Comments: Letting things drag on interminably takes a toll on you, doesn't it? Aren't you sick of the movie hooplah? Do yourself, and all of us rabid fans, a favor and settle this Phantom movie issue. Sure, there might be obstacles relating to finance and production and other business issues, movies are big deals and big money. But there is no such obstacle to casting the title roll. That, Lord Lloyd-Webber, has been done now for 15 years. You're a scrappy little fellow; twist arms, tweak ears, whisper sweet nothings, do whatever it takes, just get the damned thing done. And by the way, I have loved EVERYTHING you've done. Aspects of Love. Evita. Starlight Express. Last time I visited Vegas I was sick to learn I wouldn't get to see Starlight for the 5th time at the Hilton. You're exceptional at what you do. Don't be swayed from your original instinct in casting Mr. Crawford. He takes his reponsibility most seriously, and will do you proud. Email me, if you'd like and we'll discuss things further. If there's anything I can do to help launch the movie with Michael in it, I'm at your disposal. Thanks for your ear. Sherry

Comments: Dear Lord Lloyd Webber,
I am almost 17 and have been a fan of yours for several years now, and I have the highest respect for you. However, I must say to you that you should cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom in this new movie instead of Antonio Banderas. I'm not saying Mr. Banderas is a bad actor, for I feel quite the contrary. He is also a fairly good singer. But Michael Crawford has a charisma which in every way matches that of the Phantom. His voice gives the average person chills and he has a voice which matches Leroux's description of the "voice like an angel." He can act and has been in several feature films. He also is quite popular, his album "On Eagle's Wings" reaching gold status. His name is also extremely senonymous with the Phantom. I asked one of my teachers out of the blue at the beginning of the year if she'd ever heard of Michael Crawford. She replied,"He's the Phantom of the Opera". I would urge you to take what I've said into account as you make your decision.

Comments: Dear Lord Lloyd-Webber,

I implore you to rethink your decisions and attitudes concerning the "Phantom of the Opera" movie. Please think about what and who as made the show successful and cast Michael Crawford in the role. Also, in recent interviews you have called the stage show a "hokum" which deeply offended many Phantom fans like myself. If this show was a "hokum" as you so called, then why did it last so long? More importantly, why are there fans out there fighting to preserve the artistic integrity of it? It seems to me that you do not have high artistic aspirations for the movie, and you try to garner support by saying that the original stage production wasn't that good to begin with, and any changes would make it "better." Well, fans had ten years to find out the "better" way and we wish to see a true representation of the stage show on film, starting with the casting of Michael Crawford. Whether you choose to heed us is clearly your decision, but in the end it will ultimately be your fault. Fans and audiences will be fickle, but we're not stupid. We will still have Michael's voice on CD, videotape, and in our memories, while you will have your name attached to another "Phantom" movie flop, and you will lose whatever respect fans had for you...If they haven't lost it already.

Thank you for your time,

Stephanie Corcino

Comments: Michael Crawford is Erik!! Although I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Banderas as Che in Evita I believe it would be a travestity to the man Erik Dressler was and the role, to place Banderas in the role. He does not have the ability nor the insight to play a man with such pain! Which might be a good thing for him!! Please I'm begging you to place Mr. Crawford in the role he was born to play!! Thank you!

Comments: Dear Sir:
Ever since I got hold of the CD "Sarah Brightman: the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection" and heard Sarah and Michael Crawford sing Phantom, I realized there is no Phantom but Michael, just as no one can play Christine as Sarah did.
While I think that filming Phantom is a wonderful idea, I know that Antonio Banderas is not made for the part of Eric. I am a great fan of Mr. Banderas, so this is not prejudice speaking. One of the reasons I cannot see Antonio as Phantom is the fact that he has a Spanish accent. In Zorro and Evita, he was perfect, but the only singer/actor who can play the REAL Eric the Opera Ghost is none other but Michael Crawford.
Thank you for your kindness,
A.G.

Comments: Dear Mr. Webber,
I am a deep fan of the Phantom of the Opera, and I feel that there is NO other person more deserving of donning the mask and the cape MORE THAN MICHAEL CRAWFORD himself. When you were doing the Phantom to begin with, you already had him in mind to be the Phantom! He was the most awesome Phantom that you could ever have, and even though Antonio Banderras is a good singer-actor, there is only one Phantom. I ask you to consider that when making your decision. I trust that you will make Michael Crawford the Phantom ONCE MORE!
Thank you for your time, dear sir.
Much respects.

Comments: Dear Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber,
In this letter, we will not assume to tell you anything you don't already know, or attempt to boss you around. Between the three of us, you probably have the best taste concerning whom should play Erik, the Phantom. However, we cannot help but feel that you are making a grave mistake by putting Antonio Bandares into the movie instead of Michael Crawford. I mean, what has Antonio ever done for the benefit of "Phantom"? But look at Crawford! If it hadn't been for him, your play might not have even gotten off the ground! He has a perfect voice and the perfect personality to play this part; not some young, good looking kid who cannot even speak understandably. I am 15, and my friend is 13, and I am telling you that we do not care in the slightest about what Erik looks like. After all, I thought that was the whole point; that it is the heart that counts and that Chritine Daae` is a fool for only caring about what a man looks like. Kind of a Beauty and the Beast deal. It shouldn't matter what he looks like, but what his soul is like. If that isn't one of the main points of the "Phantom", I would like to know what one is. Please remember that it's the spirit of the actor, not the good looks. Thankyou for taking the time to read this note.
From your obediant servants,
O.G. and Christine

To consider someone who doesn't even speaker english all that well is STUPID!!!! Now, be a good boy and do the right thing and PUT MICHAEL CRAWFORD as the PHANTOM. Or do I have to come over to England an box your ears???? Be a good boy now and cast Michael.

Comments: Sir, have you lost your mind???? If you
cast that Spanish actor as the Phantom then that would prove it. REMEMBER, it was Michael Crawford who won the Tony Award for that part. My saying is if it ain't broke then why fix it. You will goof this movie up just like casting Madonna as Evita!!!! That movie was a flop just as Phantom will with any other singer-actor to do the that part other than Mr. Crawford. I can promise you this there will be a lot of people who WILL NOT GO TO SEE it for that reason. That spanish guy was good in the Zorro movie, cause he fitted the part perfectly. But to cast his as the Phantom is STUPID DUMB. You will live to regret it!!!!! I am only one person but there are millions of us who will fight you over this. I do hope you will come to your senses and cast Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Thank you. Nancy J. Calhoun

I've NEVER seen Michael Crawford perform the role as "The Phantom," however, I've heard him sing the songs from the brillant musical (I have the original cast CD) So, I'd greatly appreciate if Michael Crawford would get the role. If you do cast him I beg of you, please cast Sarah Brightman as Christine. Michael and Sarah's chemistry together, is absolutely amazing!

Comments: Dear Andrew Lloyd Webber,
Just recently, for my 15th birthday, my dad got both of us tickets to see the Phantom on Broadway. I had been a Phantom fan for a very long time before that, and had thought that I would have to wait until I was in college to see it. When I found out that I was going, however, I was so excited! I absolutely love your musical, though I have never seen Michael Crawford perform the part Erik. However, I would really enjoy seeing him on the movie, and I am disgusted that you have considered casting Antonio Bandares for this very important role. My friend and I watched a clip of him singing "The Phantom of the Opera" on the internet, and as soon as he came in with "Sing once again with me..." we covered our ears and turned it off. We couldn't stand the noise. (And that's what it was: NOISE)Then we went and listened to Michael sing it, and it was like being renewed. Antonio (no offense) cannot SING, much less speak English properly so we can understand him. He can sure swordfight, but I don't believe he has the ability to capture the spirit of Erik they way it should be played. When I think of him playing the Phantom, I get sick. I beg of you, please, please PLEASE do not do this thing. I don't think I, or anyone else, for that matter, could stand it.

Comments: Dear Sir, I find it hard to believe that there should even be a question as to who should play the Phantom. I have been a fan of the musical since its debut, and I feel the only person qualified is Michael Crawford. He is the one person that is always associated with the role. If it is because he is not a big movie star, than that is not a good enough reason. Why should we let the movies interfere with the theatre? It is pretty sad when we have to compromise real talent with fame. He is famous to the people who love the show and that should be all that matters. Antonio Banderas could not sing his way out of a paper bag, and if you ask me, Michael is better to look at anyway. Please do not be disheartened by my plea, it is just that this is my favorite musical and the thought of having to see it without Michael breaks my heart. This is one Phantom fan that will not be going to the movies to see it without Michael Crawford in the title role. Sicerely, Sandra Westbrook

If you do this, I will be eternally grateful and name my first born after you (even if it's a girl, I'll call her Andrea or something) anyway, I digress, I just want all theatergoers to be happy, and they will be if you do all that I ask. Comments: Dear Mr. Lloyd Webber, I would like to express to you the severe hurt and disappointment that I felt when I heard that the role of the Phantom would be played by Antonio Banderas. The role of the Phantom is a tender role that must be played by someone like Michael Crawford who understands the role, can make the audience know the Phantom, and also, has the voice. No voice is more perfect for this role, than Michael Crawford's. He IS the Angel of Music. I have not heard who is to play the role of Christine, but there is also only one who deserves the role. Miss Sarah Brightman. It would be a terrible injustice if she was not a part of this film. Her voice and beauty are like none other. Please listen to the fans, they're the ones who have been buying the tickets for the past 14 years, we know who we want to see in this film. And it certainly is NOT some Latin egotist who couldn't even, excuse the old expression, carry a tune in a paper bag. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, all the way, or nothing. That's what the fans want. Sincerely, Dusty R. Moyer

Comments: I can tell you what will happen if Banderas is given the role of the Phantom. You, Warner Brothers, and Antonio Banderas will be severely criticized and mocked; no one will see the movie; and after a little while the whole thing will be forgotten just like all other stupid movies. Meanwhile Michael Crawford will live on in our memories as the legendary Phantom (and I'm sure there are more than enough bootleg videos to preserve his memory for posterity). He is the one who will be remembered whether you like it or not. You may choose to use that fact to your money-making advantage (plus the virtue of remaining true to your music and your theater fans) or you may make a fool of yourself--that is your own concern, but Michael Crawford will be remembered with or without this movie.

Comments: Lord Webber, You have the opportunity here to bring the best of theater to Hollywood. Instead you are working to make theater submit to Hollywood's shallow glamor. Michael Crawford as the Phantom is without doubt the greatest thing that theater has to offer. This is your chance to reveal the glory of theater to the world and preserve theater's greatest product for posterity. This is the greatest gift you could ever bestow upon mankind, and instead you cater to the petty ideals of Hollywood! Unless you get Michael Crawford to play the Phantom in this movie, you are selling your innermost soul, you are sacrificing theater to movie-making big shots who couldn't care less about the beauty of music.

Comments: Hello, I am just here to comment on the idea of Antonio Banderas playing Phantom in your musical from a teenagers perspective. Antonio may be cute, but to me he lacks something that is required for Phantom. I have sat and listened to Michael sing his part on cd for unnumbered hours. There's one main reason why people love the theatre...Plays and musicals all give powerful emotions and a feeling of being there, being part of it to the audience. For all the people who missed out on the opportunity to see Michael be Phantom it's a chance to at least capture a little of what they missed. For the people who saw it live, it's a chance to recapture the magic of that show. In my eyes having Banderas play Phantom would be a great disservice to the role, the musical and the movie. I honestly can say that going to see Phantom at the cinema would be a thrill for many people, but I don't feel the urge to go see Phantom, knowing that Banderas would be the title role. Please don't cheapen the experience for movie goers and musical lovers.

Comments: It is upon my many conversations with fellow college students from around the world that I base my deductions. If people see that Antonio Banderas is starring in a musical, they will wonder why he has stooped to such a low role and they will not bother to see the movie. If people see that the greatest popular music theater singer is starring in a movie, they will wonder what all the hubbub is about these grand performances and go to the movie to find out for themselves. The enjoyment of popular music theater is unknown to many, and no one can reveal its glory as splendidly as Mr. Crawford can! Lord Webber, if you cast Mr. Crawford in this film and advertise him as the multi-award winning theater star that he is, then it is certain that everyone will go to see the movie, and popular music theater will gain many more converts.

Comments: Dear Sir, I have only the greatest respect for you and your musicals. My favorite being The Phantom of the Opera. I went to see it myself starring the Canadian cast and only dream of seeing it with the original English cast. When I saw Phantom about 9 years ago it inspired me to want to learn how to sing. I now take vocal lessons with a local composer and my favorite choices are your shows. Please I implore you to put Michael Crawford in the role of the Phantom in the upcoming movie. It would be my lifelong dream that I could pass on to my children. I listen to your compositions everyday and consider myself a great admirer of your work. I truly believe that Antonio Banderas as the Phantom would be a grave mistake! I saw him perform at your birthday and he's really not very good. He lacks the emotions, drama and vocal talent. Antonio could never be remembered for his voice! My friends and family and I believe, that Michael Crawford could never disappoint you with his performance. Thank you, from Stephanie Labbe.

Comments: I just can't imagine why the honorable Lord Webber is doing this. Does he just expect us all to forget about how he claimed that popular music theater was so precious and important, so that he can turn around and hire a Hollywood big shot to take the place of popular music theater's greatest star? Hell will freeze over before anyone who has ever heard Michael Crawford sing will take this quietly! There is no reason for the original Phantom to be replaced. If Webber is worried about drawing in the cash, then he can cast Banderas as Raoul and attract just as many people, plus all loyal Crawford fans. There is simply no logical reason for this hypocrisy.

Comments: The phantom is not a popular sex symbol. He is an outcast, and he appeals to everyone in the world who has ever felt rejected and alone. You cannot take a mask, put it on a man with the body of a Greek god, and expect everyone to pity him. It would be too fake, as if he's up there saying, "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful!" The Phantom is the champion of the rejects of society whose inner beauty the world will never know because of it's cruel lack of faith and sympathy, and Michael Crawford embodies that Phantom. Indeed, Sir Webber, your rejection of him makes that fact more and more apparent. The Phantom belongs to the outcasts, and we want him to be Michael Crawford, now and forever. Sir Webber, you know what you must do to get this movie right.

Comments: First of all, let me say that I love your music, Lord Webber. I'm paticularly fond of your Requiem, in which Placido Domingo is simply magnificent! The moment I heard the Kyrie I was sure that you must be someone with a true love for beautiful music. But now that I hear of this scheme to cast a star from Hollywood to bring in more money, I am completely aghast! You are selling your soul if you do this. Banderas in Evita was comprehendible, but Banderas as the Phantom is out of the question. If you are sure you can not get along without your pretty-boy big name star, then give him the role of Piangi; at least that would make sense. But do nothing to the Phantom. It was an act of pure genious to cast Mr. Crawford in the role originally, he is absolutely perfect in the role: it is foolish and wrong to mess with perfection. You're selling your soul, spurning your admirers, and forsaking the essence of Music.

Comments: If everyone adopted Webber's criterion of sex-symbols only, Webber himself would not have lasted in musical theater for a second. It is time for him to pay the debt he owes to the theater audiences by giving us our Phantom, Michael Crawford, and no other. And those who have never been to the theater deserve to experience musical talent at its best. Webber should have faith in his own music (unaltered and written the way it was meant to be) to make this movie hit it big. He owes it to everyone to preserve this musical as it should be.

Comments: Lord Webber, if you go through with this treacherous plot to seat a Hollywooder on Music's throne, you will go down in history as the dirtiest traitor to popular music theater that ever lived! You owe your career, your estate, your success to us, the theater-goers. So all of a sudden, now that you've discovered Hollywood, you may decide that you don't need us anymore. Well maybe we may just decide that we don't need you. Maybe, when your pathetic star-studded movie flops miserably and you come crying back to the theater, maybe we won't take you back. The choice is yours, Lord Webber: either preserve the original theatrical Phantom on film, reward the theater-goers that paved your way of success, and make everyone happy for ages to come, or rebel against all that popular music theater stands for, take the mushy-middle that pleases no one, and face the dire consequences. See that you choose wisely.

Comments: Dear Sir Mr. Lloyd Webber: My name is Jill. I am nineteen years old. In the summer of 1987, when I was six years old, a phenomenon known as "The Phantom of the Opera" entered my family's living room. Those two tapes got well worn that summer; that was the only thing I wanted to listen to all day. All I wanted to be for Halloween that year was Christine Daae. I loved it so much mostly because of the Phantom himself. Michael Crawford. "Music of the Night" was like a lullaby for me; I almost always wanted to fall asleep at the sound of his voice. Of course, I listen to it now and fall in love with the voice, just like Christine must have. And his laughter before the chandelier falls still scares me. Sir, I am not trying to tell you how to manage your musical, and I am not trying to change your mind, but I cannot picture Antonio Banderas as the Phantom. To me, Mr. Banderas is a pretty boy who strikes poses and takes off his shirt in order to make the girls swoon. All Michael Crawford has to do is sing--he doesn't have to take off his clothes!--and I'm on the floor. See? I think Michael Crawford was so genuine in the role of the Phantom, and I think it would be such a privilege for me and millions of Phantom fans round the world to see his performance bought to the screen. (Seeing as how most of us sorely missed out on it by not living in London, New York, or L.A. at the time of 'Phantomania.') Please grant a six-year-old-now-turned-nineteen her wish, and send her and many other six-year-olds to come the real Angel of Music--Michael Crawford. Thank you.

Comments: hello, i think your a great composer, but i do want to say that wb and yourself are making a huge mistake by putting ab as the phantom. he is indeed a great actor but remember the phantom is from paris and having someone with a spanish accent would totally not be a very good movie cause everyone knows phantom has a french accent. if you do decide to have him you might as well call it phantom of the opera in mexico and not shoot the film in paris cause it just doesn't match. sarah and michael make a good duet together and he isn't that old remember he has a mask on. sorry if i'm being sarcastic but i'm trying to make a point to ya. you have to admitt michael still has that intense and wonderful voice. i don't think you will get any good reviews maybe a little but not many. ab is a good singer too. but not a good match. take my word. hope you're not angry with this, i'm just trying to get my point across. have a nice day and do think about this whatever you decide is still ok it's your movie but i would consider this. thank you and god bless you.

Comments: Dear Sir, At twenty years old, I'm proud to say that I've grown up on your music and proud to say I've been a phantom fan since its release. However, having been such a long-time and loyal admirer, I can't even find the words to say how disgusted I am at the choice of Banderas over Crawford. Why? Enlighten all of us fans because I don't think any of us can understand how such an obviously poor casting choice could have been made. Just tell us it's a mistake and it will be immediately fixed, because that's really the only reason I can understand for such a strange and distasteful decision. Certainly you aren't thinking that the role of Che is anywhere near equal to the role of our beloved Phantom. They aren't even in the same class! Of course, this is all your creation and so it's your choice, but it would be wonderful if you could try to keep in mind that we as Phantom/Crawford fans are the reason your musical is popular enough to be made into a movie and if you betray the man or the character, it's the same as betraying us and we may very well opt not to pay money to see the Phantom character being destroyed. Thanks for your time.

Comments: Dear Lloyd Webber, Like I have said in my last e-mail nobody can take the place of Michael Crawford. Give him a try because he was the best Phantom there ever has been. Why would you want a different Phantom when Michael Crawford made everything so good? Please think about what everybody is talking about because alot of people have gone to see Phantom of the Opera so many times and it is ridiculous that you would want to get rid of him so fast. What is this new play going to be about anyway? I think that it should be a sequel to the first one. Please talk to Michael Crawford and ask him to be the Phantom. I think that if Antonio Banderas is going to play the Phantom then you are going to loose alot of fans. Yes, Antonio Banderas was good in Evita but that is because it had parts that he could sing. What makes you think he can play the Phantom? How good does he sound. To me at your 51st birthday last year Antonio Banderas sang with Sarah Brightman and he really didn't sound that good it was okay but he didn't sound as good as Michael Crawford. Take this into suggestion please. Thank You, Katharine A. Leonard

Comments: Mr. Webber, I think that you should find somebody else to play the Phantom because nobody really can take the spot of Michael Crawford or your x-wife.Who will play the Phantom? What about Christine? Why did you divorce Sarah I thought that you were a great couple? Good Luck in your new film or play. Please tell me that Antonio Banderas is not playing the Phantom because it will be really weird and strange for everybody who likes the Phantom of the Opera. I love Phantom of the Opera and I always will.

Comments: I'm sure you will have a great influence on the making of the Phantom movie. Please, please use Michael Crawford. He is THE PHANTOM. I have seen the show three times on Broadway and still feel he is the ONLY true Phantom. Millions of fans will be greatly disappointed if he isn't cast and I'm sure millions of fans will boycott the movie as I know I will if he is not.

Comments: Dear Lloyd Webber, As a fan of Michael Crawford and of The Phantom I would like to say in his defense...."What are you thinking?" Antonio sounds wonderful in Evita...then again the accent is perfect. But, as the Phantom?....As a passionate, loving, evil yet gentle character...and Antonio is set to play him?? Hearing him sing with the wonderful Sarah Brightman in the Birthday Celebration brought tears to my eyes out of sorrow for Mr. Crawford. I am a performer, I sing, I act. I know that certain roles and songs can only be done by certain people. This Role of the phantom should be done by Mr. Crawford.

Comments: Dear Sir A. L. Webber, Last year, I attended "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Wisconsin's Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Though I am thirteen and at an age where I should be listening to rap, pop, etc., I find your music and other theater music to be much more rewarding to the ear. My brother, Joseph, has always had an interest in the performing arts and aspires to be an on-stage actor. I have had similar hopes though my voice is not particularly good nor trained enough to sing like any of your Phantoms have done. I am telling you this because I want you to know that I trust your judgment, as far as the casting of your own play, as regards your up-coming movie, though, like many, I don't understand why you don't prefer Michael Crawford as the role of Phantom. It just made more sense to me than casting a man renown for his looks, not his voice, as the part of a deformed, old man. After all, Michael Crawford is the perfect age and is a veteran of the Phantom part. But it is your movie, Sir Andrew, and I have no say in the matter. Yours sincerely, Michael Knaapen

Comments: Dear ALW, I must say that I' shocked and dismayed that it appears that Antonio Banderas will be playing the title role of the Phantom of the Opera in the fil version of your wonderful stage play. Mr. Banderas was an excellent choice as Che in "Evita", but really, Che and the Phantom could not be more different in just about every way imaginable, and that's just one of the reasons that I believe that this is WAY beyond a bad casting move. Where is artistic integrity? If Mr. Banderas is going to be playing Erik, I'd expect loud and noisy protest from around the world, not to mention boycotts of the Phantom and your other works. At the very least, a person who has played the Phantom on stage, if not Michael Crawford, then somebody like Jeff Hyslop, would be a much better choice. Please consider these ideas as alternatives. Thank you very much, an ardent Canadian Phantom supporter, Michelle Gouin

Comments: Is it just me? I have been off the net over a month and I return to read such interesting updates to Recent News on phantommovie.com. Antonio Bandit made a statement that he has awaited roles like Phantom for over twentyfive years? Once upon a time in Merry Olde England, there existed a child star who worked hard to improve his art on both sides of the Atlantic. He made headway in the mid-sixties in two major movies: 'Hello, Dolly!' and 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'. He earned the Phantom role twenty years later. Yes, Mr Bandit was correct in that Mr Crawford was a superb Phantom in London. He just defended the Phantom's fans argument that Mr Crawford should continue in the role. Lord Lloyd Webber, listen to how the man you want as Phantom describes the man who should be the Phantom. I missed the opportunity to vote in the phantommovie.com's poll of the future movie. Personally, I would like to see a film of a live stage production. 'Barnum' was so great when I saw how quickly Mr Crawford recovered from bloopers. The storyline would lose its romantic and eerie atmosphere if a major production with all the special effects were made. There is such magic in theatre. Theatre leaves more to the imagination than the cinematic productions, especially when one sits so high and back that if the seat were any further back, it would be in the upper-level mezanine.

Comments: I feel that only a man who has played the Phantom live on stage can truely portray the tragic story of The Phantom of the Opera. I think Michael Crawford is very deserving of the role, because after all, he origionated that role! I think that he should be allowed to be captured forever so that decades from now, people can still watch this video and remember how great of a Phantom he was! A video would not take away from ticket sales of Live Performances, and if it were a good video, it might increase the ticket sales. I don't think that anyone from Hollywood could ever be convincing in the role of Erik, I think that this movie needs a man who knows the role, and can make it his own: I would love to see a man who has actually played the Phantom role cast in the Phantom movie, and I am not the only one who feels this way... Please take into consideration my opinions. I look forward to seeing your new musical, The Beautiful Game, next summer, and I think it is a great tragety that CATS is closing this Sunday! I can't wait for the Phantom movie, and I hope to see someone who knows the role cast as the Phantom! Thank you so much, Julie

Comments: I am a BIG fan of the PHANTOM and i must say that Michael Crawford MUST play the Phantom. It is sooooooo obvious that Michael is the best phantom ever, so why cast Antonio B? I know he is a good singer but he would be much better playing Roul. This way you can have two great performers playing two main roles. This means that everyone will be happy and there will be no arguments. You KNOW it makes sense. Michael even wants to play the role so hurry up and cast him or your movie will be an all time flop. I can guaranty that!

Comments: Dear Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber: I am a huge Phan of all your musicals, my favorite being "The Phantom of the Opera". I have seen the show live once on tour and once at the Majestic. I have listened to the Original London Cast CD countless times, memorized the libretto, and am an adoring Phan of both Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Both times I saw the show the actors playing the role of Erik were nothing compared to Michael Crawford. Erik was portrayed as rather violent, aggressive, and bitter, which couldn't be further from the truth. But the score is so powerful, passionate, and brilliantly crafted that I still enjoyed the show tremendously. Charles Hart's lyrics are nothing short of pure inspiration, and Gillian Lynne's choreography draws you into the performance. I understand that you are in an incredibly difficult situation, being pressured by Warner Brothers management, and Crawford's Phans, among other people, while trying to maintain the artistic integrity of your masterpiece. Here is what I would do if I were in your position: 1. Ask Warner Brothers if they would be willing to run the show starring Michael Crawford. If they say "no", dump them and go with a company who will. 2. Call Crawford's agent and offer whatever salary would be necessary get Crawford to sign the contract for the lead role. (The Tenth Anniversary Performance of "Les Miserables" was such a success because of Colm Wilkinson and the rest of the brilliant company, featuring many original London and Broadway cast members; Phantom deserves and requires equal preservation of Original Cast performers in the leading roles.) 3. Offer the role of Raul to Michael Ball and the role of Piangi to Luciano Pavarotti. (wouldn't you agree they have big enough names and voices for any conceivable movie-musical?) Michael Ball has the right voice range for the part of Raul and proved he can sing "All I Ask of You" brilliantly at your Royal Albert Hall Birthday Celebration, not to mention he looks the part. Pavarotti would be perfect as Piangi: he's portly, has a beard, dark hair, and an adorably thick Italian accent on his English, not to mention that voice! 4. Hire Ian Adam to oversee all the singing done in the movie and have him personally work with every cast member, from principles to extras. 5. Get a professional opera singer to play Carlotta, not a Hollywood actress; include as many real opera singers as possible, since that suits the music well and is the setting of the story. 6. I absolutely wouldn't change the key or lyrics of any of the main songs, especially "Angel of Music (the Mirror)", "Phantom of the Opera", or "Music of the Night". 7. Try to get either Harold Prince or the one and only Trevor Nunn to direct the movie. Consider his track record. He wrote the lyrics for two of the most powerful (and famous) songs you've ever written: Music of the Night and Memory. He's directed hit musicals from Starlight Express to Les Miserables to Cats, plus he has film experience. He's also worked extensively with Lynne and Bjornson, which would be invaluable for adapting the choreography, staging, costumes, and sets for the screen. 8. Refuse to allow any cuts, additions, or alterations to be made to the libretto without the consent of Charles Hart, and prevent the conversion of any sung lines into spoken dialogue. 9. Choose someone with the ballet experience and voice quality of Sarah Brightman to play Christine if she is not available. I understand and would share your desire to choose someone who looks Christine's age, but keep in mind that Sarah Brightman looks over twenty years younger than her real age, which is probably true of a few other actresses as well. 10. Consider four options for filming the movie: Release a tape of the Original London Cast performing at Her Majesty's, or if no suitable tapes had been made, I might: Film it like Cats: onstage but not live, with a dream cast from different companies of Phantom. But, most likely I would: Put on a live Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration on October 9th, 2001 featuring the entire original script and score of Phantom, Starring Michael Crawford (like what they did for Les Miserables, only with Maria Bjornson's breathtaking sets) and have it taped, for those who wish this legendary musical immortalized in the setting for which it was made: the theatre. I would also make a film version. Since nearly every scene in both the book and the musical take place either indoors or at night, I would seize the opportunity to have it filmed on location, at the Paris Opera House, during off hours when no one is there, and have sets built (at a studio) for the scenes inside Erik's home beneath the Opera House. Perhaps if it was filmed at the time of year when the underground lake is partially drained, even the boat scene of the title song could be filmed on the actual lake. Because the look of this film version, which I would release on big screen, would be so different from the theatre sets, it would not detract from the ticket sales of the live productions of Phantom worldwide. In either case, to get a bigger sound, invite back all the cast members from various companies of Phantom, so that songs involving the entire cast, such as Masquerade, could be done with hundreds of great singers, all in costume. This would also heighten the effect of already powerful scenes like the mob in the finale. It would help if the audience could actually see the mob, and this massive chorus would highlight the irrationally cruel treatment Erik has experienced for a lifetime. 11. Unlike Raul, Erik is not controlling, and he would actually rather have Christine tell him what to do, even though he is a very emotionally strong person and a natural leader, because he adores her so much. For this key characteristic to shine through as clearly as possible, a few lines should be replaced with something Erik would be more likely to say. It is absolutely ingenious that you used the theme from the intro of Point of No Return as a transition between the title song and Music of the Night; however, Erik is far too shy and humble to even consider saying something like: "You have come here for one purpose and one alone, since the moment I first heard you sing, I have needed you with me to serve me, to sing, for my music, my music". I'm sure Charles Hart could come up with something that fit the melody just as well (definitely including the "You have come here" for the foreshadowing effect) that would illuminate Erik's true personality to the audience. Also, I think the line "Your chains are still mine, you will sing for me" is extremely clever, but not something Erik would say. Perhaps it could be replaced with something equally relevant to the necklace or engagement ring, but with the ridicule directed more towards Raul, since he's the one who deserves it anyway. 12. Ensure that no one other than Michael Reed conducts the orchestra for the film. 13. Despite the intentionally clashing chords, the theme for Don Juan Triumphant is truly beautiful, but is not sufficiently convincing of Erik's genius as a composer, which is central to his character. Polishing this song up a bit, especially making all the chords go harmoniously together, would paint a truer picture of Erik's musical abilities. Similar modifications are also essential to the scene when Christine awakes from her fainting spell and is mesmerized by hearing Erik play the organ, just before she removes his mask. 14. Have Cameron Mackintosh, or yourself, produce the video, not someone from Warner Brothers who has no Musical Theatre experience. Michael Crawford is the perfect actor to play the role of Erik in the Phantom movie. He has an unbelievable vocal range, and a velvety smooth, seamless quality to his voice. He never "performs" the part; it's as though he becomes Erik. He makes you feel as if Michael disappears and you are standing in the very presence of the Angel of Music. He brings to life everything that makes Erik a wonderful person: his passion, power, nobility, bearing, refinement, genius, sensitivity, sweetness, humility, gentleness, and his all-pervasive commanding presence. This is the Erik that Leroux created and immortalized, not a Phantom cheapened by the addition of horror and distortion of the plot. Crawford looks the part more than any other you will ever find. His muscular physique coupled with those beautiful blue eyes that can catch a beam of light in the darkness and reflect it, shining as if by their own radiance, as Erik's albino eyes must have done, is beyond comparison. Even his hands seem ideal for the part: strong, but not too thick of fingers. His understanding of Erik's thoughts and feelings is unparalleled. Michael Crawford also possesses the most important quality of all for the lead role in Phantom: a deep compassion and great respect for the ultimate character. Antonio Banderas, although an excellent actor, possesses none of these qualities, not to mention that if the actor who portrays Erik is going to have a foreign accent, it ought to be French. No one will think he is sexy buried under all those layers of the costume (and cape), latex makeup, and a mask. If Erik were visually sexy, Raul wouldn't have had a chance, so this would destroy the logic of the plot; it's Erik's voice and personality that are attractive. I wouldn't want to see Crawford in Evita anymore than I want to see Banderas in Phantom. Some people are just not made for some roles. Banderas portrays egotistical, bitter, angry characters brilliantly, whereas Crawford gives his most stunning performances in tragic roles. His longing, anguish, and agony wrench your heart and touch your soul. (Watch and listen to him sing Gethsemane sometime and see if you can avoid being convinced that he's going to start sweating blood any minute.) You are not yet "Past the Point of No Return", and even if Banderas has already signed the contract, he would probably rather be paid not to be in the Phantom movie. As the creator of such a glorious musical, I know you'll listen to your own artistic intuition rather than external pressure. I invite you to take a challenge: invite both Antonio Banderas and Michael Crawford over to your estate or studio (preferably at different times), get someone to play Music of the Night who knows it by heart or play it yourself, and listen to each of them sing this great song, adjusted for their respective voices. Turn out all the lights, and just absorb the sound. If you then cast whichever of these two men mesmerizes your mind and captures your heart, you'll have chosen the one and only person who will get fifty eight million adoring Phans to see, recommend, and purchase your epic film. He alone can make Erik's song take flight. Let him make the Music of the Night. Forever a Phan, Lisa (e-mail: CB4260@yahoo.com)

Comments: Dear Sir, It has come to my attention that you intend to film my life story for all to see on the motion picture screen. This intention met with my approval. But upon hearing that a certain Mr. Banderas was to essay my role, I was to say the least displeased. Mr. Crawford's portrayal did meet with my favor and Ms. Brightman was quite charming in the role as Christine. It was my understanding that these two performers would be chosen to play the roles on celluloid. Therefore you will comply with my wishes and begin posthaste to film my story with the aforementioned thespians. Should this not occur a disaster beyond your imagination will occur! Comments: Dear Mr. Webber, I admire your work very greatly! You have marvelous talent for composing and story, you simply need a little help with your casting skills. Crawford is the most well-known, and probably, best loved Phantom. It would be unwise, from my point of veiw, to deny the phans what they want, especially speaking as a phan myself. Not only do you risk a major boycot, I know many people who would be willing to cause unpeaceful turmoil, if Senior Bandaras is cast. Besides, who do you think is going to purchase this movie most? Some female teenage prep who cares for nothing but looks and status? No! This musical is only truly understood by the phans! We are the ones who will buy! Even if you managed to find some screaming chicka that has gone Bandaras crazy, is it really worth ruining an entire film so that some girl with no appreciation for the music, (which wouldn't be sung by Senior Bandaras properly anyhow) and no appreciation for the drama and tenderness of the story and character of the Phantom can sit there and stare mindlessly and drool over Bandaras? If so, how on earth can you show your face in a creative circle again! Theatre is about art, and love of that art, not money made at the cheapening of that art. You would do wisely to remember thusly! I remain, your obedient servant, OG

Comments: You have the perfect Raoul: Antonio Banderas. Handsome, young man that the audience can "see". He doesn't need a great singing voice for this role and yet he would be one of the leading characters. Michael Crawford has proven night after night that he is the best choice for the role of Phantom. He puts such emotion into his wonderful voice; his body language expresses the phantom that although hideous on the outside he is loved by the audience. Michael Crawford gave the phantom life in the stage version and he'll steal the hearts of the audience in the film version. If Michael Crawford isn't in the movie, please film a theatrical version starring Michael Crawford for true fans of the phantom. Then I wouldn't care what kind of a movie was made; although I'm sure you'll find an audience -- it just wouldn't be me.

Comments: Dear Andrew The only positive I can see in not casting Michael Crawford as the Phantom of the Opera is that movie goers will not be forced to wait for hours in record queues to see their idol. I have seen many different versions of The Phantom of the Opera, and quite frankly they did little for me, which just goes to prove "THAT YOU ALONE CAN MAKE MY SONG TAKE FLIGHT"!!!! Listen to the people, the ones that will or will not fill the cinemas. Public opinion polls are a very powerful marketing tool.

I have also seen Michael Crawford live in concert several times and consider him not just a consumate performer but a genuinely warm and giving performer of remarkable skill. I would ask you to use your influence or final controlling power to have Michael chosen to play the lead in any movie version of Phantom which may be made. Given that Michael was the original Phantom and the one who started the musical on its path to fame it would be only appropriate for him to play the movie Phantom. I feel I am expressing the views of countless Phantom fans. Yours sincerely, Richard Stevens.

Comments: I am a very large fan of musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber's. I don't know if he'll read this or not. I'm 13 and only became a Phantom of the Opera fan just a few months ago. I heard the soundtrack from a friend. I happen to hear Music of the Night. I asked who was singing and my friend said Michael Crawford. Since thenI have come to love the musical and all who have worked on it. I have seen Michael Crawford perform the role of the phantom, but like many others i have the cd with Mr. Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Because I have never seen Michael actually perform the role or Antonio Banderas play the role I can't say one is better. I can say that Michael deserves the role because he made the Phantom role special. If he hadn't made the role that way maybe nobody would care if he got the role or not. But people do. I urge you to realize that Michael Crawford helped make the Phantom of the Opera a success. There are young fans like myself who would love to see Michael perform as the phantom. Although a movie isn't the same effect as a stage it would still be wonderful for people to be able to see the first man to play the phantom in your musical years from now!

Comments: I am an avid fan of yours. I don't know if you'll ever read this but I want to give my support to the campaign. I want a Phantom of the Opera movie. I live in a place where you cannot see plays whenever you want to. I can see the selected tour plays that come to a nearby city. That's where I saw Phantom with Ted Keegan (who did a wonderful job). I would love to be able to see a movie that's true to the original script with M. Crawford in it. He captures the part of the Phantom and is the best of them all. It isn't fair that those of us who live in a small town because we cannot see the plays that we want to. I would love to see Phantom again espically with Crawford, but that is close to impossible unless we get a movie with him in it. I love the play The Phantom of the Opera and I think it is a genious addaptation of the book. The music and story are very powerful, but you have to cast some one who can deliver the power of those two things and Crawford can do that to perfection! Antonio Banderas was the perfect Che but he cannot sing the part of the Phantom like Crawford can. Please make the script into a movie with Michael Crawford in it. I also love your other plays. I have seen a Cats on tour play and it was extremely good. I would like to see Starlight Express. The Cats and Joseph movies were very good and I am glad they were made. I thought the Evita movie was a great production. I liked the Royal Albert Hall Celebration. I would like to go to NYC and see the Jesus Christ Superstar revival. I am now anticipating the soundtrack (if there is one) to The Beautiful Game. All of your plays are really great (I do like music to them all) and I hope that I can see a Phantom movie very soon!

I'm writing you this letter to try to persuad you to get Michael Crawford to play the role in the movie version of your musical "Thy Phantom of the Opera". Me myself have not yet seen the musical but have the soundtrack and play it to death. Mr. crawford has been an inspiration to me. He has inspiried me to do the musical when I get older which is something that I really want to do. I think that if he was good enough to do the musical he should do the movie. I really think he would be a whole lot better than Antonio Bandres. Don't get me wrong Mr. Bandres is a great actor, but I think Mr. Crawford would do better. So, please Mr. Webber if Michael does this I would truly be Greatful to you. And would definetly come to see the movie. I hope that my words change your mind to get him to do it. Thank you very much. Comments: DEAR SIR, I have been a follower of your many fine musicals for many years, and have seen just about all of them. But my VERY FAVORITE is "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA," it is in my opinion one of the very best play and musical that you have done. The casting was perfect, and the musical score was beautiful and haunting. I and many other people would like to see you recreate that same thing in the upcoming movie. Don't "rethink it", or change a thing in it and certainly not the beautiful music. It makes the storyline all the more enjoyable and it delivers just the right flavor to the storyline. As you also know the right casting and music produce a fantastic movie as well as a play. Think what your "rethink" did to EVITA, when you wanted big Hollywood type names with big egos and pocketbooks to go with it. It was not the Big box office sell you thought it would be. in fact it failed miserably, and that you had Madonna and Antonio Banderas, neither were oscar contenders. Even Zorro failed to make the grade. Why ruin such a beautiful, haunting play and love story like the Phantom with bad casting and the music? It does not make good sense. Did you know that the Phantom was a living, breathing, human being? And your perfect cast of the play, Michael Crawford, envisioned what and how the phantom must have walked, talked, and felt. Mr. Crawford did that performance 1300 times to perfection, and his concerts still bring rave reviews worldwide, does Mr. Banderas? Has he been operatic trained to sing the music, that the role commands? I think not. and Michael is physically fit to recreate his role. His voice is perfect and his age is just right. DO NOT DESTROY YOUR ONLY MASTERPIECE with someone who has no training vocally, or done the role 1300 times. IT WILL FAIL MISERABLY, LIKE EVITA, AND ZORRO, AND YOUR OTHER JCS. sincerely yours, Joyce Cebular

Comments: Lord Lloyd Webber, I strongly ask you to reconsider the idea of casting Antonio Banderas in the role of the Phantom. I adamantly opposed it before I even heard him sing, and now that I have heard him sing on your birthday celebration, I oppose it even more. Mr. Banderas is all wrong for the role of the Phantom. He does not have the voice for it, it is much too high. And, the fact of the matter is, with every note he sings, his accent shines through. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the story take place in Paris? Antonio Bamderas' accent doesn't quite fit in with the locale. Honestly, he does not sound like an Angel to me. Please, Lord Lloyd Webber, you must seriously contemplate casting Michael Crawford once again as the Phantom. There was a reason you cast him originally. Try to remember why that was, because that is the reason you should cast him again. You don't need some big Hollywood name for the movie. Your name is a big enough draw to the box office.I guarentee that if you cast Michael, I will spend enough money going to the show again and again that I will be in debt for the rest of my life. Please. I was never fortunate enough to see Mr Crawford as the Phantom and that thought eats away at me every time it comes to mind. Which is a fairly often. Watching my copy of Michael Crawford in Concert, when he sings songs from your musical, I close my eyes and I do not hear Michael Crawford. I hear the voice of Christine's Angel of Music. I hear the Phantom. Michelle PS While I have you, I would also like to suggest Michael Ball in the role of Raoul. I honestly feel he'd be perfect.

Comments: Dear Mr. Lloyd Webber, Having been a long time fan of your work, from Joseph through Cats and up to Sunset Blvd., I was distraught to hear that Antonio Banderas was to be playing the Phantom in the movie version of Phantom. The actor who made your fans believe that he was the Phantom is and was Michael Crawford. It was his mixture of singing and tortured body movements that allowed the audience to feel the actual presence of the Phantom. I have seen Michael, Davis Gaines, and Robert Gillaume play the role and the one who captured the essence of Erik was Mr, Crawford. As a fan of yours, I ask that you cast THE Phantom Michael Crawford as Erik in the film version.

Comments: M'Lord, Have you any idea how much longer this fiasco will continue? Are you in truth trying to prolong the contretemps until you can fullfil Mr Crawford's prediction that by the time POTO is on the roll, he will be playing the Phantom's grandfather? I would imagine based on your fans behaviour that you would want to resolve this muck to their satisfaction. After the success of the CATS video and the positive reactions to the Joseph and His Amazing Technicolored Coat video, that people would prefer a simplistic approach to the film anyway. Keep the music as is! Keep the cast as is! Get your rear in gear and put your money where your integrity is. Present the film as a theatrical production and introduce novices to the theatre.

Comments: Mr. Lloyd Webber, I am a huge fan of all of your musicals! I adore them! And Phantom of the Opera is my very favorite of them all, the first one I ever saw on stage. I would simply love to see Michael Crawford perform in the role of Phantom from what I have seen and read about him, he is the god of the Phantoms. I also think that the way Cats was recorded onto homevideo is just wonderful. I feel almost as if I am in the theatre myself when I watch that Cats video. I am wholeheartedly supporting the making of a Phantom movie with the star Michael Crawford, but I think it might be even more of a success if it were recorded for Cats. I realize this might not be possible, but I do think that would better portray the agony of the story, it would show the audience little details they may have missed when they went and saw Phantom, it would capture all of the magic of your wonderful opera for anyone who wished to live through it again and again. I know quite a few friends and myself who would be overjoyed to own Phantom of the Opera if it were recorded as Cats was. We already own Cats, and view it quite often! Phantom of the Opera is my very favorite musical ever, and Cats is second. I am actually in the midst of planning a trip to watch them both again. I think that recording Phantom as you recorded Cats would not bring down the traffic to the theatres. Watching a movie is one thing, but going and seeing it yourself firsthand on the stage is an experience that I never ever forget, it is not to be replaced by anything. I think that your fans all over the world would really enjoy seeing Michael Crawford casted as the Phantom. He was, after all, the origional Phantom, and who better to play the Phantom in your movie, which will be watched 50 years from now by young people, wishing they could have seen Michael Crawford live, but all the same very greatful that he was recorded, and saved forever. I think that it would bring about more lasting business than a Hollywood star would if you casted Michael Crawford, I know I would enjoy it a lot more. Once more, I would like to suggest that Phantom be recorded as Cats was, so that the magic of the theatre itself will never be forgotten. I love Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and all of your other musicals, and I am incredably happy that they are all so successful! One day, I hope there will be a wonderful Phantom movie that captures the magic of the incredibly wonderful story for all to see. I wish you the best of luck with the Phantom movie, and with your new musical, The Beautiful Game!

Comments: My Dear Lord Webber, Daylight surrenders itself to an enchanting evening. Twilight brings with it darkness and the darkness offers a promise of sweet perfection. Draped in mystery and cape he appears to us, sadly adorning a mask to hide his shame and vile appearance. Then his concealed magnificence comes forth through music. Music so alluring that he captures not only a prodigy, but an entire world. At his feet the world feel, weeping, prasing his talents. They spoke of passion and pain and of a voice so glorious that it was unlike anyother. They came from near and far to enter into this bliss that darkness shrouds. And come they shall, to the venues again and again, to experience sweet perfection. At the unmasking we find an appreciative Michael Crawford. Talents finally realized by a spellbound audience. What's this? Sweet perfection gone a miss? My dear Lord Webber, don't let the spell be broken! Continue the illusion of Phantom with the mesmerizing talents of Mr. Crawford. As the audience, we require him. We need him to continue in this global seduction. Speak your name...who do we see? Speak of "Phantom"...who do we see? Are we blind? Deaf? Unaware? WE SPEAK, PLEASE LISTEN. Hollywood will then behold the great Andrew Lloyd Webber and the world will be yours. Thank you for giving us Phantom twice. Stage and Screen applaud you.

Comments: Dear Lord Webber, as a guest in my friends house and she informed me of your decision, to cast Mr. Antonio Banderas, as "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA", I was appalled at your decision to do this, it discredits you as a producer, and it is a total disgrace to destroy the artistic integrity of the play and the novelle, it is a true masterpiece, and a classic at that. To cast anyone other than Mr. Michael Crawford in the role lead would indeed be sacreligious, to the music, the performer, the novelle, and especially to the multitude of fans that have seen the orginal play and came to their knees and to their feet applauding Mr. Crawfords stage presence, and his muscial range, his emotions, and the feeling in telling the story that made one a believer in the anguish of the character in needing love and acceptance. In my opinion sir, no other performer could do the part justice like MR. CRAWFORD. IF YOU INSIST ON Mr. Banderas, then cast him as the viscount. Sincerely, Thomas Connor

Comments: Dear Andrew Lloyd Webber, Let me commence by saying that I think you're an enormously talented composer. To be honest, you're the reason why I became fascinated with musicals. Before, I used to think they were silly, boring, and yes,,,wimpy little things. But after the one fateful night when I first heard your music, I was enthralled with what I was hearing. I realized how precious musicals and operas really are. I fell in love with your compositions, starting purchasing all your CD's...always looking forward to playing them. Though loving all your musicals, the Phantom of the Opera is the one I most deeply treasure! It's a superb story...brought to live by your music and...MICHAEL CRAWFORD!! He understands the character like no other actor/singer does. The Man is Erik. You know that ;) and the masses agree! I'm still looking forward to seeing the definitve film version of the Phantom of the Opera. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and starring the greatest male voice in the planet, Crawford! I don't know if you know this, but you're getting more and more popular with people around my age (I'm 17!!!!) and we all are going to be terribly disappointed if this doesn't happen. Cast the man you know has the understanding, emotion, energy, and proven capability of making PHANTOM an outstanding success. Cast Michael as the film's Phantom and you will have made the best decision, financially and aritistically, in your life!! If you don't cast him, well...personally you will have lost the respect of your fan. Love, Frank Saenz. and same thoughts from Ian and Sally Sayers!!

Comments: I am one of thousands of admirers world-wide who is concerned about the future “Phantom of the Opera” film. I have attended and participated in musical theater over the past 25 years, have seen some abysmal shows, some good shows, and luckily, a few truly great shows. None, however, moved me the way that one particular performance of “Phantom of the Opera” affected me. On my second visit to the show’s run at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, I saw the play in an entirely different light thanks to the talents of Michael Crawford. Mr. Crawford made the difference between a pleasant, lovely spectacle and an emotionally involving, experience breathtaking experience. From the first moment he appeared through the mirror, my companion and I were as bedazzled as the character of Christine. Seeing the way he used every stylized bit of business to interpret the character was amazing. From the grace and fluidity of his panther like body movement in the first act, to his visible shrinking at the denouement was a revelation. In addition, that voice---every person in the audience understood the character’s fear, desire, lust, anger, frustration, despair and redemption because of Mr. Crawford’s facile use of his instrument. Never before and never since have I been privileged to witness such a brilliant actor in a role that seemed tailor made for his unique talents. Recently, the New York Times ran an analysis of your past works and predicted which works would be playing in the future. “Phantom” was considered a borderline possibility. My personal feeling on the reason that it was classified thus is that all hinges on the actor playing the role of the Phantom. After having seen the show several more times, I realize that a poor interpretation of the character ruined my enjoyment of the performance. We all know that the nature of theater requires new actors stepping into roles over time, and I have no qualms over that issue. The nature of film is quite a different beast, and one actor has one chance to interpret a role that millions around the world will view as the ONLY interpretation of a role. That is why I join thousands to implore you to honor your original commitment to Mr. Crawford and ensure that he is cast as the Phantom in the upcoming film. He was your first choice, and your best choice for all three openings, and thanks to his groundwork, he helped bring you your greatest success in the theater. One can only believe that he will do the same for your film version. I understand your reasons for wanting to please your spouse, and also for a crowd pleasing name at the box office, but you can attract droves of young ladies by using Ricky Martin or some other hunk of the month in the role of Raoul. Please reconsider, Lord Lloyd-Webber. By using Mr. Crawford, you will ensure that your original vision of the character (who has been alluded to as your alter-ego in some respects) will be immortalized on film, and you will have a true film success to your credit. Thank you for your time and consideration. Bethanie M. Rayburn

Comments: Dear Lord Webber First of all, let me thank you for the Phantom. It is the most moving production I have ever seen in my life. Comments: Mr. Webber, I really need to know, who are you trying to reach with the film version of the Phantom that you are talking about doing? You are rethinking, recasting and rewriting songs for who? The movie you are talking about in interviews and on tv shows is not even "The Phantom of the Opera". If you have new songs and a totally different idea, why don't you just write a totally different musical, call it something else, cast whoever in it and leave The Phantom alone. We are your fans and I think we deserve an explanation. If you are trying to reach a younger crowd(by the way there are plenty of young people who like the Phantom just the way it is) or people who have no interest in the Phantom(and you think your movie will interest them), you are not going to get them. Those people might see it one time. They, however, are not the followers that have made you very wealthy over the years seeing the stage production over and over again. They don't care about the Phantom and they don't care who is casted in it. Anyone who has the slightest interest in the Phantom, who knows the book, your musical and who loves the music want Michael Crawford in the Movie. We are the people who are waiting for the movie. We are the people who will go see the movie two, ten and a hundred times over. We are the people who will buy the video, numerous copies(to give as gifts). Mr. Webber the true phans who have been with you through your entire career and have been there through the past 14 years of Phantoms run, those are the people you should be trying to reach and please with your movie, not "Joe Couch Potatoe" who doesn't know the difference between "Music of the Night" and "Saturday Night Fever". Please Mr. Webber listen to us, listen to the phans. Because right now the path you are taking makes no sense to anyone. You are in jeopardy of not only ruining one of your greatest musicals of your career, you are also in jeopardy of ruining your future career. As you well know the fans are a peculiar bunch, "make us happy and we will pretty much follow you any where. Cross us once and you will never see us again." If I can't speak for all the Phantom Phans on that one, I can definately speak for this phan. FYI I have been a fan of yours for 26 years. I was introduced to your work when I was ten and since then have introduced many friends and three children to your work. I hope that all doesn't end because of one lapse in judgement on your part. Thank you for listening Mr. Webber. I hope you take it to heart. We love your work, We love your Phantom. Please don't change anything about it and ask Michael Crawford (again) to play the Phantom. Sincerely Donna:)

Comments: Mr Webber: Phantom of the Opera is the first live musical I ever saw, and it is the show that started my slight obsession with musicals. I've seen it three times (2x in Los Angeles, once in San Francisco), I've played some of the songs in piano recitals, and I listen to the highlight album frequently. Not to mention the fact that I purchase pretty much every ALW highlight CD, and the first thing I look for is to see which tracks are from Phantom. The ONLY person that I will EVER be able to associate with the powerful role of the Phantom is Michael Crawford. He originated that role, he made the musical a success from that role, and he is still and always will be the greatest person to hold that role. Mr. Crawford has expressed his desire to reclaim the role for the film version of Phantom of the Opera, yet Antonio Banderas (who did an admirable job in Evita) is still rumored to be the front-runner? How can you insult the loyal Phantom fans, Michael Crawford fans, and even more, Andrew Lloyd Webber fans, by completely disregarding what the fans and Mr. Crawford himself would like to see? I can guarantee that if you do not listen to the fans, the movie will lose money. And I can guarantee on the other end that if Michael Crawford were to reprise the role of the Phantom, the movie would be a resounding success. Look at the numbers, and please listen to the fans. Thank you very much.

Comments: In regard to your recent statement to the Daily Telegraph that you have to rethink The Phantom of the Opera for the screen--rethink what? Everyone knows the basic story. Everyone who has seen the show knows the plot line and expects to see essentially the same thing on the screen. Everyone who owns the original cast recording expects to hear essentially the same music in the movie version. So what is there to "rethink?" The only thing that I personally (and countless others) want you to rethink is your choice of star for the movie. The person you are talking about now is unacceptable. The audience for this film wants the best Phantom there can possibly be, and since 1986 that has been Michael Crawford. In all the years since the show opened, no one has even come close to the acclaim he earned. Michael Crawford helped make POTO the most successful theatrical property in history. So why change anything? Keep the basic story, keep the music intact, and above all-KEEP MICHAEL CRAWFORD! In short, most Phantom fans desperately want you to film this show for them to see in theaters and to own for themselves for all time, but without Michael Crawford-what's the point? It will be just another melodrama starring a mediocre actor with a mediocre voice. Please, PLEASE, don't throw away the magic that made The Phantom of the Opera the treasure it has become!

Comments: Dear Mr.Lloyd Webber Please reconsider in your choice of Antonio Banderas and choose the real Phantom Michael Crawford in the Phantom of the Opera Movie.Michael Crawford is the only man whose abilities soar and this role truely belongs to him,he is the only man capable of capturing the Phantom's heart, soul and love for Christine. He made this role into what it is today and made the Phantom musical into a success. I was too young to watch Michael's performance in the role but I discovered a voice of such haunting quality,a voice which soars with passion and still thunders with anger, the voice which belongs to Michael Crawford. It is a unique voice which should be captured on film, for all generations to enjoy, for people like me who missed Michael's unforgetable performance and for the future generations to discover and cherish, even now younger individuals are discovering Phantom for the first time, and the voice that they hear will be Michael Crawford's. Please choose Michael Crawford for the Phantom Movie,a voice and performance such as his should not be lost. Sincerely, Ina Bullock

Comments: I'm quite sure that this letter will not be read, but in case it is... I believe you will find that you will make more money by casting the original Phantom in the role, Michael Crawford and NOT Antonio Banderas. Now, Mr Banderas may have been okay in "Evita", I've heard him try to sign POTO on PBS here in Ohio and was quite impressed with his inability to sing the part. Money make
