywood played smart--using right but relatively unknown folks, well, Rex Harrison and My Fair Lady won Oscars, Yul Brynner won an Oscar, Barbra Streisand won an Oscar for Funny Girl. They can sell POTO to theatre owners, financial backers, audiences based on the name alone and some good advertising. And it's not as though Crawford is entirely unknown. All the ads have to say is "...starring the original, definitive and Tony-winning star, Michael Crawford"--they'll know they're getting the REAL THING. And tell Warner Bros that I've seen almost every Phantom in the book--Michael Crawford IS the real thing. The camera will love him. Violeri

Comments: Michael Crawford IS the Phantom. I think it's rediculous to even think of casting anyone but. Travolta and Banderas will draw in a few extra hormone driven kidlets, but those few extra dollars will greatly decrease the value of the film and how it will be remembered years from now. "Hey, Honey, what do you want to rent tonight...Ernest goes to Jail or The Phantom? They're the only movies Blockbuster has in." The Travolta/Banderas are good actors and generally more widely known than Mike, but in my eyes they just don't fit the part. After seeing Crawford play the Phantom, it's inconceivable to think anyone else could pull it off. The guy made me cry, for goshsakes:) If the filmmakers were shooting for an Academy Award and not moolah, they'd be insane not to go for Crawford.

I have great many more ideas to discuss, but wish not to take up space, and bore you, or your guests with my dribble. First of all Antonio Banderas should not play the Phantom because he is Spanish and thne Phantom isn't! Also Antonio proved he couldn't sing in Evita. John Travolta is more of well.... a person who sing 50s through 80s songs...not really show tunes. Sarah Brightham is amazing without her or Micheal Crawford the show will be abominable (spelling)

Comments: Well, there's not really anything new to say on this. Phantom is a powerful, beautiful musical. This fact alone means that it will be impossible to cater to the general movie going public. That only leaves us "Phans". And if we can support 4 or 5 house shows along with the various National Tours, then I think its well within our power to make the Phantom movie a hit. But that's just it. It rests solely on the likes of the Phans. And we want Michael Crawford. So if Warner Bros., ALW, and Co., are really not stupid and are simply motivated by money, it seems to me that a Spanish speaking Phantom simply won't get it done with the movie's target audience. So, in conclusion (it's pretty simple really) unless you want a flop on your hands (which I don't think ALW or Warner can sustain right now), give your fans what we've been screaming for - The ORIGINAL Libretto with the ORIGINAL Phantom.

Comments: What is happening in Hollywood? All these people care about is $$$$$$$.....What ever happened to art and to honor? All I know is that one unparalled, amazing, incomparable, and extremely talented actor was dishonored here. How DARE they even think of casting anyone else as the Phantom?!!! EVERYBODY who knows what the "Phantom" is all about must agree that only one man can do this mystical and moving story of love and music any justice. Who do you think that might be? MICHAEL CRAWFORD Mr. Lloyd Webber! Remember the one you hand-picked originally for the part? Why now after soooo many years of building up that man's hopes, as he sat with undying patience, must you totally dissolve your word and your promise? I admit I am an enormous ALW fan! But I am not of fan of this ludicrous idea of Antonio Banderas a Erik. It is unimaginable. I agree with everyone else's new idea-cast him as Raoul-I can see that. But PLEASE don't let another man beside Michael breathe life once again into the role that made him an international star! He has the passion, the sensuality, and above all the VOI CE! HE is the Phantom, there is no way around it. I support everything he does. Only he deserves to be forever immortalized in the film. I promise it will become a classic. Could you imagine anyone other than Judy Garland as Dorothy or Rex Harrison as Prof. Higgins? He played it on stage too, and it worked beautifully in the movie. Imagine the magic that Michael would bring to the sreen! Let's keep up with the continual support-Michael needs us! thank you Diane for this excellent and loyal idea for us to stand behind the TRUE PHANTOM!

Comments: I am really glad there is a web sight out there that I can goto to find out about one of the greatest things to ever hit Broadway. I agree M.C. should play the role of Phantom no one else could do it. If it was Antonio I would want to say "oh what a circus oh what a show" (Evita). I always wandered if they would do a Phantom movie after I saw Evita. It must be M.C. it just has to be. Plus the idea of a sequal is crazy I would go see it just to see it but it ruins the fact that you have to use you imagination. I would also like to find out if Phantom will be returning to my area. I don't have a computer I am using the one at school I would really like a response. My address is 322 Stonemill Dr Louisville, Ky 40222-6787

Comments: Dear Diane, Thank you for working on this campaign!! For over a year, I've been a fan of Phantom of the Opera. I borrowed the cd from a friend. When I heard the first overture, I was completely hooked. The next day, I returned the cd to my friend and purchased one myself. I listened to it at least 3 times a day. I'm a full-time mother, and I had time to just leave it on the player. My children also, grew to love the music. But what I loved about the cd, was Michael Crawford's lovely voice. His voice really showed the pain and anguish of the Phantom . I cried after the second act was over!! I didn't even see the stage show, and yet Michael's voice made me cry in the end. I was so torn over Michael's portrayal, and it only came through by his voice. Later, on I was connected to the internet, and discovered more about Phantom of the Opera and Mr. Michael Crawford. After reading everything I could possibly fine about POTO, I grew very upset with myself, that I was unable to see Michael perform the role of the phantom. He won awards for this portrayal and I heard that many of the shows he performed in were sold out. I truly regretted that I didn't discovered POTO earlier. I also read that Michael was promised the movie role of POTO. I was so happy to hear that, since I never saw him perform live. However, my premature elation was crush. Someone else was considered the role, John Travolta. I was totally shock, and couldn't imagine him as the Phantom. He is one of my favorite actors, but not as the Phantom. As of this year, I later heard that Antonio Bandares, was to portray the Phantom. I was very disappointed . I just could not see the Phantom having a spanish accent. Also, I feel he is too young for the role. He's a great actor, and I have seen him in many roles, but please, I don't want him as the Phantom. I know that movie producers are looking for a big star to do the role for Phantom. However, I feel that if Michael Crawford, was in the movie role, just as many people, will see the movie. The ones who are phanatics, the many people who saw Michael live on stage, and the many, many people who didn't see him perform on stage, like me. The only video I have of Michael as the Phantom is" Andrew Lloyd Webber's Premiere Encore Video" . It's the one where, Michael is singing "Music of the Night". I must have played it 1000 times. Plus, my daughters, always like me to rewind it back, to see Michael over and over. The tapes got so worned that I had to buy another video. I did finally see the stage production of POTO in San Francisco with my daughters. It was fine, but I compared it to the cd with Michael Crawford. It just didn't live up to my expectations. My daughters, asked me if it was Michael performing. I said no, since he doesn't perform it anymore. They were very disappointed. They are only 4 and 7. They keep on asking me for a video of Michael performing the whole show of POTO. I told them it does not exist. Since discovering Michael Crawford in POTO. I have purchased all of his cds and most of the movies he's been in. I feel Michael will be absolutely fabulous, if he did the movie role. The Phantom is the role he created, and I truly feel he cannot do anything wrong with the movie version. Also, I feel that if his movie came out on video, it will be one of the bestsellers. To this day, I still look for anything that has Michael Crawford in the Phantom of the Opera. It could be a poster, an old article, magazine, shirts, etc. Name it I want it. I will be attending his concert in Concord, CA. I promised myself that I had to go,, because I wanted to finally see the "Phantom" live on stage. I know it's not the stage performance. But to hear him sing "Phantom of the Opera" and "Music of the Night", that is all I wish for. I just could not miss this chance of seeing Michael perform. My husband, who is not a fan of the Phantom of the Opera, has told me so often that if Michael Crawford was to play the movie version. He would love to see it, however, he feels anyone else, will not do justice to the role. All I can say, is that if Michael Crawford doesn't do the movie version, I will not be spending my money to see the movie. I'll just save my money, to purchase Michael Crawford cds, and anything related to him. Thanking for taking the time to read this!! Sincerely, Maria Lew-Ong

Comments: A recent article in the Washington, D.C. Cable Guide said of Michael Crawford, "He seemed to be able to take the heart of his audience and tuck it into his songs." He summed up the magic of Michael Crawford and his ability to reach out and make an audience FEEL what he sings. As an avid lover of Phantom of the Opera, I want very much to see and hear Michael Crawford make the movie the success it should be. With Michael, our beloved Phantom will be a classic movie. Comments: Once again, ALW has done a 360 on all of us. For the past 8 years, all we've been hearing is that Michael Crawford was going to do the Phantom movie. Michael has the dubious distiction of joining both Faye Dunaway and Patti Lupone on ALW's reject list!! Last Feb, Antonio Banderas was a guest on Rosie O'Donnell's show, and he said he was very nervous about singing at ALW's birthday bash. He said "I don't sing very well, or speak English very well!!" Rosie had a very surprised look on her face, when he said he was singing the Phantom part. ALW never listens to what his audiences want, and takes them for granted. I don't think this protest will do any good, as he will do what he wants to do. The 90's have been a wasted decade for ALW, as I believe that when he divorced Sarah Brightman, he lost all his inspiration for composing the great music he created in the 1980's. Comments: I was very pleased to see an entire site dedicated to saving Erik. Although I am only 13 and have seen POTO only once, I am a HUGE phan. I was devastaded upon hearing the news that John Travolta was playing the Phantom. I cried when I heard that Antonio Banndares (sorry if I spelt that wrong.) was now signed on as Erik. Now, it is not only Erik who needs protection, but also Christine. they are saying that Kate Winslet is playing her. She can't even act, much less sing. I have encouraged all my friends to join the save Erik campaign and I have convinced around a hundred people in my hometown (now I have to work on the other 5,000) to boycott any Phantom movie, Warner Bros. movie, or RUG production if MC or an equilly talented actor (if there are any) does not placy the Erik. Let's hope we can save him!

Comments: To see so many avid fans in one place is a sheer delight. I understand the need to express opinions regarding the POTO movie issue, but I can't help feeling that the "Powers That Be" will be as unfeeling about OUR interests as they are being of Michael's. It must be quite an insult to him having the executives look past him as a potential choice for the lead role. I also feel that we, as a group of his admirers, should stand behind Michael in whichever capacity he requires us to. And, this means if he asks that we are respectful of the choice made by the movie execs, then we should endeavor to do this; no matter how hard it may be for us. And, as anyone who knows Michael, even a little, knows just how gracious and kind he is. He will most likely elicit an appeal to his fans to support, or at least not verbally abuse the studio's choice. I would imagine the last thing he needs is to lose both the role, AND our support. At a time like that when we know what his wishes are, shouldn't we then follow those wishes? Afterall, aren't we doing all of this for him? And, who knows, the movie studios may wake up yet! We can hope anyway. Thank you for listening to my feelings on this matter. no request.

And it's not as tho I'm not a musical lover; have been for over 45 years. Then I saw Michael's concert on PBS and was swept away! It's been years since I've seen and Actor/Singer that swept me away. By the time he had sung 3 numbers from Phantom I was in tears! How I wish I could have seen HIM do Phantom. Anyway, at this point I have the concert taped until I can buy the video..am trying to get other video of his other concert some years ago...have 4 of his albums and have tickets to see him in Las Vegas on May 23rd. I do hope Warner Bros. is paying attention to all the e-mail, etc. that is being seen on internet, etc. I just can't imagine that they could let anyone else do the roll. As some have said...not letting Yul do KING, Harrison MY FAIR LADY, etc. They've ruined so many wonderful movie musicals starring actors who hav

It simply amazes me that people who are in charge of such large amount so of money and powerful material can be so blind. Did they tell Yul Brenner, oh we think we are going to go with Robert Goulet (in bringing The King and I to the screen from the boards??) NO!!! Now, they did replace Julie Andrews with Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (personally, I would have stayed with Julie as her range is better, her voice quality is better and her accent was truer). Did they learn nothing from Evita?? Lets think a minute what the movie could have been had Patti Lupone and Mandy Patimkin been cast!!! Thanks for a place to speak my peace. Comments: Diane, thank you for your commitment. I'll add some support to your cause. Michael Crawford earned the right to do the movie with his award winning performances in London, New York, and L.A., and in the process made "The Phantom of the Opera" even more successful than it probably would have been had he not blessed the production with his amazing talents as an actor and singer thereby allowing the audience to witness a performance of a lifetime in a role he was destined to play. While I've enjoyed John Travolta in his movies (including "Grease"), and was very pleasantly surprised by Antonio Banderas in "Evita"...[this guy did not just suddenly take up singing lessons for the role of Che], I am not picturing either of them, or anyone else in the role of the Phantom except Michael Crawford who literally became the Phantom in every performance he gave, and in the minds of every audience that was FORTUNATE enough to have seen him in the role. Michael Crawford is the only Phantom I'LL ever need, and quite frankly, if "THE MICHAEL" ain't in the movie, then "I" ain't in the movie theatre.....nor will I be buying the CD or the video. GOT IT????? ALW, RUG, WB, FBI, CIA?????

Comments: I was browsing a book store the other day, and I picked up a book about the top ten in several different categories. In the musical section, it talked about the Phantom of the Opera being one of the best musicals, but it also said even though the music was wonderful, Michael Crawford's portrayal of the Phantom was undoubtably one of the reasons that the musical is as popular as it is now. There is no denying it...the man has talent! He has created a character that has one the hearts of many, many women and even men all over the world. I have seen several other performers portray the Phantom on stage, some were good, and some were not so good, but I did not think that any were as convincing as Crawford. I would love for this character to be immortalized on film by the man who created him. I do not think that the movie could be successful any other way. Crawford, I think, is really the only person who can pull off both the singing and the acting. If you want a dashing young hero, like Antonio Banderas, cast him as Raoul, the young, dashing love interest, but not as the Phantom. The Phantom can only be played by one person, the actor who created him.

Comments: I have mixed emotions about sequels. I am a big "Gone With The Wind" fan, and was very much against a sequel, but after seeing it I couldn't have been more wrong. It was closure to the original. I also didn't believe that anyone could compare to Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'hara and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, but what else to do, they are no longer with us. I know that this is no comparison to POTO, but if they will give the part to MC, why not do it? If they do not give it to him, than I agree, no sequel. But, there are so many people in the world that do not know about MC. He is absolutely mesmerizing, and this may be the only way to give him more exposure to the public. My husband and I cannot remember how we became fans, but do know that from the beginning we were hooked, and we have hooked many other people. Though, there are still many unknowing. I plan on raising my 4 year old son and the next child that we have on MC. We played POTO and MC, the entire time I was pregnant, and had my now 20 year old sister, singing the POTO when she was in Junior High. Let's try to give it a chance, but only if they give it to the appropriate actor. Wouldn't it be great to see MC receiving all the awards that are due him. I have several CDs that have other Phantoms, and they are a disgrace to ALW's musicals. I know that this will probably make some people unhappy, but I think MC deserves his day on the big screen. Comments: Dear Diane, Thank you for taking the time to put this page together. Many of us have great ideas and even greater intentions, but lack the discipline to put them into action. I am honored to be a part of the Michael Crawford International Fan Association. I saw him live in EFX in Las Vegas and saw the PBS taping of his live concert in Cerritos, CA, this past February. I will have the privilege of seeing him live in concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Memorial weekend. These trips all cost money and time, but to have the opportunity to see such a talented, caring man is, indeed, a privilege, and well worth the expense. Mr. Crawford has brought an elegance to his craft. He has given of himself to his audiences for many years, accepting nothing less than perfection from himself. I feel he has earned the right to portray Erik, aka Phantom, in the movie version/sequel. To have this 'plum' ripped out of his hands by a man he had trusted, and to see it offered to other performers, albeit talented in their own rights, is an afront of major proportions. I cannot think of any other performer who has consistently reached to the core of his/her being to bring life and depth to a character day after day, or who has gone to great lengths to prepare for a role (i.e., circus school for Barnum) as has Mr. Crawford. He is a role model for other performers, and an inspiration to all. Thank you for the opportunity to share my feelings on this subject. Sincerely, Dawn Swann

Comments: Diane, I am in total agreement with you. The article written by Dana Parsons was posted on both the POTO mailing list and the Michael Crawford mailing list and hopefully generated many responses. I feel RUG and WB are missing out on the advertising opportunity of a lifetime. With all of the fabulous print reviews from the finicky theater critics, WB could be advertising something like: "Come and see the man who had all the critics raving. See the perfomance that seduced and entranced women on two continents. Come and hear the voice that has haunted the legions that have heard it. Come and experience--Michael Crawford as: The Phantom of the Opera." But no, WB seems to thing that Banderas's name and face will bring in the right demographic. (Although, I'm not sure of the logic of this thinking, considering the man will be behind a ton of latex AND a mask. Oh well, I guess ours is not to reason why.) Keep your chin up, and remember, no matter what happens, at least you did everything you could to prevent this travesty from happening. MC fan for life Angie C.

Comments: Michael Crawford would make the Phantom movie a classic to be enjoyed by all in addition to future generations. All other theatre phantoms followed Michael Crawford's lead and tried to duplicate his perfect interpretation of the phantom. No one on earth can do a better job. Michael's quality work would win new fans who would want to see more of Andrew Lloyd Webber's works. Michael is the one who would make it profitable for the producers at the theaters and on video. If Michael were cast as the Phantom, I know I would see it numerous times and definitely buy the video. If Michael Crawford does not star in this movie, it will just be another phantom movie of little consequence. Please don't pass up a great talent for a Hollywood cutie who's face will be hidden behind a hideous face and mask and will have only his acting ability to demonstrate the feelings of the phantom. Choose your Hollywood money-in-the-bank stars to portray Christine and Raoul, the other two leading roles. Please don't pass up

How unfortunate that the world is being deprived of seeing the man who gave the Phantom his spirit immortalized in this role. It saddens me to think that ALW is willing to sacrifice his creation artistically because of a few studio bags of hot air. What a wimp! Comments: You have a gorgeous web page with just the right Phantom....no question about it....Michael Crawford is the only one who can perform Eric/Erik properly. Warners can do their worst, the movie will bomb, like Chorus Line did, because they will not use the correct performance. Who could match the talent....who could love the character and give him such grace, poise, restraint, adoration, and pathos, that Michael Crawford can. He has more talent in his little finger (the right one with the ring) than Bandaras could hope to have in his entire lifetime of performances. Just because one is the flavor-of-the-month, that doesn't mean that they have talent....long after the movie is gathering mold on a shelf, the memory of Michael Crawford's stage work will still live on in people's hearts.

Comments: So they want someone of star quality to play the Phantom in the movie? How about someone who has taken a song from PTO high on the Billboard charts, attracted sold out crowds to see him Phantom (among other plays), has his latest album on the Billboard 200 ever since it came out, had amazing success with his latest PBS promotional concert (his concert was the most profitable in Wisconsin Public Television Pledge Drive history), has received countless awards and recognitions, and is adored the world over? Of course, I'm speaking of Michael Crawford. If Andrew Lloyd Webber doesn't think Michael Crawford will draw in audiences to the movie, then he obviously must be brainwashed by the likes of big business. M.B.M.

Comments: Hi Diane, I too, would like to see Michael do the movie, but if Antonio or someone else does it, I will just boycot the movie and I hope every MC fan and POTO fan out there does the same thing. As fans of Michael, what we need to do is to support him and see him in concert this summer, (I have my tickets), and let him know that we love him and that he and only he will be our Phantom. Things happen for a reason, and I have to believe that God has something special planned for him in his future.

Comments: Saw your light and just thought I'd drop by. I love Michael Crawford and want to see him make the film of "Phantom Of The Opera" or no one. Casting John Travolta or Antonio Banderas or any other mediocre talent is crazy. Why have someone who can't sing when Crawford is the ideal, Tony-award winning Phantom. Let one of the Hollywood boys play Raoul, if necessary, but only Crawford has the charisma and the voice to mesmerize the audience, as the role requires.

Comments: Diane, Great page! I am also a huge MC fan who is devistated that he won't be in the movie. I love the story itself and read everything I can get my hands on. No one but Michael could ever truly play this role. I read something that had been posted on the MC mailing list that I believe was from someone in the media that you had talked to, a Dana Person (?). Anyway, I emailed him with my feelings as did my fiance and I know many others. Maybe we can get this horror stopped before it happens!

Comments: Great page Diane. I am in complete agreement with you. I've seen Michael do Phantom and no one is more qualified to star in this movie than the man who originated the character in London, New York, and Los Angeles; who won every major theatrical award for his performance; and whose voice is on the cast album that has become one of the best-selling cast albums of all times. In the minds of people all over the English-speaking world, Michael Crawford is the actor/singer most associated with this show and this character. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Warner Brothers should have the courage of their original conviction when they cast Michael in the movie in 1990 and ran ads for that movie in the Hollywood trade papers. I've waited as long as you have for it to become a reality and, without Michael in it, I will not support it and I will discourage as many people as I can from supporting it.

Comments: Hi Diane. Great site! I, too, check Krista's site almost daily. Wow, am I ever dismayed about the recent Phantom movie news. Its seems as if Hollywood never learns from its past mistakes. Am I crazy, or wasn't it Warner Brothers that decided not to cast Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle because she wasn't well known enough....and then she appeared in both Mary Poppins and Sound of Music almost immediately thereafter??? You think they would have learned!! (Although I am a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn, I really think that actors in musicals should be doing their own singing). I digress. Anyway, keep us all posted as to what we can do in protest. P.S. I consider myself a very lucky woman, because last month, as part of the pledge drive on my local PBS station (Channel 56, WTVS, in Detroit), I actually got to meet Michael Crawford and have my picture taken with him. I just got my pictures in the mail today, as a matter of fact. HE of course, looked great! And what fun it was to watch him do the pledge drive here!! A fellow fan, Debra Ball

Comments: Great site, Diane! I love the pic. Lets all hope that the role of our beloved Erik goes to the man who rightfully deserves it; the man who created the role and was promised it before anyone. I am, of course, talking of the imcomparable Michael Crawford. He may be older and not as well-known as Antonio, but he would make the movie phenominal, and people would see it again and again rather than just once. If they have to do a movie, I just hope they do it right; and the right thing to do would be to cast MC. -Erik's Bride

Comments: Diane, Hi! I got your e-mail and thought I would visit your page. I am in total support of you. I agree that ALW and WB are not listening to the fans. I don't think that MC is necessarily the only one that could do the part, but I KNOW that Antonio Banderas is one who could not. I would however love to see MC take the part. He is such a fantastic actor and I know he would not disappoint. Well, that is my view about that. Amy Carroll

Comments: Michael Crawford or anyone else who has played the role on stage should be the lead in the movie. This film does not need a movie star to sell it. The music sells itself. Hollywood should learn that. Yes Evita needed a star to sell it with Madonna, but everyone knows of the Phantom of the Opera with it's theatre marketing and wide word of mouth it has received touring and playing in many countries around the world.

Comments: I cant believe that any studio would be silly enough to sign Banderas for the role of Phantom of the OPera. Michael Crawford is the quintessential Phantom, having won a Tony for his stage work in POTO. If the show goes ahead with Banderas it is obvious money only is the vision of the studio's,not making a classic film which would be around for years to come. Look what little impact Evita had.Is this what they want for Phantom. I think ALW should look at the thousands of fans who will not see the movies without Michael Crawford in the starring role.

Comments: Michael Crawford for the "Phantom" movie please, and only MC. I was fortunate enough to see MC in concert in Australia five years ago in "The Music of Andew Lloyd Webber"and without the aid of makeup, costumes, scenery, staging or that mask MC was able to convince me he was the Phantom. I've never heard anyone else portray the emotion and feeling he does in his singing of the Phantom music, he doesn't just sing the music like an "angel of music" but portrays Erik emotions in all facets of his character. I can't see how any Hollywood actor will be able to sing and portray the emotional needs of this role equal to MC and leave the audience convinced that Erik is deserving of sympathy at the end of the movie. MC for the Phantom movie and only MC.

Comments: Phantom of the Opera is not ALW's personal creation-- the musical was based on the book by Gaston Leroux. The mere idea of ALW toying with the story more than he has (the musical left out a lot, but is still very well done) is disgusting. Erik was not handsome, so I don't understand why they're trying to cast these "handsome" guys... except to suck idiots into the theater who know nothing about Phantom.
